    Me and @FishShopMatt put a huge amount of effort into this one and it's my first proper co2 injected tank. We've had it planned for months! We went crazy on the planting and over stocked the number of betta fish. The idea of this is that it gives each fish places to hide if they want but there are too many Betta fish for them to get their own territories. Having territories is what creates aggression. Kind of the same thing with a Cichlid tank. Any aggression is dispersed between all of them. The tank is now a week old and I've seen very little aggression between any fish but will obviously keep monitoring as we go.

      1 tip, keep a good eye on your solenoid valve. they can get stuck which make it stop or keep running when you do not want this. when this happens, all you can do is open en clean it.

      Love the new studio. Love the technicolour over planted betta tank.
      You should definitely stick a male in with the harem, Maybe not Hellboy though. A young 'alien' metallic betta would be better. A younger fish would grow up and get used to the environment and tankmates before breeding behaviour begins. Also an Alien better would look awesome and produce metallic babies!

    • @Heavenlyartdolls
      @Heavenlyartdolls Год назад

      I think one male Betta would be OK but if they breed and he makes a bubble nest, he may kill the other females because you’re very protective over their babies, and only the male stays with the babies

    I kept x15 in a sorority in a 40g tank for a year - only had to take out one for safety, and it was maybe 3 months in. She went from fine to shredded overnight though, and I'm extremely grateful I saw her limping along in the morning and got her out safely. I had a 20+ school of neon tetras for dithers, corys along the bottom, and a million shrimp. It was a really pretty and active tank, excessively planted so that there were plenty of safe spaces to run away to. I did start with them all very small. Maybe half the age of the ones you put in. Ohhhh and I did end up with two that were not actually female...largely because they were all so small, and my main selection criteria was that they needed to be similar sized, which ended up having them too small to be sexed easily. In retrospect, I wished I'd also kept a look-out for variety in color and finstyle as well. I ended up with mostly white bodies+red fins, which were beautiful butttttttt very similar to each other :)
    I can't remember his name but there's a youtuber who goes into a lot of the really interesting science behind fish set ups, and he keeps multiple males and females in his massive betta tank. He was well aware that aggression ramped up during feeding and breeding, and kept a very careful eye on them. Any time the girls start looking plump and maybe broody, he takes them + whichever male they've been kinda flirting with out and keeps them in a holding tank until they've bred or changed their minds. He also puts the female back into the main tank once she's laid, as it's dads job then.
    I think you could get away with a male, as your tank is big and there is enough activity going on to spread out the aggression...but I know you love baby fish, and I think it might stress dad out to be trying to protect his babies from all the hungry neighbors. And it might be a stupid amount of work for him to be diving down so deep to rescue his babies and keep them at the surface. Not too mention it might be too deep of a tank for betta fry to have successful hiding places and also enough surface access. This last bit is pure theory though, and I'll be very interested to see if you give it a go.

    • @shayxie8318
      @shayxie8318 Год назад +34

      do keep an eye on those stress stripes though...my babies took a bit to get used to my giant face watching them constantly and it took a couple weeks for my magical appearance to stop being stressful for them...but eventually they dgaf and thankfully stopped showing stress stripes at me.

The tank is gorgeous 🤩 I'd be interested to see how the females are doing in s few weeks. I had planted sorority tank with 12 females for years. A bit fiddley at first but once they established themselves they did great.

    Hi, nic from Oz here, enjoying ur videos... I had 8 female bettas with 2 males in a 4ft tank, planted not quite as fully as ur sorority tank... twas a community amazon based set up, the males established territories & clashed infrequently & half heartedly... the girls roamed the tank, no trouble 2 anyone else.
    I separated them 4 selective & successful breeding, coz in community tank bubble nest was being broken & robbed.

    I used to have a sorority, and people would lose their minds over it. Apparently since THEY didn't manage to make it work, mine was destined for failure. I just didn't give any unique/single decorations for them to get territorial over, and kept my stocking numbers relatively high, much like many people do with cichlids. Then they didn't have a pecking order, and nobody was targeted. Worked fine for years, until I moved, and sold them all. :)

Ive heard that the actual have better success rates than all female betta sororities. My fish are very happy and do well living together. They have actually grown bonded to each other and I have even caught my two most dominant girls cuddling together. I love bettas so much! I cant go into ANY fish store without leaving with at least one betta that has been there the longest. It makes me so happy to see you doing a sorority. It's sad that the common misconception is that they are solitary, but my girls actually are so happy to have each other. They really are social, theyre just very socially advanced, so naturally, like humans, they have different personalities and occasional spats.

    hahaha we also call it seasoning the tank here :P
    on the subject adding a male to several females, im currently running a tank with 3 halfmoon females and 1 longtail male. The male is a complete pacifist, not nipping or anything in regards of aggressive behavior and it works awesome. Kept the male for a while in a seperate tank because of the horror stories about betta males but decided to go and do the experiment. My male was actually grumier when he was alone in the tank, so added a few zebra tetra's and my pair of bristle pleco's. that worked out great!

    Love the tank! It’s an inspiration for my next project! I breed bettas and wanted to let you know to be careful with your females, they seem to have stress stripes (horizontal stripes) if they stay stressed too long, they may end up with dropsy. The tank looks great though! Love it!

    Get an in-line diffuser if you can use one with that system, you’ll have all the benefits of CO2 without the bubbles. Just swapped mine from an in-tank to in-line and it’s miles better. I can enjoy looking at my tank again now!

    That is awesome, I have seen several people do 4-5 males in a tank. Keys to success seem to be minimum 3 or 4 females per male, and lots of areas high in the water column that are visually separated. So I would think once your stems get tall 2-4 boys would get along just fine in there as long as you don't move stuff around on them to much.

      Neons. I think there are too many of them, they dominate the tank. There's two ways to run your tank, 1) the fish are primarily decorations, like wallpaper or 2) the fish are pets, like animals in a zoo. The latter way is surprisingly more enjoyable once you try it. You'll watch an empty space and suddenly oe of them will comne into view doing something interesting.

    If you don’t like the bubbly look, you can get an inline CO2 reactor to pre-dissolve the bubbles before they reach the tank. It’s confusing because the word “reactor” usually just describes a container that you hook up to your canister filter output line that mixes water with CO2. It will fully dissolve the bubbles and you won’t see them anymore!

    Tried sororities over the past couple of years in different ways, lots of cover, not so much cover alot of fish, less fish. In the end it will always fail. Some will start to get sick from the constant stress, illness will spread, fins will get damaged, no matter what. Its not worth the short time and its just not good for the fish. Its not the same as a cichlid tank, where overstocking works. Bettas are just differently build.
