    I am in Hawaii and feed is a little more expensive here. I pay $35 for 50lbs of pellets and $60 for a bail of Timothy hay. Nothing like raising your own meat though. Great video and information.

      Wow, that is much more expensive actually. But it pays off for sure.

    Thank you....I raise them but never calculated costs. I think the $2/$2.50 figure is very very good.

    My two females are nursing and they eat like pigs!
    They drive for the food even if it's twice as much as I feed the buck.

      I always keep my nursing does feeders full. They do eat a lot more during that time.

    I've had minimal luck in preparing meat rabbits as food so far. Do you believe the meat needs to be "rested" first and if so, how long is good? Also where can I find a couple of 'fool-proof' recipes? Have you considered any videos covering prepping, storing and preparing rabbit meat? I'm losing my enthusiasm for farming because my end results have been less than spectacular!
    Thanks for any input on this!

      so sorry for the slow response. Yes, it is best to let the meat rest until rigor passes. usually about 24 to 48 hours. The best way to cook it is to roast it or pressure cook it. It is really too lean to fry. For a quick and easy meal pick up one of those McCormick bag in seasoning kits for chicken amzn.to/2x705uD (that is an affiliate link but you can get them at your local grocery store) and just substitute rabbit for the chicken. Look for pressure cooker, crock pot, or roasting recipes with chicken and just use rabbit instead. I hope that helps.

    Could you do a cost break down video like this for quail, please ?

  • @Daveferatu

    I'm a prepper. I am interested in how/what to feed rabbits and quail if store bought feed isn't available.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 лет назад

      It would require a lot of foraging. I might address that in a future video.

      @Slightlyrednecked  7 лет назад

      Thought about it. Just a lot of work and not really worth it just yet. maybe some day though.

      I did live stream. I was running a little late though. Been a busy couple of weeks and running a little behind on things.

    my rex rabbit is lactating.. I keep filling up her food dish and she runs to it. not sure if she is just hungry cause she was free feed before I got her or if its cause she is nursing.. don't want her to get fat but I also don't want to malnourish her. my other none nursing does get a tuna can a day. about 5 oz they seem fine with it but they also weren't free feed and are not nursing so I really have nothing to go on to say one way or the other.

      when a rabbit is nursing young I free feed it. Keep the feeders full all the time. The babies will leave the nest and start to sample food as early as 10 days old.

    Have you ever tried to figure out what it costs to bring a Quail to 8 weeks old for butchering?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 лет назад

      Working on that now. I have some rough ideas but trying to get it more precise before posting video on it.

    • @tropicallivingoverseas5202

      Slightly Rednecked Best answer I can come up with is Adult quail eat 50-60 grams a day and after some math it averages out to $1.50 per bird to butcher weight. But that's just a semi educated guess.

    Chris,so i want to get 1 pair meat rabbits i want the newzelands red and the new zeland white witch should my male be and witch one should my female be? Please help
    And also witch feeders are better tge ones you have or the ones you fill from the inside? Thanks

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 лет назад

      I like the feeders you fill from the outside. So much easier. It doesn't really matter which rabbit is the male and which is the female. Usually the bigger one is the female if that helps.

    How much hay do they consume on average ? Kieran from Scotland.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  6 лет назад +2

      I have never measured but a bale of hay will last me a very long time. some days they don't eat any and sometimes they eat it all. I only put a large handful in the hay rack when it is empty.

    Why is it ok to feed apple cider vinegar and not vegetable vinegar?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 лет назад

      I am not familiar with vegetable vinegar. But really it's not that other vinegar can't be used it is just that apple cider vinegar has many health benefits and works much much better.

    Hey I have a question I recently bred my rabbits but she is past over the 31 days. I bred her on 30th July but no babies. she is now refusing to let the buck mount her so is she pregnant or can it be something else? I have French Angoras

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 лет назад +1

      It doesn't sound like she is but there is still a chance. I would give her another week just to be sure and then try to re breed her at that point.

    That's really not bad for them. I love meat rabbits that no additional antibiotics/stuff is in, it was really all about the meat for low cost for me, now it's about the additive free meat (Supermarkets and butchers are doing halal meat and seriously butchering this country and it's all going up in price) and the cost of it. I think these guys have become my only option.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 лет назад

      I agree, it really isn't a bad price to know what goes into the meat you are eating.

    What kind of hay do you feed ??

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  6 лет назад +1

      I prefer Timothy Hay but really any hay is fine. You might want to stay away from Alfalfa hay since pellets are primarily Alfalfa.
