Saw a post try to say that this song was about how nothing good comes from weapons and that it was anti gun, and it's so clearly about the absurdity of war in the sense that the cowards and the ones safe from the dangers of war are the ones who can declare it while others pay the price. How can people become so deluded?
It's a song about class war IMO. The powerful and the monied are only happy to have other people manufacture instruments of death and destruction- and put them in the hands of other working class folk so that they can kill each-other- so long as the shot callers on both sides get to sit far away from the horror of war and death, and collect cheques from the outcome. I come from a family with a long history in the armed forces, I almost signed up myself- but I realised that I could never be a solider. I could never shoot a man who likely has more in common with me than anyone telling me to kill him, or him to kill me- all because someone far away from the reality of it all, someone richer, more powerful, with no concept of what it means to live a real life told me to because it served their ends. Being "anti-gun" is a complicated position. Liberals will disarm you while militarising the state- they will beg that you ~trust the system!!!~ trust the ~correct process~- even as that machine grinds you to dust. Conservatives will gleefully hand you all the armaments you could ever want- so long as you can afford them. All the while slyly nudging you to point them at your neighbours, shoot at these powerless *others*, the blacks! the transgenders! the woke! the Jews! kill these people who have done nothing to you, but they sure are a little strange right?- you hate them! don't you? look at these cherry picked examples of teenagers being morons! you hate them right? not us!. I would be "Anti-gun" in a perfect world. There should be no reason to create an instrument designed purely to end the life of your fellow human being. I find guns disgusting on that level. But I'd take one up to defend my neighbour, I'd pick one up to stand up for people being forced down into the mud. Not for a country, or a business, but for the people. We don't live in a perfect world. These monsters have profited from the blood of so many- we have torn at each other for thousands of years, over minor differences that don't fucking matter!, while they grew fat on our suffering, maybe it's time for us to turn their own instruments against them for a change.
