- I visited Hildale, Utah & Colorado City, Arizona. Both towns were founded by polygamists. I also visited Centennial Park, Arizona, which is currently fully populated by polygamists.

Travel Vlog 264
My husband grew up in Fredonia, 35 miles away from Hildale and Colorado City. He talks about some of the boys that were sent away from Colorado City to live with relatives in Fredonia, and a couple of them just disappeared, never to be heard from again. I'm so glad Jeffs was convicted and stopped, and that the towns are opening up. They were such a closed society for so many years, it was very uncomfortable to visit there.
Interesting.
Standard math, if the elder gets 4 wives then the 3 juniors get zero wives.
I stopped for gas and snacks. I paid and was asked to leave.
Your husband probably knows Morgan Bingham from fredonia.
I'm from Lake Havasu, so Colorado City is in my County. Are we sure that they are not just hiding it more since eyes were put on them, or is it actually changing?
Year before last we stayed at a hotel in Hildale. The lady checking us in was a sweetheart. She was raised in polygamy and was married with 2 sister wives. She shared so much information about it all including telling me she thought it was a cult and if she had it to do over she would not live polygamy.
They are usually good people, I wouldn't mind if they were almost everywhere, clean people, no crime, just a little off to themselvs,,lol
She can move away to get out of that situation!
Astounding! This place has really changed
Of course it is a cult
Yeah to bad she hadn't just joined the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints and had only one husband she would have been happier since we do not practice polygame. Blessings
$10,000 a year per Capita income and living in a multi million dollar mansion and the IRS has no interest in whats happening?

Barely has anything to do with this. @@shun8733
Yeah, that's what I was wondering...
Why aren't they prosecuted for welfare fraud? They know who the fathers of the children are. Tax payers shouldn't have to pay child support (and food stamps) when the fathers are employed, own property, etc. Like with Al Capone-follow the money and put them in prison for fraud, tax evasion. All of them, including the women who sign their names on welfare request documents. They deserve to be in prison for what they put children through.
Because that is not, legally, welfare fraud. Knowing who the biological father and/or receiving child support does not prevent a person from getting state welfare benefits.
Just hearing the statistic that the median age in the one town is 16 years was flat-out creepy.
Fertile is not creepy. 🤣
Very few of the people in that area would willingly participate in the census or give information to pollsters, polygamy or not. The average age is likely skewed as the younger age persons headcount comes from school district - and the adult headcount is low because they don’t participate. But Mormons do have large families so the average age is likely younger than most places - but it’s not 16.
Agree. That's a kid!!!! Weird weird weird.
Your simpage is showing. A young age means they're having children.

I'm curious as to what they do for a living? Since the average annual income per person is so low and yet the the average household income being much higher, it makes me wonder if they mostly collect welfare and then pull their money together to buy their homes? This seems to be the case in many large private "religious" communities except the Amish and meninites who work extremely hard to earn a living, but what exactly do these people do for work?
Edit; I just googled and read that because the women are legally considered "single mothers" they do receive government assistance and food stamps, and Warren Jeffs brother and others were investigated for welfare fraud and laundering millions of dollars in food stamps.
And the Republicans complain about immigrants supposedly collecting public aid.....
I would guess the Church supports them
@@spencer-fatbike the church gets their money from the parishioners, so the question remains, where do the parishioners get their money?
It seems to me that if all these men want so many wives and children, then they should be prepared to support them without relying on government funds
SNAP recognizes only one female of a household as being married,
so the rest are regarded as single mothers....oops you got it edited there.
they own and operate many businesses, many that mostly interact with other mormon businesses and some that operate in public (and are very successful+profitable). I recently learned that the pest control company thati use in the midwest are one of those businesses. i always thought something was off about them but couldn't put my finger on it
Very educational, Warren Jeffs is very creepy and rightfully where he belongs.
He'll be eligible for parole in 2038.
I am going to move there and open a "Five Wives Burgers and Fries!"
Hopefully it's better than the burger places in Colorado City. These restaurants are ass😂
LMFAO
good luck with that
I give you A LOT of credit for driving through there. We went camping near there and my husband refused to drive through there in fear of being shot at. Thank you for taking us, I think the area is very pretty.
Lol it's a main drive to az
It’s not that scary. I lived there for 4 years, openly as a Christian.
@@1NidaAll White sounds scary if you’re not White. Clearly, you’re White and don’t have to worry about being shot at.🙄
😂😂 must be great living in fear like that😊
My Dad always said he didn't care what other people did as long as it didn't scare the horses. Cool video, thanks much!
I don't care what anyone else does, either, as long as it's not ILLEGAL.
@@craigcanfield5474 laws are subject to local values and current trends in legislation.
One needs a deep foundation in either natural law philosophy or the Scriptures to have a compass to sort those different versions effectively into moral categories - or become a terrible postmodern.
Or just go with the local majority.
But then what do you do when you move?
Europe is introducing polygamy for immigrants through the backdoor while otherwise probably reducing liberties usually on all legal fronts for the locals where they can in all aspects of life.
I care. Our kids and grandkids have to live in the same world as those who were raised by Uncle Pervy and his brainless robot women.
That’s a great saying
But all the "single unwed" mothers collected taxpayer welfare. Now that is something to care about.
Fascinating video and gorgeous views! Enjoyed learning about this segment of society. Looking forward to your next video!
Nice scenery and great history lesson as always, Joe and Nic!
These towns have cemeteries where hundreds of graves are for infants. The reason for this is the inbreeding which results in devastating birth defects. It is absolutely gut-wrenching.
I always wondered about the inbreeding.
That's awful.
I know the Amish have a lot of developmental disabilities in their children but idk about their infant mortality rate.
And you used to not see handicapped kids at all here. Now you do
Yeah the same families have been living in these towns for over 120 years. I doubt they get many new recruits. Everyone in the towns are probably Cousins.
Oh yea right... sounds like bunch of ginned up fear. Be sure to get your 5th COVID booster!
My understanding is they practice infanticide; if they baby is born with any defects they are disposed of.
Scenic, concise & informative...Thanks!...
Ay Sarah, Alice, Lucy, Jackie, Chistine, Kay. Get our 27 kids off the road. Pronto! Joe & Nic will be coming to town today. Don't forget to tell the neighbours!🎉😂
Wow what a road trip that was!! Stange stuff over there and the roads were terrible. I was wondering if u were gonna get kicked out. Its was my first thought. Amazing stats on these places! Very eye opening! Thanx 4 the vid it was something else!! Nicole and u stay safe out there!

A fascinating video, with very interesting stories about the towns. Gorgeous scenery, and some very surprising statistics !! Looks like beautiful Autumn weather over there, perfect for exploring !! Thanks so much, Joe and Nic, a great video !!😊💚
That police officer in Centennial City bore down and got his message across. Creepy, indeed.
If they are so unashamed of what they are doing
Why do they hide behind walls and fences
Having two wives is a felony. You can believe what you're doing is right even if it's against the law.
They literally think you are evil, the world is evil and don't talk to the evil people.
@@mretaoin1 Being married to two wives is a felony. However, to avoid problems with the law, the husband will be legally married to one wife and the other wives are "spiritual wives" that he's married to only in the eyes of the church and not for legal purposes. Think of it as a man with a wife and lots of mistresses.
Not defending their beliefs but if someone was driving around gawking/taking pictures of me I would probably hide behind a wall/fence too.
A fantastic video Joe . Very interesting lifestyle they lead. Thanks for sharing.
we know where you are, but still miss the map...it's a nice touch, this just gets better and better. thanks .
The statistics just blew me away! Wow 😯
A classic episode already. The lore grows.
Continuing the great adventure! Love the channel!!!
Thanks so much!
This was an interesting one! I've not been to these towns specifically. One time I took a road trip with as friend and we cut across part of Utah. I just remember that the predominantly LDS areas were clean and well kept. Thank you for giving us the tour and a bit of a history lesson as well!
Another great video Joe thanks for showing me places I’d probably never see. With most videos I’m just gonna see some buildings and some scenery. You show the parts that interest me. But for me it’s the stats you put a lot of time and research into them. It’s one of my favorite parts. And on another note compared to where I’m stuck at. That’s one of the nicest bluest skys I’ve seen in a while. Waiting on you guys next video. Keep traveling and I’ll keep watching. LoL
I must say , this was your most interesting video by far , in my opinion.
Wow, thank you!
Nick one of your most fascinating videos! Thank you so much!

Scenery-wise, that area is one of my favorites in the entire country. Just find a small county road, pick a direction and drive. The views will not disappoint.
Oh wow! Like my comment on the previous video, we drove through these towns on our drive from St George thru Kayenta on our way to Lufkin. We had no idea of the stats of these places. We were astounded to hear your commentary and found it very interesting. This is the town we noticed a large flag on top of the escarpment in the background. We were thinking that would’ve been in Grand Staircase/Escalante, but were not certain. Thanks again for the video. Still can’t wait to see St George since we pondered the idea of living there. Seemed like a very nice place.
St George coming up this Tuesday morning. :)
Plan on spending tons of money to live
@US2A Right. Just a passing whim. I think housing there is really expensive, but cost of living is less than average, so I've read. Don't really know. Looks like a nice place close to some NP.
@@wbrown62 I know lots of people have had to move. Gas is expensive, food I'm not sure about but definitely more expensive then it used to be. If I didn't have my house there is no way I could afford to live here.
Thank you for this excellent video. Ive read several of the books written by former members. Interesting to see the cities.
We went through there several years ago before Warren Jeffs was arrested. It's the spookiest place I've ever seen.
Another beautiful state. I love the rock mountains. I'm amazed at the amount of young people living in the cities. I'm surprised at the crime rate. I can't imagine sharing my husband with someone else. Lol I enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing. 💗

You couldn't have covered this area better than any local. Your awesome! I live in St George and cannot wait for that video! Heads up, city's grown tremendously and the drivers SUCK here, stay safe and defensive
As a viewer from England, I find your road trips really interesting. This one in particular as I have never heard of this polygamist society, it's something you wouldn't have thought of in this day and age. Keep up the great video's and adios :)
We absolutely love you guys!!!
Thank you!
We really enjoyed this vlog. Didn't know places like this still exist
communes like the 1970's Jim Jones commune, even in Guana, could be taken down but oh no ... not these.
Multiple women 1 man receiving welfare accounts for the imbalance of household income to individual income.
That was weird. In that part of the country, the houses at the edge of town are usually mobile homes or little houses. Hildale starts with large homes, and they just get bigger. And those imposing 8' walls, instead of fences of one or three wires.
I grew up on my grandparents ranch next to Short Creek / Colorado City I witnessed 1st hand the brutality of these Pligs towards kids that tried to run away one young girl was found in the waste water treatment pond another boy in the desert. 45 years ago there was only a handful of huge houses and they kept to themselves, neighbors who lived closer had to make sure everything was nailed down or it would disappear. My brothers run the ranch still today and there is no good feelings for these Pligs
The stories that come out of these towns are bizarre and horrifying.
Which stories?
I love your road trips. Joe, you have such a nice voice that I could listen to you all day. And Nic, you add class and humor to the trip. I hope you guys continue with your journeys for a long time. I am a fan.
watching from England great video, when you gave the figures out i wasnt surprised the crime rate is so low & amazing scenery
Interesting to say the least thanks for sharing

I ❤️ Arizona. This is my favorite video of yours. Great job. Thank you.
Joe, maybe visit Carthage Illinois. There's also a group in Texas.
Terrific video. I would have stayed away because of what I read about these communities during the Wearrren Jeffs era of domination and how local police were used to keep visitors out. It was run in a way that reflected the group’s paranoiac fears of outsiders. It looks fairly normal now except for those insane statistics reflecting abnormal average ages of residents and the weird distribution of household wealth and poverty. I’m grateful to you for giving a current view of these 3 towns. It is a true public service.
Greetings from the Netherlands. Great footage. Keep on with it, I watch it all .. ! 👊😎
Awesome! Thank you!
Beautifull scenery, I love how the grass is lightly green and in the backround the brown mountains. so peacefull
I know this is off topic, but I watch John Levi here on RUclips. My mind is racing thinking about all of the old ruins I've seen while Joe is driving. And in my head I keep saying (in John's voice of course!) "InCreDiBle". 😆 I'll finish the video now.
More kids, more Fed assistance. It is a business.Taxpayers feed them. Not the kids fault.
I think they have there own welfare systems within the church, I believe they take no government dollars( don't think they pay taxes as a church))?????
Yes. And the practice known as "bleed the beast". Just getting money from the government, in general, in other ways.
"Bleed the Beast" was their philosophy of getting welfare for all the "single unwed" mothers.
They feel they're entitled to bleed the system anytime, anwhere.
I guess welfare queens not applicable eh? 🤔
It’s always fun to watch your videos! If y’all did a video on Midvale, UT that would make my year!

Good morning Joe and Nicole! In all my travels I must say Utah is the most beautiful state in our country because of all the geological differences in just one single state…
I totally agree. The physical beauty of this state is incredible.
That's because Utah is Judah. It (America in general) is the Old World talked about in the bible. Look into it - it's pretty fascinating.
I once got to travel across country by bus when I was an 8yo. The one thing that sticks in my mind was the beauty of Colorado. It took my breath away.

Interesting trip here. I really never explored Utah. My wife and I drove through I guess the central part from east to west maybe five years ago. Remember the Salt Lake area desolate area all the way to the Nevada border. I don’t believe there was a town once we left the SLC area.

Being from the UK , I can't for the life of me understand why the girls and women put up with that way of life for so long, I guess they where imprisoned in a way . Looking at those high fences and walls I can't help but imagine the horrors that went on / go on behind them , just awful those poor sweet kids , truly horrific that so little was done for so long
Excellent tour and guide of the towns! Hard to believe that type of smack still goes on in this country.
In February of 1991 I did a backpack in the Canaan Wilderness of Utah. To get to the trailhead I had to drive through a neighborhood in Hildale. As I drove through I saw three young gals walking down the street with a baby carriage and they were dressed in cloths that looked like from the old west of about the year 1850ish. I nearly stopped and asked where the costume party was. When I got home and researched the area I thanked my lucky stars I kept my mouth shut. I used to travel alone a lot when I was young and always was very friendly but sometimes it's easy to over-step if you aren't familiar with the area and customs. Thanks for the video. Always enjoy your travels.
That beautiful house you pointed out, with the red pickup in front, looks more like a Fortress than a house to me!!!
They are fortresses. To keep outsiders out and keep the underage wives in.
Lots of houses there are insane
I dont need to go on holiday, watching this from my home in wales, really enjoyable and educational
Love your videos. Great work. Can you please include the numbers for widowers in the small towns too? And why did switch from the Bronco Sport to a Jeep? Thanks.
What an education I received from this video. Sometimes your stats on the towns you visit can be a little dry. These stats were goosey juicy. The young people that govern these cities should realize that lawn mowers and street pavers do exist. I do wish you would have had lunch in one of those places. All in all, another great video- Sincerely, JIm Thornton
Can somebody help me understand why adultery is not a crime but Polygamy is?
In the early 2000s I drove through these towns. I had read Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven and, like someone slowing down to gawk at a car accident, I couldn't resist the detour off I-15 when I was on a road trip from Seattle to Vegas and LA. I noticed the large houses since they were under constant renovation as each new Sister Wife needed her own bedroom. (I suspect most of the employment in these towns was either construction or the local Home Depot.)
I drove through without stopping or even slowing down, although I watched my speedometer very closely, same as I do when my road trips take me through Alabama and Mississippi, to avoid giving the local cops any excuse to pull me over. I was already enough of a sitting duck with my Washington license plates but I didn't want to make things worse. This was still before Warren Jeffs was arrested and I knew this was a scary place. I would never have gone anywhere within 100 miles of the area a few years later after I put an Obama bumper sticker on my car.
The biggest thing I noticed was that many of the women and girls wore 1800s dresses and bonnets straight out of a Little House on the Prairie rerun. When I lived in the Boston area in the 1980s and 90s and my weekend road trips took me through Island Pond, Vermont, which was at that time (is it still???) the center of some other weirdo religious cult I noticed the same thing. The men and boys wore the same jeans, sweatpants, shorts, T-shirts, hoodies, tank tops and baseball caps that guys everywhere in North America, myself included, typically wear. But the female residents had a strict antiquated dress code. Would the male residents have bought into all this if they had been required to wear the same clothes men wore in the 1800s? Black wool jacket in Arizona in August? No thanks.
Thanks for visiting these towns and updating those of us who are only going on information from 20 years ago. Love your videos - keep up the great work!
Aren't you ashamed of your obummer sticker?
Those women still dress like that. I live in Mesquite and see them every time I go into St. George, Utah, to shop.
