Make sure you try the new 8.2 update released yesterday - lots of improvements to the sound. I use it with external reverbs (well, in a DAW), EQ and saturation. I tend to prefer the Blüthner model.

It has the best playing experience/feel/touch/etc, hands down,
but it has a few seemingly little probpems wigh its sound, one of these little weird things about its sound is its attack part of the sound, it reminds me of e-kick drum pitch pluck-style envelope sound, and I tried for the longest time and I can't unhear it, and it really bothers my ears, it makes it sound fake piano sound to my ears, and my ears are not even that sensitive to timbre. This is just how I hear/perceive it, but I read si.ilar things on forums and RUclips comment sections. I hope they can improve the attack part of the sound in Pianoteq 9. Pianoteq 8's attack part of the sound sounds considerably more realistic compared to Pianoteq 7's attack part of the sound, but it still fake sounding (to my ears at least).
Interestingly the Roland modelling (I think they call it "SuperNATURAL" (?)) attack part sounds less synthetic compared to Pianoteq 8's attack.

Pianoteq has been the sound of the piano I use for practice since around 2011. I upgraded from Stage to Standard 7 a while back. I could be content with Stage in hindsight, but I'm happy for Mod to have the money for Standard. I have e.g. Komplete which has a number of sample-based pianos which are nothing compared to Pianoteq.

Well done Sam, very good playing. I see you learned a lot on how to set up pianoteq that out of box sounds so perfectly unreal. If I may suggest, you can also play with the unison width (0.90 with random enabled) that also increases a bit the realism, and exclude the limiter that sounds a bit artificial. A final touch you can try is customizing the reverb, there is the possibility to use custom IR, this also help with the realism. Many thanks for this video indeed.

I own Pianoteq 8 Pro and nothing I've tried beats it for authentic playability. Also, the sound has come on a long way during the past few version. However, I still don't feel it is quite there in regards to overall sound. However, if it keeps on improving as much as the past few major releases, it will eventually replace all my sample libraries! I own around 12+ piano sample libraries and my goto is Noire. This gets me most of my work done but it doesn't sound as alive as a piano sampled in a decent room/hall with multiple mic perspectives. As a result I'm looking to upgrade it and am considering the Garritan CFX or Ivory 3.

In comparing the two VSTs of Pianoteq and Keyscaoe, I have noticed Pianoteq sounds better through speakers than Keyscape. Yet Keyscape sounds better through headphones than Pianoteq. It is a strange anomaly.... I think with speakers Pianoteq can breathe with the room as it is completely raw where as Keyscape is quite heavily processed. Plus through speakers Pianoteq you can just dig in and that bass resonance is heavenly, you can easily be deceived into believing it is real. I think the stereo width is better in Pianoteq but you have more options so it is a bit of unfair comparison.
The only weakness of Pianoteq is sometimes it can feel a bit too spongy and soft compared to Keyscape especially when digging in and the mid range is still off slightly.
Both are amazing instruments and lead the way in my opinion in there retrospective fields.

Yes, this is my take as well, even though I have yet to try keyscape. I find pianoteq rather dull in headphones. But with good speakers... yeah, sound so alive and realistic. I imagine pianoteq is really good live for this reason.

I’ve used and loved PT for several years now. Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but you can freeze settings like the condition slider and your preset velocity curve globally so that you don’t have to adjust them every time you change a preset. I believe it’s under that snowflake icon near the top of the GUI. Thanks for your inspirational playing!

I have a hard time finding any sound really beautiful on pianoteq, I love the Kawai sampled sounds on ca99... I love every single one. But I have a roland fp90x, very basic sounds just acceptable, kind of bad, however pianoteq just needs an iphone so its cool and handy, I like the felt pianos and some of the vintage eps, but pianowise I'm still searching, I really like the sampled sounds of kawai ca series and yamaha cp88..

It sounds really nice and it's a great software. Based on the facts that I'm a beginner, I don't really need it and that after trying the demo I realized I'd probably chase more after buying more instrument packs, choosing the right instrument and tinkering, than playing, I realized it's not probably the right choice for me. I'm thinking about the UVI Austrian Grand, as it's cheaper than all Pianoteq versions and I love the Bosendorfer sound - it's also what I have on my main digital piano, albeit in lower quality.

    • @SamTheBeardGuy

I get that, if you're a beginner beginner, pianoteq might be overkill. UVI Austrian is great, I did a video on it if you haven't checked it out yet.

I wish they had a better EP sound. The Hohners really suck.
but its my goto turn on the computer and have it in the bkd prog
because it saves every single thing you play in an archive folder
so if you blast something out, a few days later you can retrieve it easily
I really wish they would get their crap together for a good rhodes sim
then it would be so essential
great real piano sounds, lots of variations
very small size and ram footprint
records every note you ever play on it
runs on windows tablets just fine.

I really like what I'm hearing and have now tried the trial version today. I use a Kawai VPC-1 88-key midi piano controller with both the Synthogy Ivory II American Concert D, and the VI Labs True Keys. While searching this morning for a stand alone midi sound module for my VPC-1 because I'm tired of firing up the computer every time I want play piano, I then learned about this Pianoteq 8 software. I downloaded the trial Standard version and began messing around and was highly impressed. I have a yacht load of money tied up in the five piano sample sets I've been using for 7 years, only to see that Pianoteq offers a cruise ship load of pianos for a fraction of my current investment. This of course means I still have to use a computer with this gawd awful monitor sitting on my piano case which I was trying to get rid of. While I should've gotten a Kawai MP11 with built-in sound engine, I chose the VPC-1 controller because of it's RM3 grand piano action with woodcore keysticks and textured synthetic keytops. Guess I might add Pianoteq 8 to my list of software, keep the computer but upgrade standard monitor to a touch monitor for easier access and control. By the way I love your piano playing and could listen to that all day with a breaks on Mon-Wed-Fri to avoid overload.

I go hot and cold with Pianoteq especially since I own UVI Ravenscroft 275. Maybe I need to upgrade and try again. I think I get disapointed by a lot of vst's when I want to use them in a live situation, I find they can sound thin and lack body. They always sound great in headphones though🤣. But if i compare my Kawai ES920 against these VST's the Kawai wins hands down thorugh my pa (even though I know it shouldn't). It's just that the Kawai is meant for live use and vst's are happiest in your headphones. Maybe I just don't have the eq right in my live setup for my VST's (coming out of my Focusrite of course). I must admit to preferring not to mess with eq too much, else can make it even worse.

    • @SamTheBeardGuy
      @SamTheBeardGuy  9 месяцев назад +1

Yeah it just depends on the environment. For a lot of live stuff you're probably going to need to do some treatment. I love PianoTeq in the studio, not using it a ton live
