Medieval 2: Total War - How to get to America

Sorry about the vertical scale & background noises! This video is very old and used to have texts (annotations), but annotation has since been disabled by RUclips.
The main purpose of the video was simply a guide (and a very poor video guide I'll admit) and not for gameplay. I basically kept skipping turns until I got the event I needed. I even used money cheat via console commands to stay alive if necessary.
Game: Medieval 2: Total War (Not Medieval 2: Total War Kingdom)
Subject: How to get to North & South America
Did you know that at the far left of the map, there's a few regions of North & South America? You can sail to the new world, but only with late-game ships. You also have to wait a lot of turns for a specific late-game event called "The World is Round." As shown here 2:15
The amount of turns you need to wait for this event will vary. It may take somewhere between 140-180 turns, maybe more or maybe less, so Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV).
========================================================
Ship & Building Requirement:
The following factions that (obviously) CANNOT sail to & from America: Rebels, Mongols, Timurids, and Aztecs
Below is a list of ships that are required by specific factions to sail to & from America:
- Carrack (Requires a Naval Drydock): The Byzantium Empire, Denmark, England, France, Holy Roman Empire, Hungary, Milan, Papal States, Russia, Scotland, Sicily, Spain, Portugal, and Venice.
- Baghlah (Requires a Naval Drydock): The Turks, Moors, and Egypt.
- Caravel*** (Requires a Dockyard) and the Grande Carrack (Requires a Naval Drydock): Portugal and Spain.
Note:
- These ships can only be constructed by a Naval Drydock.
***However, Caravel is the only ship unique to Spain & Portugal that can be build with a Dockyard. A Dockyard can be build in a Citadel (For castle) & Large City (For City/Village). Portugal & Spain can get a head start in exploration!
- You can only build a Naval Drydock in Citadel (For castle) & Huge City (For City/Village).
- A Naval Drydock can't be build until you encounter "The World is Round" event.
========================================================
Steps:
You have to keep playing until Turn 140-180ish for an event called "The World is Round."
Step 1) You'll need a coastal city/castle (near the ocean/sea) that is upgraded to the latest tier, which are:
- Citadel (for castle)
- Huge City ( for city/village).
You have 140-180ish turns to reach that.
Step 2) In the meantime, make sure your coastal city/castle has the latest coastal building, which would be a Dockyard.
- If you are Portugal or Spain, Caravel is sufficient.
- For other factions, a Naval Drydock is needed. It will be available to build once you encounter the "The World is Round" event.
Step 3) Around Turn 140 to 180-ish, you should encounter the "World is Round" event, which allows you to upgrade your Dockyard to a Naval Drydock. If you did not encounter the event, then you might have to play even longer, or it could be bugged. YMMV when you'll encounter the event. As shown here 2:15
Step 5) Depending on what faction you are playing as, these are the ships you need to build: Carrack, Grand Carrack, Caraval, or Baghlah. As shown here 3:00 & 9:22
Step 6) Sail to North America (South America is also located right below).
- You cannot travel to America with any ships that are not listed! If your fleet is mixed with older ships, the fleet will refuse to sail further until you remove them! As shown here 3:47
- You CANNOT way-point all the way to America because of fog of war, so you have to move the ship little by little each turn, as shown here 4:15
========================================================
Idea:
- Consider gifting some European settlements to the Aztec. Maybe you can reenact the Sunset Invasion!
I have not tested this far to see if the Aztec would expand and fight in Europe or would just sit back.

Wtf ghahaha
buhahahahahahahaha

I always thought that it was a myth or that it was only possible in the expansion. It's funny because I can tell you most of the people who played Medieval II never actually sailed to the americas.
Históric correct
Me when I tell that foolish sailor that there's nothing but sea to the west and spain would never give him ships
true ,till internet expanded my mind did in this matter
Im playing in 2024 i aint even knew i thought the timurids were the last surprise

LOL that "Earth is round" event. People understood that the earth was a spherical celestial body continuously from when the theory was confirmed in the 3rd century BC onward-- that knowledge was never lost nor denied in the entire history of Christendom, and in fact spread on Christianity's back to all corners of Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. People thought Columbus was crazy not because he said the Earth was round, but because his estimates for its diameter were hella conservative and most scholars recognized this.
Patrick Zemites i thought that they discovered the world was round when Galileo and a few other people after him proved it several times.
No, no, you're thinking of heliocentricity: the notion that the Earth orbits the Sun. Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher, created a model for the solar system in which the Sun, Moon and planets were round and in orbit around one another; however, he placed Earth, not the Sun, at the center of this model, and pretty much everyone thereafter for centuries went along with it. Heliocentricity cropped up periodically, because there were some gaps in the geocentric (Earth-in-the-middle) theory; the early Renaissance saw multiple people, including Galileo and Copernicus, present this theory, but it wasn't until later that lenses were developed with sufficient magnifying power to prove it.
The Church went against these ancient teachings as any contradiction to the Bible could risk making it not credible, so the Church hid the books explaining it, and persecuted anyone who disagreed such as Bruno. Columbus had to convince the Spanish Queen the Earth was round before he could get any funding. If people already accepted the world was round by common knowledge why didn't people venture off before?
1. They went against philosophical principles wich would contradict their mainstream theology, but even that was mostly resolved by St. Thomas Aquinas. In general, all acient knowledge were widely studied by the scholars of the time.
2. The Church only started prohibiting books after the Protestant Reformation, wich is after the Age of Discovery had already started.
3. Bruno wasn't persecuted for scientific subjects.
4. Not true about Queen Isabella. The opposition was the exactly the same: Colombus had understimated the distance to Asia. The same reason why Portugal refused to fund him. It was ultimately accepted because it was a good bet.
5. They ventured before and failed, with ships never returning. The technological advancements were fundamental to the success of ocean travels.
Some Theologians taught that the earth was flat, however the magisterium has never taught such. That is to say, no pope ever declared it such, nor seemed to care. A matter of fact the Columbus trip makes more since if you assume it was round.
At this time period the Byzantines were being over run by the Turks. Europe was losing access to the silk road and the churches in India lost contact with the rest of Christendom. They had been requesting for much time more priests, however they were not making it through Muslim territory. If Columbus could find a way to India through an ocean route he could reconnect Europe to India and China via trade as well as get more priests over to India as had been requested.
So in summary the story of Christopher Columbus was a story of a Catholic man going to Catholic monarchs to fund a exploration voyage for the Catholic Church in order to reestablish communications with churches in India. The monarchs would of course be able to reap any rewards gained from new ocean trade. This is a trip that none of the parties involved would have been up to if they thought the world flat, and if it was something taught by the magisterium, then believing otherwise would be enough to get them excommunicated.
On the other hand upon discovering this new land Christopher talked in letters to the Spanish monarchs to use the money to fund a crusade of the Holy land, and for the Pope to send priests to the new world in order to convert the locals. He did not find India but they still got what they were looking for. Wealth and converts. Why? because from the very beginning they believed the world round.
I find it weird that a lot of people didn't know about this. I played this when I was 13 and as soon as I could recruit carracks my first instinct was to sail west. Pretty cool tbh
Yeah but not a lot of ppls actually plays a whole campaign to the turn 161
it's so funny how america is tiny af compared to the rest of the campaign map
AND YOU CAN GET TO THE CARIBBEAN BY SAILING STRAIGHT WEST FROM IRELAND
Like a boss.
Khorps I found fucking Florida XD XD XD 😆😆😆
can English ships go to America ??
hmm I think I'm gonna build a sail boat then
Yeah ik it really bothers me.
I'v had this game for what feel's like year's and i never knew you could do this. Thank you for the info.
the exact same with me thank you.
Yeah lol I just searched napoleon. Total war, and found a site for atilla total war and it led to Facebook where I read the replies to a message "medieval 3" and heard about it so I looked it up so it on a website, and it all made sense like where would the Aztecs be during the campaign and the fact that I had started a campaign as them once but never saved since it was weird with the terrain since I didn't see any countries.
Thank you! :D
HELLO FUTURE VIEWERS!!
Status of this comment section circa February 2018:
1. Trump jokes
2. EU4 jokes
3. 7 years later still tons of people commenting that they didn't know you could do this.
Hope World War 3 is not happening on your end
HAVE A NICE DAY
Oh my, why are we here... This video AND game are a tad old..
Hi . How you get Papal state to play with ?
January 2020, we almost had a ww3, are you a time traveler?
Welcome to 2020 boi, WW3 already happened and humanity is being wiped out by a pandemic that just reached GREENLAND
5.20 the world is on lockdown
To think how many actually didn't know this was possible since the game came out. 2006.
I didn't even think about it.
Colombus had great imagination
Pasha Staravoitau same
I tried this but there was a wall around America?
Yes there is. You can only cross the deep sea wall with a carrack or grand carrack. It can only be built by having a dockyard which becomes available when the "world is round" event pops up at about year 1400.
lol I thought he was making a trump joke
Adam Quinn lol same
antartica
me too !
5:08 in game, that actually made me laugh so hard. Just the peaceful intro and then... The aztecs *blood slaughter killing sacrificing pillaging*
classic aztecs
3:28 ALL ABORD THE ICE CREAM BOAT!
When ice cream got invented
can Denmark go to America in the beginning?
they have longboats that travelled to America 500 years before Columbus.
:D Actually 800 years before him! It was in the 700's
Right? Thats who I am playing as lol
VikingRage well sweden was first
Just shut the fuck up!
Eddie Helder ?
What I want to know more than anything is how you made it that far into the game without the entire world declaring war on you?
Active Diplomacy?
diplomacy in this game is not broken it is genius it is the player that cant understand it
zedio369 my question why are the Mongols Milan and Egypt such dicks.
zedio369 if world declare war on you. Declare war right back!
Stupid question.
You sure don't want to miss voting on the Pope and having his Papal blessing before the adventure.
OH SHIIIII AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!!!! I HAD NO IDEA!!!!!!
Seriously?
I was so surprised when i accidentally ended up in America, i thought i broke the game
If you make Mongols, Timurids your vassals you can transfer them to the New World by offering a territory there instead of that they possess in the Old World.
I played this Game since years and i didnt knew that
I have one city in america.
I went there as Poland.
Well, nobody said "Poland cannot into America"
poland can into space
Maximilian Schmitz poland can boom
In Soviet Poland, boats sail you
O jakiś Polak wkoncu
Ya this is my first campaign since I got this game on steam about a week ago. I also read that in either newer or older versions (like 1.0 or 1.2 or whatever) the gunpowder won't come till like turn 100 something. Thanks a lot for the help man!!!
6:12 "...to test if they have the technology to sail to Europe..."
That sound when transferring multiple agents between ships...
Since when is Mexico at the same geographical level as Norway???
@AlexNOSAM but América is completely wrong and deformed
is he playing on an iphone?
+Keith Nelton He's referring to the aspect ratio.
is it just milk????XD but no its just bad quality
Thanks man I'm only on turn 80 something, the mongols just invaded so I'll keep going!!! Thanks and I love the vids!
I love the fact that for some reason, the aztecs can be found on the united states when the only were on mexico
In the regular Medieval 2, the Americas wasn't all to complex, and when they live in the US, thats just them living there, or conquering rebels (toggle fog of war cheat can have you looking at America turn 1, theres rebels there)
But in Medieval 2 Kingdoms, America campaign, theres a few Mexican factions, and then the Apaches (I think in vanilla, these would be labeled aztecs) and rebels in the US.
xXDJLEE02Xx lol, aztecas and apaches have nothing to do with each other xD
Santiago Garrigos They're still Mesoamericans, both of em
xXDJLEE02Xx meh, gues you're right
im on like turn 100 but i dont even have guns yet XD
AermakStudios I am at 180 and i dont have muskets but i have carracks
😓💷👚xxx the best way former
***** Yeah but i still cant recruit musketeers
@AregonRay I know I meant around the 80 turns. Like, turn 80-89? Not the 1980's but lol now that I think of it it does sound like I wrote it that way.
Thank you lol, I found it, never knew this existed for about 2+ years now!!
Lol i remeber watching this when i was like 5, im 17 now
Woa
Playing since the beginning
Never knew that
Oh wow that's awesome! :D I'm so going to try this. :D
Great vid! How did you reset the first advice about what to conquer first, who are your neighbours, etc.?
:O, MY NEXT PORT UPGRADE IS CARRACK! Thank you sir, you have made my day.
This is a course we CANNOT go
I managed to get the world is round for the english at turn 161
thanks so much:) for You, Tom, I'm confusing about "how to go America", makes ne of My Family member takes 5 years since His sail, now I know where exactly is it, thanks again :)
Omg thank you!!!!
new easiest way. Wait till medieval kingdomes is on sale, buy it , play americas campaign. Done
btw you can play as aztects mayans and it is so much more fun with alot of other factions
Blackeye Studios
Americas was the worst one I prefer Crusades or Britannia, Teutonic is still fun but a ericas is just the worst one
@@ricola9533 Britannia is bae. I wish Thrones of Britannia was as good as that.
Wow! I never knew you could do this. I always wondered why the Aztecs were available in custom battles.
i conquered them in 4 turns ! they are so weak !
Maybe they were distracted doing blood sacrifices to their false Gods ...

Dam even old comment in kinda dead games videos that's cool ngl I thought I were the only one here reading this nostalgic comments
it takes decades to get to america lol...
@GDXTom It was a Citadel. More detailed: It was Ajacco upgraded into citadel.
Good! Thanks!
Another question, i would like to play siege games on lan... But when i create the game i can choose only between pre-set battles or classic battles on open camp... There is no way to play 1vs1 on siege mode? One defend the city and the other attack?
Thanks brotha your a savior
Ive been playing total war for ages and did not know about this
This was my best gaming-moment ever.
the mongols appear in the same turn as you, but the discovery of gunpowder appears to me with all factions always on turn 106, the version I have is 1.3. What I can do to make this event appears on turn 86 as you?
Thanks.
@GDXTom Hey GDX, how do you unlock all the factions so you could be any in the campaign.
@GDXTom thanks from writing back is that game worth the money. whitch would you buy rome total war or mediaval 2 total war
I like that what you sayd about to give aztecs some city`s in europe!
Nice tutorial btw.
One rule to rule them all: turn of advices 😂
Great video.
nice video man ty
Nevermind that was in test cases. Ok mine says 210 220 so I guess I will be getting it soon. I modded mine so the end date was 6000 instead of modding the timescale because that moves back all of the events. So thanks for you help a lot!!! I really appreciate it and I will subscribe if I haven't already
@GDXTom Now I know what to do, but I am yet encountering problems. -_- When I click save, it says: Cannot save C:Programs blah-blah-blah-descr_script. And it won't let me save the file.
hi see if you don't have the dockyard would you still get it as a upgrade or do you have to do something about it.
@GDXTom i dont have the game but is there ship battles in this game?
oh man I'm going to have fun with this!!!
do you have to to get all the factions in it to get to the americas or can you get to new zealand and other lands around that area
@GDXTom ok when i do that. it says im not allowed to make changes to that file..what do i do then?
@GDXTom ok when i try to save "descr_strat" after ive made changes then i go to save it and it says access denied
Umm I may sound like a noob but how do you get that starting intro thing by the advisor to work? For me it just kind of starts.
hey GDTXTom i did exactly what you did cept i went to the new world a lil later. but i didnt get that Aztec pop up vid i got something different. and i cant go deeper in to the new world. whys is that?
@GDXTom I think it's not a script thing, I think there is condition to be met in order for it to happen (Like in RTW where when the first imperial thing is built you get the Marian Reform)
You are right if you think that the world is flat, which was the perception before the discovery of the New World. But if you maintain the globe aspect of the world and imagine curvy longitude and latitude lines on the mini map, it's not as diappointing, but yea its not that great for the purpose of the game.
There is a mod that lets you play as any faction in the game. I chose to play as the Aztecs, then sailed across the atlantic and conquered Great Brittan :3
There is a mod for kingdoms that lets you play with any faction in the world, plus you have the world map at your disposal!
ooo, I've searched for that cheat for a few years xd Ty :P
you can even unlock factions appear in event, such as mongol
Sry but how do you recruit musket units? What do you build? i know how to build cannos but not musket infantry.
i just come to here to watch the comfyness of the vid
i think the moment that you can go to the america's or gunpowder depends on which nation you are. example Spain can go earlier on to america than russia
how did you get that adviser intro at the beggining of the campaign?
this is gonna be epic
@GDXTom Can you get to America after it says "The Wolrd is Round" without the Carrack?
@Ztiller1991 How were you able to sail across the atlantic?
@mouthforwar17 You need to defeat it ( If I remember correctly) or unlock manualy by puting scotland from Unlockable to Unlocked (or something like that)
Will this work in normal Medieval 2 or do I need the Kingdom Expansion pack?
What's the faction with the white flag and circular red logo? I know it's not singapor airways
please someone help me! i got a new laptop and i wanted to try widescreen so after it fully downloaded i tried playing but the options and stuff during the gameplay are on the top! ive tried everything but i do no know what to do, how do i put it back normally?
you have to save the folder somwhere else e.g computer - downloads. and then copy that folder into the desired place
Do u know how to setup the third age because i have it downloaded and installed but still dont know how to set it up and play it
The World is Round. The debate still rages.
You canceling those 2 buildings when it only had 1 turn until completion triggered me so much.
@GDXTom Okay so it has to be Citadel or Huge City?
Is there any battles or just autorun in this version?
It will be helpful
But I have a heard portugal and spain advantage with naval dock
They don't need a naval dry dock
It mean they can travel faster the other factions?
Yep
That ships can be built without gunpowder opening? Some changes in text
mmm i have a problem im in the turn 124 and i have all the regions so i have to wait 40 turns to make big docklands? ( im with england)
How do you have all the factions? I only have England, France, Venice and I think Spain.
What turn did you met the Timurid cause i never enounter them before i only encounter The Mongols
alguem pode me ajudar, quando minhas unidades acertam a misseis de fogo nos inimigos eles começam a queimar mas quando morrem nao aparecem queimados,se alguem souber como resolver
Thank you for hd version
Worked, thanks.
Hey on Rome total war if u have an army in a city can u select more than one unit, how?
Just go to imperial/ campaign in system files. Change events date from -something- to 10 20. Enjoy. You can start your American Empire by turn 40.
For more fun, you can mess with the mercenary files also. Remove religions from each line of text and Christian factions will be able to hire missile cavalry. It's fun and it's awesome. You will be able to see Crusading sergeants in Jihad armies.
2 questions please answer GDXTom,
1: why have poland got a city in italy but no empire leading them there? theyve just randomly acquired a city fairly far away from where they start without taking anywhere inbetween? :S
2: why has the pope taken masses of land? the most ive seen them take before is florence and a place owned by the moors, they dont usually take much? yet in this game they have a descent empire? :S
Not questioning you, just interested in how the game progressed into this? :)
@GDXTom do u have to be at round 86 or something
Nice video :)
This is quite cool.
