Queen Mary has always turned a profit. It’s the greed that led to disrepair. Glad to see she’s starting to be taken care of once again. She possesses the same “romance” that Catalina Island has for native residents of Southern California. Something special.

This is why for-profit organizations can’t run historic ships. Every penny of what you make has to go back into the ship; they are simultaneously the least profitable and the most expensive museums.

It was the _government_ that shut her down during Covid. That's how she went into disrepair. She was profitable before then. It's a for profit business that has restored her and forecasting to be turning a profit with her again.

I am DEEPLY skeptical that all the issues this old ship has have been dealt with.
Unless they provide receipts for hull repairs, I would presume they fixed the parts of the ship that are visible from the outside on the dock.
That doesn't mean the hull doesn't have problems.
This is a ship that was built in the mid to late 1930s. It's older than most of the other museum ships in the United States! Excepting the aircraft carrier museums which were worked hard for a quarter-century or better in their military careers, there's no ship that's worked harder during its career than an ocean liner or cargo ship.
Yes, I have reservations that the Queen Mary was repaired in any meaningful sense.

_RMS Queen Mary_ , 'Rolling Mary,' is quite the special ship. The first superliner White Star-Cunard Line built post-merger, so she took the place of _Oceanic III_ , sadly. She was famous during the Second World War as 'the Grey Ghost,' which the Germans put a bounty on, but they could never catch. Less famously, she was one of very few ships to have a dedicated synagogue, as well as a normal chapel. Some of her original whistles were given to _Queen Mary 2_, so when they called to each other, it was with much the same voice.
My favourite ocean liner is _SS United States_ , though, so seeing _Queen Mary_ restored gives me hope that William Francis Gibbs's overengineered speed demon might one day get the same.

There is a Cathodic Anode system used for ships in this position. The ship is the carhode and the either a chunk of Zinc or Magnesium, the cathode is protected while the anode is being eaten by the saltwater. It's called an ICCP system on a ship in case you want to learn more. Scientist's believe the Titanic will look like a rust pile by 2050 the superstructure is going to fail and the whole thing will collapse. Our mothballed military ships have this cathode/anode system and it costs between $50-$80 billion dollars annually. But if the RMS Queen Mary was in the United kingdom. It probably wouldn't last as good. Because of the climate conditions that are different. The UK gets a lot of rain and wet conditions and heat and cold that would help to cause rust and wood damage a lot faster and causing the steel to expand and contact. Southern California has stable climate conditions with temperatur and not very much rain all of the time like in the United Kingdom.

You can watch full updates on the ship on the youtube channel Alex the Historian, he is a great guy. The city paid for a full hull inspection and the thickness of the steel is in excellent shape. The only real issue is the swimming pool in the center of the ship which has fallen apart so that area is closed off and will need major repairs, I was thinking that maybe while in military service in WW2 they might have loaded the pool with cargo or people and the weight of that caused damage but that is just my theory LOL. I assume they will repair it some day but it won't be cheap.

So, if Queen Mary was never built, the RMS Olympic would have been a museum, if Olympic was still scrapped how ever, the other liner that would have been built, is the MV Oceanic 3, the Oceanic would be where Queen Mary is now if Queen Mary was never built

Cunard-White Star would have still needed another large 5-day liner to operate a weekly transatlantic express service. Had Oceanic been built that would have been Queen Mary’s running mate and Queen Elizabeth would not have been built. Olympic would still have been scrapped as it was completely outmoded like Mauretania, Berengaria, Majestic etc. 😄
