Thank you, Tom, for great review!!!! Let me add more information for the raised actual and valuable points of dislike in your review: About cables: We are switching to thinner cables in April-May with our own gun design - you would not be disappointed :) We will keep existing cables for commercial units only going from April 2023. Departure charging is not actually a software glitch, it is sort of a problem with dual units. But there is a fix. If your car set up for departure charging based on 40 amps charging profile, ti will fail, as Duo would not be able to deliver 40 amps on demand, if another vehicle is plugged in (remember we keep 8 amps for second vehicle for finishing charging (we do not know when charging actually finished, car still can draw power to finish up 100% charge), also what if another car is actively charging on the line? So here is a work around for Departure charging: keep your profile for 20 amps charging and it will work! Set up on your tesla that this plug only can draw 20 amps, then Departure charging will work fine. some cars you cannot set up charging profile like Ford - unfortunately for some cars departure charging will not work when 2 vehicles plugged into the charger at the same time. if only one vehicle is plugged, it will work. We will try to work with Demand profiles in the new release of Duo. More interesting products coming up: Mini finally production starts end of January (damn supply chain), Alpha will be released at the same timeframe with full UL, Grizzl-E Ultimate is undergoing testing right now, we are really excited about Ultimate. Sorry we would not provide any technical specs for Ultimate at this point, until it is ready for production.
Glad to see you providing a new cable! Still waiting to see if you come out with a Tesla style mobile connector with a handful of plug types. I think you could build a really solid weatherproof unit that no one else really has. Ford has a removeable plug system, but doesn't offer anything other than a 14-50 and 5-15. Sorta useless... Right now the best option is to buy the Tesla unit and a TeslaTap adapter for J1772 use.
Our household is really happy with our Duo - we didn't have load capacity to support two 50 amp outlets in our garage and sharing one charger was a non-starter. So this was a great solution to our problem. Thank you for producing such a versatile, durable, simple, and high value charger. Smart features be damned. 😀
About cables: If you are leaving the current cables for commercial grade, does this mean that what people want are cables that are lower grade and will break sooner than the current cable?
Been using this unit for over 6 months charging both my Tesla Model 3 and Rivian R1T. Had a problem with the original unit sometimes shutting down when both EVs were charging. Called United Chargers who asked a lot of questions about the problem, but they also seemed aware of the issue. They sent a new unit before I even returned the old one and the new one's been working great. I agree with your comment on the seemingly cheap connector and was pleasantly surprised when it did not shatter in your drop test. Keep up the great work Tom!
I have 2 Grizzl-E chargers, not the duo, in separate locations. The cable is REAL stiff at first but over the last 3 or 4 months have become much more supple and easy to manipulate. I’m very happy with their robustness. I don’t worry about them being run over or damaged by kids or pets. Both of my locations are outdoor which is why I chose these chargers in the first place. Personally I wouldn’t let the cable critique be a worry if you need a workhorse EVSE. My 2 cents.
I have this and it fits my needs perfectly. Lightning and Rav4 Prime plugged in every night and only need to run one feed for a Nema 14-50. Will admit the cables are thick and bulky.
Thanks Tom, if the user has two ev's and the garage or parking area is unheated it is best to plug both in every night in winter so that the battery conditioning can hold the batteries at cold weather operating temps to keep the range and performance in cold weather optimally. I know I have two EV's A 2020 Soul EV and a newly acquired Ioniq 5 and cold weather is headed our way, I only have one Juicebox so our daily commuter will be plugged in on that one and my Ioniq 5 I'll have on the Level 1 to keep the battery in winter mode as I only use that car occasionally when my wife has teh Soul EV out on the road, but with this charger, it is a no brainier, just keep them both plugged in so it is a great addition for anyone in Canada or in the Northern States.
Omg, thank you! The scheduled departure breaks on my Ioniq 5 with the Grizzl-E Smart! Two nights in a row it just never started charging. I had to switch to the scheduling on the EVSE instead. So glad to hear they are working on it.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney will do. The ChargeLab app also says I charged 5x the kWh I’m actually pulling. Do you think that’s the app or the Evse?
I bought the classic in early 2021 because it's a very simple and robust unit. Would be nice to have a kwh meter on it, but Tesla has all other functions so a smart charger wasn't truly needed. I keep it in the garage which is heated to 40F so the cable stays nice and flexible, even if it is a little heavy. Would be nice if they had a home version with a thinner more flexible cable like the chargepoint. I think the thick cable would be great for commercial use though, as you said. Edit: I see U.C. commented they are making units with a thinner cable next year, awesome! I don't mind the connector on my unit, the 5 seconds I'm grabbing it just isn't a problem to me, I have dropped mine a couple times on concrete by accident and no issues yet. I think it's stronger than it looks/feels. The metal button and latch operate really nicely to me as well. I'd much rather have that over plastic latches.

0:41 - "that way more people can bask in my awesomeness..." GUILTY AS CHARGED "Tommy Molo" that is indeed why I'm here. thanks for the review this just so happens to be the kind of unit I was looking for. original plan was to buy 2 individual Grizzle units.
I located my car circuit at the garage door unlike your set up. The thought was I could charge a vehicle in the garage and with 24 foot length of cord, I could charge a car in the driveway as well. This would be a great solution For that, but with such a thick cable under a garage door, that I prefer to remain almost all the way down makes it a non-starter. Great review. Hope to see some improvements on this product to make it even better.
Nice review of the Duo!! I believe the Grizzl E EVSEs are pretty good and Tom's comments about their limitations are fair but not deal breakers. I have a 2 year old Grizzl E smart EVSE and it has been reliable, however, this last summer here in mid-Missouri I began to notice that the input cable and NEMA 14-50 plug started getting pretty hot (130-140 F) an hour into a charge at 32 amps. The input cable includes the plug and short length of cable inserting into the charger box. I generally charge my 2020 Bolt off peak between 2 and 6 am when power is cheap ($0.05/kW). In response to the high temp issue I replaced my cheap NEMA 14-50 plug with a heavy duty Hubble outlet, I dialed the amps down to 24 A and I only charged for 2 hours at most. The plug temp still got warm despite the outlet upgrade and charge session limitations. This is a bit of a hassle so I decided to contact Tech Support at United Chargers. They mentioned that the plug shouldn't get much above 120 F during charging. After many weeks of exchanging emails with tech support they suggested that there may be an issue with the input cable and they sent me a replacement. I am not a DIY type but even I was able to replace the old plug and cable with the new one. The plug and input cable didn't heat up above 70 F during the last three charging sessions which seems promising. Keep in mind the weather is much cooler now than it was in the summer and this may explain, in part, why the input plug and cable are not getting too warm. Regardless, I will continue to monitor temps with my laser gun. Does anyone have a similar experience of any thoughts about these observations?
Thanks for the review Tom. For me, the Scheduled Departure is an important feature I would like to keep. So I will stay away from the Grizzle Duo for the time being. I do like the unit and I think it could work great with our Chevy vehicles once the Scheduled Departure functionality works. In an unrelated note, please note that the in the "Warranty" section of the ChargerRater slide, you have " >= 1 YR: -5" but I think you meant "
Great review Tom. Wow. Hopefully Ford updates their software soon. What a shocker. I want a duo charger in the future. This maybe a good choice. Thanks
I am thinking that heavy cable might be good in a commercial setting, something to consider if you are a fleet operator where robust cable jackets should be considered.
Hey Tom! I asked Grizzl-E and they don’t plan to make a smart-Duo. Are you aware of any other dual charging options that are smart? With our Bolt EUV, we don’t really need a smart EVSE but with our 2015 Leaf we need to estimate where to stop the car at 80%. We do this now with an old old old JuiceBox Pro 40, but I was hoping to find a dual charging setup.
It is a little costly but for two cars it would be hard to beat the ClipperCreek HCS-80R Ruggedized 64 amp hardwired Shared2 charger wired to one 80amp circuit.
Hey Tom, A co in my area has one you may be interested in looking at. They are called Atom Power and make L2 charging solutions that have no EVCE. It is just a post and a charging cable. The runs go into a breaker panel that they make the electronics for. Great option for fleets & super reliable since nothing is outside in the elements besides the charging cable and the metal post. They have a bank of them free outside their offices to use and I was getting 48 amps.
Just a heads-up: I use the Grizzl-E Classic in South Florida and the stiffness from the cold temperature test ALSO occurs in a 70-80 degree garage. I spend a lot of time wrestling to unfurl the cable which wants to retract and loop on its own.
Do you have the regular or the premium cable? I live in south Florida and the EVSE is in the garage; I don’t have issues with cable stiffness, but they are bulky.
@@tonys9413 Grizzl-E did away with the regular cable option some time back. All units have the premium cable standard now. So I missed the boat on the regular cable unfortunately.
Excellent review. Although it seems to be an excellent value for homes with 2 EVs, I personally think not having an app for control, status, and recording charge history is a major oversight.
Cars canner, via an OBD2 scanner will provide the information you want. I use it on my ID.4 to track my 12 volt battery health, main battery temp, etc.
Schedule time IS WORKING. We are talking about Departure schedule, which depends on your car energy profile, set profile for 20 amps max current input and you will be fine.
My two PHEVs don't have their own charge scheduling, so I'd need it IN the EVSE. With my utility's demand charges, it is CRUCIAL to avoid peak hours. AND in the winter, there are TWO peak periods per day. I don't understand why all EVSEs are not 'smart' -- it would add what? $15 worth of communication hardware, plus some software?
Tom, can you do cm and meters (cable length) in addition to inches and feet like you did with temperature? International units like degree centigrade are much appreciated for your videos, even if you may only have the North American market in mind.
‘23 Lightning XLT SR owner and we just got my wife a new Model Y. We only have a 150 amp service. So we have to share our 50 amp breaker. This is the unit I’m seriously considering. I’m curious what other EVSE’s have two charge cords.
@2:32 - You say "you can hardwire this if you want to" That is incorrect. When I bought mine in late 2021 the manual said you could, but when it arrived my electrician and I realized the internal layout of the Duo didn't match the instructions for hardwiring. I contacted United Chargers and they updated the manual the next day. It now clearly says that hardwiring is not an option. Overall I'm happy with the Duo despite having to install a NEMA 6-50 rather than hardwiring it as I originally planned.
Excellent job reviewing EV and Chargers in general. Have you reviewed the REV+ dual EV charger. I don't think no one has. Home Depot sales it, but even the REV+ website doesn't offer a lot of confidence. I'm looking to purchase a dual charger soon for a Mach-e and a Tesla. Please help!
Please hook up two smart units and demonstrate the power sharing! For $150 more you can buy two smart versions with power sharing and place them wherever you want. I assume you could even connect them to a single 60-, 80-, or 100-amp circuit and configure the power sharing accordingly.
Hey Tom, I’m the guy who just bought a Ford lightning. You guys had read my email. I have a important question! I already bought the refurbished model it’s being installed tomorrow and I have no idea whether or not it’s the model that allows scheduled departure. is there some indication on there?
Manuals with so many devices these days are printed in an unreadably small font. I like the QR code to reference the manual, but, putting it on a piece of paper is just dumb. Put it on the face of the device and you’ll have it forever.
Tom, I enjoy your videos, Thanks. Question: when speaking about the coiled cables during the cold test, what is the technical reason that you say that it's not good to have the cable coiled rather than having it hang loosely? I'm curious about what is the danger of having it coiled. Thanks.
Over all a good charger but the app reported two session out of 30 that have been over my battery pack limit being utilized. Anyone else seen this issue? I have an ioniq 5 with a 77kwh battery pack but two charging sessions were over that ( 100kwh and 81 kwh) the car stopped charing but not sure what happened with the charger and where did that power go? Hate to waste power when home charging. Is this a known issue, and should I be concerned or just a chargelab app issue?
Battery charging is not 100% efficient. Chargers have losses, batteries take more energy to recharge than has been drained from them. Typically, level 2 overall charging efficiency is around 85-90%. The lost energy is used to heat the planet up. ,😜
Lots of people have problems with GrizzlE chargers on the Mach-E forums. I was really impressed with the construction and almost bought one myself, but glad I didn't.
@@1970351C2V the only time I ever got a fault indication was a power outage in my home that was remedied by unplugging and replugging the EVSE. Worked fine ever since. I wonder what the particulars were in those circumstances
Interested to hear your comments about the J1772 connector. I have an older Grizzl-E with a cheap connector. When I noticed the different design on the newer units, I almost spent 160.00 for a new cable and connector. I guess I won’t do that!! Thanks very much for keeping us informed about EVSE and for going into so much detail. Although…you might have shattered my faith in your wisdom when you admitted having both a Rivian and a Lightning.
Hard to justify this when you can but 2 Tesla Wall Chargers currently at $350 each that can also load share for $99 less; though you would need a Tesla to J1772 adapter if you are not charging a Tesla
Another great video! Thank you. Does the Duo generate any excessive heat, in the box, while charging two cars at once? For that matter do any of your wall mounted EVSE boxes get hot while connected to a car and charging?
Hey Tom ! I love your content. I was wondering if there has been an update in the firmware/software so that it will enable scheduled departure. My wife drives a Mach-E and I will be getting a lightning soon and this charger would be perfect. We are just worried because we live in the Midwest and the scheduled departure is a great feature for the winter.
Would be an even better charger if it did 50amps. Having one Chargepoint Home Flex at 50amps is better than having the two plugs in my perspective. We have two EVs. An Ioniq5 and Kona Electric. Chargpoint Home Flex does a great job.
Seems to me that anybody who bought this charger and is not working properly. Should be able to send it in to get it to work properly. Their warranty should not be voided just because they bought an earlier version. They can’t fix it over the air fine, but they should be able to send the charger in and have it fixed so that it will support departure charging…
As a Tesla owner it would be nice if I could order the unit with one or two Tesla connectors. I know I can use the adapter but that is bothersome because I want keep that in the car.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney can the F150 with its included Nema plug share a circuit with a power sharing capable unit ? I have to park my F150 outside the garage and a rav 4 prime inside. I am reluctant to run a cable under the garage door on a regular basis so I was thinking of having 2 nema outlets on a shared circuit.
The Lightning can accept up to 80-amps. Yes, higher powered units would be great, especially an 80-amp version that could split 9.6 kW (40-amps) to each vehicle.
Tom, question. Please recommend chargers that have the following 3 characteristics: 1) Programable by time, i.e., you can set the on and off time for the charger, 2) programable to turn off at a designate mileage or state of charge (my Jag EV does not have this feature internally), and 3) programable for rate of charge (amperage). I’ll then rewatch the videos on units you recommend. Thanks so much.
What do you think about installing an EVSE in a garage, and a remote holster just outside the garage? Our garage is too small to really fit a car in it, but installing the EVSE outside probably requires a NEMA 4 rating in our area. So we could install the EVSE just inside our garage door, and the remote holster just outside the garage door. I'm not sure if the cable would be happy about getting crushed by the garage door all the time though
You definitely don't want the cable being pinned to the floor of the garage all of the time. I have seen people cut holes in the house to feed the cable out and then seal the hole up nicely.
You could make a small cut out in your garage door weatherstripping that could avoid cable pinching. My LCS-30P has a thin enough cable that it does not fen pinched where the weatherstripping is removed.
The torque spec for the cover is really low!! It calls for 13.88 lbs-in which is about 1.15 lb-ft!! That's finger tight!! Usually M6 bolts are torque anywhere from 7 lbs-ft to 12 lbs-ft. I have a 3/8 socket torque wrench and the lowest setting is 30 lbs-in which is about 2.5 lbs-ft
This charger has a very good price, but too many software flaws. When one of my EVs has completed charging, I want the entire 40A available for for the other EV. Limiting a 40A unit to 32A max when charging two vehicles is awful. That makes it 32A charger, not a 40A. My preference is direct wire for safety at 48A (11.5kW). Lack of scheduled charging is another big software miss. I wonder if their Smart-Charger product line has a duo that fixes these problems for a little more money. We are a 2-EV household and going forward many families like Tom’s & mine will have two.
Tesla wall connector is $350 each, x 2 = $700 and its smart, can load share (duh), and can be limited in AMPS on both hardware and software, is connected with Wifi, smaller cable wont freeze, lighter, cooler look (unarguably, but also not) and and can charge the majority of EV's on the road (pun) ... also you can make money by joining the chargers to the network (win win if you are a business).
Not quite correct, second 40 amps outlet is at least $500 to install, and you must have 100 amps available power in your panel. Not everybody has it, and still with 2 cheap Tesla chargers (plastic enclosure and 20 feet short cables) Duo is at least $500 cheaper.
@@unitedchargers The Tesla charger cables are 24'. This DUO charger splits one 50 amp circuit. You can do the same with 2 Tesla chargers and as a bonus have far better software capabilities. Please watch Tom's the video to see the limitations of the DUO.
In the UK we Have a Charger unit called an Easee Its From Norway I have one fitted to my Garage and it is impressive as it has its own Robot which is called so that you can use it on your phone with its own app software or my vehicles own app software on my phone plus you can add another charger unit to mine without having to rewire back to the source all you have to do is connect it to the old unit and it shares the power through its software so far as its winter it's doing its job without any difficulties it also locks the cables in the charger while charging I am not sure if all chargers do this as I am new to this so if only one is using it will give the car a full charge capacity no longer splitting the power but as soon as you plug another car it will split it back to normal split power. I am not sure but I think Easee is coming to the US if not already there. so here you are tom here is the link to the easee site ps no virus on the other side have checked it out it's fine so here you are easee.com/uk/home-charging/?C%20search%20%7C%20uk%20%7C%20brand%20%7C%20wc&%20msclkid=db53df1a11271da440cebcba25bb1894 it's one long link but I think you might find it useful and find out what it is a robot in the unit is I have no clue but it is not cheap apparently it was nearly a 1000 pounds as I had mine fitted free with the deal of buying the car a Vauxhall Mokka Ultimate EV car in my avatar so all the best Tom from John from Rugby UK.

It is a little costly but for two cars it would be hard to beat the ClipperCreek HCS-80R Ruggedized 64 amp hardwired Shared2 charger wired to one 80amp circuit.
Note this ClipperCreek comes with a 5 year warranty. 17:16
BTW for Your power & weatherproofing you are using ≤ 40 but it should just be < since 40=0 and the ≥ 48 should be just > since 48=2
Thanks for reminding me. I've been meaning to remind my editor to change that for about a month now!
Cars canner, via an OBD2 scanner will provide the information you want. I use it on my ID.4 to track my 12 volt battery health, main battery temp, etc.
Tom, I think the lack of schedule time capability is almost a diaqualifier for folks who have peak/ off peak electricity rates.
Schedule time IS WORKING. We are talking about Departure schedule, which depends on your car energy profile, set profile for 20 amps max current input and you will be fine.
Pete, I explain in the video that scheduled charging times do work. It scheduled departure times that give the DUO issues.
Watch it again.
Tom, can you do cm and meters (cable length) in addition to inches and feet like you did with temperature? International units like degree centigrade are much appreciated for your videos, even if you may only have the North American market in mind.
OK, good suggestion
‘23 Lightning XLT SR owner and we just got my wife a new Model Y. We only have a 150 amp service. So we have to share our 50 amp breaker. This is the unit I’m seriously considering. I’m curious what other EVSE’s have two charge cords.
@2:32 - You say "you can hardwire this if you want to"
That is incorrect.
Tom, you need to get an OBD dongle and software to spy on the OBC. That’s what I do with e-Golf.
Wow. Scheduled departure is huge. What a shame.
Is there any update on the duo charger and scheduled departure problem?
Has this been fixed in the current units?
Would appreciate an update, Thanks!
Tom, did they ever fix the scheduled charging issue? Don't see any update in the description.
I wish this had smart functionality (mostly because I am geek and like to see the power details). I would buy it right now if it did.
Are there any dual smart chargers? Not being able to do firmware updates is a deal breaker. Have you ever looked at the REV+ Dual-Port?
The lost energy is used to heat the planet up. ,😜
Is the pin mount compatible with existing grizzl-e units? That would make it easy to swap.
Yes
Lots of people have problems with GrizzlE chargers on the Mach-E forums. I was really impressed with the construction and almost bought one myself, but glad I didn't.
What type of problems? My experience had been almost entirely positive
@@Necrotron Various issues but the most common seems to be a station fault / failure to charge.
@@1970351C2V the only time I ever got a fault indication was a power outage in my home that was remedied by unplugging and replugging the EVSE. Worked fine ever since. I wonder what the particulars were in those circumstances
@@Necrotron People seem to like them right up until they stop working. I almost bought one myself but am glad I didn't.
@@1970351C2V got a link? I would like to read about it
Interested to hear your comments about the J1772 connector.
Has scheduled departure time been resolved? We have a Leaf that we use scheduled departure.
Hard to justify this when you can but 2 Tesla Wall Chargers currently at $350 each that can also load share for $99 less; though you would need a Tesla to J1772 adapter if you are not charging a Tesla
You will also have to pay for a second nema outlet installed or a second hardwire from the breaker panel if available
When two ev cars are plugged in and receiving 20 amps each. How many miles per hour charge can you expect to each car?
Another great video! Thank you. Does the Duo generate any excessive heat, in the box, while charging two cars at once? For that matter do any of your wall mounted EVSE boxes get hot while connected to a car and charging?
No, Duo does not generate any heat, it is metal enclosure and one of good benefits of having metal enclosure is heat dissipation it provides.
I don't have any news on that yet
@stateofcharge do you charge your lightning on preferred times? I think the duo is giving issues to my Lightning
Would be an even better charger if it did 50amps.
Having one Chargepoint Home Flex at 50amps is better than having the two plugs in my perspective. We have two EVs. An Ioniq5 and Kona Electric. Chargpoint Home Flex does a great job.
Totally agree. 48-amps would be an improvement but it would have to be hardwired though. I recommend hardwiring, but many people prefer plug-ins.
Do you operate your ChargePoint Home Flex at 50 amps or at 48 amps?
@Bob Stevenson Technically it's 48amps
I wish Electrify America could work this way!
The fact that this charger is $800 has no smart features and app is a huge deal breaker for me.
Can the Duo be hardwired like the Classic?
Grizzl-e Duo manual states:
Plug-in NEMA 14-50 or Plug-in NEMA 6-50
Not able to be hardwired
Is it now able to be hardwired?
I hope so.
Yes it can
Seems to me that anybody who bought this charger and is not working properly. Should be able to send it in to get it to work properly. Their warranty should not be voided just because they bought an earlier version. They can’t fix it over the air fine, but they should be able to send the charger in and have it fixed so that it will support departure charging…
Has Grizzl-e fixed the departure issue yet?
As a Tesla owner it would be nice if I could order the unit with one or two Tesla connectors. I know I can use the adapter but that is bothersome because I want keep that in the car.
I was just looking at this unit today and you can do 2X J1772, 2X Tesla connectors, or one of each.
Would like to see more higher power charger options. What's the charge rate on the F-150 for example?
The Lightning Standard range can accept 48-amps (11.5 kW) the Extended range battery versions can accept 80-amps (19.2 kW)
@@kwekujangha9193 Yes, you can absolutely do that.
The Lightning can accept up to 80-amps. Yes, higher powered units would be great, especially an 80-amp version that could split 9.6 kW (40-amps) to each vehicle.
Mine stop working within the first 50 days. Blinking red 5 times and buzzing
Who else makes something similiar, I really want the charging data...
What is the Model number of this one? I can get up to a $500 rebate on certain ones.
the Ford App does show you how much power you are drawing
Tom, question. Please recommend chargers that have the following 3 characteristics:
1) Programable by time, i.e., you can set the on and off time for the charger,
2) programable to turn off at a designate mileage or state of charge (my Jag EV does not have this feature internally), and
3) programable for rate of charge (amperage).
I’ll then rewatch the videos on units you recommend. Thanks so much.
???
So just to be clear, it can do scheduled charging, just not departure time schedules charging, there's a big difference there.
The vast majority of users are not gonna care about a thick cable. Most of us are not dealing with that kind of weather.
I have this unit. It overheats in direct sunlight on a 95+ degree day. I do not recommend it. Black housing probably doesn’t help
Have you discussed this with United Chargers? It's supposed to have been tested to operate up to 122F.
Can ford do OTA😂?
Damn, this thing is heavy!!!! Hahahahahaha
Yes, definitely another good option.
I'd agree, certainly the best option for Tesla owners. Also other NACS compliant cars like Aptera (in the future).
Thank you for plugging in your PHEVs. I have a neighbor who has never charged his 4xe.
I am not sure but I think Easee is coming to the US if not already there. so here you are tom here is the link to the easee site ps no virus on the other side have checked it out it's fine so here you are

it's one long link but I think you might find it useful and find out what it is a robot in the unit is I have no clue but it is not cheap apparently it was nearly a 1000 pounds as I had mine fitted free with the deal of buying the car a Vauxhall Mokka Ultimate EV car in my avatar so all the best Tom from John from Rugby UK.
