    Fun Fact: Half way through filming for the Oath Police Character, I was using a stereotypical nasally cop voice. Told Jakin to stop filming because I didn’t like the delivery of the lines and we should try it again but with a new voice. Landed on the one you are hearing now and after every line Jakin and I couldn’t stop laughing by how goofy it all felt. One of my favorite characters to play as of late!

      (The save typically depends on the circumstances)

    • @piemaniac9410
      @piemaniac9410 Месяц назад +72

      The thing is too, at least according to the PHB, a Paladin must intentionally or severely break their oath and make no attempt at atonement to lose their powers. Otherwise they just have to repent, which usually involves righting whatever wrong they caused or an act of self-denial, like holding an all-night vigil to pray for forgiveness to the gods instead of resting. (while a Paladin's powers don't come directly from any particular god, they are still Divine in nature and D&D assumes most, if not all, mortals at least pay lip service to one deity or another.)
      Mistakes and transgressions are OK, and to a degree even expected, since it's you can't really say they're dedicated to the oath if it never gets challenged and reaffirmed.

      Complaining that stopping vengeance breaks the vengeance paladin’s oath goes to show just how little you’ve played paladins, friend. Or have primarily played paladin with very accommodating DM’s. They are a character for those who actually like roleplaying. It doesn’t matter if the goblin had useful info or wasn’t directly responsible for what happened. That’s a matter of justice, or shrewdness, not vengeance. A vengeance paladin has faith that they will accomplish their goals in spite of, or because of, their pursuit of vengeance. You have to play like that, or allow other characters in your party handle dialogue. Which is something that actually makes sense. Your character isn’t going to be suited for every situation.

      Then the Oath loses a ton of value if you can just go “hmm, I can definitely afford to do this obviously bad thing that directly conflicts with my Oath because I haven’t done it too much”. I mean, the Oaths really don’t since you can just buy your Oath back with laughably easy to get gold, but this would only make that worse.

    My first BG3 character is an oath of devotion paladin. At first i tried very hard to play her as lawful good but at some point i started playing her almost like a rogue. i took out a big portion of the goblin camp by sneaking around, having gale cast sleep and then murdering the goblins in their sleep. i even snuck some of those goblins out of the camp in my inventory. my oath? totally fine.
    i helped out the two zhentarim in the cave with gnolls because i didn't realize they were slavers and freely walked around the zhentarim hideout for a while. then i decided i wanted their loot and just randomly started attacking them with astarion. my paladin literally entered the fight by yeeting one of the dudes she had helped of the cliff. my oath? totally fine!
    and then the one guard in the zhentarim hideout, who wasn't in the first fight, attacks my character, she kills him and suddenly her oath is broken. All i could think of was, it's about time but why now?! 😅😂 the oath system is silly.

    Honestly this was a big point of contention for me. My first character is a Paladin with Oath of the Ancients. And I did read all of the oath rules. And there were multiple times in the early game where I did something explicitly following the written rules of my oath which then broke the oath. I wasn't intending to save scum, but the game forced me to do so by breaking its own literally written down in-game rules.
