  • Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of the more successful Mercs in terms of sales. For the last two years of production, the first generation GLC was the best-selling Mercedes. Success can be a blessing, but also a curse, so designers had to tread carefully implementing changes so as not to scare away the customers. And that's probably why, at first glance, you might think that the second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC is just another facelift. But that's just an illusion. What is new on the X254 GLC?

    The car is pretty and can serve a wide remit more an high end product than a true car. Still, Mercs must be comfort oriented, the only point is the old GLK still has a strong identity with no true heirs, shame.
    And bravo 👏 Marek as usual

    On the outside, I prefer the previous model, but the interiors on the new C and GLC are better looking an seem better built.
    I'm in the market for a GLC / X3 / XC60 and so far: Volvo offers best discounts and low waiting times (actually, they have a lot of cars in stock), GLC is a bit expensive and I'm not convinced on the exterior looks, and the X3 is starting to show it's age especially on the interior. Also taking into consideration on waiting for the new X3... hopefully delivery times will be shorter and maybe the prices will go down, or at least some consistent discounts will be applied, as premium dealers usually do.

    Good review. Thank you. Did you say it is diesel and hybrid? Why were hybrids ever petrol??

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  Год назад

      It's all about the money. Originally the hybrid (as in the OG Prius) was a way to make a cheap(ish) petrol car even cheaper to run. By US standards Prius fuel economy must have seemed like witchcraft, but in Europe an equivalent diesel engine would get even better fuel economy, and it was often cheaper, than the Prius (cost of new technology, batteries, etc.).
      FFWD 10 years, and hybrid technology got affordable and reliable enough to implement it in other configurations. It was still too expensive to go mainstream (don't laugh, this is one of my first reviews, and it looks like it was filmed on a Nokia feature phone through a stocking ruclips.net/video/iJOBie9Z2Uk/видео.html), but there were attempts to combine diesel efficiency and quieter driving experience around town. FFWD another 10 years, and diesel plug-in hybrids could be the best of both worlds, especially in scenarios, where you really drive very short distances around town, and then hit the motorway for many miles.

    I will be in the market for car later this year / early next year. GLC is a big contender, together with CX-60 AWD Diesel. It will be a tough choice, since Merc with airmatic and digital lights can get really expensive, however Mazda (have only driven the PHEV) is nowhere near in comfort and a bit harsh. I am quite curious whether Mazda can solve these early issues with the car in later production series…
    I considered X3 as well, but cannot justify to myself buying a “seven years old” new car.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  Год назад +1

      X3 is the best driving car of the lot, but I see how paying full price for a car just before next gen appears may be difficult to swallow. What if you get a good deal on it? I'm afraid the new one will be just more about reducing emissions, and less about driving. Though BMW desperately needs a better range on its X3 PHEV.

    • @danieltham1090
      @danieltham1090 Год назад

      Yes, X3 might be an option if I can get 20d for the Mazda price or 30d for the price closer to price of a new 20d. I will be looking for those test or show cars to get a new deal, however, currently there are none here in CZE.
      I won’t be scared from next gen X3 being worse driving car. They managed to do the new X1 right, so I don’t think theyl’ll ruin the bigger one… Only iDrive 8 is not my cup of tea, I do prefer the older version.
      Do you know when is the new X3 out? 2024 already?

I tried the Volvo, but had a hard time accepting the gas engine reving and making noise when accelerating. After having driven high torque diesels and electrics its hard to go back to screaming gas cars..

    This is why you're the car reviewer and not me - I wouldn't be able to think of anything to say about the GLC. My biggest problem with both the last generation and the new generation is that for me they seem to be devoid of any sort of personality. Still, as you pointed out, they sell well so people must like them.
    Is the interior trim in the review car standard, Marek? Are there options that aren't slabs of shiny plastic because I think all the fingerprints would drive me mad!

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  Год назад

      This is why I drink :)
      Nothing is standard on this car. You'd have to run the configurator. Depending on the trim line there are different interior finish options to choose from. I'm not sure if there's anything non-glossy other than faux wood. But this carbonish finish is OK. Fingerprints don't show much.

    Yes -- the buttonless bandwagon trend is stupid. o one can dispute that having to navigate a software menu to do simple tasks is safer than a switch you can locate and turn on, without looking, by memory. The fact the common sense has been lost around this is totally mind boggling. And please don't give me the voice commands solution. The voice commands are slow and half baked, at best.
