- The Queen Mary, which some feared could sink a few years ago, is making a roaring comeback. KCAL News reporter Gio Insignares is in Long Beach with the story.
Finally a news channel that refers a ship like Queen Mary as luxury ocean liner than a “cruise ship”
For a nation that once ruled the waves, we're uselss at preserving our maritime heritage. Thank you for keeping this beautiful ship alive long after our nation would have failed to.
She arrived in pretty good shape, so it's good she's being treated like the queen she is. If y'all can somehow restore our own SS United States which is rusting away in Philadelphia without a plan, we'll call it even.
A lot more difficult a task for massive ocean liners than say for automobiles or trains. finding a place to put them is already a difficult task
Queen Mary is retired, she is now a hotel.
Your country's Queen Mary is well cared for here, anyway. She's made a magnificent post-Covid comeback. There are few,if no,worries about her short term future.
The US and Royal Navy work closely together, sometimes there are many Americans on board HMS’s with you guys. I know it’s not the same glory, but the US is lacklustre today as well. I love you guys over there, don't forget what you can do!
Queen Mary has always turned a profit. It’s the greed that led to disrepair. Glad to see she’s starting to be taken care of once again. She possesses the same “romance” that Catalina Island has for native residents of Southern California. Something special.
This is why for-profit organizations can’t run historic ships. Every penny of what you make has to go back into the ship; they are simultaneously the least profitable and the most expensive museums.
It was the _government_ that shut her down during Covid. That's how she went into disrepair. She was profitable before then. It's a for profit business that has restored her and forecasting to be turning a profit with her again.
Don’t know, bong…. Look up it’s moore’s, LA, house prices. To repair a ship requires divers, special sodders, barnacle cleaning, or worse a drydock.
LA regs made permits 3x bill of labor-materials. Go back to fuming about the NHS, which we pay about the same for, but our service is immediate.
I am DEEPLY skeptical that all the issues this old ship has have been dealt with.
Unless they provide receipts for hull repairs, I would presume they fixed the parts of the ship that are visible from the outside on the dock.
That doesn't mean the hull doesn't have problems.
This is a ship that was built in the mid to late 1930s. It's older than most of the other museum ships in the United States! Excepting the aircraft carrier museums which were worked hard for a quarter-century or better in their military careers, there's no ship that's worked harder during its career than an ocean liner or cargo ship.
Yes, I have reservations that the Queen Mary was repaired in any meaningful sense.
Nice to see that Queen Mary is in such good quality now, she’s so beautiful… Hopefully there’s a future this bright in store for SS United States, because she deserves the love Mary gets too!
I remember the ceremony of the Queen Mary when it first arrived to the pier in Long Beach. They had the famous professional fitness coach Jack LaLanne swimming in front of it towing it all by himself with a rope held by his teeth.
There is footage of Queen Mary from I believe early 1968 with Petula Clark singing, walking the decks, and having a cup of tea with her. That screamed 1960s and was aired originally on NBC in living color😃
When I visited US and LA I somehow totally forgot she was at port there. Will mark this on my list of things to do for sure now!
It's well worth it,and a gorgeous hotel.I always liked "big girls"😉
10 minutes away is the USS Iowa battleship and a Victory transport ship the SS Lane Victory that helped transport munitions and supplies during WW2, Korea, and Vietnam, too.
@@Glitchunlocked Thaaank you! :D
On my bucket list to visit. One of the last of her kind. An incredible ship.
Bless the Queen Mary Regal Majestic elegant legendary beautiful Luxury liner 🥰
I have visited the USA from Australia many times and this is definitely one of my favourite attractions . Can’t wait to see it a second time one day .
The UK should have kept the RMS Olympic in 1935 and turned it into a museum ship. Instead she went to the scrap yard.
I totally agree with you. Titanic's sister would have had so many admirers. I'm sure there would be a long waiting list to board her.
Absolutely fantastic , as a brit its amazing to see how much has been done to keep her alive , it would be long gone if it was in the UK , i saw her in 2008 with my father , cant wait to go see her again
My mom and I walked around the Queen Mary last week before boarding the Carnival Panorama. I loved it!
I was always terrified of the Queen Mary as a kid. My mom would try taking us there, and I would cry because I didn't want to get on it
Is it because of the ghost stories, or did you have some sort of bad feeling?
Took the Titanic movie too much to heart?
@@Paul_Wetor Or he believed the "haunted stories" of the ship, from which a lot of were made up by Disney when they had the lease in the late 1980s. Room "B340" was also made up by them, as it was originally two cabins that were put together for the story.
She’s a devil child .
She may be in America, but she is pure British. 🇬🇧
You could say the same about most multi-generational Americans.
Sure the roots are from Britain, but she didn’t gain her full potential until left alone in America…
@@CongressSux1776 what?
@@CongressSux1776I’m pretty sure her full potential came from being an oceanliner, not from sitting in the Port of Long Beach lol
The Americans deserve a lot of credit for her success though
Britain didn’t want her when she was retired. America did.
Can't wait to stay aboard again.Thank you city of Long Beach for caring for our Queen!!
Built in Scotland, Clydebank to be exact 😊
Happy for this 😊
if only they can adopt SS united states which is now rusting.
Exactly! 🤞🤞🤞
It would be a much bigger task to restore that ship. It’s been completely gutted, and the mid-century linoleum and metal interiors (if restored) would be less desirable to look at than the Art Deco of the Queen Mary.
I wish so much I could bring my family to visit this beautiful ship! My oldest son is a veteran. What a treat it would be to visit this majestic ship someday!
Alex the Historian has a great series on RUclips where he documents all the repairs and updates
Wow a thousand years is long..
Yeah, it’s unlikely to last that long.
Perhaps he should have simply said "For Generations to come"
This is so exciting. Enjoy. Dance. Sing.
Have fun.♥️💃♥️
We stayed there in February great food and service. Great place to stay before cruising.
I want to visit soon! So happy to see such an amazing part of history and engineering back in good hands and hope this opportunity is not squandered.
1,000 years- certainly reaching for the stars- shes nearly didn’t last a hundred, hopefully with her new overhaul, and continues upkeep- lets hope for a reasonable 40- 60 at best
You can thank the state government for shutting her down during Covid. Hopefully they'll realize you can't do that to ships and not expect decay.
I hope to visit The Queen Mary some day. ❤
I loved going to stay on the queen Mary. The best part was just getting to walk around the ship. I hope they not only have kept the access there was before but given more.
She’s making a come back because they control who comes on board They can keep away the unwanted troublemakers so people feel safe that’s why.!
She is absolutely stunning.
Awesome. From a time when cruise ships and ocean liners were actually beautiful and not just big dumb hulking cities on water.
That is wonderful.
i know this is a long shot but they should put her engines back in and dry dock her repair damages done by sitting there for a lot years and make her be able to move under her own power
The engines are there, but all the boilers and all but one of the screws are gone. There’s no possible way to make her run again.
@@sirboomsalot4902 oh
@@sirboomsalot4902 Only the aft engine room remains. The forward engine room (and the boilers), both turbo generator rooms, the ship's stabilizers, and the water softening plant were all removed to make way for Jacques Cousteau's new Living Sea Museum in the '70s. Unfortunately, the museum was a flop, and the empty rooms remain.
Well of course it's possible it's just not likely. I agree tho to see her move under her own power again would be so cool.
@@ryanprocunier8538 yeah it would i think an 80 year old ship tho yeh she might have a lot of problems
The Queen Mary will become a wonder of the world one day.
Amazing ship
Welcome back queen Elizabeth
Awesome I been wanting to go see her. I thought she was closed.
That’s cool and everything and good for them. But do they still give those ghost tours on the ship if so I’ll go to the ship 🔥🔥🔥
Good to know they still care about her.
I remember the unsolved mysteries episode about all the hauntings on the ship.
I want to go to the queen Mary !
_RMS Queen Mary_ , 'Rolling Mary,' is quite the special ship. The first superliner White Star-Cunard Line built post-merger, so she took the place of _Oceanic III_ , sadly. She was famous during the Second World War as 'the Grey Ghost,' which the Germans put a bounty on, but they could never catch. Less famously, she was one of very few ships to have a dedicated synagogue, as well as a normal chapel. Some of her original whistles were given to _Queen Mary 2_, so when they called to each other, it was with much the same voice.
My favourite ocean liner is _SS United States_ , though, so seeing _Queen Mary_ restored gives me hope that William Francis Gibbs's overengineered speed demon might one day get the same.
Did you know the Queen Mary was used in the film the Poseidon adventure?
Well yeah but how did they use it is my question
I Hope to spend a night or two some day soon!
How would it be!? Being back on that ship that sailed in WW2! That would be so amazing! 🙏🏻💕 The ship kept tens of thousands safe but we must remember them and the lives lost 🙏🏻✝️
I hope she gets saved
Love to be able to afford to travel there and see her.
If i’m going on a cruise I would take The RMS Queen Mary and hopefully she will sail again
She will never sail again but you could go on the Queen Mary 2
Yet we should make a replica of the ORIGINAL Queen Elizabeth with the Queen Mary in king beach side by would be cool
QUESTION: have they figured out how to get renew the water Queen Mary is sitting in? That stuff looked pretty bad when I was last there (granted, 7 years ago).
She is so beautiful. Would been a tragedy if she were scrapped
❤
Rip Queen Elizabeth (ORIGINAL) long live Scythia
No one anticipated the level of repairs needed
There is no dry dock big enough on the West cost so all repairs would have to be made from the inside out not the best way but no choice
Not true
She is a World War Two veteran! RMS Queen Mary, Bravo Zulu ma'am!
So what is all of that doing to repair the physical damage that has been done to the ship from sitting in the water for decades?
Why not SS United States……?
Sadly only a shell. Queen Mary like the beautiful ss Rotterdam in the Netherlands had their original interiors intact.
@@Lasuvidaboy-jp4xe And Queen Mary's successor, the Queen Elizabeth 2 is also still around, with her interiors as well.
Honestly, I believe that Ship deserves more love than the queen Mary. Such a beautiful and integrate part of our proud history. Incredible Ship. Which holds the blue ribbon
@@Fernando5455Jr fr she’s just crumbling away….it’s disappointing that people don’t wanna put forth the effort of rebuilding her
@@Chromatic_Gacha Really is heartbreaking, it may be a shell, but it’s not past the point of no return. At least the double bottom and hull is still holding up and not letting water in.
We Lost Olympic, are Losing United States.
We can't risk this girl too, good on the staff onboard the Queen Mary!
Did I mention that Queen Mary is haunted
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize
The beautiful queen of the seas. I’ve been on this amazing ship. You’ll never see anything like her again. The ugly ships being built now have nothing on this beautiful ship.
Isn’t there a haunted room in this ship.
"PINGA-CON-LOTA"
Pinacolata with TEQUILA
🤭
i swear this ship is haunted
Sailing a haunted ship what can go wrong
Tobias is Queen Mary
Huhhhhh
Is like the queen Mary hunted?
Then maybe one day in the future they might set it off traveling
The only problem with that is that they would have to put all new engines and certain other stuff into her and also put new funnels on. And probably new propellers too, among the whole bunch of other stuff she would need.
Ship is Hunted ghost
Great!
Now put electric engines in it and have it do transatlantic crossings
We saved the Queen Mary so we can save the SS United States
In who's pocket are all the money flowing?
So much of that money has been ploughed back in to the ship in a massive ongoing restoration, the difference is already spectacular compared to a few years ago, well done to the new owners and management team
The closest thing we will ever get to Titanic.
Hwo the ship literally is from Cunard and is 3 funnels
Awesome
Uh oh, Commodore went off the rails with 1000 years!
With little stress, good maintenance and the will, why not?
@@ydne without getting to technical this ship sits in the water and is supplied electric energy from dry land and that creates a problem of the electrical flow it eats steel very fast. There is a Cathodic Anode system used for ships in this position. The ship is the carhode and the either a chunk of Zinc or Magnesium, the cathode is protected while the anode is being eaten by the saltwater. It's called an ICCP system on a ship in case you want to learn more. Scientist's believe the Titanic will look like a rust pile by 2050 the superstructure is going to fail and the whole thing will collapse. Our mothballed military ships have this cathode/anode system and it costs between $50-$80 billion dollars annually. Fun fact: 5 metric tons (55,200 lbs) corrodes from ships globally every second (86,400 seconds x 55,200lbs = 4,769,280,000lbs) every day.
When will The S. S. United States get her's and shes American Made ?? The fastest Liner ever.
Heck if I know I’ve never been in Philly
If you really wanna bring her back hire some stokers and get to shoveling coal in those boilers
It’s the ultimate white elephant.
Like you
If u can’t say anything constructive then just say nothing
And yet, the SS United States is continuing to deteriorate as the years go by. 😢
Save the SS United States aswell!!!
The ship should be in the u.k. period!
But if the RMS Queen Mary was in the United kingdom. It probably wouldn't last as good. Because of the climate conditions that are different. The UK gets a lot of rain and wet conditions and heat and cold that would help to cause rust and wood damage a lot faster and causing the steel to expand and contact. Southern California has stable climate conditions with temperatur and not very much rain all of the time like in the United Kingdom.
Shouldn’t have junked it in the UK. Was sold to the City of Long Beach.
It should be but the UK wanted to scrap her.
Kudos to Long Beach for saving her.
If it were in the UK today, it would be in the form of twenty million paperclips.
she will sink like the titanic
NO SHE HAS NOT SANK
Nope no thankyou
don't forget. made in England
Ahem the UK
Actually, made in Clydebank, Scotland.
@@artsygala uk ireland and scotland is all the same island. i class it all as the UK but yes Clydebank
lets get that ship sail worthy again and move it to Florida, they could park it in Orlando FL they got plenty of room there.
The weather conditions there would cause it to be weathered more. The climate in California makes it last longer
Florida is too humid, it destroyed her younger sister in a matter of months.
It's resting on a bed of gravel, has no working engines for propulsion and is sequestered inside its own stone breakwater. That ship isn't going anywhere 🧭 😅
@@Belit01 The ship is not resting on gravel, as she rises and falls with the tide. She's still floating.
@@Belit01 the ship does indeed still float my friend
Sorry but the QM is in very poor shape
Not lately. She’s in decent shape for a 90 year old ship.
Nah, all things considered she’s in good shape. I saw her last month
It's in amazing shape as a matter of fact. Her hull was tested and has almost the same strength as when she was new. Some ppl.😒
You can watch full updates on the ship on the youtube channel Alex the Historian, he is a great guy. The city paid for a full hull inspection and the thickness of the steel is in excellent shape. The only real issue is the swimming pool in the center of the ship which has fallen apart so that area is closed off and will need major repairs, I was thinking that maybe while in military service in WW2 they might have loaded the pool with cargo or people and the weight of that caused damage but that is just my theory LOL. I assume they will repair it some day but it won't be cheap.
That’s not true, a lot of work has been done and a-lot more is now about to be undertaken
So, if Queen Mary was never built, the RMS Olympic would have been a museum, if Olympic was still scrapped how ever, the other liner that would have been built, is the MV Oceanic 3, the Oceanic would be where Queen Mary is now if Queen Mary was never built
The chances of things playing out like that would be slim.
@@sirboomsalot4902 yup, but this actually almost happened, the people who owned Olympic, tried to save her but it didn't work and she was scrapped, and if the great depression never happened then the RMMV Oceanic would have been built
Cunard-White Star would have still needed another large 5-day liner to operate a weekly transatlantic express service. Had Oceanic been built that would have been Queen Mary’s running mate and Queen Elizabeth would not have been built. Olympic would still have been scrapped as it was completely outmoded like Mauretania, Berengaria, Majestic etc. 😄
@@Lasuvidaboy-jp4xe it's a shame she was scrapped though 😔 RIP Old Reliable
