  • This is a last comparison between Palora and Columbiana yellow. Palora wins on shorter fruit maturation time; higher Brix reading and easier to grow.

Thanks for sharing your experiences between the 2 yellows! Palora seems to be the clear winner in every way, I'm excited for mine to mature!

Thanks for sharing your comparison! I spoke to another grower from Northern California and was very surprised to hear that Palora was the hardiest variety they had. They said it didn't show any sort of damage from the heat or from the cold and wet conditions in the winter, even when compared to undatus and red flesh varieties. I had always thought that Palora was more sensitive to cold weather than other varieties, but now I'm starting to wonder if that's accurate?

Thank you for the comment. I think they are right. From my experience, Palora is more hardy than Columbiana yellow for sure. The undatus and the red flesh varieties are pretty hardy too, but I did not have comparison which are more hardier. I will try to grow a Palora cutting on the ground and leave it outside of my greenhouse during winter time to see if it will survive. That will be one of the things to do next year.

Thanks for sharing. Is the Colombian variety self-fertile? If it isn't, what pollen does it cross paths with? Thank you.

Sorry I did not see your question earlier.Yes, Colombian yellow is self-fertile.

I just planted a yellow dragon on the trellis & it was so tender it broke in half... luckily I had another one

Plant the broken part, then you will have two plants. Dragon fruits are tough.

Thank you for watching my video. I like sweet dragon fruits also, but I found most of the varieties I have (I have over 20 varieties), they are either not very sweet most of the time or sweet but the fruit size is small. Kathie Van Arum is the one I found the sweetest consistently and have floral fragrance in the flesh. I like Sugar Dragon's flavor but the size is small. Bigger fruit and sweet would be American Beauty but it is not very productive in my hand. That is one of the reasons I started to experimenting on creating hybrids between Kathie (sweet but the fruit size is on the small side) and Tricia (large fruit with red flesh) and I think I got the one I am looking for, but so far I only have one fruit. I am waiting to see if all its fruits are sweet and big. (ruclips.net/video/hH_bTqh6Q5o/видео.html)

    What the best dragon fruit?

It depends on what you like. If you like sweetness, Kathie Van Arum is the one consistently producing fruits with brix higher than 20 with lichy like smell; If you like balanced sweet/sour tastes, Physical graffiti will be your pick. American beauty taste very good but its production is in the lower side.Sugar dragon tastes very good too and very productive but its fruit size is a little small.

Your yellows are the species Selenicereus Megalanthus from Columbia (there bouts), and your Palora is another S. megalanthus from Equador … you need to mention where you live… a lot of people in the USA assume that that these two S. megalanthus will grow the same as they do north of the Ecuador …
The Tricia is what it is … I believe Edgar Valdivia named it after one of his daughters…
Your Asunta 4 isn’t worth all of the hype growing it … the flower doesn’t want to open… the fruit has a low brix rating and can become mushy … I don’t think Edgar used either Connie Mayer or Bruni to develope his Asunta DF line, but I think he used KVA Kathy Van Arun another of the sisters to the above you mentioned … KVA … enough … I’d go on this RUclips site and view some of Kim Phan’s videos…
Search … Kim Phan Dragon Fruit … lots of great info …
