Well, thank you so much for your kind, kind review, Olly! I’m just glad that you found this book to be worth your while. “User” was curiously the easiest story for me to write, yet seems to be the hardest for people to digest. I’m sure there’s a lesson in there.
In USA sloth rhymes with cloth and I notice maybe English accented folks seem to say it as though it rhymes with oath… like in British speak ‘the sloth took an oath of silence’ would sound cooler, funnier. Neither here nor there but love your reviews Ollie and want to get hold of this book for the two stories that are your favorites at least also the one with the respectable retired couple who actually are up to no good, to say the least.
Off topic; I am a devout Lovecraftian, I would love it if you would do a video recommending some books that lean to the Lovecraftian side of things. That style is just hard to beat. Thanks for what you do!
The most disturbing book I've ever read was "The Painted Bird" as all of it is true and disgusting for the gypsy child who lived in Poland during WWII and having both Nazis and Russians being disgusting around him and towards him. The idea of all these horrible things along with the child's view of the world was enough to stop my breath worse than a shot of 200 proof Mexican moonshine or a hornet stinging the front of my throat three times while I was riding my bike. His first love and what happened to her was absolutely miserable. This book comes in at #25 of my favorite books. 25) "The Painted Bird" by Jerzy Kosiński
I had to put this book down for a few days after the 3rd story User it kept me up the night I read it I could not get it out of my mind. I read a lot of disturbing books but that story got to me.
Finished it a couple of days ago and it was such a great collection of stories. Chatty Chumps is the one that stood out to me the most. Sooo frightening and disturbing and yet so engrossing and intriguing 😣
I don't wish to poke holes in your review... just kidding... I started the book today, I have just read the first two stories so far, it is seriously disturbing next is User the one you highlight...
Great review -- I will add the book to my endless TBR list. I'm forcing my way through House of Leaves right now, so I'm guessing I won't be ready for any new books until 2024 at the earliest. 😳
Great review! Picked it up for 90p on kindle (put in perspective, The Beano comic is £2.99 these days!) Hope this is a success for Juan; his channel and content is very good (and disturbing!) All the best to the community.
Right, off to buy this one! Sounds perfect for me. I just finished Dear Laura, which was very good; maybe a little settling (is that the opposite of unsettling?!) for my taste but that's just a personal preference.
Thank you, Olly. Sounds like a great recommendation. I LOVE having the daylights scared out of me!! I'd have never heard of this book had you never made this video, so thanks again! Another great video, buddy!! 🤩🤩🤩
I didn’t even get into viewing the review when I got the heebie jeebies. Yikes! Considering reading it just to find out why you chose User as your favorite. 🤔
Hi Olly. I’ve been watching/commenting for a a while. I just wanted to let you know that my crime novel (I’m ex police) is free for Halloween. I will email the kindle link to you if that’s ok?
Have made major investments on Amazon lately loading up my Kindle with titles from this channel. Poised between gratitude and ... something else? But currently stuck in a mediocre horror called Kill Creek, which is sort of similar to Hell House in some ways, but to my mind not as good. Sigh. For reasons that feel compulsive I am so far unable to drop the damn thing, so I slog forth. I will choose better next time! Meanwhile, I can only be glad that others are in a better place.
@@CriminOllyBlog well, I'm not done with it yet, but so far, at 80%, I would call it a contemporary retell of Hell House. For what that's worth in your decision making process.

My pleasure! Really enjoyed it all, even when it was doing my head in 😅
🙌
Congrats, Juan!
@@troytradup Thank you!!! 🤗
Really interesting that the easiest for you to write is the hardest for others to read. As a writer, I find that makes sense to me!
Oh my god, my namesake wrote one fucked up book!
He did! You might want to change your name in case people think you wrote it.
@@CriminOllyBlog Sigh
Man, was your channel ever a find! Your takes are amazing. Buying this book right now.
That’s very kind of you to say!
Couldn’t agree more. My book list has grown substantially in the couple of weeks since I found him.

Thank you! The book has actually just been picked up by a publisher so you should find it easy to come by
An absolutely fantastic review, Olly. I couldnt agree more. Such powerful and disturbing stories but yet somehow personal in tone....bravo!
Yes! A wonderful book. Just as good as I expected it would be
I like to mix horror with my regular reads. Currently I am reading Joyce Carol Oates "We Were The Mulvaneys"! Excellent read.
I’ve heard that’s a good one!

That’s an absolute bargain

Yeah that one really was something! If this helps I don't think there is a more disturbing story in the book
I enjoyed this collection. "User" was messed up! I had to stop midway and take a breath before finishing it. Fabulous story! Good review, Olly!
Thanks Priscilla!
I haven’t finished the collection yet, but I have been “enjoying” the first three stories. User was a trip.
User really is something else

Yeah Chatty Chumps was really excellent. You needed to keep reading but you didn't want to know what happened next!
You’ve convinced me to try this and it’s also on kindle unlimited which is an added bonus.
Fantastic! Don't say I didn't warn you though!

I wasn't aware of that - let me check with the author
Hi I’ve checked for you and the Kindle version will be available again soon. It’s being upgraded to match the content of the hardcover

How many hours and pages per day do you read, Ollie?
During the week probably 1-2 hours a day, at the weekend 4-5. I read between 5 and 6000 pages a month, so about 175-200 per day
Wow. I'm trying to push past 60 pages per day, got any tips?
The thumbnail! I thought it was the Debbie Harry / HR Giger album cover design mashup 😂
Ha ha I had fun making it!
Read "Hell of a Woman" by Jim Thompson based on your recommendation. So good.
Folks who like all audiobooks should give it a try as well.
