Hey Drew, don't know if people have said this before, but if you want games with lots of puppets not being as disgusting, I recommend using the Colored Puppets mod. It changes the color of countries to the color of whoever is controlling them.
I think the reason that the ideology doesn't do well in their respective games is that misery builds character: because the other guys have to deal with civil wars and shit it makes them far more militarized and spoiling for a fight.
So the British decolonized in my latest game, India had a civil war and for some reason the democratic side joined the Allies and the defending non aligned side was part of the coalition of free commonwealth states, so Chamberlain smartly declared war on all of its former colonies
