    The fact that these are handmade knives really intrigues me. None of this mass produced cheap quality stuff, a level of craftsmanship rarely seen today.

    I was assigned to Japan in the mid to late 1960s. I don't think that I ever saw anyone that sold or made knives while I was there. I lived off base in a small Japanese community near Hakata. I was assigned to an Intelligence unit, and often trained with the Japanese National Police on some of their exercises. I loved my time there, and wish to know how I can purchase one of the friction folders as a memento of my time there. Thank you, in advance, for your attention to this matter.

      Thank you for the comment and your story. These are available on eBay.
      Though, you must hunt/research which are the legit, authentic ones.
      The ones shipped direct from Japan or Japanese US based sellers are your best bet.

    I must have paid around ¥2400 for mine which I bought in Kyoto. First time I was in Japan I didn't buy one because I thought it was a cheap knife. Then I realized the Japanese more often then not have fair prices on things. The second trip I bought one with out hesitation.
    I also got some yamazaki ;)

    These Higonokami knifes were very popular with US occupation forces in Occupied Japan around 1948 or so. The ones I saw in the 1960's were worn out by use. At the time I didn't really know what I was looking at.

      @@LessTalkMoreDelicious The was a period in the 80's and 90's when they were. The problem was because the basic knife was unchanged they were being counterfeited so many of these fakes were dumped on the market that you have to have a Higonokami with a traceable provenance to prove they are real. Even with this is only add's a few dollars to their value, this is actually a good thing because there is no reason not to actually use a 100 years old Higonokami if it is in good condition.

    how do you tell a real higo from a fake? i have one but i can't remember where i bought it, maybe amazon (leading me to think it is probably fake). it did come in a similar box to yours, but mine has a darker finish.

    • @LessTalkMoreDelicious
      @LessTalkMoreDelicious  4 года назад +1

      I have no idea really. But if it came/shipped from Japan, it's most likely real.

    Nice video. Does the blade need to be oiled frequently to prevent rust?

    • @LessTalkMoreDelicious
      @LessTalkMoreDelicious  Год назад +1

      Mine isn't rusted. If you use it with wet objects (food) or store it outside, then it will rust.

  • @Trendsetta89

    I have basically the same one but mine doesn't have the darker finish on the spine of the blade area, and mine is a 110mm. If you think this knife is boring because it doesn't have fancy colors, serrations, or a locking mechanism, then you either know nothing or just don't appreciate the work or craftsmanship that goes in making hand forged knives from Japan. Great knife, I wish mine had the same finish. Also idea what the approximate Rockwell Hardness is to these blades? (Should be around probably 59 RW but apparently this steel can get up to 62 RWH)
