Gecko Moria should be one step above trash considering he made a suicidal charge of Blackbeard’s island just to recover one of his men, on the slight chance that he was still alive.
Moria wasn't even a bad Captain, lazy sure but the dude wasn't throwing his crew away like nothing or purposely running them into death. I'm sure Moria did think he had a chance against Kaido but after he lost he made the best decision possible which was becoming a Warlord making sure nobody could really touch his crew. Not any pirate rivals because besides Luffy who else would be dumb enough to try to take down a Warlord and have the Marines on their backs, not to mention he made sure to stay in Paradise and not venture into the New World. Not only that but he also seemed to care about his crew, allowing them many freedoms on his ship. Also let's not forget that not only did Moria invade BB's island for his crewmate, but when Perona found out that he was being kept there she cared enough about her captain to literally venture into an emperor's territory alone to try to rescue him. That's some fierce loyalty there. Also js fighting and losing to Kaido shouldn't be held against him at all, Luffy literally fought Kaido and got one shot he was just able to get back up because of his crew and friends something Moria had lost most of. Tbh Moria deciding to back out of the pirate king race actually deserves props, unlike Kidd who threw himself head first into Emperor's of the sea *checks notes* 5 times until him and his crew were defeated. Moria recognized that it was too dangerous and decided to take the best course of action to keep his crew safe. Man might be a shitty person and Character, but he's definitely not a shitty captain

So when one of the THREE people he had in his crew got captured, and he got off his fat ass to go on a raid to get him back, you know it’s because he cares deeply about his people. Apparently young Moria was a lot like Luffy and cared immensely for his crew. Basically after they died his world was shattered and he lost his drive in life

He even apologized to everyone he beat up on the way after he thought Absalom was fine. Moria is truly a decent guy at heart and makes the best of his situation imo. Him never overcoming the loss of his crew and basically being depressed with his loss of drive doesn't make him a loser like many want to think. He's one of the most realistic and interesting characters in the story to me and I it saddens me that the average one piece fan does not care about character themes and what they represent, just how strong they are or how cool they look (boooring).
For someone who stole all his crew members from other pirate groups via davy back fights, Foxy's crew seem to respect him much more than one would expect them to.
I would say Law a S-tier captain. He is the one carries his entire pirate crew. Strategic and intellegent. Never betrayed his alliance. He cared for his crew safety (after Kaido captures his crew members in Wano) and never stopped believing in them even on betrayal doubts raised.
Also Law isn't a S tier captain. He abandoned his crew for like 2 whole arcs and they were captured under his watch in Wano. Now him and Bepo are abandoning them and Luffy was the reason why his crew got separated at Sabody cuz he didn't listen to the warnings about the celestial dragons 🤷
You know it's weird, for a series about pirates, a lot of pirate crews don't really look or act like stereotypical pirates. Blackbeard and his crew are the most "pirate-y" themed pirate crew, but Shanks and Buggy also have various pirate-esque qualities about them. The rest of the pirate crews we meet are either more focused on their own unique "theme" (see Capone Bege being literally a mafia gang that happens to be seafaring) or, in the case of the Four Emperors, act more like warlords fighting over land and political/military power then the typical "loot, pillage, and plunder" we expect from typical pirates.
the message is that conventional pirates don`t achieve greatness for doing basic pirating stuff. Foxy, Goo and Bellamy (jaya) are the example, they are successful, but not great. Pirates like them don`t matter, because most pirates are like this, thats why we don`t see them like this, we just have to acknowledge they exist and move on. To be relevant, you need to have strong ideology and big goals, that will elevate your crew from pirate to Emperor, for example
The MAIN pirates we have in the series arent really pirates. Kidd, Blackbeard, and Arlong pirates are the only real pirates we really get to see because they are more interesting because they have unique stories in a world full of pirates like them.
It makes sense for the world of one piece. Most of the "pirates" in the series wouldn't be pirates if it weren't for the way the World Government is. Whitebeard would probably just be a Very earnest chief in his village, maybe running a big orphanage, Luffy would be an explorer, Kaido and Bigmom would just be actual emperors (not in a Yonko sense, just actual warlord emperors of a dictatorship state). All these people are only called pirates because they refuse to live under the WG rule while not actively trying to dethrone them (revolutionaries) that's all it takes for the WG to label you a pirate
The thing is that pirates don't act like stereotypical pirates. There is only 1 or 2 confirmed novels from people that were on pirate ships back in those days and it was confirmed by the queen. No other literary work is considered official besides them, and they inspire others to write about them. It's kinda like myths and legends that are from the Epic of Gilgamesh is heavily inspiring stories today, or how Dragon ball is heavily inspired by 2 or 3 novels, one being specifically Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. Its about collecting 8 Buddhist prayer beads(See the resemblance?). Now this is my point, Oda has clearly looked into pirate histopry, and many of the characters are based on those pirates and have direct comparisons from the official records of those pirates and how they acted. Its pretty close.
To Arlong's credit, although he hated humans, he never harmed another fishman. In fact, he cared deeply for his crew, and was genuinely worried about his injured crewmates. Hordy (yes, I'm using the English dub name) was worse in that sense, since he viewed fishmen who stood in his way- or had any interaction with humans- as traitors to their race. Still, it was Arlong who poured his personal hatred for humans into a young Hordy. There was no personal trauma, just an inherited hatred.
I don't think kid being bellow krieg is fair. While kid unquestioningly fumbled the bag, he didn't unleash a bio weapon direction at his own crew. Gas masks or not, that is not the shit a non-trash captian does

As for the waiters and pleasures as far as I am aware he never forced any of them to eat the smile fruit, and over all was just trying to make his crew stronger, granted via a shitty method.
Damn I wanted to see Captain Yorki, Brook's captain. Although he died, dude made a group of pirates who's dream was to go the New World and bring happiness to children. They valued singing and having a jolly time. The Rumbar pirates will forever by Moustache tier for me.
Yeah, I personally was waiting to see Kuro. I really wish Kuro was apart of Buggy's crew because it feels like he would've fit perfectly with the Cross Guild and would've pretty much accomplish his dream, which is pretty much being a Warlord (Since Buggy was a Warlord, Kuro could've done Pirate things he wanted without constantly being chased by Marines.
He should join Cross Guild. Peronas ties to him and Mihawk and him rejecting Bb, and now that Buggy wants to claim the one piece it would be like a missing piece of a puzzle. Imagine Moria Pumping up Buggy with his shadows for a fight that would be sooo hype. Also, I would like to see Moria saving the Cross Guild or the part of the crew that's with him, with the twist that not everyone else is dying, no he dies so they can live and his burden is lifted, dying as a hero and seeing his old friends again.

I feel like Moria actually deserves a higher rank than trashcan. Yes, he lost his entire crew, but the argument to be made that it was 20 before kaido became a truly known so some slack can be given, and he truly does care about his crew. He went to fight another yonko to save Absalon, and he also inspires some degree of loyalty amongst them with Perona spending time to actually try and free him and he sticks his guns enough to actually not submit to a yonko which more can be said about half the worst generation I’m not saying he’s the best, but I’m just saying, he deserves to be over hawkins
I personally think shanks is a contender for getting the eyepatch that marks the end of one piece. He’s the most piratey pirate, so I think the eyepatch would just complete him and his look.
big disagree. the reason zoro has a scar on his eye is to show something there is missing. Oda wants us to notice that but zoro is not missing an eye. he is missing an eyepatch. most likely he will tie his bandana up like usual. however cover his eye. then it will be cut up by mihawk missing everything except for his eye that was previously cut. giving him the only eye patch in the whole series

Luffy actually isn't a great captain. He is very selfish, he doesn't think through decisions, aside from fighting he is nearly incapable on his own, he is too childlike, he is rarely ever serious, he ignores plans, he only does anything based on what he feels like, and many more issues. He is kind and fun and will do his best to help his crew so he isn't a bad captain either.

Yeah Luffy's a good guy but I wouldn't call him a good captain. He's selfish to the point that it borders on psychopathic and he regularly puts his crew in danger in order to satisfy his own whims. It's only cute and endearing 'cause he's the protagonist but honestly if he was any other character he'd be a villain. Law is a much better captain, he does whatever he can to look after his crew and always prioritises getting them out of danger first and foremost.

I have a soft spot for Don Krieg, not for his character at all, but because several of my friends and I started One Piece around the same-ish time, and one of our other friends, who was caught up, told us that Don Krieg was the strongest character in the series, and several of us believed him up until we got to the Baratie arc.
I don't know how the hell kid is worse than krieg- they both got their crews dead but atleast kid stayed 2 years in grandline and even defeated an yonko with a special Law unlike a krieg who visited grandline and crew gone :)
True. Also the way he stands up for his crew (when people were laughing at Killer) or believes in them and trusts them (not only Killer but also Heat and Wire). Luffy also got the strawhats into dangerous situations without thinking about their well beings.
Kids success was a feat of strength, not leadership. Kid was a terrible leader and their destruction was only a matter of smashing into something too big to overcome. Luffy is arguably just as bull-headed as Kid, but he also defers to the counsel of his more level headed crewmates when it matters. Kid getting as far as he did was despite his leadership, not because of it

I'd move charlotte lin lin up towards the A and S tier, because despite being a pirate, she actually built a massive kingdom (not just took one over). She did have amnesia for a while that made her a liability.
Kaido was ranked way too generously. His whole organization was built a hierarchy based on strength and one of his biggest assets, doflamingo, was ultimately using kaido as a means to further his own agenda. On top of that Kaido really doesn't do a whole lot outside of Wano in the grand scheme of things and his plans ultimately failed before it ever really gained any ground. Kaido should be B tier at most.
Did Shanks block Kaido from going to Marineford? In Wano they have 20K troops but how mobile are they? you don't see too many Beast Pirate ships (Jack's destroyed in Zou) and post-Wano their numbers greatly reduced, Big Mom's fleet also took damage in WCI

Gekko is Luffy without Kuma, for separating his crew at a pivotal moment. And Luffy even with Kuma would have ended up like Gekko if he didn't have Reyleigh and Jimbei. After Ace's death if it wasn't for those two characters he would have been broken. Sure he may have remembered his crew later, but as we saw when Ace died, Luffy suffered from shock paralysis. Gekko literally had no one else to depend on, and made it all the way to Wano in that one year, and like many have mentioned cared just as deeply for his crew as Luffy. Also when he lost to Luffy, he literally was about to win, when a tower crushed him. Literally Luffy immediately after that collapsed and luffy's entire crew was about to become dust because of the sunlight. Might I add, that this was after Luffy already had beaten Lucci, and Croc, neither of which took a hit from a combo gear three and gear 2. He was stronger, and still is relatively strong (if he's still a....). He deserves at least B tier, his crew may have died, but that's a consequence of being ambitious, and being a pirate.

Surely sir crocodile had a "pirate crew" with the baroque works. Then some would think that Aladin is the new captain of the sun pirates. Alvida was a great captain in east blue. Donut Ace used to be a captain. Just give them a slap in the THEY EXIST catogory, or used to. But missing the single greatest pirate captain to exist in anime only is the Great Kong-fu Dugong of the Sea animal Pirates. Great list still tho.
If you classify as crews currently exist, Alvida joined Buggy, as did crocodile (technically). So they don't count as captains. Dorry and Broggy apparently are with Shanks. Aladdin counts though
Luffy also runs his crew into walls its just that his crew is stronger and can break the wall. That doesn't make Kidd a worse captain it just means he isn't as good at choosing crewmates.
I also feel that putting foxy and Arlong in the same tier is unfair because Arlong treated Nami with no respect while she was an Arlong pirate. At least Foxy has love for his crew and would never treat any of his crew members like that.
Every other member was treated phenomenally though. Took them out of the dangerous new world and made his crew live like kings in the backwaters of the east blue
Calling nami a crew member was one of the many lies he told her to keep her making maps. On the other hand, he genuinely loved his Fishman brothers. The loyalty of his crew was well earned on Arlongs part.

In the Arc he was very careless(allowing Nami to move freely around his base even though she was a major security risk), he was selfish( putting his entire crew in danger for his own benefit), and he bit off more than he could chew(because he's a shark).
to say that moria is a bad captain is wrong. he has only hit too strong opponents so far. He goes to a yonko in the precinct alone just to save a nakama. Or Perona left as soon as she heard where he was. That's something a straw hat would do for Luffy.

I have a weirdly strong memory of ol' crab hand Gyro since the chapter he's in is what started my journey of getting back into One Piece after leaving it in my childhood. I read the Gyro chapter in a random issue of Shonen Jump I picked up, and binged the anime nearly every night of highschool to get caught up.
Kidd is a very unfortunate character. He's very similar to luffy when it comes to mostly baseless confidence and recklessness, except he clearly was less favoured by the plot so he couldn't quite make it. There's a universe where he had enough plot armour for his recklessness to pay off a little longer, and he would've easily made it much further in the pirate world.
The thing is he's a prick and a bully killing innocents and shi. It's not that he's unfortunate it's that he got what he deserved. I would even say a despicable human like Kidd can be glad Shanks didn't unalive him.

Luffy went head on with half his crew against her... Kid didn't attack Kaido either it was Kaido who invaded his island. Also Kid trusts and believes in his crew like Luffy does (when he entrusted Killer to fight Hawkins or believed that Heat and Wire would do good in the war) and stands up for his crew and protect them (when people were laughing at Killer) so much so that his crew really loves him and would sacrifice everything to save him (giving up the road porneglyphs). All this put him automatically above 95% of all other captains on the list. Oh BTW there were tons of situations were Luffy put the strawhats in danger as well without thinking about their wellbeings. Knock up stream, jumping on the octopus when going down from the sky island, jumping down from Zou, choosing the island where the needle moved the most etc. It doesn't sound that differently from what Kid would do or did 😅 And luffy is my favorite char btw but the Kid slander is pathetic and ridiculous at this point.

I’d put Whitebeard in A tier due to the string of failings as a captain that led to his death. Failed as a captain to spot and stamp out a mutiny, let one crew member kill another, failed to stop a third crew member from pursuing the first one, which led to that his imprisonment, then a war to save him which WB lost, then lost that crew member, then died himself. No doubt he was S tier or above in his heyday, but that’s a tough string of F tier captain moments at the end

I don't think Kidd deserves trash tier, that's a very unfavorable look at his career throughout the series. Sure, his time in the New World ended poorly, but its really not like he screwed up on such significant levels that he should be rated worse than, y'know, *Don Krieg*, who was literally only spared getting finished off by Mihawk cuz of Zoro entertaining him. Guy had a (relatively) competent and loyal crew, and while he did run into the wall that was Kaido, a) he was set up by Apoo to get ambushed and Hawkins surrendered and b) if Luffy getting into conflicts with Kaido and Big Mom before he was ready to fight them (including getting one-shot by Kaido) isn't grounds for trash tier there, it shouldn't be that big a black mark against Kidd. The complete mess of power scaling also shouldn't go against him too much either, Kidd can get the winning blow against Big Mom instead of Law, and Law can go up against Blackbeard and at least trouble him before going, but "Blackbeard troubles him enough to talk to Whitebeard about it" Shanks can relatively easily one-shot Kidd... I still don't buy it.

Moria wasn't even a bad Captain, lazy sure but the dude wasn't throwing his crew away like nothing or purposely running them into death. I'm sure Moria did think he had a chance against Kaido but after he lost he made the best decision possible which was becoming a Warlord making sure nobody could really touch his crew. Not any pirate rivals because besides Luffy who else would be dumb enough to try to take down a Warlord and have the Marines on their backs, not to mention he made sure to stay in Paradise and not venture into the New World. Not only that but he also seemed to care about his crew, allowing them many freedoms on his ship. Also let's not forget that not only did Moria invade BB's island for his crewmate, but when Perona found out that he was being kept there she cared enough about her captain to literally venture into an emperor's territory alone to try to rescue him. That's some fierce loyalty there.
Also js fighting and losing to Kaido shouldn't be held against him at all, Luffy literally fought Kaido and got one shot he was just able to get back up because of his crew and friends something Moria had lost most of. Tbh Moria deciding to back out of the pirate king race actually deserves props, unlike Kidd who threw himself head first into Emperor's of the sea *checks notes* 5 times until him and his crew were defeated. He even apologized to everyone he beat up on the way after he thought Absalom was fine. Moria is truly a decent guy at heart and makes the best of his situation imo. Him never overcoming the loss of his crew and basically being depressed with his loss of drive doesn't make him a loser like many want to think.
He's one of the most realistic and interesting characters in the story to me and I it saddens me that the average one piece fan does not care about character themes and what they represent, just how strong they are or how cool they look (boooring).

I would say Law a S-tier captain. He is the one carries his entire pirate crew. Strategic and intellegent. Never betrayed his alliance. He cared for his crew safety (after Kaido captures his crew members in Wano) and never stopped believing in them even on betrayal doubts raised.

You know it's weird, for a series about pirates, a lot of pirate crews don't really look or act like stereotypical pirates. Blackbeard and his crew are the most "pirate-y" themed pirate crew, but Shanks and Buggy also have various pirate-esque qualities about them. The rest of the pirate crews we meet are either more focused on their own unique "theme" (see Capone Bege being literally a mafia gang that happens to be seafaring) or, in the case of the Four Emperors, act more like warlords fighting over land and political/military power then the typical "loot, pillage, and plunder" we expect from typical pirates.
the message is that conventional pirates don`t achieve greatness for doing basic pirating stuff. Foxy, Goo and Bellamy (jaya) are the example, they are successful, but not great. Pirates like them don`t matter, because most pirates are like this, thats why we don`t see them like this, we just have to acknowledge they exist and move on. To be relevant, you need to have strong ideology and big goals, that will elevate your crew from pirate to Emperor, for example
The MAIN pirates we have in the series arent really pirates. Kidd, Blackbeard, and Arlong pirates are the only real pirates we really get to see because they are more interesting because they have unique stories in a world full of pirates like them.

It makes sense for the world of one piece. Most of the "pirates" in the series wouldn't be pirates if it weren't for the way the World Government is. Whitebeard would probably just be a Very earnest chief in his village, maybe running a big orphanage, Luffy would be an explorer, Kaido and Bigmom would just be actual emperors (not in a Yonko sense, just actual warlord emperors of a dictatorship state).
All these people are only called pirates because they refuse to live under the WG rule while not actively trying to dethrone them (revolutionaries) that's all it takes for the WG to label you a pirate
The thing is that pirates don't act like stereotypical pirates. There is only 1 or 2 confirmed novels from people that were on pirate ships back in those days and it was confirmed by the queen. No other literary work is considered official besides them, and they inspire others to write about them.
It's kinda like myths and legends that are from the Epic of Gilgamesh is heavily inspiring stories today, or how Dragon ball is heavily inspired by 2 or 3 novels, one being specifically Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. Its about collecting 8 Buddhist prayer beads(See the resemblance?).
Now this is my point, Oda has clearly looked into pirate histopry, and many of the characters are based on those pirates and have direct comparisons from the official records of those pirates and how they acted. Its pretty close.
To Arlong's credit, although he hated humans, he never harmed another fishman. In fact, he cared deeply for his crew, and was genuinely worried about his injured crewmates. Hordy (yes, I'm using the English dub name) was worse in that sense, since he viewed fishmen who stood in his way- or had any interaction with humans- as traitors to their race.
Still, it was Arlong who poured his personal hatred for humans into a young Hordy. There was no personal trauma, just an inherited hatred.
I don't think kid being bellow krieg is fair. While kid unquestioningly fumbled the bag, he didn't unleash a bio weapon direction at his own crew. Gas masks or not, that is not the shit a non-trash captian does

oni ice was not Kaido, it was one of his commanders who did it but not the big guy himself so not counting that against him.
As for the waiters and pleasures as far as I am aware he never forced any of them to eat the smile fruit, and over all was just trying to make his crew stronger, granted via a shitty method.

I feel like Moria actually deserves a higher rank than trashcan. Yes, he lost his entire crew, but the argument to be made that it was 20 before kaido became a truly known so some slack can be given, and he truly does care about his crew. He went to fight another yonko to save Absalon, and he also inspires some degree of loyalty amongst them with Perona spending time to actually try and free him and he sticks his guns enough to actually not submit to a yonko which more can be said about half the worst generation I’m not saying he’s the best, but I’m just saying, he deserves to be over hawkins

Oda wants us to notice that but zoro is not missing an eye. he is missing an eyepatch. most likely he will tie his bandana up like usual. however cover his eye. then it will be cut up by mihawk missing everything except for his eye that was previously cut. giving him the only eye patch in the whole series

Luffy actually isn't a great captain. He is very selfish, he doesn't think through decisions, aside from fighting he is nearly incapable on his own, he is too childlike, he is rarely ever serious, he ignores plans, he only does anything based on what he feels like, and many more issues.
He is kind and fun and will do his best to help his crew so he isn't a bad captain either.

Yeah Luffy's a good guy but I wouldn't call him a good captain. He's selfish to the point that it borders on psychopathic and he regularly puts his crew in danger in order to satisfy his own whims. It's only cute and endearing 'cause he's the protagonist but honestly if he was any other character he'd be a villain. Law is a much better captain, he does whatever he can to look after his crew and always prioritises getting them out of danger first and foremost.
I loved Liam saying “It’s Foxy and no it’s not a joke.” I also would love to see a fight between Crab hand and Black leg. Great video over all but I was sad that Peach Beard was not in the list. I hope Liam does another captain list in the future to include the ones not mentioned in this list.

I have a soft spot for Don Krieg, not for his character at all, but because several of my friends and I started One Piece around the same-ish time, and one of our other friends, who was caught up, told us that Don Krieg was the strongest character in the series, and several of us believed him up until we got to the Baratie arc.

Kaido should be B tier at most.
Did Shanks block Kaido from going to Marineford? In Wano they have 20K troops but how mobile are they? you don't see too many Beast Pirate ships (Jack's destroyed in Zou) and post-Wano their numbers greatly reduced, Big Mom's fleet also took damage in WCI

Gekko is Luffy without Kuma, for separating his crew at a pivotal moment.
And Luffy even with Kuma would have ended up like Gekko if he didn't have Reyleigh and Jimbei. After Ace's death if it wasn't for those two characters he would have been broken. Sure he may have remembered his crew later, but as we saw when Ace died, Luffy suffered from shock paralysis. Gekko literally had no one else to depend on, and made it all the way to Wano in that one year, and like many have mentioned cared just as deeply for his crew as Luffy. Also when he lost to Luffy, he literally was about to win, when a tower crushed him. Literally Luffy immediately after that collapsed and luffy's entire crew was about to become dust because of the sunlight.
Might I add, that this was after Luffy already had beaten Lucci, and Croc, neither of which took a hit from a combo gear three and gear 2.
He was stronger, and still is relatively strong (if he's still a....).
He deserves at least B tier, his crew may have died, but that's a consequence of being ambitious, and being a pirate.

Surely sir crocodile had a "pirate crew" with the baroque works. Then some would think that Aladin is the new captain of the sun pirates. Alvida was a great captain in east blue. Donut Ace used to be a captain. Just give them a slap in the THEY EXIST catogory, or used to. But missing the single greatest pirate captain to exist in anime only is the Great Kong-fu Dugong of the Sea animal Pirates. Great list still tho.
If you classify as crews currently exist, Alvida joined Buggy, as did crocodile (technically). So they don't count as captains. Dorry and Broggy apparently are with Shanks. Aladdin counts though

I also feel that putting foxy and Arlong in the same tier is unfair because Arlong treated Nami with no respect while she was an Arlong pirate. At least Foxy has love for his crew and would never treat any of his crew members like that.
Arlong was seeing Nami as a slave for the crew, not a real crew member.
Every other member was treated phenomenally though. Took them out of the dangerous new world and made his crew live like kings in the backwaters of the east blue

On the other hand, he genuinely loved his Fishman brothers. The loyalty of his crew was well earned on Arlongs part.

In the Arc he was very careless(allowing Nami to move freely around his base even though she was a major security risk), he was selfish( putting his entire crew in danger for his own benefit), and he bit off more than he could chew(because he's a shark).
to say that moria is a bad captain is wrong. he has only hit too strong opponents so far. He goes to a yonko in the precinct alone just to save a nakama. Or Perona left as soon as she heard where he was. That's something a straw hat would do for Luffy.

I have a weirdly strong memory of ol' crab hand Gyro since the chapter he's in is what started my journey of getting back into One Piece after leaving it in my childhood. I read the Gyro chapter in a random issue of Shonen Jump I picked up, and binged the anime nearly every night of highschool to get caught up.
Kidd is a very unfortunate character. He's very similar to luffy when it comes to mostly baseless confidence and recklessness, except he clearly was less favoured by the plot so he couldn't quite make it. There's a universe where he had enough plot armour for his recklessness to pay off a little longer, and he would've easily made it much further in the pirate world.
Well he is based off of the most unfortunate pirate captain in history so it makes sense.
The thing is he's a prick and a bully killing innocents and shi. It's not that he's unfortunate it's that he got what he deserved. I would even say a despicable human like Kidd can be glad Shanks didn't unalive him.

Also Kid trusts and believes in his crew like Luffy does (when he entrusted Killer to fight Hawkins or believed that Heat and Wire would do good in the war) and stands up for his crew and protect them (when people were laughing at Killer) so much so that his crew really loves him and would sacrifice everything to save him (giving up the road porneglyphs).
All this put him automatically above 95% of all other captains on the list.
Oh BTW there were tons of situations were Luffy put the strawhats in danger as well without thinking about their wellbeings. Knock up stream, jumping on the octopus when going down from the sky island, jumping down from Zou, choosing the island where the needle moved the most etc. It doesn't sound that differently from what Kid would do or did 😅

I’d put Whitebeard in A tier due to the string of failings as a captain that led to his death. Failed as a captain to spot and stamp out a mutiny, let one crew member kill another, failed to stop a third crew member from pursuing the first one, which led to that his imprisonment, then a war to save him which WB lost, then lost that crew member, then died himself.
No doubt he was S tier or above in his heyday, but that’s a tough string of F tier captain moments at the end

the recency bias with kid is insane
I don't think Kidd deserves trash tier, that's a very unfavorable look at his career throughout the series. Sure, his time in the New World ended poorly, but its really not like he screwed up on such significant levels that he should be rated worse than, y'know, *Don Krieg*, who was literally only spared getting finished off by Mihawk cuz of Zoro entertaining him. Guy had a (relatively) competent and loyal crew, and while he did run into the wall that was Kaido, a) he was set up by Apoo to get ambushed and Hawkins surrendered and b) if Luffy getting into conflicts with Kaido and Big Mom before he was ready to fight them (including getting one-shot by Kaido) isn't grounds for trash tier there, it shouldn't be that big a black mark against Kidd.
The complete mess of power scaling also shouldn't go against him too much either, Kidd can get the winning blow against Big Mom instead of Law, and Law can go up against Blackbeard and at least trouble him before going, but "Blackbeard troubles him enough to talk to Whitebeard about it" Shanks can relatively easily one-shot Kidd... I still don't buy it.
