Walter and Brian were great. You should hear the story of his evening dinner party while he was on vacation and Brian did two 360s in the SR71 at 11:30 p.m. (full afterburner) right over Walter's house!
@@ryanstuckey8677 Sorry but: hogwash. The SR-71 could be built better and cheaper today. It is just that no-one wants to, because an even better solution, done even cheaper and with even lower risk, already exists. It was good for its time, but that time is no more.
Is this the Legendary Walter in the SR71 Blackbird that Silenced the Airspace above California when asking Air Traffic Controller just how fast was Aspen 3 Zero ( Call~Sign of the SR71 ) was going that flamed the Navy's F18 Hornet & formed tighter rapport with pilot Brian Shul?! Nice to finally meet you Sir Walter! 🌷🌿🌍💖🕊🇺🇸
Brian name drops Walter in the LA speed check story. Since the first time I heard it, "Who is Walter?" has been a burning question. Glad to have finally got to see Walter. Thanks.
I like how he tries to inform the LA Center ATC, "...a little closer to 2000." It just amazes me that mankind can dig up enough dirt and build a machine out of it like the SR-71. Thanks!
Finally glad to be able to put a voice and face to the Famous (Colonel) Walter Watson from the LA speed check. Many thanks Colonel. For what you and those around you did.
Walter wasn't the driver, he was the reason the driver had a job. The driver made sure Walter was in the right place at the right time so Walter could accomplish the mission.
I read the excerpts of the book "Sled Driver" and was absolutely amazed at the performance of this machine. Had a good friend I worked with that worked on both the U-2 & SR, and we swapped several stories. I have a great deal of respect for all who were involved with these aircraft. But still after seeing what I have including the space shuttle launch from the grand stands, there is nothing like night flight ops from the boat. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!
One of the craziest things ,every single video or picture of the plane moving, looks like it was taken yesterday, the final flight was what 20 years ago? The only chance you’ll ever get to see if this thing was even real or just made up are all in a museum somewhere. I finally got my chance to be within reaching distance of one, a fully loaded semi truck weighs the same as this thing, I can’t even fathom that kind of mass moving so damn fast. Imagine the next semi truck you’ve seen on the road going faster than a bullet. Completely mind blowing
I was just telling someone the other day that everything designed during WW2 was done with a slide rule. One of the most amazing things was designing battleship and cruiser main guns with tolerances of 21/1,000,000 of an inch. My grandfathers generation designed and built the greatest war machine the world has ever seen, and my dad's generation used it to win the war.
If you've ever heard the "LA speed check" story, well, this is Walter.
Yeah I realized that from the pictures. What a legend
The legend who didn't let his buddy revert to a 12 year old alone. lol
"I'm reading closer to 2000" priceless
That story never gets old.

I would like to meet you Sir
well met sir.
USAF Master Sergeant Jester had some enjoyable stories that leaves me wondering if they knew my father at work...lol
My family experienced DYSFUNCTION after his death. His memory of lessons and lectures etched in his oldest sons mind:)
Amazing to think this beautiful bird was designed by guys using slide rules.
