The one thing that I'll never understand is how the "industry" claimed that The Patriot was such a horrible movie that people were paid to go watch it in the theater and were then paid to give it a favorable review. This movie stands on its own merit and is an excellent film.

As well as Dan Morgan, who was from Virginia and led Morgan's riflemen which became an elite group of marksman.

The part where his sons look on stunned by what their father has turned into really beautifully illustrates the reality of war. Now they understand why their father was against war. Why he didn’t want him and his family to be a part of it. It wasn’t because of cowardice, it’s because he knew what it does to people, especially him. They don’t see their father anymore, they see a monster.

It’s one thing to kill the enemy from a distance using guns and cannons. Now his sons realize what it looks to have to do it up close and personal. Something he didn’t want them experiencing because it will awaken the killer inside you when not just fighting to win a battle but to survive and avenge. A darkness he didn’t want them to bear like he does.

Most of these people don't have the same knowledge I do on firearms and firearms history. So let me teach everyone a couple of things. Back when this took place (The American Revolutionary War, ARW for short) the vast majority of weapons used in war were smoothbore muskets. There were several issues with this as they 1 - used round lead balls that were smaller in diameter than the inside of the barrel of the gun. This meant that 2 - the ball would bounce around inside it until it exited and had little to no control over where it went once it did so. That's why 3 - wars were fought with massed formations so that through sheer volume of fire some of the bullets would hit some of the enemy soldiers. Earlier in this film these children were shown to have gone out hunting and brought back squirrels and rabbits. Both of these animals are fast and rather small targets to hit. They were very likely using Kentucky Rifles rather than smooth bore muskets of the era. Two reasons why this can be deduced as so. 1 - Rifling (for those who don't know) is the practice of cutting or otherwise forming raised ridges inside a gun's barrel. The rifling, when combined with a shot that is roughly the same size, if not slightly larger than the diameter of the inside of the gun's barrel, causes the bullet to spin as it exits the gun. This spin causes the bullet to fly straighter, farther, and more accurately than a bullet fired from a smoothbore musket does. Rifling didn't become common on military issued weapons until just before the ACW (American Civil War). And 2 - They didn't miss. Smoothbore muskets even at that short range could still miss when shot at a single target rather than massed formations of soldiers.
TLDR: Kids had more practice shooting small things with guns that were more accurate than the ones used by the British Soldiers in this scene.
EDIT: Hollywood has a bad record in accurately showing firearms usage. Especially historical firearms such as muskets. John Wick is a glaring example of ACCURATE firearms usage.

Most hunters that could afford it had rifled muskets for the increased accuracy. Especially when you have to make sure your shot counts and can bring home food. Armies where mass produced so most had smooth bore for large volley fire lines and only marksmen who where mostly recruited from the hunters where given rifled muskets for their accuracy.
So I could see a former soldier who owns a large plantation having a few rifled muskets for hunting.

They just weren't trained in dealing with these guerilla/ambush tactics. Now, the stupidity of "you're loosing to a bunch of kids" etc. Now, I don't expect much from these types reaction channels which has demonstrated time and time again that they can't think two inches outside the box.

Why the British soldiers are not very accurate compared to the "children" is this. British soldiers are trained to fire in giant rows at large formations not individuals the children are trained to shot for hunting for food so to be more accurate. Also, the British muskets were smooth bore and far less accurate than the guns that Mel and Kids are firing that have riffled barrels making them far more accurate.
