Washington's flag is certainly good, but the redesign one from Bradley Lockhart is even better. That one NEEDS to be the state flag, along with "The North Star" flag for Minnesota. LOVE Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland (even though that one definitely doesn't need a redesign) & Nevada-the best one, IMO. Are you going to do NY?
I heard about the north star and Washington flags right after I posted the video, next time I'll correct it because those look much better than my redesigns. I will be doing more of this content, making 10 flags (and an honorable mention) per video, so I can certainly include NY in the next one.
I think the ugly state flags was actually intentional. Kinda pushing everyone to unify behind national flag as their identity. It’s human nature to feel part of a region or state. Often these get evaluated on differences from one another. And can lead to fracturing states.
If you're wondering why so many flags are a seal on a bedsheet it's because many were based on civil war regimental flags. Notice how so many are Union Blue.
Great video, but as a wisconsinite you might have missed the mark with our flag, nobody really talks about cranberries, if you wanted more accurate inspiration I'd do cheese / milk since we are America's dairyland, some variety of blues greens, and yellow would make sense from our various crops, waterways, and football team we worship. Also wisconsin had a really good relationship with native Americans, hence the native sounding names to many towns, villages and cities. So it might be cool to add a native influence somehow. Overall great video, you've earned my sub, I'd love to see a 2.0 of the Wisconsin flag.
I'll definitely include a 2.0 with a more in-depth and accurate flag for Wisconsin. I used the cranberry because it was hard to find any real symbolism for Wisconsin when doing research for it besides the near kidnapping of thanksgiving on the original flag. Thanks for the info!
@@DotaderDesign Hijacking Thanksgiving? I don't think so. The Cornucopia on the seal is a symbol of agricultural abundance. It is probably only in the last 50 years that the state became the leader in cranberry production. Part of this resulted because Ocean Spray set up a major cranberry product facility in the state. Wisconsin is also the highest hay producer. Should we use that. Flag suggestion A green field for agriculture and forrestry. Blue borders on the top and vertical edges for the boundary of Lakes Michigan and Superior plus the St Croix and Mississippi to the west. The blue also stands for the importance of water in recreation, tourism and industry. For visual interest have the edge of the outside blue border serrated to represent gear teeth. A blue field with a stylized Hardee hat to represent the ACW Iron Brigade. A blue field with a stylized eagle in gold. The eagle represents Old Abe. An eagle that was a civil war mascot of one of the State's volunteer infantry regiments.
Thank you for redesigning the Illinois flag. I am a native Chicagoan and I use the Chicago flag more than the State one. In fact I don’t even know the last time I saw one in the wild.
As a fellow New Hampshirite, You need to make a part 2 since I was a little bit left off as you didn't redesign the flag of New Hampshire in the video. Guess I'll wait for a part 2.
2:35 True! You have to cross the Dakotas and Manitoba to reach Hudson Bay; Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas to reach the Gulf of Mexico; Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon to reach the Pacific; and Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia to reach the Atlantic.
Aside from Kansas, who I don't think can pull off any kind of regal flag, all of these look really good and could work as real state flags, it's fantastic.
Minnesota could get some work, what about those two vertical stripes being a dark blue, representing the lakes, the water drop disappearing and the base of the tree becoming green?
Re: the Illinois redesign. Route 66 was/is a U.S. Highway, not an Interstate. However, your version is actually closer to the U.S. Route shield than the Interstate shield, apart from using the Interstate system colors rather than black on white. Seems to me that basing a state's flag on a heritage of flat surfaces and tyranny is kind of pathetic, but it does seem quite appropriate for the state so maybe it's fine. The Kansas redesign looks decent though I'd probably reverse the colors. Maryland is iconic and distinctive. No one will want to change that one. The others ... are better than what they've got now.
I think Delaware should keep its light blue and yellow colors, since it is distinctive both from the bluebells and the US flag. I don't think states should go out of their way for red/white/blue on their flags, since they usually fly alongside the national flag and should appear distinct from it. I do think the star in the center representing their first-state status is fine, since it's really the only notable fact about Delaware.
I could try this, but part of me wants to object to avoiding red white & blue because of just how well flags like Ohio do alongside the American flag. But I can make a re-redesign on Twitter if you follow me on there!
- i think illinois' flag would look better without the tophat - wisconsin's flag looks way too much like madagascar, although i guess that is okay because missouri's looks like paraguay's - as a life-long resident of connecticut, we do not give a shit about grapes, honestly representing the connecticut river would probably be a better pick - maryland's flag redesign is kind of unneeded, maryland's normal flag is a W and imo is one of if not the best flag out of all the states, also, the new flag looks like a lightbulb rather than a seashell at first glance.
As an Illinoisan, (I don’t even know how to spell Illinoisan) I agree that our flag sucks ass, but I really don’t want our flag to be associated with a highway. Also I don’t like the color palette, perhaps a softer red and blue? (But I do like the Lincoln hat)
My first criticism on the Illinois flag! I see how the highway might not aptly represent the state. I'll probably have to make a separate video with all the re-redesigns based on comments from this video. Thank you!
I saw a more abstract take on the Wisconsin flag that makes light of the cheese element that everyone seems to want from it so badly, so I'll have to include that in the next video
I'm not an American or something but I gotta admit, even though it's complicated - I absolutely adore the current flag of Maryland! Idk why but maybe it's cause it reminds me of Harry Potter
I don't blame you! It's a very all-or-nothing flag. With most, it seems to be either amazing or terrible. It's definitely not the worst, but it's also far from the best.
Maryland is generally considered one of the _best_ State flags. I didn’t care for it the first few times I saw it, but it grew on me. In my opinion, it should be left alone. Your Connecticut redesign was okay. This is my home state, but I never understood why _grapes_ are on the state flag. An oak tree, symbolizing the Charter Oak, would be a meaningful symbol.
The reason washington didn;t incorporate the seal is because the only thing Washington state and DC have in common is the name. Otherewise, we have nothing to do with Washington, the man, unlike DC. So as a native Washingtonian, no offense, but hell no, I feel strongly repulsed by that design. Im sure it's a great design, but as a flag for the state, it has nothing to do with us.
I am not a Marylander but I agree. I always wondered something though. A person from EngLAND is English. A person from ScotLAND is Scotish. A person from IreLAND is Irish. Shouldn't a person from Maryland be Marish? Or Maryish?
I made a Delaware flag design; It keeps the blue background and the yellow diamond and inside the yellow diamond is a Blue hen (Delawares national bird) and as a delawarean, ’The first state’ is such a overused and boring title. so instead, I made ’The Diamond State’ go around the bottom of the yellow diamond. I hate to say this, but your Delaware flag design is, uhm interesting 😅.
You didn't do Kentucky (my state) but yet you did Maryland?! A state that's fortunate to not just have a blue background and a seal as a flag!!!!!!! 😡😡😡😡😡
Kentucky is coming up in part 2, guaranteed! Honorable mentions are flags that might not be awful but could use a change. Most of the blue bros are probably gonna be finished by part 3

That's completely true, state flags were frowned upon when the country was first founded, because it was seen as a separation from the country.
