For a Westerner with little knowledge of the intricacies of North Indian classical music, hearing this piece inspired me to take up the study of sitar. I now have a wonderful teacher and an exquisite instrument from Ajay Sharma in Delhi and I play along to this piece sometimes from four in the morning for hours at a time. I have decoded the Raag which corresponds to the D Harmonic Minor scale and can hear the whole piece play from beginning to end in my mind. Gradually step by step the notes and rhythms reveal themselves. What a joy, what a privilege, what delights and inspiration India has gifted to the world. Next lifetime I pray to be born in Varanasi at a music school so that I may dedicate my life to study and perhaps one day even learn to play with such depth and bhav. Salutations!
ONE OF THE VERY FINEST SITARISTS ON EARTH IN UNISON WITH ONE OF THE VERY FINEST TABLA VIRTUOSOS ON EARTH; AND THE MUSIC IS PERENNIAL KEERVAANEE, BASED ON A BANDISH OF PANDIT RAVI SHANKAR: NATA NAAGARA AATI SUNDARA --- SUNG BY NONE OTHER THAN LAKSHMI SHANKAR.. THIS IS SUCH A PRECIOUS IMMORTAL PIECE OF GREAT HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE.
Samprasad Majumdarji... NATA NAAGARA AATI SUNDARA --- LOCHAN VISHAALA, NANDA KE LALA ~ i have had the opportunity of accompanying Lakshmi ji in a number of concerts where she rendered this lilting composition!. Thanks for reminding :-)
I originally recorded this in the early 80s when he was getting really big & known as a great artist alongside Pt Ravi-Ji & Ustad Vilayat Khan saahb!!!
Having known him personally when I was a child and the impact he had on my music aptitude cannot he described in words. His humility and sense of humor is all I saw whenever I interacted with him. His appreciation of other artistes - known/unknown was beyond belief. Something to note about his style is the use of base notes and sometime chords that apparently seem western renditions impeccably blended into what he is playing
He plays on another level.. His. Sitar is meditation and Purity.. One can feel and hear his love to the music❤️❤️❤️one of the most brillant sitar musicians. RIP ❤️
Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful. I miss him terribly. what a great artist. accompanied by a great artist too. pure joy listening to them. what great feelings
Rarely can we see someone who is fully lost so deep within, but only to be found. It makes me wonder if I should go by the simplicity of Panditji or by his mastery in sitar. In fact he can teach us both
Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee had the same guru namely Allauddin khan , but both trained differently . Ravi Shankar had exposure of the west so is more famous . Nikhil da was not so lucky but he is any time a better sitar player . His gayki ang ( trying to make the instrument sing ) is exemplary . Another artist who can be compared is ustad Abdul Halim Jafar Khan , but we could not hear him more often as he migrated to Pakistan
Announcements are not correct and writing in screen is also bad as both not mentioned PT. Before name. Very bad.both are one of the best classic players.respect must be paid by everyone
What an amazing artist Nikhil Bannerji was and what a loss to the world of music. Wonderful memories of him playing at the Royal Festival Hall in London when I was a young married woman. Memories, memories...
People come and go...... But why could none even attain his level. After listening to him, everything else feels like utter disappointment. May be because experience has no degrees; it is either best or worst. He is the Best and everything else worst

He was a true genius. Often imitated, never duplicated. Thanks for posting this.I've viewed this at least a thousand times.
True
You're most welcome from the guy who initially recorded it in the 80s.

His style of Sitar playing was different and amazing. I can never be tired of listening his Vimpalsi.

This is my favourite Kirwani gat. No one plays Kirwani like Pt. Nikhil Banerjee. Simply unbelievable.
A great stalwart. 🙏🏻 My favourite Sitarist for all times.
God has taken his revealing through his music. What a genius we have lost in his early departed soul.
Pt.nikhil banerjee is a stoll ward in indian classical music.
His style is wonderful and his stroke brings a lot of millennium gold.
We are proud.
One of the most melodious compositions. Beautiful chalan - d P g S R , specially in the magical and mystic hands of NB .
Very privileged audience to have been at the presence of undoubtedly one the best legends of sitar music. God bless his soul.
One of my most favourite artists. Pt. Nikhil Banerjee......playing one of my favourite raagas Kirwani... My pranams to the maestro.🙏🙏🙏
His music is so lyrical and the sound of his instrument is a gift from nature.

अनिंदो चैटर्जी जैसा कोई तबला वादक नहीं है। अद्भुत संगतकार तो हैं ही, जब शोलो बजाते हैं तो कोई दांतों तले उंगली दबाए बिना नहीं रह सकता।
A rare live performance by Pandits Nikhil Banerjee aand Anindya Chatṭerjee
One and only one Pandit Nikhil Benerjee 🙏🏼🙏🏼🌹🌹🙏🏼🙏🏼

Marvelous! I am very lucky to have heard such beautiful music.
Beautiful bandish, reminds me of the Kirwani bhajan, Nata Nagara, Ati Sundara: DPGSR. There is a great rendition by the late Smt Lakshmi Shankar
Thank you for sharing the bhajan!!

Why did Nikhil Banerjee die at such a young age (compared to other pandits and ustads? I mean why , why does he have to be gone?
God wanted Nikhil ji to play for him!
Karishma looking chic
