Stuck in PARK? Dead Cluster? No COMM? (Cadillac SRX)

- This local shop told the customer that his 2016 Cadillac SRX had a bad battery.
Customer replaced the battery himself, and then the car shows back up at the shop on a TOW TRUCK!
Apparently it starts and runs, but can't shift out of park, and nothing works inside...DEAD cluster, HVAC, and even my scanner bluetooth dongle won't power up.
Let's see if we can efficiently pinpoint the problem...hopefully it's something simple!

I paused at 3:00 to note that I have had a huge number of GM's come through my shop that have that same fuse block on the battery. Almost always, someone had replaced the battery and left one of the connectors loose. More often than not, it's usually the 250A one. Nice find though Ivan. Got to love the super simple fixes.
Worked at a Cadi stealership
I will back this up 100% we saw it often too. Even had a comeback on flatbed after a new lube tech at our dealership replaced a battery. Loose connections in the fuse block.
Ivan this one was too easy for you, have the owner drive it into a lake and bring it back to you.
😅😅😅
And leave the fish in the trunk 😊
Agreed. Too easy. :) about time you got a break!
Noooo no more flood cars! 😆
...and smear peanut butter on the wiring harness and park it in a field for a few weeks!
Love the no parts required fixes. Great job.
It's usually the loose nut behind the steering wheel causing the problem!
You said it brother, I know your right!
Truth
There's a short between the steering wheel and the front seat. 😊
You could tell that by the stations programmed into the radio.
My grandfather had a leased SRX that lost all lights, exterior and interior, while driving at night but the engine was still running fine. Dealer said he was crazy and there was no codes. It happened again and he paid to break the lease. This very well could have been the problem.
Nice to know customer was messing in there. Solves mystery connection and all the “what could have happened” scenarios! Thanks for posting, Ivan.
Yes, many customers would have straight out DENIED that they'd touched anything!
It's ridiculous when you have to take so much apart to just change a battery. Great job Ivan!!!!
That is an easy battery change out. Try a Chrysler Sebring, you need to remove the front wheel.
It's amazing what a little corrosion can do. Had a car once that would not turn over. Took off battery terminals, cleaned them and no more problem. Always start at square one and work down.
Ivan is the gold standard of automotive diagnostic troubleshooting. There simply is no one better.
The guy is nothing short of brilliant
@@mikefoehr235 he cannot be dissuaded.
The remarkable thing about Ivan is that he can deal with old school technology like cold war British and Soviet cars all the way up to outrageously complicated EVs, Benzes and BMWs with 50 electronic modules and daunting canbus networks, etc. A man of many disciplines!
He should think open a accademy at State College...amazing knowledge, very good teacher
There are many great diagnosticians in this industry! Sign up for a conference or training seminar and share the knowledge! 😀
Why did 2 of the fuses studs not have nuts at all on them? Great fix.
Spares not in use on this particular model, thats all.
Saw a video recently by South Main Auto with similar crazy symptoms. Problem was a badly corroded primary ground wire on bottom of vehicle. Funny how one tiny thing can cause such a massive set of problems. Well done on the diagnosis/fix!
Hi Ivan! I just got a fun one at my little shop-2009 Buick Lucerne no blower.
Used car auction special, the tried lot tried a blower motor, resister, relay and fuse, but no power. When I got it I checked the wire diagram and it just didn't look right at the under seat fuse box-Found "2008" written in junk yard pen on the fuse box.
Long story short, wrong fuse box provided no power to blower and 2009 doesn't even use a fan relay.
One must think like Ivan!
I've got similar FuseBox assy on my Skoda Fabia! Had to remove every terminal, wire clean + some di-grease and retorque them all. Now no more 12V issues!
great job ,,,,,i was told early while learning electrical that it will make a man very humble ! here is the proof LOL ,,,,,,,still learning things at 70 god bless you sir
Lesson learned--don't take anything for granted and test every connection starting at the battery.
Does it have a battery in it? Okay. Install a battery in it...
I love the way you went about it and that you used a power tool to take the nut off. Good job.
Oxidized connectors are a very common problem on the old British cars I work on, especially in more humid climates prevalent east of the Mississippi. I would have removed all the nuts and cleaned all contact areas as other fuses are likely to be corroded.
oxidation at the grounding straps was a real problem.
hello where are the 2 other missing nuts 2:51 100A and the 80A
Great fix ! At 2:22 , there are no nuts on the ones labeled 80A and 100A . Is there a reason ? Are they being used ?
Unused 👍
Yeah, a loose nut for sure...the loose nut that didn't tighten that nut correctly when they replaced the battery! Seen it before, easy check when you have multiple circuits dead in a GM these days and you hear "We just put a new battery in it".
A loose nut! That's nuts, Ivan! Fast fix :-)
A memory of similar problem came to my mind. My friend had Peugeot Boxer van a long time ago. It didn’t have power in the obd connector. We didn’t have power distribution diagrams. My friend injected 12v to the obd and suddenly the dome light came on 😂 We replaced the dome light fuse and the obd came back to life. I personally wouldn’t have done it but certainly it worked😂
Logical troubleshooting. Well done. Check the easy things first every time.
I am surprised you didn't spray DeOxit on the connectors. I have a good friend who has one of those; if we have trouble, that is the first thing I will check. GREAT VIDEO!
Similar connection issue on a Lumina where headlights would shut off, battery light on intermittently, and eventually stall. Same fastener, unfused terminal block near battery.
Good easy fix got to like that. The DLC on my grandaughters astra had no DC , traced it back the DLC link fuse removed probably by a previous mechanic who didnt want easy access to get OBD codes etc.
Loose nuts... were the bane of Scrat's existence in "Ice Age", and I'm sure they have caused numerous other issues 😜 Nice No Parts Required, Ivan!!!
Ivan, that was an easy fix for you brother as always thanks for sharing.
To Ivan. Always great videos, and happy holidays. Also, I just bought that TopDon mini obd2 scanner tool, outstanding.
Oh good you fixed it fast so you have more time to upload more videos 👍🏼
Ivan fixed it again.
Ivan if you used a break out box would it lead to the same problem . ?? thanks as always go back to basics !!
I’ve seen that odd style “maxi fuse” in VW mk6 cars (2013, 2014). Am surprised to see it in a Cadillac. If one leg of the fuse pack blows, the entire maxi fuse needs to be replaced ($50). And the only way to see if it’s blown is by checking continuity across each leg, as you did. There appears to be no visual sign when one or more fuse legs blow. Not a fan.
Easy peasy... great job Ivan, now Flush that Toilet.
Thanks for posting, Ivan.
You got a break for a change!
Good one Ivan
Every time I hear, “hopefully it’s something simple” I look to see how much time is left in the video to see just how “simple” it will be.
sometimes you get a nut loose behind the wheel, we get plenty over here 🇬🇧, great vid
Thanks Ivan!
My main concern is that the customer didn't connect replacing the battery with the vehicle starting to have problems.
Good point but loose connections can work for a while untill the sparking/ heat causes oxidation. Also some people are not inclined ever to question themselves.
Wow they managed to make 2016 that looks like it came out in 04
This is a common problem with late model GM while replacing the battery the junction block needs to be removed and many times i have found these nuts loose
Over here in the U.K. Ford have put those maxi fuses in their Transit vans & pick ups - I've had no end of problems with them and their carriers - all the vehicles I run have two batteries which sort of divide the power requirements between them ( I bought the vehicles used ) the ground cable has some kind of gadget which is an absolute pain in the rear - one vehicle had an intermittent fault in it for months before I twigged it and before I did - it had got me what you would call a $100 citation for stopping where I shouldn't - so I complained (appealled) DON'T at least over here because I went before an old duffer of a judge who had guilty written all over him before I walked in - and bloody fine is growing all the time. Ironically, the same fault occurred in the next truck which broke down it the fast lane of our M25 Motorway - that was damn scary - as the traffic which had slowed immediately speeded up as soon as I stopped and was soon passing at 80mph ( we have a 70mph limit but no one cares ) after an hour the Traffic Police stopped all five lanes and rescued me from the central concrete wall - they were very good about it (no ticket) but after hooking me up and towing to the hard shoulder - they got back in their squaddie and drove off waving a hearty cheerio. Cheers boys!
Nice! I admit I like these types of videos from time to time rather than the ones where you do hardcore wiring diagram studies and oscilloscope analysis, lol.
Me too LOL!
That was a quickie😉
Thanks for sharing BRO👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nothing wrong with a quickie once in a while 😎😁
Does the scanner not throw an ID 10 T code in cases like this?
People meddling where they ought not to be meddling. Eric O.
I have a 2012 srx performance and I jumped my car recently and the gauge cluster went out also the hands in the cluster went backwards. Can you help me?
Did someone loosen up those connections when the battery was replaced?
yep... we seem to have a epidemic of loose nuts lately. Cool video
These manufacturers make things as if everyone who goes under the hood will know what they're doing and care about it as well. Nope. This customer was without their vehicle until someone who knows what they were doing could take a look at it. I hope they saved money on the battery install. Smh
Nice work.
Good fix
Nice video and quick diagnosis. Usually the loose nut is behind the wheel on those three letter Cadillacs. 🤣🤣
A little loose ground here, a little moisture there. These are things we dream of. ☺
That is nuts !
werent there some missing nuts to the left of the one you were testing?
the die hard battery made me chuckle :)
Why is there no nut on the 80A &100A ?
Not used
A nylock or a different type of locking nut would permanently fix that. Great repair
Not sure about that as you are introducing a resistance between plate connector and screw pillar,
I would not use that. Better just ordinary flanged nut and preferably copper washer. All sealed by dielectric grease.
Probably happened when the battery got replaced !
So then the problem was a loose nut before the wheel not behind it . Thanks
You’re a freaking genius!
easy one for change
We can always rely on GM to deliver a good video.
LOL
“No parts required!” 😊
Love it always something super simple
That was easy! I owned a 2012 Cadillac SRX Turbo Premium, what a piece of crap that was! Spent many thousands in repeated issues with the ECM and throttle Positioner Sensors, the car would, for no reason stutter, go into limp mode, load it on a flatbed, and replace the Turbo, the intercooler. etc, etc. I got rid of it cheaply and replaced it with a 2013 Lincoln MKS Base that has given me no grief!
Like Homer Simpson likes to say: "DOH!!"
Piece of cake on this one, Ivan! Have a nice day! 👍👌💯💯🍰🍰
DeoxIT? 🤔
and the customer was charged a nominal $2000.... LOL. great find
1:09 - my initial step would be breakout box to the OBDII port, am I missing voltage to the port or ground? What's the resistance across the bus wiring? 120 ohms or 60? If 120 with lack of power I would suspect harness damage as one terminating resistor is missing from the link too.
my 2008 f150 xlt 5.4 has an annoying intermittent battery draw ...using a test light inline at battery it pulses bright and dim when the draw is active and stays dim when not active ...any suggestions of where to start looking if anyone has seen this problem before would be appreciated
Use an ammeter. In series Test light is not a valid test!
got to appreciate the easy ones!!!!
Another quality GM product
Haven't fished video, but can tell you that's a diehard battery from advance auto, the sales person perhaps didn't tighten it ?
Those 100 amp fuses don't seem to have a nut on at all!
Awesome
Thanks glad I saw your video.Mrr o will like this video.!!!
Seen that before
Also, two of the fuse nuts are missing.
Not used
Anyone else see that spark from the 60a to the 250a at around 3:40
sweet !!!
Badabing done.
You had to get an easy one one day. Enjoy 😊
I saw something recently about relating IQ and Careers. They had auto technicians as a fairly low IQ job. Utterly ridiculous
I'm sure the automotive field has a huge spread of IQ... But with cars getting so computerized one would hope the average qualifications are going up proportionally!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics The low IQ people are the ones who write those click-bait articles about topics they have no knowledge about.
Sometimes life is simple
Keep it simple and start woth battery fuse. And it may be good but broke.
A sleepy costumer? Double charge him!
Called for the same problem, hopefully it's gonna be so easy too😂😂😂😂
👏
I got my transducer haven't had a chance to use it yet. Today I went and bought a enclosed trailer, the one turn signal wasn't working so I asked the guy if he had a test light. He said yeah I got one, he brought me the test light and a 12v car battery so I could use it...😂😂😂 I tried not to laugh and just told him that's not how that works will just use a ground on the trailer.
Yeah it is generallythe nut behind the wheel 🤣🤣Cheers Ivan easy diag call easy money.
I wasn't even sure this one was worth posting haha
👍
Fun one Ivan!! Lol!!
A problem case from no other than Statin Island 🏝️🏖️🏝️. Keith De Fazio where art thou ?
I'm still waiting on Ivan to break out the new kingbolen k10
This was too easy for ya bud. Good find.
nice
That was fun
dont you need 4 nuts for each fuse
OMG, I had the same exact problem with the same exact SUV. 2012 Cadillac SRX, Even White LOL. A customer brought it for oil change and some misc maintenance. I don't recall why I removed the computer off the fuse box, it's been 2 years, I may have been checking the battery terminals and such. Anyway, I put it back on the car is dead. Nothing, wouldn't start. It has power to the dash, doors, lights, but will NOT START. I towed it to the dealer on my dime, the did the same damn thing, in 2 minutes. Tightened the screws and it worked, car ran. What the hell is that shit? POS GM, I hate GM. LOL
But now you know for next time... No dealer required 😉
