When wearing the R.A.F. Version I always found that being ordered to open the hanger doors via the winding handle was guaranteed to rip the buttonholes in the blouse clean off the buttons on the trousers that held the battle dress together!
Agreed, not an ideal design from that point of view, particularly with the brass buttons which have a knack for sawing through the thread and popping off rather than popping out of the button holes.
@@RiflemanMoore hey I'm looking to get myself a battledress from whoever took over panther stores production you take a size 10 right my chest is a 37 but my waist is 29 would you recommend a size 10 for me I'm 5 ft 9
were there any british/commonwealth summer/tropical uniform trousers that had a similar cut as the battledress trousers with the large pocket on the left leg? i've seen pictures of north africa/sicily/italy but none show summer trousers with big pockets...
Thank you for this video. Now I know of the 1930s British Pattern of uniform. Also searching on Ebay for this stuff, I found a book that details uniforms from 1937 to 1961 I perhaps ought to read. I found a p49 battle blouse for 36 US dollars appoximentely. Cannot buy it now however. But I'll look around now for the p37 pattern.
Most welcome! Keep an eye out indeed, original Battledress, Serge is becoming harder and harder to find at a decent price. Which book are you referring to?
Pattern 37 battle dress was a British combat jacket used by the Canadians Australians New Zealanders and other British commonwealth countries that also joined the allies on America and Britain’s side against the axis powers Germany Italy and japan during world war 2 from 1939 to 1945
With the unfortunate closure of Panther, the best reproductions available are WPG or SoF. WPG also make the best RAF BD (WSD). The latest SoF ones look as if they have dandruff!
Very good video ! It's a shame its so expensive though. Sorry to be a nuisance again but did you get issued 2 sets of BD, one for combat and one for parade ? Many thanks
I have BDs from Khaki on campaign, Pegasus and Panther and I have to say that the Panther BDs are by far superior. KOC tends to be a bit iffy around the edge and have a rushed feel about them. Pegasus serge is TOO wooly and the sizings a bit off but my Panther BDs of which I have a patterns is rather nice and having been nicely worn in is difficult to tell from originals.
Hey I recently got the ww2 Japanese 39pattern I believe it’s called from soldier of fortune it’s very well made o highly recommend it I’ll do a video when I can about it
+CosmoWW1 Renactor I know Khaki on Campaign's new serge is very good, not seen a recent Pegasus example, with Panther you do get the original sizing options, not sure if that's the case with Pegasus and Khaki on Campaign.
Well with Khaki on Campaign I've ordered a "Utility Service Dress Serge Austerity 1914" or more commonly called the simplified SD tunic from them and although it's made by hand I have requested for mine to be in the correct period sizing
I was just on the site and it seems to be already in effect. Are there any worthy alternatives or are we going to have to resort to subpar repros from the likes of Soldier of Fortune; or hope to god to find an original piece that fits? Only asking because 1: I live in rural northern Alberta (Canada), so militaria shows aren't really a thing and 2: I'm quite tall and lanky so nothing really fits me well; and the panther store was particularly nice as they did custom sizing.
That's a real shame. Though in a stroke of luck, since then I was able to find a 1942 dated Canadian blouse in a size that should fit well enough. Unfortunately it has had the lapels tailored for wearing open at the third button and so will need to be modified back to it's original state.
+Das Reich Soldaten I didn't have a problem, mine was made to an issue size, forget how long, perhaps a month from ordering. At that time I think all uniforms were made to order, not sure if that's still the case. I would expect it to take a bit longer if ordering a custom tailored size.
The battle jacket looks awesome! The Americans during WWII especially stationed in the ETO used a modified version of the British battle jacket as the "Ike Jacket". They looked sharp and was standard issue for US soldiers as a dress uniform jacket during the Korean War era up until the late 1950s. My Dad looked sharp wearing this jacket when I saw an old photo of him in Japan when he came back from combat from Korea in 1954. Dad looked bad ass with his brown paratrooper boots, parachute glider patch on his garrison cap, his Combat Infantry Badge, Jump Wings, and combat "Fruit Salad" on his jacket. He told me it was the golden days to be a soldier after Korea in Japan. Paratroopers of the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team really stood out. Other American soldiers would love to fight the Paratroopers in bar fights or on the streets. Dad and his buddies had a great time kicking the shit out of "Leg Infantry" when outnumbered. The US Military MPs were reluctant to step in and stop a fight in a bar or out in the streets of Japan between regular American soldiers and Paratroopers. They let the Paratroopers finish their fights when there is more than a platoon of them or company size. He told me that the "Ike Jacket" or British Battledress Jacket gave them better punching and swing power because of their sleeves during bar and street combat and gave the "Leg Infantry" a good ass beating. They really looked sharp for the ladies back in the US while on leave and strutting down Main Street USA. My Dad thank the British Army for this piece of uniform that American soldiers loved wearing. The US Army fucked it up in the 1960s.
I know it sounds daft but so they can be unbuttoned, it makes it easier to attach and detach a belt, especially one which, like the 1937 Pattern, has buckles on the back.
We'll with 36 shades of serge being used could work, I have added correct stitching above the pockets and added the brass and denim BD type buttons, with another hook and eye. It looks exactly the same as an original from a friends collection other then the shade being slightly darker
CosmoWW1 Renactor It's noted for generally being a darker green shade. Some early manufactured Greek BD seems to be closer to the British shades but most is a darker almost olive green colour. I'd still advise a high quality repro over Greek BD.
Rifleman Moore to be honest the later tunics could be of different shades and sewing variations would be plenty as many made in cottage industries - just miffed that Panther now closed so never got to order a set. Back to UK suppliers
@@RiflemanMoore Just checked the WPG CE website, the quality seems identical to Panther Store and the battledress is now available for sale but unfortunately shipping to the UK is currently suspended. There is a full page explanation as to why this is but, in a nutshell, they're saying that they can't ship to the UK yet for UK VAT collection reasons and that they've been told by their UK tax agent that it will be 14 weeks from 20th February 2021 before their import license is granted..

Currently investigating alternatives actually. It might be the topic of a video later in the year.
@@RiflemanMoore That would be great. I cannot find a review, have you reviewed WW11original and repro RAF BD's?
Very good video ! It's a shame its so expensive though. Sorry to be a nuisance again but did you get issued 2 sets of BD, one for combat and one for parade ? Many thanks
Yes, two suits, to be honest Panther isn't that expensive if you look at the cost of SoF and WPG's offerings.
my battledress from Panther store took 2 months to get here but it was well worth the wait considering it was tailored to my size
+WWIIUK It's definitely worth the wait in my opinion too.
Do they not make Battle Dress anymore? I believe they changed websites and I can't find any Battle Dress on it.
Yes, unfortunately production has stopped.
@@RiflemanMoore That's to bad, do you know of any other places that sell good quality battle dress?

I would say pegasus militaria or khaki on campaign are debatably better then Panther store, however they're all fairly similar when you compare them
+CosmoWW1 Renactor I know Khaki on Campaign's new serge is very good, not seen a recent Pegasus example, with Panther you do get the original sizing options, not sure if that's the case with Pegasus and Khaki on Campaign.

thank you for this video! Was there anything worn underneath this tunic? Like a shirt or something?
Djgitkavkaza they wore a service shirt under the tunic
thank you)
They wore a wool flannel khaki collarless shirt.
Wpg central europe started to sell Battledress utility pattern, they claim that their BD is pantherstore heritage, what do you think about it?
I can't comment I fear as I haven't seen any in person yet but I do understand WPG have taken over production.
to bad they are going to discontinue their allied uniforms
Indeed so.
What is their reasoning?

Rifleman Moore for my part that was accessories not uniforms so it will be 2 weeks I think (:
Could you do a video on how to fold the anti gas cape?
Sorry I missed this comment, it's something I can certainly do in the future.

Do they do a Canadian style battledress.
Unfortunately not but many Canadian troops in Europe were issued British battledress.
Do they do the RAF Battle dress?
I think they might do War Service Dress, I'd advise checking their website.
Do they have to tuck in
If they tuck in then how also how do they button the dress
They don't tuck in, the blouse buttons onto the trousers.
@@RiflemanMoore alright then thanks

where did you get the grenadier guards gilt pip star?
+gareth veal They came off an original Grenadier Guards service dress in my collection.
www.kellybadges.co.uk try this company for the bronze one.
What are the buttons for on thr belt loops?
I know it sounds daft but so they can be unbuttoned, it makes it easier to attach and detach a belt, especially one which, like the 1937 Pattern, has buckles on the back.
Also would it be possible to convert a Greek BD that's already extremely similar to the BD serge already?
+CosmoWW1 Renactor Greek BD tends to be rougher manufacture and a very green colour, I'd generally suggest a high quality repro over Greek personally.
We'll with 36 shades of serge being used could work, I have added correct stitching above the pockets and added the brass and denim BD type buttons, with another hook and eye. It looks exactly the same as an original from a friends collection other then the shade being slightly darker

Well should be ordering a Panther 40 Austerity Set eventually but mines a 46 dated Greek BD which means it's the right colour etc.
+CosmoWW1 Renactor The buttons on the Panther utility/austerity BD are a little off and worth changing if you can get some originals, just a heads up.
You could always tell a Panther blouse because the seam in the rear is reversed from original - check it out
Not something I thought to mention as I believe I've seen seams sewn both ways on originals but I will double check that.
