I heard a theory that the writer came up with 42 because it was his favorite alcohol (I don't l ow if it was scotch or whiskey or whatever, so I'm just being generic and saying alcohol sorry). I was told in school that he had writer's block on what the answer would be and he saw a schoolbus with the number 42 on it drive by and he just went with it. Idk if either of these are true (especially since I doubt a public school would be honest about a mature or controvertial aspect of something they're teaching), but I just think the meta behind writing can be interesting.
