  • 34 minute overview of the philosophy of history from a Christian perspective, from the notion of Herodotus as "father of history" to von Ranke and Troeltsch to myths of progress and linear views of history, ending with some very quick thoughts of a Christian perspective on history.

Regarding Ranke, according to Iggers, the former said that the task of the historian is to relate "essentially" what happened. That seems to be a better translation of the German word in question. Moreover, Ranke did liken the reconstruction of past events to "art" and "poetry" - thereby acknowledging that you cannot just reproduce past events in their totality but that you're using your creativity to fill in the blanks.

Thank you for the video it got me thinking... In the video the speaker says something that waters down to, ( it is more practical for historians to write about more relatively current events compared to past ones, because they'll be easier to get information on.) I was reminded of a thing I learned while reading the magic of reality that was, (once a story whether mainly true or not is told or recorded in different variations for enough time the actual original meaning is often some what lost as well as the facts skewed.) For example I don't believe the Noah's Arc story but there are a few different variations of that story all of which probably have some shared parts and a lot of missed meaning perhaps.

Don’t know if you’re still active on here, but it’d be cool to see a video like this with an emphasis on the history of philosophy as it was viewed in the early 20th century, which was characterized by a dialectic between historians over whether history was about human progress or a cycle of echoing events (like Spengler and Toynbee).

Could you follow your own advice and try to be a little less biased? Calling Marx's views "preposterous" is unnecessary and in fact it is your view of his meaning that is incredibly simplistic. You should be a little more respectful of views that may appear strange to you - particularly as a religious person. Shame, because you made some reasonable points when you kept your beliefs out of it.

+Ed O'Meara Fair enough. You might imagine though, that I gain brownie points in my environment by trashing Marx. I get to push some envelopes in other areas by using Marx as a scapegoat. :-)

You know people who've witnessed resurrections? Listened to you talk for 20 minutes about history to find you believe this, what a waste of time.

genetic fallacy - If I give faulty information at one point says nothing in itself of whether the information is accurate at other points. Besides, there are people who sincerely claim to have witnesses resurrections. They may be wrong, but that is also true information.

@@kenschenck Yes if you give faulty information it doesn't mean that every bit of information you have given has to be wrong. But, if you are willing to believe something which is so obviously false then it certainly demonstrates that your judgement when it comes to evaluating the truth of sources is at best impaired and it would probably be unwise to learn from you as a teacher on the subject on which you are lecturing. Hence why I feel 20 minutes of my life to have been wasted.
As to your second point, they are wrong.

Hey, pal. You should read Toynbee and Spengler. They’ll blow your Marxian conceptions of history right out of your ass.
