One of the best collabs ever. @simply_railway is measuring seat pitch and checking the water tap in the bathroom while @RM_Transit is telling us exactly why this train, its route and the station design along its journey is or is not exactly right to serve the population. Meanwhile @Downie_Live is telling the world why travelling on this train is a fantastic experience.

For ten years I took the GO train from my city into downtown Toronto
I loved every single part of the commute cause it took only 45 mins to get home and if I was driving it would be almost double the time. Washrooms are ALWAYS clean. Here’s a fun fact: nearly all GO regular commuters sit in the same seat every day 😊

Lots of places in North America need regional train service and ones that have it need better frequency (from those that run only on rush hours in peak direction to those that have decent service and could use more trains).

I like your channel because I like to seeing how other rail operators compare against the pathetic rail services here in the U.S. I like Downie's channel because of some of the epic journeys he brings. His energy and enthusiasm seem boundless. And now that you introduced me to RM's channel, I'll be clicking on him as well. Perhaps you should consider voice narration to your content. I'm sure we will be able interpret your accent just fine. This one was fun to watch. Thanks.

I hope I get a chance to do so soon, especially to experience GO Transit, as well as the other kinds of trains in the region! GO Transit has come a long way! If you'd visited at the turn of the century, you would have found much lower frequencies, and a Union Station in need of modernisation. Electrification will make things better still, though it won't fix the problem that most of the stations are in car parks rather than town centres.

    • @serbansaredwood
      @serbansaredwood Год назад

A lot of the stations are planning to have their surrounding lands developed into TOD. My station; Oakville GO will have its entire parking lot/industrial surroundings developed into a neighbourhood called Midtown Oakville along with a BRT Line.

Go Transit makes getting around in Toronto much more bareable vs the commute. I don't anymore, but used to have to get a few times a year to downtown Toronto from London. I'd park in Aldershot and take the GO train.
Nothing quite as satisfying as watching the cars all slowly moving along the Gardiner heading into Toronto. I also avoided the bulk of rush hour on my way home as well.
It is definitely a great service for Toronto.

the old cab car slander 😭
Me personally, the CEM (the new crash-resistant cars) look fine. Better than Hyundai/Rotem cab cars, but they don't beat the classic flat nose of the old cars, even though they are more aerodynamic. There's just something about the old cab cars that's nostalgic. My only complaint with the CEMs is the horn. Alstom only lets railroads use one type of horn, the K5CA. The K5CA sounds terrible, and they won't let you change it, not even in-house. Great video Thibault! Love your new intro. Hope you come down to Dallas again for the debut of the Silver Line commuter train!

GO Transit did not start Lakeshore services, they had been operated by CN for ages. (CP also has commuter serviecs in RDCs to Peterborough and Niagara Falls (ex TH&B services). But CN wanted oyt and refused to invest as ridership was going down. The experiment was a about a government taking over and see if ridership could be built back up with modernised equipment.
Toronto Stouffille and Toronto Barrie remained with CN until transfered to VIA's in 1978 and killed during the multiple rounds of VIA cuts in 1980s. Go Transit later started those services as "new". (different station at Barrie built).
The Bi-Levels were created by Hawker Siddeley in 1970s which was purchased by UTDC (govt owned) then sold to Lavalin, then sold back to Government then Sold to Bombardier in 1992 and then sold to Alstom recently. (The thunder bay plant is from Canadian Car and Foundry which went to UTDC and production of bi-levels moved there).
So if you are to use an old name, use Hawker Siddeley to refer to the creator of the bi levels.
The new cab is due to some dude train driver who texted to his girlfriend in Los Angeles , didn't see the red signal and had head on collision with a freight train. FRA required modifications for crash energy management to save the driver and front passengers. (but Metrolink then purchased new cars from Hyunday, but Bombardier still created the new cabs for Metrolinx and for other potential sales. The bi-Levels are grand-fathered light designs from before FRA required heavy steel trains in the 80s.
Metrolink still has bi-levels but they no longer at end of train, those are all Hyunday cars made of heavy steel to meet FRA standards new new models to USA). Metrolink didn't modify its bi-level cab cars.
Also: the "Bombardier" brand was not part of sale to Alstom so cannot be used by Alstom anymore. The highly endebted Bombardier which only ahas 2 business jets left as assets has retained all rights to the brand.

You know, for a second, I kinda expected that Reece and Downie would talk entirely through text at the bottom of the screen and just stand there smiling like an RPG

GO Transit is a bit of a failure with people not using it for all sorts of trips and very few places to walk to in suburban places. Not Just Bikes made a whole video on this

It’s going to get a lot better! And I wouldn’t say it’s quite that bad today. There are a lot of stations in old town that are quite walkable. Like Hamilton, Kitchener , Port Credit, Markham etc. And the trains are great for getting to places like Niagara!

      People used it heavily prepandemic
Trust me, we take the GO to the Ex, Baseball games and business people take in lieu of head ache commute during weekdays

Some stops are destinations, but they definitely could improve it going forward. I've used the GO to get to Niagara, Guelph & Unionville for example, and plan to use it to get to Hamilton this spring.
