This song is a staple of classic rock stations across the US. It's also one I have on CD. I bought Vital Idol and Rebel Yell second-hand for this song and Rebel Yell. I came to like a few more of his songs, like "Dancing with Myself" and "Mony Mony" after buying those albums.
Phil Feit was the original bassist, but wasn't with Idol Long. Steve Webster replaced him from 1983-1985, who was then replaces by Kenny Aaronson from 1986-1987, who was then replaced by Phil Soussan from 88-90, who was then replaced by Larry Seymour 1990-96, replaced by Sasha Krivtsov in 2000, who was then replaced by Stephen McGrath who's sbeen with Idol since 2001.
That's a lot of different bass players, who I'm sure had their own way to play the song, so the live videos might help to get an "official" tab, but not necessarily the Original. After I go through them, we'll see what we can come up with.The bass is pretty easy to hear for most of the song, but the live videos will help with the positioning, since there are about 3 ways to play the song.

After spending a lot of time looking around, I found this Instagram video of Phil Playing it after writing everthing else.Biggest difference between this and the original studio line is that on a lot of the chord changes he holds the first note as a quarter note. I tend to want to do that myself when playing the song. Glad to know that it's not just in my head xD

You know it actually sounds better with down strokes. It is a pretty intense bass song but it sounds like different tones between the down strokes and upstrokes.
When you are going through all the movements in a few bars the alternate picking sounds good but the straight eights would definately sound better with down strokes only.
Try it. I went to bass from guitar. I figured out on bass down strokes with a pick and a totally different way to attack the strings. Think of single strings on bass like power chords on guitar.
