    Guild Wars 2 pulled off a Time Mage in Chronomancer, Where you could mainuplate your cooldowns by a buff that speed up times around you lowering the timer faster.
    You also had a move called Continum spilt where it takes a snapshot of your character then for 6-7 secs you can use of your any skills for free, normally powerful ones.
    Then after 6-7 secs it'll snap you back to that place, and your cooldowns you had before used the move effectively giving you a double burst rotation.
    Time Mage can work in an MMO, you just have to get creative with it. Base it off the player actions and skills rather than the environment.

    • @TheCrazyhusky
      @TheCrazyhusky 6 месяцев назад

      To add to my comment, There is a lot you can do with Time mage, Warp as a spacing tool to warp to somewhere.
      Haste to speed up you own cooldown timer. Use Stop as a boon to freeze the timer on Allies boons for 5 secs giving them longer durations.
      Quick to instant a spell without a Cooldown, Comet, Gravity and Metor as offensive spells. Could make X-zone an AoE damage over time field. These are examples.

      And while I love it, I have to be honest: It's unlikely to happen. Ff14 loves their set rotation too much. So much so that they got rid of Spellhaste buffs so allies didn't "drift" at all. It's just the nature of those game at this point.
      Some ideas can work, some cannot. I can see a Time Battlemage as a concept, filling in some of the ally-based buffs for a crossbow, but even then I'm unsure if 14 would do it.

      @@TheCrazyhusky Problem is it wouldnt work in FF14 because of how limited and ridged design has to be around jobs and fights. Its been my biggest complaint about FF14 coming from FF11 where every job was completely unique and had its own niche but were extremely powerful in those niches. FF14 is so watered down atm that the devs cant do anything like time mage because it would completely break the design philosophy of how fights work.

    Astrologian used to be Time Mage before Shadowbringers, with Time Dilation and the old version of the Arrow card which was a haste buff. Right now the only trace of their old time manipulation power is Lightspeed. Given how rigid timings and rotations are now becoming, I don't foresee any return of time manipulating skills any time soon.

    I still think Songstress/Aria would be a fun addition to the healer roster.
    On GCDs its kit plays like picto or bard: building bar or gauge that increases the class’s own healing output based on thresholds and burst heal actions similar to whm but with a lingering short buffs when cast: Lvl 1 dmg mitigation, lvl 2 regen, lvl 3 attk up
    OCDs could be very similar to DNC technical step but with NIN’s ninjutsu variation for what “Melodic harmony” is executed
    The main characteristic for this class which could set it apart is that it’s a mob/single target debuffer - a more offensive/controller healer with debilitations like attk down, critical resistance down, defense down.
    The engagement for the class could be in notes/step that string together to builds meter and on how many steps are executed.
    While it still would have personality in adding a few buffs to party members, I think it’s main tactical priority is keeping or swapping debuffs and dots on enemies making it more a deliberate controller on the battlefield.
    Weapon could be a hovering microphone. Something similar to a character from the mobile game Dislyte- I think her name is Celine/Selene

      I'm still of a mind that Geomancer would work well as the FFXIV analog to WoW's Elemental Shaman - placing elemental buffs for the party and to aim the already present aether to get the best damaging effects from the environs. Technically all areas have a measure of all aether types, but it stands to reason that aspected areas would necessitate multiple buffs to make the element you need in an area strong enough for use. Trying to use fire against Ifrit's obviously a non-starter, but a geomancer would drop a debuff glyph that reduces fire damage, then a water shrine/circle to boost water, adding earth for extra effectiveness, and rather than needing to have a huge assortment of individually cast spells, they would begin channeling/ringing their casting bell to move the aether, the damage continuing as long as the shrines/glyphs last. The need to reapply elemental effects would be the focus for a location based not-DoT class, so maybe add a bit of Affliction Warlock feel for spice?
      Ramping up would be a measure of placing a glyph and going for the channeling right away, or working in more glyphs to layer up the buffs or damage effects, but essentially the damage doesn't start until the bell ringing begins.

    Time mage: healer role
    Featured character: g’raha Tia
    Weapon: big hourglass
    Kit/ lore: uses forbidden time magics to halt, slow or rewind damage of target or party. This job can also cast essentially a bloodlust (WoW reference) which increases the haste and of the group’s attacks while also lowering their gcd a bit.
    We wouldn’t be able to make them ungodly broken. They would need to have limitations lore-wise, like a summoner. Time magic is a very delicate manipulation of aether that takes a life-“time” to master, which (spoiler) g’raha has already done once in another life. He learns the art through the crystal tower, which is where the WoL will also learn the job. I'm sad about the "no whips" thing. I've been wanting a mid-range whip class like Ivy from Soul Caliber since the games inception. It's also really weird to me that he said it's hard to make unique and different designs. I can think of at least a dozen cool designs right now.
    Have the whip be a chain, have it look like a piece of ivy with roses and thorns all down it, have the whip be on fire down the length of the rope, add spikes to the rope of the whip, have a classic Indiana Jones rope whip, do a bright red leather braided cord whip, do a whip that when put away just looks like a cowboy lasso and has no handle. Have a water element whip where it's all blue and splashes of water come off it when you fling it around. Do a whip that looks like it's made of liquid metal - all shiny chrome even down the length of the rope even though it's still flexible... and all of this doesn't even mention how creative you could get with the handles at the top of the whip. If you can be creative with sword handles, you can be creative with whip handles. TBH, I could go on for ages, and I can clearly see how each suggested design would look. So I'm baffled by the "how do you customize it?" Statement.
    The only thing he said that I sympathize with/understand is how flexible whips are and how much they flow and move and could therefore be hard to animate, but seeing some of the insane weapon effects in the game, I feel like it could be done.

    New Job: Necromancer.
    Rather than a dark evil art it is actually a promotion of balance and bringing closure to the dead. They can call wandering spirits for attacks so they can vent their anger allowing them to let go of their violent nature. They call spirits like the ones we fought in the aitiascope dungeon. They also give party support by calling helpful spirits who have lingering desires to help others. Job quests could include calming spirits so they don't turn into evil undead like Yuna's sending ritual in FFX. They could even be a true pet class by having a particular guardian spirit who joins you to solve unfinished business. The pet could be either offensive or defensive allowing the Necromancer to take the other role.

      @AzureGreatheart I mean, that's my point. Slow/heavy/stop/stun any kind of debuff doesn't work with FFXIV encounter design. So a Time Mage and it's identity as a playable job fantasy doesn't fit. Time Mage is a job about manipulation, while boss encountered are a set series of scripted actions, SE is simply better off designing something else than try to make Timr Mage a thing.

  • @00031849

    Saying that timemage doesn't fit an mmo is just the easy answer but it is just a design problem.
    You can make a dps that has two modes, just like BLM where each is used for different reasons, or even make a mode better than the other. The timemage can use skills to hasten or slow down the modes depending on the situation. You can even make it so that he has a single target and aoe modes with like 30s timers, and both being mandatory so the player would want to hasten the aoe mode and slow down the single target mode when doing a boss battle for example. You could have the two modes have other perks as well, and a good timemage would need to optimize his time on the preferred mode for the situation (and if haste/slow is on CD, stop/quicken could be the longer cds that we can use for similar reasons).
    You could have mitigations for the party that slows down damage and turns it into dots, and make haste/quicken versions that make regens faster or even heal instantaneously. The time manipulation aspect of GCDs and cooldowns need to be kept on the time mage itself and built in it`s rotation for balancing reasons, but the flavor can still be there. Heck, you can even have the time mage have a skill that reduces the CD of a skill by X seconds and have it choose which skill to have the CD reduced, like an AoE|single target skill, healing|mitigation and so on (just dont make it choose between damage and support, so we don`t have an energy drain kind of issue).
    This is just to name a few possibilities that can easily fit an mmo environment

    • @MahalGC
      @MahalGC 6 месяцев назад

      If reducing GCDs and cool downs is too broken (like quickness & alacrity in Guild Wars 2, and how there's a literal CHRONOMANCER in it), then I could see a design space where they instead increase the length and intensity of buffs and debuffs on both enemies and allies, but I guess we will only see traces of time magic in many jobs instead of being one job's entire identity.

  • @charlesedwinbooks
    @charlesedwinbooks 6 месяцев назад

    I hear the answer but there could be subtle work arounds.
    Stop could literally just act as a stun and only let it last for 2-4 seconds.
    Slow could work as its in the game now, or, work like heavy. (i prefer the heavy route personally)
    Haste could be on a GCD of 120 seconds and make it so everyones skills recharge more quickly and casting time is reduced. Or make it like bards pelaton, or honestly 2 different abilities doing both of these things.
    LBs could literally be Stop, Stopra, Stopga and their mechanic is the boss is frozen for x amount of time and all damage done in that time frame is 1.5x from everyone.
    Could bring back goofy status stuff like "age"
    While giving it basic spells like ruin and such.

      The grappler I also can’t see being done easily. What would their weapon be? If it’s just hand wraps…. That severely limits design unless you plan on never letting people dye it… you have to remember that they design with the idea that you can tell what the job it by the weapon at a glance. (Glamour and hide weapon non withstanding. It is a choice to hide it at that point) It’s not always done but overall they seem to follow that design structure.

Hasting and slowing effects can't be anything significant of course but they have been in the game before and mostly stripped back out of it again. While you can't have effects that change speed for others, they could have ones that only affect the person using them. For instance, when they inevitably add the next Tank job imagine if their Invuln is just Stop. They can't take damage for a handful of seconds, but they also can't move. Could give it a bit of flavor by having it build up for a massive attack that can be used after it ends. Like all that damage they just got hit by is reflected back on the attacker.

    I don't think the well of classic jobs is completely dry of jobs that would be able to have their job identity properly translated into FF14's systems. I can probably name one for each role.
    Tank: Defender - great shields : although this does crib a bit into Paladin's job identity, i think that pulling from this Bangaa job and giving it a bit of Goofy flavor from Kingdom Hearts could really work as a tank who is the master of mitigation
    Healer: Chemist - crossbow : take inspiration from the Apothecary from Octopath Traveler and flavor the pure heals and DoTs as something similar to how cartridges work for gunbreaker where you can mix/match the darts to create specific effects.
    Melee DPS: Master - Nunchaku : this callback to FF3 and FF1 has plenty of ways to differentiate itself from Monk in job design while highlighting a different form of martial arts. Probably leans more into the support end of things to give striking a range from Greed DPS to support DPS.
    Phys Ranged: cannoneer - Mortar/Bazooka : The master of AoE damage with slower GCDs that make way for a job that's built on double weaving; a direct answer to MCH's high APM playstyle.
    Magical Ranged: Illusionist - (get inventive,, but probably something like a mirror or a crystal ball) A job that's aobut ground-target AoEs that apply effects to the enemy rather than to allies. keeping mobs and raid bosses in their phantasmal illusions is key to the job. If Combat rez is still around when we get to Illusionist, it ends up being the job with a reraise style effect that only applies for a scant few seconds, so ideally it gets cast on someone who is clearly about to eat shit.

    People need to understand that the concept of time mage doesn't fit this MMORPG tab target system.
    Haste as a buff or slow as a debuff on raid, alliance enviroinment is not happening. Remember when players used to complain on how Arrow card worked? "Stop using it on me! You're desaligning my rotation!". Players do have short memory.
    It's good that the devs don't always implement players ideas, because most of the time players don't know how bad their change for the game would be.
    Not only that, FF14 is SE golden goose as of now. Drastic changes will not happen because it could screw their revenue.
    What I would love to see is the development of new online full action FF, something like PSO2NGS. That way more classes archetypes could be delivered without lossing it's essence, like DK in FF14.

      Slowing bosses could just reduce their auto-attacks for 15 seconds while reducing physical damage by 10%/magical by 5%
      Demi/Gravija could be their single/aoe attack.
      Time Slip could be their DOT.
      Their 2 minute skill could be "Quick", eliminates cast times for all players for 20 seconds and increases damage by 5%, ally GCDs used in this 20s window generate a resource the Time Mage can use to instant-cast OGCD meteor-strike spells up to 5 times.
      Then they get a healer kit with heals, regens, and maybe some gravity-themeds light shielding.

      Sorry, but it's been used in other MMOs to great success. It's about execution.
      In ff14, we know manipulating GCDs for allies is bad. That's how the game is built amd should NOT be fixed. Instead, design Time Mage to use time themed abilities to manipulate their OWN haste and CDs. One example is a Haste to accelerate the use of their casts, one cast that is too long to use without a specific buff, Slow and Stop can be used to "delay" effects for combos, and their party buff can be the generic % Boost but with a Meteor that 'remembers' some of that damage and applies it when the buff ends.
      It's all about execution. Do it right and it's a blast without being problematic. The REAL issue is ASTRO already has a lot of those themes. Like how a Druid would step on the toes of a WHM right now.

    Not gonna lie, although yoshi P’s reason is a bit understandable. There’s so many creative ways to implement time mage. It doesnt have to be something that will affect party members. It can just be something that can buff itself with haste, so casting time for the job’s big damage spells can be casted quickly. And being creative with slow spells, maybe it can be applied to enemies as a mitigation. The job can also use haste to have effects like expedience while in battle. There’s so many things that can be applied to mmo without losing its core identity. Yoshi P’s reason is so strict about its identity when most of the traditional jobs in the game we have somewhat broke away from their tradition. Look at dark knight as an example. Where is the ability to increase damage in exchange of hp?lol. Wasnt that also the core identity of an ff dark knight?

      That's just the thing, they have no idea how to do that. Unless u make time mage a healer that has a haste buff which players who like to optimize would probably hate since it would throw your rotations out of whack. Or it wouldn't have any time abilities and would just be a regular caster/healer with skill names based on time related things.

Time stop could just be AoE stuns like holy, which wouldn't be OP because it would share diminishing returns with other stuns. And most of the soeed manipulation stuff could have been personal; maybe have a hasted chain that fast and more maneuverable, and a slower, more deliberate phase that's more akin to black mage. • @raarsi-dar
    @raarsi-dar 6 месяцев назад +3

    When you think of Time Mage in something like a co-op action or MMORPG game, the abilities would boil down to four different types of properties: acceleration, deceleration, reversion and stopping. Ironically, Astrologian had all four of those properties at one point in the form of attack/cast speed cards (acceleration), the Stella spell that lowered the target's attack speed (deceleration), Diurnal Stance which lead to the hots from the Aspected spells it has today (reversion) and the Celestial Opposition ability used to come with a stun that lasted a max of five seconds while also increasing the duration of any buffs they applied to itself and allies by five seconds, making it about as close to a localized time stop as is mechanically possible in a real time multiplayer scenario. So when Yoshi-P mentions that something like Time Mage isn't possible, it tells me that he's either forgotten how Astrologian used to work back in the day or that he's not able to adequately explain how you can only do so much with those four components required of something like a Time Mage job.

    • @DrakeWurrum
      @DrakeWurrum 6 месяцев назад +1

      It tells me that Yoshi-P himself is not very good at creative rotation design.
      Time Mage *could* work if their magic explicitly applied to themselves and targets in specific ways that already DO work within the combat system we have. For example: Time Mage using time magic to increase/decrease cooldowns on other important spells. A temporary phase removing cast times from spells. Damage that is delayed to happen later, whether to self or target. "Predicting" spells/damage that will happen later - and either guaranteeing or preventing them.
      I mean, yes, that all fits in just fine to AST, but I'm seeing a lack of creativity more than forgetfulness.

    I disagree with his rationale on Time Mage as it's not an answer that speaks to the creative use of time magic in fights in FFXIV. It's been used for manipulation of cooldowns through the Haste stat in Eureka, the manipulation of buff/debuff durations in several boss fights as well as Astrologian's original toolkit, and more. Time Mage can get really creative in an MMO space. Time Mage doesn't have to be a literal port from the single player games. Red Mage isn't and it's doing quite well for itself!
    I don't say this to exclaim Yoshi-P is being intentionally malicious or anything of the sort, obviously. But I do feel like the reason is way more technical than the reason he gave.
