- How far will $10 go at Aldi towards a balanced menu for the week? My Aldi grocery haul with food prep and menu. Prices are in my local area. Prices will vary across the USA.
This budget was quite a challenge. This is what I am able to make with the food on this $10 budget. Many people will need to add more. To get more calories from the diet you can forgo some of the money spent on vegetables for more caloric foods like peanut butter, cheese, hot dogs, etc.

Updated Aldi extreme grocery budget challenge for 2022!!! ruclips.net/video/n8tO-QbxeSc/видео.html
This was eye opening for me, a person who has been blessed with good jobs over the years, who’s never had to think about budgeting for food. I am sorry to say I’ve probably thrown away more food over a year than what was purchased so carefully and thoughtfully in this video. Thank you for opening my eyes on the reality of struggling families and individuals who face very tight finances. This has prompted me to donate to my town’s food shelf. Thank you.
spirals 73 so do I 🐁🌷🍳🍝🍲
Amen
Much love & respect ❤
I like these $10 challenges. It gives people who might be struggling ideas about how to eat for a week.
Thank you for watching them :)
And for anyone who wants to put their money to better use than spending more than necessary to eat a nutritious diet. People who want to get ahead, to set money back for a rainy day, want to pay for college, etc. Once I read someone who mentioned they paid their college from summer jobs , no loans and debt racked up. But they ate and lived frugally, even eating just rice with ketchup as a meal sometimes. Thank you for the great ideas for savings
Wow, who knew you could eat for a week what you spend on a single meal eating out!!!
Yes ma'am. I'm not struggling, but I do keep myself on a budget. If you "shop your pantry" before you go to the store, you find that you have beans, you have peanut butter, or pasta, or onions and other things that tend to stick around for a while. That helps you from rebuying stuff you already have and keeps the spending down. I learned that in combo from grandma and (relearned) RUclips.
It is very inspiring! you can eat heartily and healthy on a very tight budget. $10 is thebare minimum for a fast food meal for 2. Look what you can do with real food, for about the same time you go through a drive through
You can save money on the green onions by just regrowing them in a cup with enough water to cover the white part. It doesn't take very long either.
Yes! Just cut off an inch or less above the root and they will regrow in water, or in soil in a pot with drainage or outdoors. Lettuce and mamy other things will do the same.
Jennifer Riggs Thankyou 😊
Judy G Thankyou 😊
I do this and it's awesome! Great tip
I regrow my green onions. They regrow about 5 times. Just dont forget to replace the water every day or it will give off an unpleasant smell.
You know really. I am trying to retrain myself to stop my wasteful spending because you have really woke me up to just how cheaply a person can eat - and well. It seems simple but sometimes the simple things aren't so obvious. Once I clean out my fridge I am going to relearn how to shop. This is great!
It can be useful if you want to save up some money. Glad you like the videos.
Learn to go foraging also stinging nettles taste like spinach sting goes when in hot water also edible weeds such as plantain dandelion leaves make tea from pine needles full of vitamin c the list is endless wild mushrooms hedgerow goodies all depending on seasons of course
Eric Northman me too😊
I will do the same. My family of has spending 800 monthly with groceries, it's too much.
I think I will clean my fridge out also and stock it very conservatively
I can relate. There were times I had 5 bucks left and had two kids to feed. What has helped me is to stock up when things are on sale and freeze things I can freeze. I would go hungry before my kids go hungry. When they are with their dad on some weekends I live on rice and hotdogs. Coffee and toast for breakfast. God always provides.
Those sales are great for the pantry. God bless and carry you through your trying times.
I make a huge pot of vegetable soup each week for around $5. I get 2 meals per day out of it, and have instant oatmeal and coffee for breakfast. I buy shredded cheese to put on the soup.
That sounds like a good money-saving method, Cuddles.
Please share your vegetable soup recipe.
Would also love to know how you do a cheap vegetable soup because i'm a sucker for soups!
French union soup fills and is cheap and delicious
@@jakeg7033 I make elle Krieger's minestrone soup (food network) and it's delicious and pretty affordable. Base is canned tomatoes. I use 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes and a 15 oz can of diced and double the boullion for extra flavor.
In the late 90's I feed myself and the family next door (1 elderly woman with 3 grandsons) on $20 a week. It was very tough but I bought in deals.
Wow, that is amazing and generous.
Cleo Taylor What a nice person you are.
@@chicnoir29 if you don't do for your elders and the children who is going to help you if that time may come?
Wow, you are amazing🙏😊
@@cleotaylor1860 agree!
To you, who are struggling, I see you, I feel you. Stay strong.
Tyler Curtis 😊🙏
That actually brought tears to my eyes...
To those who are struggling use it as a lesson. I had been struggling for the longest time. I now have a good paying job and try to implement what I learned when I was struggling. I do spend more at the grocery store and this video is a good reminder that I should cut back so I can give to those that are still struggling. God bless.
I'm not struggling, but I thank you, Tyler, for that dose of humanity. You are a blessing.
Thank you🙏🙏🙏
I'm pregnant with my 5 child and my husband is the sole provider, so aldi is a blessing to us! Love the ideas you gave in this video 😊
Congrats on your 5th baby. That sounds like a big, beautiful family. Glad you like the video!
You made it work. You covered breakfast, lunch and dinner for so many days with $10. Great job.
Thank you, Jonita! It was a stretch. XOXO.
It’s so hard for older people, young moms with little ones, this is so informative and helps us find ways to eat healthy and cheaper! So ty!!
Save up on Coupons, you can sell stuff like metal and the like to different places, if you drink out of stuff like soda cans, save them instead of throwing them away, and you can get money out of them. See which grocery store around you is the cheapest, and go there instead. Go to places like Salvation army and the like, they will give you food if you're struggling.
I remember years ago a young girl told me in the grocery store that she only had 30 dollars a week for food and she said "Really". To which I thought "Goodness!". But watching your videos really woke me up and now I see Wow for 30.00 for one person you could really eat like a queen almost! Sometimes we just need to be woke up! THANKS for the heads up. I think everyone should watch your videos!
Thank you. That is really nice to hear.
Yeah seriously. I spend $100/week on groceries. I had no idea this was possible. But I have food allergies and I care about the environment, so I buy organic, cage free, free range, etc. I have to eat gluten free or I would die, so that's some $$$ plus I eat tons of produce. I guess I am fortunate to be able to afford the diet I want 🙏
Same here. Grateful to be able to eat and stay alive. It’s a challenge, these days.
You can do a lot with $30, including a beverage and dessert. Shop Walmart, Aldi's, and the Dollar Tree.
You can use the change to start your collection of spices at the dollar store.
If you can find deals on bags of veggies, stretch those into next week.
I am struggling as of late and your videos are a god send to me
That's very sweet of you. Godspeed to you through your troubles. Thank you.
Please look up food pantries in your area they will help also some towns have little free Pantry closets where you can take a can or two of things...best wishes.
Yes! If you call 211 they have operators that can give you phone numbers and info for food pantries, utility help, etc. No shame! Ive been to food pantries many times before!
It truly hurts me to see this situation when rich corporations are not paying taxes and other people have tight budgets for food and or meds. Hang in there, it won’t always be this way.
Go to your nearest Salvation Army, pray for you🙏😊
Don't skimp out on the beans girl! Rice and beans is probably the oldest budget friendly combo. Bread is filling but it's not particularly useful when on a small budget only because the high carb count will make you hungrier and irritable as a result. Next time replace the bread with some bean otherwise everything else you made looks delicious.
I like the decision to not use beans. I think there are enough videos that show the rice and bean budget, this was more creative in my opinion.
Agree. Beans are way more nutritious. Should include even when you’re not on a budget...anti-cancer, etc 😉
I don't like beans so I prefer bread
Melissa Skillens rice and beans and a porch egg with ketchup, had that today😊
Won't a balanced combination of rice *and* beans better serve to meet the 9 essential amino acids requirement?
I recently had to do exactly that and more, 1 1/2 months on $80. I made it
Mary, that was industrious of you! Glad you made it!
That wasn’t “that and more”, (which would have been less) it was you who had $3.33 more per week in your budget.
Agree with @ the quaint housewife!
@@kathrynwitte3398Why nit pick this lady? An $80 grocery budget for roughly ~6 weeks is amazing!
Mary Thompson you didn't make it! 🍕🍟🍝😳🥀🐸Supposed to be 60$ for 6 wks! Always thought wanting to do 40$ a week to test own will-power, also for healthy issue -> "eat less = make more for health = a kind of interval fasting", but just so hungry, always. It's not easy to control blood sugar if always hungery..
Pasta $1
Big jar of Prego like pasta sauce $.089
Bread $0.99
Eggs $.99
Butter $0.79
Almond milk 1.59
Box of Oatmeal ( about 10 packs)1.59
Leg quarters $3 ( when on sale)...if not just buy 2 rolls of ground turkey at 1.89 each
I've done this before during times when I was waiting on a new debit card, in between paydays etc.
I like whole oats so thats even cheaper. Buying brown sugar to add, or cinnamon, whatever you like, may be cheaper than the packets.
nightlady2001 if you like oatmeal in the packets, you can make your own mixes. My husband has CKD and loved those mixes, but was told not to eat them because of some of the preservatives. I found a recipe online and made it from scratch...but it was very easy and intuitive depending on your preferences. Now hubby just scoops the mix out of the canister and adds a nut milk and microwaves it. Just Google it. I do have a tip though so that it doesn’t go bad quickly if you are in a humid place. I freeze my oatmeal for 3 days to kill any eggs...no bugs that way.
@@nightlady2001 I think those packets are mostly sugar. They became popular when my kids were small and they just 'had to have them'. I used to add 1 packet to a whole pot of oatmeal. U can always add i a chopped apple and some cinnamon. It'll be plenty sweet.
Oats are a game changer living on a budget, if you're dairy sensitive like me you can even make your own insanely cheap milk with it. Even oat flour, oats really are so versatile.
I'd like to know where you shop? Butter never the price you mentionrd, nor any other item.,..I take it you live in another country? This question is for Porsche....
dried beans is another great item to get.
I remember being really broke during the recession in Ireland. In Lidl and Aldi I could get a whole bag of groceries for 20 euros. Felt great to be able to eat even though I only had 20 euros
I love Lidl too!
My $10 vegetarian (since I am vegetarian) grocery list would have been beans, rice, potatoes, eggs, tomato paste, green onions, bananas, and tortillas. :-)
Excellent choices!
Potatoes, rice and beans, lentils, always the cheapest way. Add a head of cabbage (small is all you need for one person).
Great choices!
Eggs.....
rivalstorm120 vegetarian =/= vegan
Dried beans and lentils are cheap, tasty, and a great source of protein.
Bingo. As well as Peanut butter.
Same with rice if you buy a big bag that can last a couple of weeks
If you are able ,a $40 budget for 4 weeks works out even better .
Buying a whole turkey will get you tons of meat and broth and can stretch for 4 weeks if frozen
Definitely more buying power that way.
I would love to see that too. I do a 2 week shopping with a mix of fresh produce for the first week or until they run out and then I switch over to frozen produce. I do oatmeal cooked with water and cinnomon with half a banana or raisins when bananas run out comes to only 10 to 12 cents a meal. Also I buy a head of cabbage so so cheap and I chop it for salads or cook it in soups or stews. Also make your own pasta. 4 eggs 3c of flour .48 cents for a pound. You can save a around a dollar which isnt much but you can use the flour and eggs for other recipes. Versatility is worth more. Dried beans are great too.
Yes. You can bake the whole turkey then cut up into ziplock bags and use according to need. In casseroles made with rice or pasta. Bread can be an expensive, low nutrition item so no bread.
Mary Ahrens you can use 1/2 wheat flour, 1/2 oak (or 1/3 whole wheat flour however ALDI seems no whole wheat so far) to make your own bread, or pita, or pancake which could add nutritions too also only pennies.
Oh that would be a good seris
I had an idea come to me that I wanted to share in case there is anyone planning on doing this exact challenge and wants an additional recipe idea. I noticed one subscriber below saying they were going to do it until the 25th so thought a new idea on the ingredients you already have would be welcome, or in case you were ever planning on doing this again yourself.
SO after that big build up, I remembered a quiche that I made one time back when I was vegetarian but not vegan, where you put cooked rice into the base of either one larger quiche dish or smaller ones, pushing the cooked rice in nice and firm so that there aren't any gaps.
Then you whisk up your eggs with some salt and pepper and then pour this gently into the base. sprinkle in whatever additions you have on hand, in your case some sliced up spring onions/scallions and one chopped tomato, I guess you could also crumble some of the sausage meat and sprinkle that in too if you wanted.
Then you just cook in the oven as you normally would a quiche, so about 350F/180C for around 30 mins or until the filling is set and cooked through and you will have a lovely quiche that can be used for lunch or dinner, which is made more filling because of the rice base. The rice crust by the way comes out lovely and golden, a bit crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, really good alternative to regular pastry crust and something I felt you could use to change things up a bit. Enjoy! :)
Also great when you can’t eat wheat, gluten free flour options can be expensive. This is an excellent idea, thank you for sharing!
I’m making this as soon as I return from my ALDI shopping trip - thank you for the recipe! ☺️
You really need to add milk or cream to get quiche...otherwise it's just baked scrambled eggs.
Always learning wow, now I’m hungry😊
YES! OK I love eggs, rice, and spinach together. Sounds good.
I love this... and it makes me sad. ❤️ because you are helping people with meal planning on a strict budget... bless you for that. 🙁 that this is truth for many people. Hunger in this country is very real. It’s easy to judge nutritional choices, but this underscores the sad reality that so many people face. Please keep doing these videos and shining your light in a dark place. ✌🏼💚
Thank you for this kind comment. God bless.
@turnip brassica You haven't been exposed to enough struggling people or you haven't had the floor fall out from under you. People don't have to be homeless or elderly to not have food or be food insecure. In addition, not everyone is lucky enough to have a job.
When I was in college pinto beans and black beans kept me alive. I still cook them all the time, there is nothing wrong with some refried beans, you can put them on top of rice or make burritos with them. Black bean soup is also really good.
Beans are great for survival as well as versatile. God bless.
Ohhh yumm..black bean soup 😋
I don't know about you; but at 50 something I look back at my depression era grandmothers and the meals they prepared; beans were a staple! Meat was treated more like a side dish. I've adjusted most of my recipes to cut the amount of meat and add beans. Even canned beans are far cheaper and provide needed protein.
I like making bean soup in the beginning of the week. And the soup will be just beans, onion, garlic, culantro (yes not cilantro it’s not a typo) with salt, pepper, and cumin. After two days of soup I make it into refried beans to eat as pupusas, baleadas, or with just rice. Delicious and filling and with just rice and flour makes a week of variety
when i was in college back in the 80's we were always starving, but we used to get packs of chicken wings for $1.10(before wings became popular)
This is super helpful to me during these times. Lately I’ve started to budget my money and pay of debt I owe. It’s crazy how much money I spend on just food which can go to other things or a saving account. Thank you for these and god bless you and your family!
Stephanie, what lovely feedback. It says a lot about you when you can save money in these tough times. I am glad my food budget videos are useful to you. God bless!
Thank you for making these videos! Luckily I have a decent sized grocery budget but I'm a very frugal person and I hate wasting food and I love saving money. These videos are great! I also feel that we would have a lot less obesity in our society if people are this way.
Amy, I respect frugality a lot. It takes discipline and forethought. Good on you! I also think obesity can be controlled more with careful watching of the $. Thanks for your comment!
Instead of sausage, I would have bought oatmeal and had oatmeal with cinnamon for breakfast and saved the bread and eggs for lunch and dinner. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
Great ideas. Here's a low cost protein idea. Aldi also has ground turkey in a roll similar to the sausage, at about the same price. I mix the turkey with a package of stuffing mix, Aldi brand. Add an egg, some onion, and a tablespoon or two of your tomato paste, or even a generous squirt of ketchup. Toast a few slices of bread and make breadcrumbs, to add if needed. Then make turkey burgers, or even a turkey loaf that tastes like thanksgiving! Lol! We grill the burgers for even more flavor, but you can make it into a loaf and have leftovers for lunch sandwiches. My hubs and I both love it. For pennies each, it provides a big punch of flavor, and lots of protein.
Loni, those are very tasty ideas. I can tell you know how to make things spread. Thank you!
Thankyou😊
Diced tomatoes instead of fresh. Two cartons of eggs. Rice. Lentils. Meat. Flour. Cook rice separately and pour soup over top so it doesn't get mushy over serveral days in the soup. Add lentils to soup for extra protein. Also lentils mixed with egg, green onion flout and rice and shaped into patties and fried . Egg salad for lunch. Egg and sausage for breakfast. Invest i. Flour instead of premade loaves to save enough for butter or cheese next time.
@@susanmathis1682 Thank you! Hope to give helpful info! You could also save the fat from cooking your meat. Use it to scramble your eggs or cook your flour in it and add water to make gravy. Fat has gotten such a bad reputation. But our bodies need good sources of it for so many things!
Coden11 So true about fat! Did some research to put weight on my mom without raising her blood sugar. Fat is concentrated so really helped. Also her blood pressure was always low but got out of control for some reason but this high fat diet has reigned in her BP. Makes you wonder...
Lentils with taco seasoning is yummy in tortillas or taco shells.
Last name first, First name last Great idea!

That sounds delicious!
Taco seasoning yes mega strong and yummy flavor
The frozen isle also has a roll of the ground turkey for $1.99 for a change up
Thanks. I love ground turkey.
That frozen ground turkey has been a life saver for me! I try to keep a few rolls in the freezer.
Donna's Journey they have it for $1 at Walmart!
A whole chicken might have worked for lunch and dinner options. We would roast the chicken use the meat in meals and make soup with the bones.
My mother did that with ham. Make a ham for dinner, Next day leftover ham sandwiches for lunch, then bone and scraps went in a pot of split green pea soup for dinner.
Deana lovellette yes I have actually done that myself for hubby and I. 1st dinner was baked chicken with homemade bread stuffing. Next meal chicken alfredo(jarred alfredo sauce from Aldi @1$) then use bones to make chicken soup
Me too. A roast chicken is the dinner that keeps on giving.
Our local WalMart had roasted chickens for dirt cheap ($3, I believe?)after a certain hour. I'm not sure if it's a common thing, but it would be well worth a later evening shopping trip to find out.
We can eat off of a whole chicken for a week (feeding 3 adults).
Save that $.14 for 11 weeks equals $$1.51. 8oz of cheese goes on sale for $1.50. Use it for flavoring vs mainly nutrition and it could last 3-4 weeks. A very nice treat.
A suggestion for the remaining 16 cents, our Aldi usually has bananas for $.23 a pound so you might be able to get a single banana to cut in half and add to your breakfast for the first two days.
This was fascinating!!! You did a great job. I've been frugal since I was very young. In the early '60's when I was a young teenager, I told my mother that she spent too much money on food. I told her that I could feed our family of three for $10 a week for all three meals, except lunch at work for my father. For every week I did it she gave me $5. I did it for three weeks. I LOVE ALDI and shop there every week.
Debbie, that was very intelligent of you to do in your teens. Many teenagers would be better off today with that kind of wisdom about money. Good on you for your frugality and thank you for watching!
That's interesting about what you did for your family when you were a teenager. So just out of curiosity, what kinds of meals did you come up with for those three weeks on such a low spend amount? Would be interested to know to compare with what you can buy for $10 these days.
@@alwayslearning9272 She's talking about the early 60's. My mother had a grocery budget of $30 a week in late 50's to early 60's and we ate like kings. The prices these days are so bad that you would have to add $100 to that $30 to feed a family of four.
Always learning according to the US Inflation calculator $10 in the 60’s would translate to $70 - $80 today.
We are a family of 4 and while I’ve done that a few times when funds were tight, it was hard and I definitely wasn’t feeling satisfied after meals.
It’s also nearly impossible to do this if anyone has food allergies.
I think this is an amazing service. I’m sure many lives are filled with hope and richness if they are fortunate enough to find this.
When you bought the onions in produce, I noticed that there were mushrooms for 1.29. There are also canned mushrooms for less than a dollar, canned tuna, or any canned meat. Also there is chili hot dog sauce without beans that you can get for less than a dollar. I understand when you said that you would have liked more protein. I think I feel fuller when I eat more protein in my diet. I also can go longer between means, say 4 or 5 hours.
I can’t imagine what a blessing you must be to so many people!
I’ve actually had to do this for a family of four years ago. I took my girls shopping with me and we looked for meals we could make for $2 or less. Spaghetti with meat sauce was a big one along with hot dogs on bread. I was very humbled by this experience and really appreciate all that I have. Thank you for the great ideas!
I understand what you mean by humbling, and I am glad you all got through this time!
I'm impressed. The only thing I would change is to ditch the white rice and buy dried beans, in a bag not a can, instead. You can make a huge pot of beans with a one pound bag, and eat it all week. Much more nutritious than rice.
Great video! ☺
Just for fun I Googled and found the following suggestions:
One 12-count package of frozen biscuits - $1.20
One 48-ounce carton of frozen orange juice - $0.99
One dozen eggs (on sale) - $0.89
Two five-ounce cans of tuna in a pack - $0.69
One pound of 80/20 ground beef (on sale) - $1.09
One 16-ounce bag of rice - $1
Two pounds of dried pinto beans (from the bulk department) - $0.70
One six-pack of ramen noodles - $1.19
One small (1.5 pound) bag of white potatoes - $0.59
One small (four-stick) package of margarine (on sale) - $0.69
One pound of Red Delicious apples - $0.96
My total cost for these items today would have been $9.99.

If you have coworkers who order out Chinese food...ask for the left over packages...I think it has been years since I have bought soy sauce. Sometimes you get cookies too. ;)
These are some really great ideas. The only thing I probably would've done different is cooked all the sausage at first in order to render some fat and save it for cooking the eggs and maybe even frying some of the rice in it to brown it before adding the water.
Good options, Carrie!
That's what I do with bacon. Fry it pour off excess and fry eggs. Then put pan in frig (let cool or put on hot pad). Next use it will still have bacon grease residue in it. If you save excess grease in freezer, you can add it back as needed.
I like Aldi. We have many of these stores in Germany and I’m a vegetarian 🌱 and they have the best quality of fruits and veggies. The stuff gets delivered 2 times a day so it’s the freshest. I love it.
You might only be spending $10.00 on your food but your meals always look so delicious! ❤
I like to boil a whole chicken. Then I pick off all the meat into individual baggies and freeze a few. Then I add vegetables to the chicken water to make a hearty soup. Divide it up into servings and put some into the freezer. Don’t put the chicken in the soup. Use it for sandwiches or in rice dishes. You can also boil chicken parts if they are cheaper instead of a whole chicken.
I would’ve added chicken drumsticks and removed the sausage. I love this series btw. Keep these videos coming.
Sounds good but lots of waste on chicken (unless it is super cheap, then it is a break from ground meat). I would not be surprised if the bones are half the weight of the chicken! At least with ground turkey or pork, there is no waste at all.
@@lakelassie934we use whole chicken legs that have the thighs attached. After they are roasted we use the bones and skin to make broth for soups and casseroles.
Can you do an $80 monthly challenge for one person?
god bless you take care
80.00 one person 🤔 I am not her but I would suggest if you have a Save a lot store in your city buy your can goods from them most of the can product are under 75 cent. If you do not have a Save a lot how about a dollar tree store that has groceries. I would also suggest if you have Food Lion search for non name brand products pastas are in an orange box and it's about a dollar the bread in an orange wrapping is under a dollar. With Dollar tree I would never suggest a person buy frozen meats like chicken or beef from them.

This extreme grocery budget series is great. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us. I would like to see what you come up with for vegan whole food plant based extreme budget on $10 for one week.
I loved how you made your “fried eggs” I’m totally going to try that tomorrow morning! On the leftover bread you could make toast and eat it with your dinner soup. Or croutons.
I think I would have tried to find some .99 cent bags of frozen veggies to add to the soup. Almost 25 percent of the budget was oranges.
I love these videos. Personally, I’d do tortillas instead of wheat bread, and beans and bananas instead of the oranges.
I was thinking the same thing about the tortillas....$.99. She could have the egg, sausage in the tortillas for breakfast.
This is the second video, of hers, that I’ve seen. She actually did just what you suggested in the first video. I imagine she changed it / mixed it up so as not to eat the exact same foods each week.
When you go to Aldi's, remember your reusable bags and a quarter for the shopping cart. The carts are locked together so they are not scattered through the parking lot. You get your quarter back when you relock the cart. They charge for bags.
this is impressive. I've been binge watching millenial money, their monthly food budget is normally around $500. watching your video is refreshing. I don't get why a lot of people complain that healthy eating is expensive, you may lack protein but this is much better than eating fastfood.
I don’t know how you think up these great meals for only $10 a week!! I too would have added cheese! Maybe potatoes! But of course that would be much less balanced than what you did. Fantastic job! I really enjoy these videos. I hope you all are doing well. We’re experiencing some setbacks and I am going to be very budget conscious in the upcoming year. Keep these great ideas coming!
Lauren, I'm wanting that cheese right now! That would have added dairy in, to be more balanced. I hope your setbacks aren't too bad or long-lasting. Prosperity to you and your family! XOXO
Great video. Not only the $ amount spent, the ideas are a stress relief for those already struggling. Also if you had the pot and place to cook it, make you're own bread (just 1/2 a package of yeast, pinch of salt, and cup and a half of flour). Up front may cost $2.99 for flour and yeast versus .99 for the bread but gives you a whole month, and leftover flour
Thank you for watching my videos and for adding your tip in the comments for my viewers.
I would get a very large bag of cheap russet potatoes on sale
Usually 1.99 for 10 lbs
Steamed potatoes are more nutritious then boiled and take no oil, tho a little salt and butter goes a long way to making them a treat
Growing up we had ground meat, potato and onion casserole! I still like it.
Very smart. Potatoes are awesome for cheap eating
Potatoes are so versatile! You can chop them up and coat them in a tiny amount of oil and/or with rosemary, garlic powder, or Italian seasoning if you've got them and bake them for roasted potatoes. You can boil and mash them up (maybe with some butter) for mashed potatoes and then take THAT with a little flour and eggs make them into pierogies , gnocchi, or latkes very easily and cheaply. You can microwave and mash them up into some milk with a little garlic powder and/or cheddar to make a quick and easy potato soup. You can combine them with scrambled eggs and/or beans in a tortilla for a filling burrito. Potatoes are the heroes of the pantry lol
I needed this video. Came across this for some ideas. My husband is a disabled Veteran and we're going thru his heart wrenching appeals process. Please send us good vibes and prayers 🙏. We're having it hard. I made Five Bean Soup Tonight with chili mix and served it with Biscuits. And been doing other good recipes on our tight budget. Thank you so much for your ideas
MINIGIRL007 H, Thank you for this heartfelt comment and for your husband's service. I will keep you both in my prayers. I hope to see you on my channel in the future.
Mmmm I always love tomato sandwiches with mayo. Fried egg would also be lovely with this 😍 or egg salad with those green onions... and black pepper
I’m a vegan over 10 years now and a minimalist, and enjoyed your video, l enjoy beans and rice and do green smoothie l keep my budget about $20 a week for food and buy things that are on sale, in these times many people are hurting bad and low on money and one has to become creative in order to survive. Thank you for sharing your time and recipes with us. 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
That is a great budget, Lourdes. Thank you for your comment!
These meals are very creative, although super low in calories and protein, as you mentioned. I think I would buy a couple of chicken leg quarters instead of the sausage. I can get a package of two chicken leg quarters for the same price as that sausage. Since they weigh about a pound each, that would provide more protein and calories for the money. I have a sourdough starter, so I would buy flour to make bread, although I know that isn't something everyone is familiar with or has access to), and that way I could have multiple loaves of bread for the week, so I would probably skip the rice and just dip my bread in the soup, etc. Skipping the rice would hopefully free up enough money for a small package of cheese, depending on the store.
Hi Angie. I like your ideas. I looked for deals in there on chicken. They didn't have a low-cost pack of chicken. In this way I like my normal supermarket better, though they don't always have it either. They are cheaper than Aldi in some ways. Doing a monthly haul I'd definitely go for something like that.
@@TheQuaintHousewife Yeah, I only know of one store that has that small package option. We don't have Aldi where I live, so I couldn't get such cheap eggs, green onions, etc. but I love to get chicken on the bone and then make broth from the bones afterward. Monthly shopping would definitely make things easier, but I agree with your idea of going to a food bank if you're really this low on money.
Yeah. 5 lbs of flour is about $1.20 = 6 loaves of bread. 3 packs of yeast are .79 ...half pack is enough for 2 loaves made at same time.
Beans and rice are cheap.
I said the same thing about the leg quarters, there are lots of ways to fix it deliciously!
Nobody really seems to understand the struggle... after I pay my cell phone and put gas in the car to get to work and back sometimes I’m really left pocket change to try and feed myself and my daughter. You are an inspiration. The meals don’t have to be glamorous just filling. 20/25$ a week for food is tough for 2 people. So THANK YOU for showing me how to maximize my money. Can’t wait to see more vids
I appreciate your viewership, Aaron. Best wishes for an easier food budget for you both!
I would not have bought a two lb. package of rice, or quite so large package of oranges. I'd opt for a one pound package of rice so I could afford a small bell pepper, to add to the fruit and veggies. A box of pasta would have been a good choice, as well. I probably would have chosen a sack of flour, so I could bake biscuits, pancakes, waffles, or sour dough bread. Could have used half the paste, half the sausage and fat, and some veg, to prepare a Bolognese sauce. The other half of both the sausage and paste, along with the veg and a small amount of rice, could have made a very nice soup. You'd still need the addition of a small amount of milk and sugar to pull this off. Perhaps extending what you can afford with what you might get at the town food pantry or local church. You had so much left over bread ; Home made croutons, mixed with those awesome fresh tomatoes and scallions, would make a delicious salad. Bread crumbs, stuffing and bread pudding would be how I'd use the rest.
Great alternatives. Thanks, Jeanette!
Flour would definitely be the first thing on my list for a super low budget challenge - great ideas!
Really good suggestions here, you obviously have some creative skills when it comes to cooking! :)
I thought she did quite well with what she had to spend, and no matter how you choose to spend it there will always be things that others would swap out for something else depending on personal preference.
I would want more greens of some kind, and most people aren't going to be able score a carton of eggs for only 49c!! But the lack of dairy was apparent to me also, but like I said before she did well considering what she had to work with and it's near impossible to cover all of the food groups when you are only working with such a small amount of money.
Big Wheel is that white or brown rice?
Those are options you might be able to find at other stores; however, Aldi has very limited stock. That might have been the only size bag of rice they sold. Also, they do not sell fruits or vegetables individually. One has to buy the bags Aldi has put together.
Back in the 70's I rented a small house near the base so my wife could join me. With that big pay check from the military I was able to spend $50 a month to feed the both of us. I would buy a large center cut ham and have it sliced into 16 or so slices that would each feed two people. A few pounds of cheap hamburger meat, a large bag of rice, dried beans, a few fresh greens and other vegetables, oatmeal, cereal, milk, potatoes, perhaps a couple of chickens or whatever I could buy with the $50 dollars. By the end of the month we were down to ham or hamburger and beans every nite but we never ran out of food or went hungry. Today I eat a low carb diet and your suggestions don't work for me. I do eat eggs for breakfast almost every day along with bacon or ham or sausage. No breads but the occasional low carb tortilla to make a roll up or dinner taco. I buy family packs of meat and divide them up into two serving packets and then vacuum seal and freeze. I buy frozen vegetables, canned and fresh for each week. The frozen have the least waste as long as you only cook the amount you intend to eat. A whole chicken ($6) will provide an easy two or three meals for two people.
Is skip the big bag of mandarins n buy dry bean mix or a can of mixed beans then with left over $ buy couple fruits.
Your beans would add more bulk, fibre n proteins.
You guys are so lucky to get such cheap prices over there.
Struggled for a while when I was out of work, and for anyone struggling: a lentil potato curry on rice goes pretty far. If you pick up curry paste I think it's only $3-4 dollars for a container or so, for something that you usually use about a teaspoon of at a time. Cook up some dried lentils or chickpeas, cut up a potato and add it, cook it all in water with some tomato paste if you have it and the curry paste. It's tasty and it goes FOREVER. That, and you can do a lot with eggs, pinto beans, tortillas, and cheese.
I'm also part German and one thing we do: get a container of cider vinegar, a cabbage, a couple onions, potatoes, and sausage of some kind. Cook it all up together with a dash of vinegar and salt and pepper. Super tasty, very filling, and insanely cheap.
If you have ground meat you can always use extra bread or oats to stretch it if you really need to. I remember my mom doing that a lot.
Hi Elizabeth. That sounds delicious. In my newest budget challenge video for Whole Foods I make a curried split pea stew. I too am part German-American. I love German foods but I would probably gain so much weight if I ate many of the recipes I like. Meat spread with the carbohydrates is a great stretcher. Thank you for commenting.
if you had a $15 budget , you could have bought some cheese, milk ,soy sauce, sugar and Sr flour and butter. Then with your eggs you could have made scones or pancakes or basic cookies. They would be great for breakfast, lunch and after dinner dessert if you were still hungry. i loved what you did buy for $10. its a great help for people that need to budget in times of hardship. It would be impossible to get eggs for 49 c in Australia so its a little more challenging here. Food in America seems to be so much cheaper than in Australia.Loved your video. Anyone that helps others is from the heart.
$10 can stretch far in Aldi. I love that place!
I would have bought less rice and added dried beans. But kudos on the scallions. They are my go to for flavor on a budget.
I remember one summer when I was really broke and going to Aldi and getting a lot of food for $15.00. That place is a blessing.
Glad you made it through okay!
"food scissors" lol I think they're called kitchen shears, but I'm gonna cal em food scissors from now on, I mean, you're not wrong XD
Ty so much for this!! I was just telling my husband abt this video. We want to try & save $$$ for a few months and def are gonna try this. This is a store that we just started going to & I couldn't get over the prices. I hate wasting money. Even though we have it, I still don't wanna spend it. You are a lifesaver and I love your channel. I'm telling my 500 plus fb and my husband is as well. You are a genius and a blessing ty from a grateful mama in Delaware!!
One dozen large eggs for .49? Nice..
Our aldi had a super sale on them and it was still $1.10 a dozen. My area is just a lot more expensive. My guess is that this might be the midwest...
Still, not bad for those on a budget
Love watching your videos :) I’m a college student and my friends always complain about being broke (they eat out every day!) but are always jealous of everything I’m cooking! Saves me so much money and makes me feel better too☺️ Eggs are a must .
Thank you, and you are smart!
I would have added beans. Beans and rice are a complete protein. I suspect that is not what you meant, but if someone was going to continue this for some time it is helpful to know. Thank you for sharing.
I think here in America people are so used to getting whatever they want and you have shown your viewers a more humble way to be with buying food. I love it and I have used it with our family also. When times are hard, what will you do right? I tend to thrive in survival mode.
This is a lovely note. Thank you.
The Quaint Housewife you are very welcome
Wow, I clicked on this to see the prices in the U.S.A.
I'm in New Zealand and food is very expensive here.
1 doz eggs here cost $4.80 so that would be half your budget! The tomatoes would have been approx $6 for the bag, same with the mandarins.
Very jealous!
I live in Canada, and I agree with the difference in food prices.
I just did my grocery shopping today - the same items would have cost me a little over $30.
I do love the challenge and enjoy seeing what others can do on a very tight budget.
Same in Australia! Can't believe how little things cost in the US
I live in the US too, in an area where prices are relatively cheap. I was at Aldi's today, and my prices were quite a bit higher haha. But excellent ideas for eating well for as little money as possible!
I live in Australia our food costs quite a bit more than what you were able to buy for 10.00 we would need 30.00 for the same list , but to us 30.00 is a cheap weeks food well done
These are just prices at Aldi. A dozen eggs at most stores would be at least $2. $4.80 for a dozen would be $3.19 USD which is about average 😊
I absolutely LOVE Aldi. It's about a 30 min drive from where I live, but, worth the trip every time. Hoping to get one closer one of these days.
Great stuff!! Once again, thank you so much!! 😊
save the green onion ends to grow more onions.
Thank you for this my family is struggling so bad 😩 I’m just trying to feed my 3 babies I don’t care about me as long as they are fed mama can sleep at night ❤️...
@Appleand Olive You are a good-hearted mother. I wish you weren't going through this right now. Are you able to sign up for food stamps? If you are very low income you can get them within 7 days of your application being processed. Otherwise it is a 30 day waiting period. XOXO
A lot of people forget corn meal. Corn mush is cheap, easy, delicious, and filling. Add a spoon full of brown sugar and you got something good!
Your eggs in EVERY video are perfect......no matter how you cook them. Thanks for teaching me!
Thank you, Susan!
I love this. I found you via 'She Won Everything'. I'm in Ireland so products and prices are different but the principle is the same! Thank you :-)
Hi Hilary. I hear you have Aldi in Ireland. Thank you for watching my video.
Would be very cool if you did the $10 challenge but buying only vegan foods.
She did. All she would need to do is swap the suasage and eggs for beans or sone other fruit.
@@sansaviera yup to beans lol as said many times
I love Aldi’s. I paid for an entire Thanksgiving dinner with just $40.00. It’s not your 10 dollar challenge but I got a lot of stuff for Thanksgiving. I’m going to do the same for Christmas and probably New Year.
$40 is great for meat and fixins! Good on you! XOXO.
The Quaint Housewife Yeah !!!! I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your ideas and life with us. ❤️🙏🏻
We did thanksgiving for 20
We made Thanksgiving dinner for four from Aldis for $12!! real turkey breast with gravy $7, smallbag potatoes 1.50, stuffing mix .89, can green beans .40, ice cream 1.95
WOWZERS you are a hero. Most people wouldn’t even think this is possible to eat this CHEAP. Especially since most went thru the Sbux drive-thru today and spent $8 WHOLE DOLLARS on a latte.
Thank you, Cake!
When You fry the first part of the sausage, save the grease-let it cool-refrigerate. then use it in fried rice recipe.
I am trying to save to buy a house and I love videos like these. Every little bit counts!
K, what a great and life-changing goal. Best wishes!
I like how you talked about the nutritional aspects of the food you were purchasing and that they were items that you can actually make decent meals out of. I agree with some of the other comments about the beans but maybe you already had that the previous week. I am currently doing $20 a week but you have inspired me to try $10.
Hi Katwanya, I think beans would be great too. I tried to be a little different this time because I did beans in my "How to Eat for $10 a Week" video at Walmart. But they are a reliable and nutritious filler for sure. Your $20 budget is great too! Thanks for commenting.
The Quaint Housewife I like the idea of 20.00 for a week as well.
In Ireland: half gallon milk €2 Scallions 49c Green pepper 65c Tomato paste 39c Jar of pasta sauce 89c Bananas (2lb) €1.20 Fruit Bran Cereal 89c Rice 99c Eggs 1.50 Garlic powder 39c Italian seasoning 39c Pack of cheddar cheese €1.29 We also have a store like Walmart that does a rolling offer of spend €50 get €10 off each time. Great video. Love reading the comments. Very interesting to read price differences. I left this comment on your Walmart video.
I would have added pinto beans or lentils if possible -- maybe buy a pound of rice and a pound of beans or lentils in order to achieve this. You could have fried a very little of your sausage and then fried your rice in the fat from that to make your fried rice a bit more savory. I learned a lot from your video, thank you.
Good job on hitting your weekly budget using basic standard food choices. I now mindfully try to eat very low carbohydrates (less than 20 - 30 grams daily) and very low to no sugar (select fruit or berries only) and learning how to stay close to a KETO menu as much as possible. So I would have replaced the bread, oranges & rice (about $6) with another bag of tomatoes, another dozen eggs, 2 cucumbers, 1 can of tuna, 1 pkg pork chorizo and (1 lemon (drink) or 1 grapefruit (slices) (about $6.00) All the best :)
Love the shallow cooking method for eggs.
Great ideas. Remember if you live in the US and are pregnant or have a child 5 or younger in your home you may qualify for the WIC program. The income limits are much higher than those needed for SNAP (food stamps).
Awesome video. I do look forward to your uploads. In my region fresh green cabbage is cheap. It goes such a long way when you shred it up. Also a couple of bulk carrots shredded up. Sometimes chicken drumsticks are a good deal as well. Tinned mackerel is good for protein .
I love all of the foods you mentioned. Thank you, Orly.
Save your leftover vegetables during the week in one bag, leftover chicken in one bag, left over beef in another. When they are full then make a pot pie or soup.
Condiments such as ketchup mustard relish hot sauce soy sauce salt pepper sugar packets can be picked up at fast food spots malls with fast food targets and walmarts. Anywhere food stalls are located. If you live near a Costco you don't need a membership to enter just tell them you are going to the pharmacy and then walk around eating all the samples they give. Great free lunch Great video for those struggling
I heard about those Costco samples. That sounds like a clever way to eat. XOXO.
College student here! This definitely helped. Thank you.
Thank you, Danni! Hope finals went well!
I just enjoy watching these videos your audio is good ...im glad you made another one of these 10$ videos. No-one elce is doing these
Thank you. We have three cats ourselves. XOXO.
