The growth is crazy
Utah is one of my favorite states. The sheer beauty of God's creation is magnified greatly. You gave a wonderful tour of such a beautiful place. It's been many years since I was there (1970's) and oh my goodness how it's changed. Another wonderful tour. What I love about your videos is that I feel like I'm on vacation with y'all. I got so excited for this one as my friend lives in St George. We were flying over from the U.K. to visit but a family death stopped the trip. It sure looks lovely. Thanks for showing us Joey.
Incase anyone is wondering, the big 'D' on the mesa stands for Dixie, the city's nickname (Utah's) Dixie. By the way, on the other side of the mesa spans an area larger than downtown made up of mostly residential neighborhoods. Many of you probably thought the whole town was in view from the Cliffside Restaurant where they were eating, but that was just downtown or central St George. It's unfortunate they didn't tour more of the city's incredible homes and neighborhoods

Thanks for another very nice video. St. George is quite the place. That part of the country is just gorgeous. My brother lives 40 miles north of there in a small community called New Harmony. He has been there for 21 years and says the growth of St. George has been insane with no end in sight. The builders are putting up housing as fast as possible and can't keep up with demand. The big looming problem of such growth is limited water supply. They want to run a pipeline from Lake Powell, but I don't know how that will work out. It does get hot in the summer - this past summer highs were over 110. We lived in northern Arizona in the 1960's and at that time the population of St. George was only around 7,000.

The roads are wide pretty much all over Utah. They were made wide so wagons could be turned around. When they used to be used, anyway.
My husbands rich grandma used to live here.
Funny you say you it’s similar weather to Las Vegas. She kind of goes between St. George, Californa, and Las Vegas(where my husband is from) and moves where she wants to at the time.
She enjoyed living here though.

Looks like a great city. That's neat, enjoying meals while enjoying the view of the city and it's incredible seeing the Mojave desert on the other side along with cliffs. The bike trail along the cliff is more for pro or experts. Looks like you had a great deal.

Thank you Joe, great video. I learned things i didn't know abs i have lived in st george since 2012 and the growth since 2005 had been very dramatic. As for being cool at night only in the winter I the summer it is over 100 degrees during the day and 80 to 90 at night. Judds is one of the first places I photographed in st george when we moved here. Wow when did they put the sculpture garden sign? There have been sculptures there as long as I remember but didn't ever see a sign. Most really have been a long time since I have been downtown cause I have never seen the veterans memorial. Yeah that cannon hasn't been out any of the times I have been through the visitors center. As far as the median home values. The cost of rent or mortgages have pretty much doubled since we moved here in 2012, with the bulk of it being since 2019/20 when a huge migraine of people moved here from California and pushed the prices of homes up after selling their homes in California. We pay more than double what we paid when we first moved here. Going from 750 a month to 1500. With $400 of that increase being the last 2 and 1/2 years.
How do they keep the palm trees alive every winter in St. George. Or is it just a matter of time when an unusually cold winter kill them all off?

We are finally getting to do a road trip we had planned back in March but , we had so much going on, we could not leave till , next month , heading up to Asheville NC area , then VA, and WV . So we are looking forward to that little road trip.
I grew up in Hurrican and hatted it. Now I'm in my early 40s and living in the Phx area. Id give anything to be able to move back to St. George or Hurrican, it's just so expensive now and not a lot of job options.

I remember going to a river near there when it was low. We laid in the water and felt warm spring water massage us.... bubbling sand. We drove down from Pocatello (Poky)

In the early 90s I lived in Port Aransas, Texas population 1968.... Planning a trip for the Oct eclipse and it's grown so much I feel like a fossil.

Grew up in cedar city, we'd go to st George almost every weekend cause it was the "big city" alittle more to do. Up on the dixie rock close by where you started the video was a popular place to hang out at night until the cops showed up and kicked us out

"Over the past 30 years..." that's about how long I've been passing through St George on my way to and from Zion and the parks. As you say, the place has exploded...the development strip seems destined to extend all the way to Hurricane (if it hasn't already). It's cool to do the downtown ramble with you--I've done the same, even have a picture of the Dixie Photo Shop in an album somewhere. So, you're headed for a haunted hotel in the middle of nowhere in Nevada, eh? The Mizpah, maybe? Happy trails!

You could've taken a free tour inside that temple as it just had a 3 year rennovation and is open to the public for a short time. This is my hometown. My mom has lived just down from that temple since 1934. Now there's another brand new temple opening this December out in Little Valley which is not in view. If you want to see some huge million dollar homes that's where the "pretty" people live. Too many people have moved here, it's ruined now. Lots of crime happening.
I think it's better with more people. It is becoming diverse and the crime rate really hasn't changed since the city has lied about it since the city pretty much started.
WOW, another amazing video. Your videos always impart useful information about the locations you visit. Often they surprise me with details about places I've always known were there but knew little about. Other times, as in this case, I've learned something useful about a town I never knew existed. And may possibly add to my travel vacation plans.

You're in hotspring Country if you're still out west be sure to hit a few up it's the right time of year for them
My family moved to St. George in 1984. I thought that I was going to die because it was so boring and NO shopping and it gets sooooooo HOT in the summer (between the end of June to the first of September), BUT, the rest of the year has Amazing weather! I can say that I do not like the growth! The people that are moving here are something else, in fact, I would say that I feel like we live in a "Little Las Vegas" now. ( We tried to live in Las Vegas in the early 1990's because of my husband's business, it was horrifying, and we moved back to the St. George area after a couple of years.) Needless to say, I DON'T like the increase in people and the higher prices of our homes! The city and county does, $$$$$ , I can say, Kudos to you!!! I learned more about the St. George history from your video than I ever learned in the 40 years that we have lived here! I'm also impressed that you ate outside on Labor day! Hot Tamale! Great job of your interpretation of everything here! FYI: "Painted Pony"(Downtown) is a much better restaurant. Good job and I've watched a few of your videos on different areas! Show some quaint smaller cities with lower prices! 🙂😀

Well another great video. You guys sure come up with some great places to visit. One question though, in the opening scenes the was a large white D on the side the escarpment. Out west the letters on a hill or mountain usually represent the nearest high school or college. In this case it stands for Dixie.
The first time I ever heard of St. George was from a documentary quite a few years ago about how many of the cast and crew on the 1956 film "The Conqueror" had died of cancer. It was said that about 40% of the people who worked on the set on location in southern Utah developed some form of cancer during their life time.The director, Dick Powell, actors John Wayne, Rita Hayworth, Agnes Morehead, John Hoyt, and others died from cancer. Lee Van Cleef died of a heart attack but had throat cancer at the time. Wayne's cancer it is believed came from smoking, but his son and other relatives who visited the set were treated for various cancers. Another actor upon hearing he had cancer committed suicide. Morehead neither smoked nor drank.
The 50s were the Cold War years and there were various nuclear tests in Nevada/Utah area. I guess not too many electoral votes in those areas then. In some tests which were above ground much of the radiation fallout drifted and fell near St. George near where filming was taking place. There were about a 100 nuclear test bombs detonated in the area for over a decade. Howard Hughes produced the film, and when they had to do re-shoots back in Hollywood, Hughes had tons of the soil shipped back there. Had to make it real. Hughes, apparently feeling some guilt over having the film shot at such a hazardous waste site, bought all the prints-- hoping not to have them distributed.
In any event the controversy went on for years, especially for TV programs and newspapers looking to increase sales on stories that the set was haunted, or cursed by the native peoples, or government conspiracy cover-ups. Some say the cancer rate for all on the set was no better or worse than the national average. Anyway, that's how I first heard about St. George. The last time I was there was in the 90s and everything looked so new. Now I know why, all that growth! Apparently there isn't much fallout these days from new-comers and visitors from the old fallout news! Also there have been several movies made in the St. George area since the Cold War years and no one seems too freaked out about the old cancer curse of 1956 "The Conqueror." For what it is worth, critics panned the flick.

Gee, they weren't there filming long enough to make much of a difference. It's not like they lived there over time. I'd look at where these people came from instead. What is the cancer rate there now?
Also back when the tests were going on people used to go out near the test sites to watch them from a distance wearing sun glasses. Now I bet those people did get cancer.

As I understand it the test were going on doing the shooting of the scenes which were about 150 miles away from the test site, but the fall out material was blown downwind from the test site in the direction of St. George. Experts at the time predicted the fall out would not go towards St. George, but they were wrong.
Was the movie set "cursed," or did the crew get cancer directly related to the bomb testing? Or was it just another media way of selling magazines and TV programming? I read that they couldn't make a direct correlation between the testing and the incidence of cancer with the crew. I read all that long ago though. Don't know if there have been recent studies on the same subject. Many of the stars smoked and drank heavily, and in those days many of the things we now know that can cause cancer wasn't known then so things like the use of lead and fiberglass and mercury may been routinely used by many. One of the actors didn't smoke or drink however. I think I also read that the incident of cancer among the crew was no better or worse than the national US average. Since the issue didn't come up in many later pictures shot there, and there has been a population boom since then with no higher than normal special cancer concerns perhaps there never was a real story, I don't know. I would think the soil and everything about the town would still be contaminated, but I don't know about half-life stuff. Apparently the area has been well tested for contamination since then and the green light has long since been given. It hasn't stopped movie making there or citizens moving in.
There was a study about a Pacific atoll where many of its citizens did die as a direct result of atomic testing near the area. I think that island or portions of it are still off-limits to humans.
Many of the people (scientists) that built the atomic bomb, as well as reporters, etc watched the tests at the Trinity(?) site in New Mexico. They wore sun glasses to shield off the brightness, but I haven't read anything where they got cancer watching the test.
Would it be possible to add a historical photo, if possible, of what the city centers looked like originally? That would be interesting...love your channel.

Your wife Nicole looks almost exactly like my aunt Teresa. She lived in Texas I believe at one time if she still doesn't. Idk because I have not spoken to her since 2020. It's crazy how much they look alike. My Curtis family is from Tennessee though.
