When I read the books I tried so hard to pay attention to Cho Chang and see if she got any action and I wasted my time because they mentioned her like one time in chamber of secrets
while I do feel bad for Cho losing Cedric, but she was not written well and she was not great in the 5th book, and she didn't get help dealing with her loss
I was thinking that, with JKR‘s habit of foreshadowing a character’s personality/development or their physical appearance through their name (Albus, Minerva, Remus Lupin, Sirius, Severus etc.) Cho Chang could be a version of the chinese word chóuchàng meaning melancholy, but I agree that she was not given a real character arc.

They actually spoke again after they broke up in the books. She actually volunteered to show harry the Ravenclaw tower when he was looking for the horcrux but Ginny stepped in and told her that's not gonna happen and Luna is going to show him. It was funny scene to me in the books because Cho did still like Harry after they broke up and Ginny was super jealous. Also Ginny technically broke up with Harry during that time. 😆 Cho is just a better character in the books IMO and not really a bad character in general specially when she is 1st shown playing against Harry as seeker for Ravenclaw in the Prisoner of Azkaban. I feel more sorry for the movie Ginny because she is just a empty shell to the book one.
I liked Cho, and Katie did an awesome portayal of her in the films. I wish she had a bigger role in the final films (and kinda wished she ended up with Harry. Well, that was me when I was 12 to 15 years old watching the movies at the cinema). I was also quite surprised how a lot of people seemed to dislike her and only thinking about her as a cry baby, I mean, where's the empathy? Are we making fun of a girl who's suffering from the death of her late boyfriend? It kinda pisses me off how hard it can be to understand how difficult it is to process the loss of a loved one. I loved Order of the Phoenix until the last half of the film, Cho is given the cold shoulder for telling about the DA, understandably, however she couldn't help it because she was forced to drink the truth serum. Even after it was revealed that she was forced the truth serum, she was just gone for the rest of the film, nobody even approaching her to say ''You couldn't help it, sorry I treated you harshly'' erghhh... At least I'm glad she had appearance in the final film, participating in the battle and survived the war, it was a huge relief. Still, I wish they did her story and role better.

THIS!! Absolutely ALL OF THIS. I just began reading the harry potter books and I had to put the book down the moment I saw the name Cho Chang. Cho Chang, Ling Long, same energy :'D. I do like that she's sporty and stuff, but she absolutely deserved a bigger role if she was going to be the ONLY asian character. Otherwise, her inclusion feels like a diversity pick. But then again, these books were published ages ago, so I commend her for even being included at the time.

They are pretty COOL qwq I would love to see a reboot of the movies , but improving the characther of cho chang, They can start by changing the name :0
...Maybe the franchise is starting to show it's age and cracks. 20 years ago this was all cool and great. People wouldn't think this way at the time, they would just consume the content and go about their day. Obviously this won't fly today, but the series was written in a time when none of this was relevant as it is today.
I think Americans forget Harry Potter is a British story about British kids set in the 1990s. It wasn't written as an international wish fulfilment exercise.
Character development complaints about Cho as a minor character don't seem to apply to Lavender or Victor as the minor character romances of Ron & Hermione though do they? I have a feeling they wouldn't apply to Cho either if she was white - complaints seems to have begun with middle class Asian American girls overly invested in Harry Potter fandom who think JKR has an obligation to "represent" them via Cho. The unconvincing thing about the whole series is that JKR keeps introducing student characters throughout books 2-5 as if they are unknown, and Harry/Ron/Hermione have no relationship with them. There are, as far as I can tell, only about 40 kids per year in Hogwarts - in reality, they would know their whole house in year 1 and the whole school in year 2 - this is a plot device, but makes the books rather unconvincing.

I’m not sure who think Cho a last name because I’ve never met a single person who’s last name is Cho, and several with Cho as one or the characters in their first name. I don’t think the fist criticism is valid at all. Cho Chang, though some what too stereotypical, is a complete valid Chinese name. Source: am Taiwanese.
she is my second fav and I thought she should of ended up with Harry. The problem with Cho and Harry is timing and the events that got in the way of them getting together
If the series got rebooted for a Netflix series they should get Steven Moffat the former show runner of doctor who to right cho’s arc and give her character development
I think it's bad writing that any character should get special attention or consideration just because they are non white or Asian. I think every character is perfect for the story
Cho was a strange character. JK got caught up in identity politics but really didnt know much about Asian people. Realtalk: having an important Asian character is fine but Harry's first love interest would have been better as a white girl. The reality is that a lot of Asian girls arent into white guys and a lot of white guys arent into Asian girls. The readership of HP was probably around 90% white especially when the books were published. A white girl would have been a lot more compelling in that context. An Asian friend in Griffendor or another house would have been much better
i dont think she would be just a love interest if harry actually picked up the courage and talked to her. his thing (that was going on for 2 books i think?) was just one sided and from a distance. that was the point. he never actually got to know her. we only knew cho as an acquintance. now ofc the author could make it so that harry got to know her more, but the point was that this character, harry, was always.. platonic, quiet and shy around her. so no i dont blame jk for having no depth in the character. (also even from distance, id say she is an emotionally complex character compared to other side characters like.. idk cedric. molly. even more than george and fred, because they are the fun twins and nothing else till the war scenes. thats the nature of the book. people will be assigned to roles and reduced. people who expected more from her, solely because shes the only asian character, are making an unfair comparison imo) Also i agree with the other parts on how she isnt exactly the typical asian stereotype. she was popular, outgoing but reserved at the same time. rather confident and most importantly a sports person. also, a very important person from ravenclaw. there arent many as prominent as her from this house aside from luna. id think thats a good representation. mind you this was in 1999 or smt where we were all in our little cultural bubble as internet wasnt that common esp internationally, people were not as educated and i see this as a good attempt in representation tbh. diversity is a topic that we only recently started to strongly and widely discuss (and hold ppl accountable for, address the issues properly etc) so no, i dont see it as a bad intention. definitely needed more research and more asian characters though. and the name mistake is unacceptable imo. (that being said i live in a less diverse country so maybe this is not a fair judgement? but we dont have many people from other cultures and it doesnt seem weird to me that shes not very 'correct' as a character from 90s) however the film. the films were something else lol they knew what they were doing. they reduced her to this sobbing shell.
I'm white, so that's where my perspective comes from about this, and I'm American. I feel like what J.K. did with Cho could have happened to any of us on the white side and it should be called out, but us on the white side should really take a moment to learn what's wrong here so we don't make the same mistakes and realize we may have been doing this already. I was sad when Harry started liking Cho in the books because I wanted him to like Hermione. I liked Cho though. I immediately pictured her as this skilled sporty girl, who, being one year older, must be so mature. When she got paired off with Cedric in the fourth book, I was so here for it, just because I shipped Harry/Hermione, but then I also ended up liking them.
To me, Cho was the mature older girl and Harry was nice, but more of a boy, and Cedric, being a senior, was more of a man. Gosh, I was so young. I was born in 93 and started the books in third grade. He was going to start thinking of adult life and working hard at that, so by the time he graduated he would be pretty settled and he and Cho could truly start an adult romance. They would have his apartment to go to (not for sex, but like for a conversation that parents were not watching, and I didn't picture unmarried couples living together at the time) and his money to rely on as Cho started her career or, because I saw this in society more frequently growing up, felt like being a stay-at-home mom or stay-at-home wife because his career was booming and needed their dedication.
I pictured Cho and Cedric as being seen as quiet to outsiders, when they were together, but in a regal way. They are a true kind and queen in an equal way. Yes, because of the times, I saw Cedric as being more likely to have a career they would dedicate themselves too, but they both still matter and are free. I pictured them a little this way before they were together too. They strike me as being the moral compasses of their friend groups, so when they do speak or are asked to, it's to guide people and even flat out tell them what to do, but seemingly without force or anger but in a way that makes you listen.
I think Cho and Cedric felt bothered by their friends. They want to see the best in people, but when they get together there is some relief in finding someone truly great to rely on, and I think this would be a major part of the love they felt for each other. As crazy as they knew it would sound, they would discuss marriage and being early adults, Cedric getting started, Cho waiting, but also still trying hard at school and not just deciding she had a man to take care of everything. They would just both be well aware if Cedric started a career with a good salary that cut into her time they would just go with that and Cho would work around it. Again, it was how I saw the world. Basically, everyone in Cedric's life would know Cho was part of the deal, the queen to his king. As for what J.K. did with Cho, I didn't see the racism right away, but I was upset by what I saw her do with the character. It made sense to me that Cho was slipping into depression just based on the fact having someone you love get killed would do that. Also, because of the times (but also kind of now) and films I saw, I always thought if you had a truly good husband who made you feel safe that you would be really depressed because I always heard about why I should protect myself against predatory boys and men and thought this meant a truly safe man was something to be very thankful for. I thought it was supposed to be a joke when Harry was upset over his date with Cho, because he was a boy who could not understand girls. To me, Cho may have rebounded with him, but she was torn over really loving Cedric and having all these plans with him, so it felt like cheating and then it hurts to start dating because it would be her admitting he was truly gone. She would also feel bad for seeing Harry really like her as a crush, but she was dealing with the end of a truly epic romance.
I don't think J.K. was trying to write Cho as submissive. There's the scene where she calls out Ron, the scene where she jokingly calls Harry a "kill-joy" or something, and she constantly gets angry about mentions of Hermione and thinks Harry is being a little player and she won't stand for it. I don't think she hates Hermione, just the idea that Harry would have multiple girls. I think Cho's mom was facing an inquiry at work in the fifth book and that probably pushed Cho over the edge so when one of her friends, as wrong as she was, was affected by Hermione's hex, Cho snapped. She might even have remembered that Harry seemed to be dating her too and might have wondered if Harry and Hermione conspired together to hurt the group and thought of Cho as less-trustworthy, when Cho would know her own merits. Maybe, she felt she could have been a part of being the moral compass and keeping the group in line, like she had with her friends, without tricking people. I feel like Cho sees it as wrong to go after them physically. Sometime in the summer, I think Cho's life would slow down, her mom would be fine, and Cho would be healing enough to tell her friend she was wrong to turn everyone in. I even think Cho would maybe have a moment of respect with Hermione if they came across each other. She might even have confided in her, which was why Hermione was so able to tell what was wrong with Cho.
I was pretty shocked when I saw Cho in the seventh book seem to be trying to get with Harry even though I assumed everyone knew Harry and Ginny were together. I was just like, "That's not Cho. She wouldn't do that." so I like to think she wasn't trying to get with Harry but Ginny was just paranoid and jealous. As for her name, any of us on the white side could have done that. If it were me, I would have Googled Chinese names or given her a name like "Rachel", but J.K. might have mistakenly taken a Korean surname, didn't have the resources I would, or didn't think to. She might not have realized what it mean to give her the name Cho Chang and might have even thought it would be more fun and could mean Cho was both Korean and Chinese. Most white people can only write prominent characters of color, not main ones, but Cho really did only exist for a white boy, like any white counterpart would have for Harry, but Hermione gets to have more moments, and Cho really does get written off as terrible. It is unfair to East Asian girls. They have so little representation.
When I was doing research for the Harry Potter animation, I made a bunch of notes of video essay topics I had opinions on. This was one of them 😈

Book 4, again she was sincerely sorry she couldn’t say yes to him and still visibly interested in him - supporting him at the start when most of the school didn’t. Book 5, definite clear chemistry. And when there is a conversation about ginny’s love life, he doesn’t care. No guy/girl would be uninterested in the status of the one they desire. Thus he does not desire Ginny at all. The movies don’t really do Cho justice though frankly change a lot of the books (“Did you put your name into the Goblet,” Dumbledore asked CALMLY) missing out a sizeable amount of plot in 3 and swapping characters like Cho, Dobby, Bagman, Lupin, etc out a lot. Cho Potter the whole way! That’s my head canon. Only alternative is Ginny is another Horcrux, has tricked Harry with a dark love potion and has some nefarious plot that will be defeated in a sequel. Hermione also deserved better than Ron. Harry deserved better than Ginny. Cho deserved better than being randomly cast aside by the author. It would have been like Ross and Rachel, Han and Leia, Alejandro and Eleanor, Mulan and Shang not ending up together by the story’s end in Friends, ROTJ, Zorro, Mulan respectively.
When I read the books I tried so hard to pay attention to Cho Chang and see if she got any action and I wasted my time because they mentioned her like one time in chamber of secrets
haha yeah she honestly didn't get that much of a part, but it was weird how much rowling actually gave her in book 5 for it to just fizzle away.
"Cho is the only asian" There was a girl named Su Li, but JK apparently forgot about her.
while I do feel bad for Cho losing Cedric, but she was not written well and she was not great in the 5th book, and she didn't get help dealing with her loss
I think Cho Chang from the books was really great. Hell, I could feel my stomach flip when Harry saw her as well. It was setup superbly as instant attraction/love at first sight that was mutual in book 3. Where it got messy, was the abrupt absence in book 6. And in the movies, not demonstrating the clear book rapport enough and changing the story in 5. Personally think she should have ended up as Cho Potter. Detest the Ginny ending. Unless Ginny used a love potion to trick Harry setting up a sequel. Also personally find Cho Chang was an outgoing, super attractive witch.
Cho is just a better character in the books IMO and not really a bad character in general specially when she is 1st shown playing against Harry as seeker for Ravenclaw in the Prisoner of Azkaban.

I think Cho Chang was really great. She was a fun, attractive and talented witch. Loyal to Harry till the end in book 7. Hell, I could feel my stomach flip when Harry saw her as well. And in the movies, not demonstrating the clear book rapport enough and changing the story in 5. Personally think she should have ended up as Cho Potter. In my view, the ONLY acceptable outcome given the buildup was Cho and Harry to end up together. They had the best chemistry, setup, mutually assured attraction and ultimately it would have interestingly made Harry appreciate how he got his girl (love at first sight) unlike Snape. I have a fanfic where Harry tells Cho what happened to Cedric in the thrid task.
ughh that should totally be canon haha
@@JTeaLeaf I know right, I took it off from Fanfiction.net because I have to redo it. It's going to take a while since I got a life.
name...???
Well in the movie she has a very cute Scottish accent I love that.

Finally someone says it!! 💕❤️
I have in Perú, very peruvians with chinese roots, and I SWEAR every of them have a distint personality and diferentes goals.
It wasn't written as an international wish fulfilment exercise.
it's not wish fulfillment, it's character development

@@robw7676just an opinion- lavender was silly and kinda annoying all pages in hbp while victor was there in only 1 book. Cho was there since poa continued to gof, ootp and deathly hallows. She easily could hv been a part of the main plot instead of just being the love interest. She's talented (quiditch n all), kind and overall an outgoing person. She doesn't makes fun of harry(like everyone else)in gof n views him as he is. She could hv got a character development like Luna n ginny.
Cho isn't bad she is good
She's my favourite character
This was an interest video :)
Cho Potter all the way
If they Ask me To Re - Write Hp I will Make cho's Character More intersting
Hold my f***ing butterbeer I got you with Different Circumstances
I'm literally only watching this video because I just bought a Lego set with a Cho Chang minifigure and I have no idea who she is but I don't wanna look like a poser.
She's essentially a nothing character, but had a big impact on Harry's life in books 4-5. Poorly written unfortunately, so I don't blame you😂
Behind the scene I saw one white lady trying to hold the actress playing cho chang from kissing Harry Potter too much. 👀
To be honest, the critique holds up better for the movies than the books 🤷♀️
haha I agree, but even in the books, her end is a bit lackluster. Going to upload part 2 on how to fix that soon! 🥰
I liked her from the books. Movie Cho Chang was a bit boring.
Cho is pretty asf
Bro people be crying over everything
Will cho name her daughter cedrica after cedric?
i dont think she would be just a love interest if harry actually picked up the courage and talked to her. his thing (that was going on for 2 books i think?) was just one sided and from a distance. that was the point. he never actually got to know her. we only knew cho as an acquintance. now ofc the author could make it so that harry got to know her more, but the point was that this character, harry, was always.. platonic, quiet and shy around her. so no i dont blame jk for having no depth in the character. (also even from distance, id say she is an emotionally complex character compared to other side characters like.. idk cedric. molly. even more than george and fred, because they are the fun twins and nothing else till the war scenes. thats the nature of the book. people will be assigned to roles and reduced. people who expected more from her, solely because shes the only asian character, are making an unfair comparison imo)
Also i agree with the other parts on how she isnt exactly the typical asian stereotype. she was popular, outgoing but reserved at the same time. rather confident and most importantly a sports person. also, a very important person from ravenclaw. there arent many as prominent as her from this house aside from luna. id think thats a good representation. mind you this was in 1999 or smt where we were all in our little cultural bubble as internet wasnt that common esp internationally, people were not as educated and i see this as a good attempt in representation tbh. diversity is a topic that we only recently started to strongly and widely discuss (and hold ppl accountable for, address the issues properly etc) so no, i dont see it as a bad intention. definitely needed more research and more asian characters though. and the name mistake is unacceptable imo. (that being said i live in a less diverse country so maybe this is not a fair judgement? but we dont have many people from other cultures and it doesnt seem weird to me that shes not very 'correct' as a character from 90s)
however the film. the films were something else lol they knew what they were doing. they reduced her to this sobbing shell.
