- Johnny Cash and Johnny Rodriguez sing a Woody Guthrie classic, "Deportee." Today in the United States the song is still just as relevant as it was when this duet was performed in 1987 on Nashville Now.
It's 2021 and this song is current for today,I hope Johnny Rodriguez is a member of the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame,He's so much more talented than so many in this music world of auto-tune,!!!!! This is a great talent.....!!!! Both he and Johnny Cash
I was blessed to see him in concert about 4 years ago. Such a powerful performer; gorgeous voice still.
I see three thumbs down. I guess there are a few folks upset to see Johnny Cash show compassion toward aliens. Nowadays, its hard to find someone on television show the courage of Johnnny Cash.
People should immigrate yes, but legally.
+CashPresley32 You do know the song is about migrant workers, don't you? Not immigration.
Also, "should" doesn't always factor into situations where people are trying to save the lives of their families. Even really, really white people don't watch their kids starve to death while they wait for the right paperwork.
guypaul And I am not really, really white. I am 3/4 white and 1/4 Native American.
Why do you think they were deported? They were temporary workers deported when their contracts ran out. Most of them probably would have preferred to stay in the U.S, but immigration law did not allow them to stay and look for other jobs. A number of proposals to "improve" current immigration laws involve bringing back a similar "bracero" law.
That was when people would come here to work and make some money to take back home .
And they weren't demanding anything like the so called dreamers

Awesome version of a classic song. Johnny R. Is amazing.
Both are.
Still relevant
More than ever !!!
when I first heard this song it was done by the Highway Men. It caught my attention because I am Native Armericn and this place was stolen by people who came from other lands, but it is not mentioned in American history how the lands were shared with those new people. what conflicts broke out was because of the disrespect shown to the indigenous people and to the Creation that gave us life. Then this song is heard and it left me wondering why this country had to be so selfish. I think that is something that should be realized and understood by all of us. daneh ho neyo' de:ong neh sa'nigo:in
Not true actually
its done by woody guthrie
@@RJ1999x that is true. Only someone ignorant to basic history and the truth would say otherwise. You don’t have to take the blame for our ancestors actions but we have to at least admit and accept it happened and not repeat their intolerance towards others.

I lose part of my heart when Johnny died. R.I.P Johnny & June. See U when is my time. Go over the river.
This is a beautiful and heartfelt song about the plane crash.
This song hits me
I've been listening to one version or another for 40 years running, and it's as wrenching as ever. Beautiful version here -- Johnny Rodriguez matches Johnny Cash note for note, word for word.
What is the name of his song? I don't think of it as a matter of winners.
+Paul Goode The name of the song is Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)
Cash shoulda shut up and let Rodriguez sing it alone. No, wonderful song. Like the version the Highwaymen did with Rodriguez as well. At the start and the end of the day were all still just a number of a "Deportee" to the Man because we're all replaceable, can never forget that
.
What a brilliant version of a beautiful song with the marvellous Johnny Cash , what a gentleman, both are in fact, thank you x
Wonderful. Moving. Sad. Inspiring.
john cash was a true trailblazer. this song must have stirred the Nazis of Nashville back in 1987.
Worth a close listen.
wonderful song by 2 wonderful performers. love them both
Johnny Cash you will not forget for anyone ❤️🙏
Remember when politics could be discussed in a more civil manner between friends? Ahh, I miss those days.
Love how Johnny R sings in Spanish
Oh this is so beautiful makes me want to cry.Love the music&singers.Mary Fizer
I grew up in Coalinga and all through school we were never told about that crash.

A beautiful song, performed for one of the best country music singers!!!
It's only sad if one allows hatred, fear, race, and other derogatory comments influence your thoughts. Choose love not fear. We were all born with unconditional love.
I have loved JR since his first hit, and still love him in 2021!
I love Jr more than you
Man. Rodriguez had such a great voice. So underrated. Talented as all hell. I wish he’d recorded 100 more albums.
Amazing! I get chills at the end of this performance.
Johnny Cash was great. He risked offending his fans. He had Bob Dylan on his show.
this song is so amazing

"Deportee" always hits me in the feels, but this version had me weeping. It is sung with such tenderness by these men, who took the trouble to honor its bilingual nature. Does anyone know what program this was presented on, who introduced the song, and when it was aired? My guess is the late 60s/early 70s. I'd never heard of Johnny Rodriguez before, but he did a damned fine job here.
I live in San Jose, and whenever I'm up on Hwy 17 pass to Santa Cruz, I always take a look back at Los Gatos, which we gringos tragically pronounce as "Las GAT-us." I don't know the exact location of the crash, but the telephone wires across the arroyo have those orange balloon-like plane warnings hanging from them. Where they installed as a precaution? I don't know, but I thought I'd share these details with my like-minded friends.
Brilliant.
Greatest song for me
Great thanks
fantastic
Thank you Johnnys
Awesome song ............still niCe 4 4 19............
I'll try again A strong community knows it's neighbors . A strong nation knows it's neighbors.if we are going to keep. Strong we need the strength of all our good neighbors and we have no need to chase around the world looking for them. Just look next door.We as a people can no longer use our good neighbors then dishonor them by discarding them or calling them not by their names but just DEPORTEES.
Wet backs drug dealers fuckem daca bastards
BRAVO!!!
There is more than one way look at at everything.
Thank you.
Rodriguez has the craziest guitar strumming lol!!
I just saw that 😂
2 great C/W artists -this song always resonates with us irish- if you get a chance listen to Luke Kelly from the Dubliners put his interpretation on it
Best ever

This live recording is far superior to the album version with Willie Nelson. The blend of these two very different voices, the vision of how the song obviously touches both men and being able to hear Rodriguez's narration at the end are all great.
So happy to see Johnny Cash honor this excellent song, but confused as to he changed the lyrics.
We don't say "aliens" anymore. Back in the 1980's it was normal. I know Johny meant well,
This was a time when a good old boy from the south had the balls to stand up for immigrants. His name was Johnny Cash. Nowadays he would be called someone who should be deported by MAGA's.

Our neighbors a strong community knows and appr3
Knows and appreciates its neighbors. It doesn't use them and not their names, A strong neighborhood A strong nation does not dishonor its neighbors or call them DEPORTEES
What year is this?
1987. Woody wrote it in 1948 which, sadly, makes even more relevant now.
Rodriguez guitar does not sound as being amplified, but who cares, anyway, this is a great song
Johnny's voice changed
Sad song

Johnny cash by far the better singer!!!
I agree.

Who said it had to be a competition? LMFAO. Johnny Cash is a legend. Nothing wrong with Second place for Johnny R. Here. He's amazing as well. Don't see why you felt the need to compare them.
I love the old brothers four cover of Deportee.

One of the Nashville cats who played on Ralph's show--he always had stellar players.

Here's a song a song for today.
It's title: THEY CAME HERE FOR A BETTER LIFE, SO MY GOVERNMENT GAVE THEM MINE.
Can't believe all the smug self righteous virtue signalers here.
The song is about migrant workers NOT illegals. But can't ruin the narrative, can we?
"Some of us are illegal, and others not wanted"
Hey bud, no one is stopping you from working the fields.
I agree I believe in compassion but so many here wanna ring the bell but very few lift a finger to welcome them in their home rather they want the government to fund, feed, cloth em all sorry but we have homeless veterans and our own we must help, I don't mind migrants just do it the right way.
