    All in
    100% i agree with these beats
    Work also on your technique, internal clock, feeling, groove, independence and rudiments to be very good drummer
    And love practicing 💖 Theres nothing better than playing 200 BPM for over 30 minutes 16th notes on double bass with your hands playing what you want 😂 Just kidding 😂 But if you can play 200 BPM for long periods like 4 minutes up to even 20 youre on the great way 😉

      Robson Lombardo there’s always another thing to work on. If you only know this stuff in the video you’d be a pretty poor metal drummer overall... but you have to start somewhere.

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom That's a bit of a harsh statement. Of course there is always something to work on but you can get pretty far if you master these techniques. I'm by no means an expert as right now I am working on the 16th note double bass. I still have a long ways to go, but there are way many more skills and fundamentals that I've established and now I see the point you are trying to make. But I would assume that if you can get these techniques down then you would already have to have pretty solid fundamentals.

      Evan Hubbard well sure. I’m just saying that this video, while a good overview, misses tons of important aspects of drumming. It’s not intended to be the only set of skills anyone should learn. Just a partial list of skills that are specific to metal and not jazz or funk or gospel or something else. That’s all I was saying.

    Hi Ryan,
    Love all the informative videos you've made. Would you ever think about maybe making a "stick selection guide" video? Or is it really just the "gotta try out each stick and how it feels in your hands" in your opinion? I currently use Vic Firth Extreme 5As as that is what Bill Bachman uses and recommended I use when I mentioned I was using a regular 5A for his Extreme Hands Makeover, but since I don't know how his hand size/dimensions compare to mine I don't know if you have any recommendations in terms of like "if X occurs when doing a free stroke, you should use a larger diameter stick than what you are using" etc.

      I have a few videos that compare sticks 'scientifically', just check around on my channel for them. But honestly the science doesn't mean anything compared to how you personally feel about them in your hand. I play metal with the Vater Pro Rock nylon. I like the Hardimon indoor for chopping out, and I like the way the Steve Gadd sticks feel but I hate the paint. There's no perfect stick for any given application that fits everyone's needs all the time.

    I'm going to get your double kick and thrash books for my son. Hudson publishing only has yours as an eBook, though (at least, it is the only option presented to me on my devices). How would one get a hard copy?
    It would be nice if my son can learn to be an understudy for the drummer in a band I'm about to join.

    where do you start if you’re a total beginner learning at home wanting be in the process of playing metal ???

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  2 года назад

      You start by learning basic beats and beginner skills like any drummer. There’s no specific Metal way to be a beginner. You have to learn the same stuff as any rock, jazz, or whatever other type of drummer. Grip, rudiments, hand technique, foot technique, reading, stick control… then when you can play a bit you think about how to specialize in the skills demonstrated here.

      Ryan Alexander Bloom hey Ryan did you ever struggle with the theory side of things?
      I’m more of a hands on type person so I understand more what I’m playing but only after can I put it together...

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  5 лет назад +2

      Golden grillson well I required extra help to understand figured bass, which I’ve now forgotten, and I’ve never really grasped jazz theory or modes too well. But if you’re talking about reading music and understanding subdivisions, tempo math, and being able to transcribe drum parts in notation that’s pretty easy. And I wouldn’t really call that theory. “Theory” doesn’t really start until you go above what’s required for basic “practice” though many a helicopter mom has complained that teaching a kid a paradiddle was too much “theory” for their “learning style” which always gets a facepalm out of me.

    2:15 gotta play punk drums with a single pedal that’s cheating

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  2 года назад

      2:15 is in the thrash section. Punk doesn’t start until 2:39 or so. I know how to play punk with one foot and I wouldn’t bother bringing a double pedal to a punk rock or hardcore setting.

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom the d beat is punk tho ? Listen to any punk song ever NOFX , Blink, Stiff little fingers they all do one bass drum snare followed by a heel toe double bass snare

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom  2 года назад

      @@JDoubleyou. Yeah I know how punk sounds. I didn't play the exact beat your'e getting at because this video isn't really about punk, its about metal, where almost everyone has access to 2 kick pedals. The punk beats that metal drummers adopt are those that differ significantly from the type of thrash beats they would already normally play. Sometimes, like in Slayer, you will hear a single footed double on the kick, but in modern metal it is pretty rare. Not because I, or other drummers, can't do it, but because it overlaps a lot with the thrash paradigm and we often choose to play it the thrash way so that it is clearer.
