I wanted a 4th gen 4runner limited ever since I drove my pop's...until I test drove a Honda Pilot 2012 EX-L w/ nav. seats, driving position, ergonomics, ride, interface, just couldn't be better. it's perfection. there's a reason it's called a "Pilot". you feel like one. very special driving experience. certainly won't outperform the other off road SUV's, but I'm a city guy with a small family. this thing makes more sense for the money
Excellent idea ... sitting in the 3rd row and using the 2nd row folded down as a foot rest. Great review. Love the Pilot. Pretty close to a perfect all around vehicle. I have an almost identical one except a 2010.
my cousin bought a black 2012 Pilot. I absolutely love it. Drove it a few times and it drives so smooth. The seating is versatile and it feels solid. Cant wait to see what the next Generation will be like.
Love your reviews. A suggestion for those who would use the suv for camping, How about laying down in car with the second and back seats down so we can see the space instead of giving the usual cubic feet stats like many reviewers do.
@Thomas Le - it's funny, soon after we shot that segment, I pulled the remote down and showed Alex. We both got a chuckle afterwards. We just finished driving and reviewing the Honda Odyssey and in THAT video, we pulled the remote out :-) Dave
Hey guys! Nice job on the review of the Pilot. I just watched the ones on the Accord vs Passat, and the follow up of the V6 Accord Touring...again, just a few things i have to point out being a sales rep for Honda! First off, VCM for Honda will actually shut down the V6 into as few as 3 cylinders, as well as to 4 under moderate driving conditions! Next time just remember the latch to pop the hood is always on the left side of the H emblem on the grill! For the most part you guys were bangon
Thanks for making this video on my birthday because I saw the navigation and I saw the date so I found out that this video was filmed on my birthday. Thank you.
@Lisa Smith, the 2013 is our third Pilot and when we first got it, I definitely felt "something weird" when going around 30-40 mph and the ECO light kicked on. I guess you could call it a vibration...but like everything else, you just get accustomed to it after a couple of days. Certainly no loss of performance, and the gas mileage is great. Not a deal breaker for me...I'd buy another one tomorrow.
For the Rear Entertainment System Remote, first push the button, then pull the remote down. I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey EX-L w/Nav & DVD, and the remote is similar to this one.
Yes that remote is a handheld remote. After releasing it down, you have to use a decent amount of force to pull it out of the holder and into your hand
Driver side knee room! They need to add some. I am not freakeshly tall and whenever I drive one of these I hate how my right knee has no room in there.
I don’t mind the shift lever. It makes me think I’m back in my MG midget. Most of my life I’ve driven a standard shift car. I actually on my second Honda pilot. I had a 2004 pilot and now driving a 2014. It’s great in the snow and refuse to pay $54,000 for a car. The last owner put in the auto start for those snowy days. This Honda has a long t more room. I shop all the time going to stores and filling up the whole back of the Honda.
Thanks for the answer back. I do agree with what you're saying. You guys are doing an awesome job on this channel by the way, in line with reviewers who have been doing it for years like Steve Hammes! Really thorough reviews.. Nice cars too!! Keep it up!
Nice review I came close to buying this vehicle, but everyone in my area has one already. The drop down on the roof is the remote control and it is removable.
Oh....and the remote for the RES (rear entertainment system) is actually detachable, give it a good tug and it is a hand held remote so anybody in any rear seat can control the source and playback! And FYI, the headsets only work in the back 2 rows, not upfront (as a safety feature of course)...how functional they serve as ear muffs, i'm not quite convinced!
We have a 2011 EX-L 4WD Pilot. Good for you guys getting 20mpg overall but I've never seen close to that. In a daily mix of highway and street driving, we have never seen more than 17.5mpg. That is with my wife driving. On pure highway trips, we have seen 20.5mpg and that is with cruise set at 72 mph.
No problem man. I just didn't want people to have the wrong idea when they came o to a Honda lot expecting push button start on a vehicle that first support it. As I said. Remote start is available as an accessory. But ouch button is only available on the Accord EX and above, and the Crosstour V6 models
The MDX and Pilot are both older cars (Introduced in 2006 and 2007). The reason the CRV has push button start is because it was just completely re-designed and that was part of the re-design. The older cars can't really change all that much during their normal life cycle.
Wow, $41,270?? Mine was a real steal then, Touring trim and package with running boards that have night-time lamps, and door visors, all for $39,000 out the door
VCM does not improve fuel at low speeds; it improves it at LOW ENGINE LOADS.That includes when coasting, braking, when cruising city speeds and when maintaining a consistent speed on the highway. VCM only disables when you need more power such as when trying to accelerate. The VCM allows the engine to act like a 3,4 or 6 cylinder depending on how much power you need.
I just picked up the 2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 4WD w/Leather this past weekend. I purposely chose not to get the Touring or RES on my model because I won't have kids in the back ever. Just adults. And don't need in-dash navigation. Drives like a charm so far. And you guys are absolutely right regarding the interior and dash.
Hey guys, i have been watching your reviews for awhile and love them! I was just wondering, where do these years take place? I notice much forestry and snow so just wondering. Thanks!
@everymandriver Great review, I'm stuck between the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander both top of the line models. Which one would you guys recommend? Thanks.
"Shall we again rehearse this"... Well, yeah. The remote does some out. I'm now driving my third Pilot (2003, 2011 and 2013) they just keep getting better.
@Alexander Michalak, first, I don't have a car, this is what I do every week (drive new vehicles and produce detailed video reviews). Secondly, each vehicle has a different audience in mind, in my opinion. Personally, I'd go for the Pilot. Good questions - Dave
I have a 2008 Pilot and the release button on the entertainment system you pull it off and when gym your done with your remote out the full thing back at ones and you'll hear a click to make sure it's secure
good review! i like how you guys left on the head sets to keep your ears worm, and i like that Pilot but i don't like the boxy look of it, but i will take the MDX, and as for the push button start, i'm sure Honda is putting it on the next gen, Pilot, and MDX , because they originally did not put push button start on the current gen.
the "controller" on the RES (rear entertainment system) pops out like a remote control... and also guys... the 2013 CRV DOES NOT have push button start... just fyi...
speaking of accord...you guys should do a 13 accord v6 coupe (auto, do to the majority of sales being auto) I have found very few accord coupe reviews. Tons of sedans which I also love!
Hi Guys , I am so confuse between Pilot and the Pathfinder. I like how the Pilot is spacious and I like how is the Pathfinder is luxurious. I would like to get your opinion as I am traveling a lot and I need a reliable , stable and safe car for long trips. Thanks
Accord does come with push button start, in fact I think at the moment it is the only Honda with push button start at the moment. But I am 100000% sure that the US spec of the CR-V does not have push button start. Look it up on the Honda website.
Hey guys. Nice review, very thorough. I like this vehicle, and you are right, it is very useable, but im not sure you should be comparing it to the MDX necessarily... I know it is tough not to because you just reviewed the MDX, but we own the Acura, and drove the Honda, and they're just not the same. The extra 50 HP does wonders, it handles gorgeously, it is definitely far better finished, and not as small as you make it out to be. Just food for thought. Thanks for the review :)
Great video, we are torn between the Honda Odyssey EXL and the Honda Pilot EX. Which do you think is better Dave? You can't beat a Honda! Also, what kind of cars do you guys drive?

The "thing" is a remote for the drop down entertainment system. Just tug a little but. It will come out. To put it back, just stick it in the way it came out and push back into the position it was.
Hmmm, I think you did not talked about visibility, back windows visibility, well, I assume this car has rear view camera, but it is important to talk about details of the driving experience. Saying that it has a great driving is not enough. Most buyers might not take this car out of the city or highway, so it is important to test it on urban conditions and talk about the vehicles dynamics (rolling on turns, road feeling, etc). But good review, tho...
Hey guys! So happy I found this video. Looking to upgrade my minivan one day - the kids are only getting bigger! Four kids, so we need a larger SUV. Looking for easy access to the back row for the kids, good cargo space, and mileage - though, most new SUV's already offer better mileage than my '07 Grand Caravan! Any that have stow'n'go seating? Or just fold half way? Thanks so much!
How does the Honda's VTM-4 system compare to the MDX's SH-AWD system? On paper, they appear to operate very differently, with the MDX's SH-AWD system seemingly being more complex and capable.
Excellent review, guys! I used to own the 2006 Pilot EX-L. The remote control would pop up from the roof. Just get that sucker out with all your might. So, why do you guys think Honda changed the headlights on this new Pilot? Also, they removed the side markers from the body of the vehicle. Now, only the top of the line Pilot seems to have them on the side mirrors. I must say I don't like the design of this Pilot. It looks less aerodynamic to me. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

I just bought it in May and I LOVE it. It was a lease so it still looks brand new and only had 44K miles on it.
I love your guys review. I feel I don't even need to test drive the Pilot anymore and makes car shopping so much easier.

Very smooth with almost no rode noise. I know cuz I have this same pilot myself.
2021 and for me really believe this is the most beautiful aggressive design! Hope they bring back this soon for the next generation.
I don't know why they had to pusify the design. it was great and you can't find them anywhere nowadays because their owners stick to them for life.
I like this model( boxy ,bulky), but it drives like car 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great advice @mclasser - I hope our viewers take note of it. Thank you - Dave
To answer Alex's question, yes, that is a remote that you can pop off. It just takes a bit of force to get it to come out
I loved mine! I had it for 12 years. Started having expensive problems and so I traded it in for. 2025 CRV hybrid.
Love your reviews. A suggestion for those who would use the suv for camping, How about laying down in car with the second and back seats down so we can see the space instead of giving the usual cubic feet stats like many reviewers do.
I did that in Yosemite! I was able to fit back there with a twin memory foam topper.
i own a 2012 one, its great, comfortable and gives you a different driving experience.
You guys are getting better every day seriously congratulations...
@Thomas Le - it's funny, soon after we shot that segment, I pulled the remote down and showed Alex. We both got a chuckle afterwards. We just finished driving and reviewing the Honda Odyssey and in THAT video, we pulled the remote out :-) Dave

Thanks for making this video on my birthday because I saw the navigation and I saw the date so I found out that this video was filmed on my birthday. Thank you.
I have 2012 pilot, probably one of the best cars I owned, more comfortable than MDX, but some AC noise when in engine is in idle

There is additional storage behind the third row beneath the floor.
Alex, to pop out the remote control to the rear entertainment system, try pulling it forward until it comes out. I've done it before.
realllyyyy great video guys!!! the channel is becoming great! the videos keep getting better and better!
Driver side knee room! They need to add some. I am not freakeshly tall and whenever I drive one of these I hate how my right knee has no room in there.

You guys need to get your hands on a 2016 Honda Pilot. Love watching your reviews.
Nice review I came close to buying this vehicle, but everyone in my area has one already. The drop down on the roof is the remote control and it is removable.

@yesdvt, congrats on your purchase. I only wish the Pilot had a few more upgrades on the inside; too much hard plastics - Dave
Saw this at the dealer today. They commented that it does not have a push button start intentionally because it drains more battery.
We have a 2011 EX-L 4WD Pilot. Good for you guys getting 20mpg overall but I've never seen close to that. In a daily mix of highway and street driving, we have never seen more than 17.5mpg. @LittlLive - we haven't reviewed the 4Runner yet... so we can't say but when we do, we'll be sure to share it on EMD, thanks for your feedback - Dave
Another good review guys. When are you going to review the Nissan Mallfinder (which is in the same class as this)?
That drop down thing on the entertainment system hooks up to a remote, I guess that particular Pilot didn't come with the remote itself.
The MDX and Pilot are both older cars (Introduced in 2006 and 2007). The reason the CRV has push button start is because it was just completely re-designed and that was part of the re-design. The older cars can't really change all that much during their normal life cycle.
@Desmond McHugh - yep, certainly the Pilot and MDX don't compare but I hear your point. Thank you - Dave
Nice review. These are great reliable vehicles, a manly looking truck. Most others are a little soft looking.
Very good review guys...my new favorite review show..keep up the formula!
Wow, $41,270?? Mine was a real steal then, Touring trim and package with running boards that have night-time lamps, and door visors, all for $39,000 out the door

i actually hate the push button start i feel like im always going to forget the keys... haha

And don't need in-dash navigation. Drives like a charm so far. And you guys are absolutely right regarding the interior and dash.
Sorry for the Question, but what's RES?
The remote comes out of the hole! You just need to pull it out. It is fairly simple. It is also the same TV console as the pre-2010 MDX's!
Thanks.

Hey that remote is remove able my mom used to have an oddesy with that and i would control the radio and dvd player from the back row
It's a remote for the entertainment system, Acura MDX also has that remote,
@Alexander Michalak, first, I don't have a car, this is what I do every week (drive new vehicles and produce detailed video reviews). Secondly, each vehicle has a different audience in mind, in my opinion. Personally, I'd go for the Pilot. Good questions - Dave

hey guys nice review! Btw does it have blind spot monitoring on the side mirrors like the CR-V?
Dude. I work for a Honda dealership. The accords have push button start. Not the Pilots or CRVs
Good review Dave. Thanks for an honest and unbiased review.
+Rahul Rane That's how I roll 24/7 :-)
good review! i like how you guys left on the head sets to keep your ears worm, and i like that Pilot but i don't like the boxy look of it, but i will take the MDX, and as for the push button start, i'm sure Honda is putting it on the next gen, Pilot, and MDX , because they originally did not put push button start on the current gen.
excellent points @wtrdogg20 - we will absolutely keep those suggestions in mind in the future - Dave
Thank you, @cassiocm - glad you enjoyed the review, I only wish they made a more luxurious version of the Pilot cuz if they did, I'd buy one :-) Dave
yeah they do, but they obstruct some of the view for the driver. But the car still has a backup cam
everywhere else in the world...the new crv does have push button start...idk why the US doesnt...
the "controller" on the RES (rear entertainment system) pops out like a remote control... and also guys... the 2013 CRV DOES NOT have push button start... just fyi...

great review guys.....very thorough
I have a Honda pilot car it’s good for every day uses like grocery shopping 🛒 for many things
Great video, we are torn between the Honda Odyssey EXL and the Honda Pilot EX. Which do you think is better Dave? You can't beat a Honda! Also, what kind of cars do you guys drive?
Great review, do you have a review for the 2013 Toyota Highlander?
I sold a Pilot Touring today (highest trim level that a Pilot comes in) no push button start
Only the accord and Crosstour have push button start man. The CRV EXL does NOT have pay button start. Remote start is an option. No push button
How's the ride on the Pilot? Is it firm or soft? Road and wind noise?
Not in the U.S. 2012 or 2013 CR-V in the U.S. don't offer push button start.
@fantomtuba, thank you. Please see my more recent 'solo' reviews and you'll notice my facts are accurate - Dave
The remote definitely releases

I have a 2015 Pilot SE. Black, Tan leather seats. I love it. I also have a 2017 Accord SE. Black, black leather seats. Boo-ya!
I drove my Toyota for 7 years (84 months).
I love Honda pilot
CR-V doesn't have the push button start. Acura RDX does have it.
You downloaded that on my last day of school
Hmmm, I think you did not talked about visibility, back windows visibility, well, I assume this car has rear view camera, but it is important to talk about details of the driving experience. My sister bought the 2013 CR-V EX and it's not a push button start engine. You need to use a key for it. You guys might correct your video!!
Hey guys! So happy I found this video. Looking to upgrade my minivan one day - the kids are only getting bigger! Four kids, so we need a larger SUV. Looking for easy access to the back row for the kids, good cargo space, and mileage - though, most new SUV's already offer better mileage than my '07 Grand Caravan!

which 1 would you recommend a Honda Pilot or Acura MDX will I get the similar performance out of the pilot or will be happy with mdx
Excellent review, guys! I used to own the 2006 Pilot EX-L. The remote control would pop up from the roof. Just get that sucker out with all your might. So, why do you guys think Honda changed the headlights on this new Pilot? Also, they removed the side markers from the body of the vehicle. another great review guys
