    My favorite thing about DRG is the balance amongst the classes is perfect. No class is better than the other and they all complement each other so well. It’s very rare a game can balance out it’s classes as perfect as DRG does.

      I would say that there are definitely classes that are better than others, but I do think it's impressive that basically no matter what my team comp is, whatever class joins I'll be happy to have that person and they'll be helpful. But I personally think, especially on Haz 5, Engineer and Gunner are very powerful classes with scout and driller still being very impactful, but just slightly less so.

      Some are better at certain things, but you can't go wrong with any. Engi feels really stron though.

      I dunno I do find scout especially on harder difficulties kind of starts to wane, his grapple hook is useful for him but only him, the flare is nice to have but no necessary, and he can't really out dmg a gunner or out CC a driller, hes almost more like a solo character in a team setting.

      I’d have to disagree with the comments here. You can’t shoot, or prepare for, what you can see. Flares let you see. And if you got a good scout he’s never gonna let those high priority targets, like trijaws, praetorians, grabbers, etc. get to the team if he can help it. And though gunner has incredible DPS and can have some good swarm control, you can’t out-control a driller. On haz five the cryo cannon or sludge pump can save your life by forcing bugs off of you. And if things are getting real rough, only one class can make bunkers. Engineer and gunner are both quite strong though.

    i think you undersold the gunners shield a lot, its ability to quite literally save runs by making anyone in it near invincible makes it by far the best utility in the game

      ​@@amanwithnoplan7648yeah, realizing that I essentially get two free for every resupply I take has lead to me using them more, not just in the worst case scenarios, helps to avoid those rather than only using them to solve them

      Someone (forgot who) said gunner is a combo DPS/medic class, and it's so right. Now I always take ironwill + medic, because gunner is the best at reviving the team, although scout has his own roll in pulling off distant saves, or saves that require going up, which can be a death sentence for gunner on his zip if the swarm is out of control and he's the last man standing. Tend to get shot off and die from fall damage or fall into a swarm.

    Driller and gunner are almost opposites in their tools which is probably why they compliment each other so well
    Driller: mostly AOE weapons with a little single target weaponry
    Gunner: mostly single target weapons with a little AOE
    Driller: traversal tool moves team through the ground
    Gunner: traversal tool moves team through the air
    Driller: gadget is the strongest damaging item in the game
    Gunner: gadget is the strongest defensive item in the game

    On Reddit a few weeks ago I posted a poll asking who, as a Driller, you should want to have as a second teammate for synergy purposes (Scout, Engineer, Gunner, Bosco, or a second Driller). I was blown away at the reasonings people gave for Driller/Gunner being a very useful combination, covering each others weaknesses both in traversal and fighting.

      My favorite combo. Driller and gunner can get anywhere together. And when Driller gets mad and C4s me, I just stare at him in disappointment, and go get some red sugar.
      Engi and Scout also make a legendary combo, and although driller and gunner can do anything, it's much faster and more pleasant with a scout / engineer duo as well. They can get stuff in the ceiling 10x faster, and help you see it in the first place.

      Driller and engi can make some near impenetrable fortifications on salvage ops and the gunner can help by firing his big guns into choke points made by the engi

    You forgot to factor in Gunner's shield. This is game saving and you can revive your teammate or take a resupply safely, this also benefits the whole team. Also, gunner can deal high dmg or effective crowd control at any ranges, unlike the driller. The real weakness of a gunner is his mobility tool. It excels at crossing large holes, at point extraction and for combat use (basically immune to melee ground creatures) however it has a low ammo cap, is slow and you can be knocked off it and suffer fall dmg/death. Flamethrower with volatile bullet and cryo canon with an autocannon are good pairs, driller and gunner makes a really good duo.

    As a Driller main i say: The Gunner is superior. Those guys are ROCK SOLID and I deeply respect them.

      Brother we wouldn't survive without you guys either! If it weren't for drillers I would probably never load into radioactive exclusion zone or magma core due to how tedious it is to mine in there! You also always bring a sort of chaotic joy to the team that I find very useful in situations where I would normally just quit! ROCK AND STONE BROTHER!!!

      Indeed, for me Driller is best at killing little stuff, Gunner best at killing big stuff, there is nothing better than being driller on ground burning everything in sight while having Gunner on zipline above killing important targets.

    Neither. They’re supposed to work together. Flamer driller is best supported by hurricane gunner, cryo driller is best supported by leadstorm/thunderhead gunner, and sludge driller is best paired with a thunderhead gunner.

    For the 2 dwarves who read this. Gunner(player) also "needs" to be good at traversing caves.
    You dont have any cheat codes(grappling gun, plats, drills) so you get punished hard for falling into bad spots or being stuck in bad terrain during a horde.

    I'm going to put it this way, I always want a gunner on my team and if I don't have a driller I'm going to be worried, they are both beasts in this game, but gunner is just reliable in any scenario and his shield for those revives is huge, but in the end we need both in a squad

    as i started drg as gunner i lost my path to escape pod, then saw molly running on ceilings, i was like fuck it, i drill my way back, driller since then.

    Great video but you forgot to mention Hazard Levels. Hazards 1-3 The Gunner is boring and just doesn't do a anything, but Hazards 4 + 5 he is pretty critical to success. It's probably why a lot more people main Driller when they start out as he's the more engaging of the two.

      Very true, although the same goes for driller, since many of his weapons are AOE and scale well with enemy count (specifically flamethrower and sludge pump). The way I see it, driller is king of efficiently deleting/dealing damage across huge swarms, and gunner is better at dealing raw damage to heavy targets like oppressors and praetorians. Both can deal with both obviously, but I think that's the main distinction.

      started scout, when I moved up to haz 5 I swapped to gunner. The dakka is much more fun, and my scout build is basically gunner with more weakpoint damage and less ammo

    Until hazard 4 a gunner is not a must pick but on 5 and the elite deep dives you should have 2 in your team.
    A driller is a must on all levels.

    its actually crazy how you can synergize driller and gunner. In a bad spot a driller can drill a tunnel and the gunner can throw a shield in the tunnel to block off all bugs from entering temporarily

    As a Driller main that's recently gotten into Gunner a bit more, I've noticed a lot about it. Mainly... Gunner's main advantage isn't damage, or even killing. Gunner is the SUPPORT class, from what I've seen. Think about it. What other class has as many methods of getting the fear proc? Which class can put down a shield to save the day when all else fails? Who else has a movement equipment that just about only makes sense from a team perspective, rather than an individual one. When you dig holes or put down platforms, you have enough to spare for yourself. Gunner only has 3-4, and they all have to count, to be useful for everybody.
    It's hard to hear about Gunner being put into of the role the guy that kills stuff, cause it never really felt like that to me. With how many warcrimes Drillers commit on the daily (of which I am no exception), pretty sure there's a mislabel going on somewhere.

      Well you just showed you are low level gunner. Gunner is a killing class and I think there's no such a thing as supporter class in DRG. Everyone has their niche, driller is CC, engi fast clearing swarms, gunner is reliable by that I mean you shoot when everybody is reloading and scout is the one who should kill high priority targets. Everybody covers weakness of others. Also as gunner is my second most played class I always end up second or first in kills.

      @@Visnulv Far be it from me to tell anyone how to play their main class. I don’t think what I said contradicts Gunner’s ability to kill stuff, cause that’s also the most SUPPORTIVE thing he can do. I merely disagree with the single-minded label he has. He’s quite a bit more nuanced than that. Sure, you can ignore his MANY utility features, but that doesn’t change that he has the most team-focused kit out of every other class. Any class can pump out damage if you build them right.
      But compared to just about EVERY OTHER GAME IVE PLAYED… DRG Gunner is the least kill-focused “damage-dealer” class I’ve ever seen. Support doesn’t mean weak. It means you can save your team in ways besides damage at the drop of a hat. Gunner does that. End of discussion.
      Play how you want to play. Doesn’t mean I’m wrong, just means you focus on different features. Fear is a powerful debuff. So is stun, both of which Gunner has in spades. If you’re not using them… well, you do you.

      Gunner is more single-target oriented and is closer to a team tank, not support. Driller is a versatile walking warcrime(literally every weapon is a warcrime of some sorts) but mostly the nuker and the builder

    Try as I might, even after so many years, I can never seem to find a Driller build that gives me the same fun as any of the other classes. Maybe it's how his weapons don't hit with quite the same punch or engage in anything much more than spray at short range. Maybe it's how his guns focus so hard on comboing together into one strategy (Crispr/Temp Shock wave cooker etc.) instead of each being tailored to cover distinct scenarios as they appear (M1000/Nuk-17's for long range single target and short range swarm clear). Maybe it's because his traversal tool's utility exists only on the edges of the play space (and involve staring at nothing but a wall and terrain scanner as you do) when every other class can make use of the open areas. Maybe it's how pretty much only Impact Axes are, in almost all scenarios, the only option to take as they give him healing (Vampire also being an almost mandatory perk with him) and one his only burst damage options outside of a couple ammo guzzling overclocks and his suicide bombs. Perhaps it's due to his support ability feeling like nothing more than a glorified grenade that you really have to try to make use of because either swarm in front of you isn't worth the effort to aim, throw, and retreat, or the risk of team self-destruction is too great. Maybe it's because in many gametypes, like Escort, Industrial Sabotage, Elimination etc. I don't feel powerful enough with just elemental damage alone. Maybe it's just because the act of drilling and terrain manipulation, outside of end game drop pod running and Refinement, I never find all that necessary and would rather have an extra gunner or engie there.
    Weirdly, though, he's my most played class due to playing almost nothing but him in the beginning. I love bunkering and would find it super fun to hear the swarm announcement and scramble to dig in - but that just doesn't really happen much anymore even on higher difficulties. The other three classes I revolve around frequently - but Driller I find to be the last I always end up promoting from a much lower rank than the others.

    I can almost swear that Karl was a driller. The true overly manly man of the game is definitely the driller. But, in a game where everybody has some certain role and their priorities set out before them, the class that takes on the role of a bodyguard for the whole operation cannot be any less in damage numbers. It's true that you can't play driller if you don't know the hand you're dealt with and it's true that he's one of the most versatile classes in the game especially in terms of traversal. But in my personal opinion the road to playing the gunner to its full potential goes through the way of learning what all the classes do and why they're doing what they're doing in the instant you're trying to save them. This is why I think gunner has the highest skill ceiling in the game.

      Only for other classes. Gunner can get fairly decent speed on them.
      However, going down is pretty quick and don't forget how ziplines can save lives in really vertical missions. As long as you can catch the line you can fall from any height and take zero damage.

      the biggest drawback is that if you get hit on a zipline you fall to your death. It's an amazing in-game feature that makes it totally balanced.

    Going into a haz 5 mission missing 1 class:
    I miss having an engi
    I am worried about nitra having no scout
    Having no gunner is fine if NOTHING goes wrong (which never happens)
    I either don't care there is no driller or switch to him for oil rigs.

      Def the same thought. Driller is the one class that if I don't have it going into a mission, it doesn't really worry me that much. Every other class, if I was missing them I'd feel like I'm missing a really integral part of the mission plan

    Gunner has the highest quantity of the best OCs in the game: Neurotoxin payload, minelayer system, Plasma burster missiles (post season 4 buff), volitile bullets, hellfire. But without OCs, driller is better on every mission type except maybe elimination. Even then sludge is useful to slow dreads to a crawl.

    Never would have though that driller and gunner are considered similar. But I am a green beard with bits of gray showing.
    I was leaning heavily towards the driller and he's as close to a "main" as one can get in DRG where all classes are fun (and , to me at least, seem balanced) because even though every dwarf has a pickaxe the drills are amazing, I mean, look at the POWER of those things. But they suffer heavily in places with many holes and verticality.
    On the other hand I do like the whole zipline thing but it often feels like the ammo is very limited compared to other classes' utilities.

    Honestly I disagree with the gunner being the end all be all damage and crowd control class. Engineer and driller are also capable of great damage output. What gunner truly specialises in is is sustained, reliable damage output. He achives this through his primary weapons, which usually share four common attributes, high total ammo reserve, being able to fire for a long amount of time without reloading, reliability across longer ranges and being efficient against many enemy types. The minigun is the embodiment of these traits, under most surcamstances, no matter what you are shooting or at what range, your target will take atleast significant damage, be it horde or big foe and you can fire the minigun for a long time without stop. Even the shield synergises with the idea of sustained fire, you place it down so you keep shooting when surrounded by bugs instead of running away. Of course there are a lot of ways to play gunner with so many overclocks and mods in the game, but without overclocks this is the role which gunner falls in to on the team, and even most over clocks still retain this role. But, my tangent aside, cool video, I like analytical videos like this one.

    I love the gunner but chose to main the driller because I get lost easily. That being said the shield is hella more clutch than anything in DRG. also the gunner can just hang around with his zipline while there is a ton of glyphids running around trying to get them.

    Honestly, i think driller is better because one thing: getting to the drop pod. You can get to the drop pod faster than you can as gunner because you have drills

    With damage i agree with you, but I don't think it is that hard to choose who wins because of the crowd control. I feel like the gunner deals good damage on single targets, but with the driller you just need to take your primary and spray in a crowd.

    Super niche comment, but Driller is best for Sabotage missions. His flamethrower one shots most bots as they take heaps of damage from being set a light.
    And for the final boss, the C4 can knock out all four shields in one go, and the impact axes one shot the tentacle arms

    Only having played this game for the last month i can honestly say if neither one of these guys is on the team its usually a tough one. I prefer the gunner being there on the higher hazard levels for obvious reasons, but certain missions i feel the driller is just a must have.

    I feel like you gave the driller too much credit in the last category. Status effects are good but they only get you so far. A gunner will kill a target much faster than a driller with any of his weapons and on higher tiers of difficulty you NEED to be killing enemies as rapidly as possible. Not to mention that status effects do not work on dreadnaughts and other boss types enemies. Which severely limits the drillers potential in those scenarios. Likewise in most machine events the driller is no better than the gunner. In fact the driller suffers during the OMEN tower because most of his weapons are not effective at targeting weak points.
    I feel like the gunner edges out the driller in overall effectiveness. In most cases his drills are convenient more than a must have tool. In a horde survival shooter being able to not only rapidly kill hordes, bosses and safely revive teammates with a bubble shield is just too useful to ignore.
    The gunner can do everything the driller can do but drill. And the driller can do everything the gunner can do but shield teammates and rapibdly defeat bosses. Both have their niches but there's really only one mission type gunner suffers in while driller struggles to keep up in both dreadnaught hunts and sabotage missions.
    But that's just a gunner mains opinion. Yes I am biased lol.

    Driller is equal to the damage output as Gunner if close range. He's close range Gunner but with drill. Just like how scout is engineer but more mobile and has godtier flares minus the cool automatic gun.

    The driller is ideal for taking out the horde when they get close, while the gunner is ideal for thinning them out from medium and long range.
    The driller has more utility with their tools, the drills and the c4, but the gunner leans heavier on raw firepower, making him a massive asset during a swarm.
    Overall, both fill somewhat similar roles during combat, but driller specializes in close quarters, anti-horde combat with a better ability to get the team from point a to b.
    So it really depends at what time during the game we are judging them. During a swarm you could argue the gunner is the bigger asset, but at other times driller's utility is certainly more useful to the team.
    At the end of the day, both serve similar yet distinct enough roles to ensure what little overlap they do have doesnt make either feel useless, and their builds can be altered to move either closer to a similar role as the other or even further away (especially driller with his options like the the cryo cannon and the sludge pump giving driller more single target / long range options like the gunner).

    Driller is my most played among the dwarves but I still have issues against caretakers purely because outside axes and C4, I don't have ways to quickly punch through the vents or Eyes quickly on my own. Ice spear for a Cryo Cannon feels like the only high burst they have for bossing, dreqdnaughts being tanky jerks you can't set on fire, and your primary weapons not really having range or impact against a caretaker (I don't have ice spear yet so I'm mostly using axes, C4, and my secondary weapon to slowly chip away at caretakers)
    Gunner may be slow but at least I'm not stuck taking a long time dismantling caretakers, and a decent line up can quickly chew through a dreadnaught, but how slow he is and how slow the ziplines are (on top of the very limited zip line ammo) makes it hard to really get anywhere quickly on his own (unless its a zip line going downhill)

      have you tried dropping the c4 on top of the caretaker from a hole in the ceiling? even without an aoe built c4 you can hit all the vents at once...

    Although the gunner is great and lays down a ton of fire power, the Drillers elemental damage and being the only character that has 4 weapons in addition to being the only character to heal himself with the vampire perk via and cryo cannon with his pickaxe, drills, and his axe grenade, makes him a far superior class.

    i appreciate the effort put in the video... but i feel like comparing those 2 is like comparing potatos with cherrys. gunner excells at defending and preventing damage on his teammates by stunning, fearing enemies or just straight out shielding teammates. he can do both: clear lots of trash and/or easily take out high value targets even on long ranges. while driller is pretty mobile and has great terrain editing but only realy targets close range trash as he has great armor ignoring AoE. But his options for other and benefiting from enemy weakpoints is very lacklustering. So since the driller realy doesn't need to care at all where he aims at enemys, since all his primary weapons ignore both armor and weakpoints, his primary weapons are definitly the easiest do use for new dwarfs.

    As a driller main, I will say that he can be applied to nearly any situation and have a solution for it. He excels at big swarms and has options for tanky enemies such as axes and cyro cannon while basically being able to solve any terrain issue like a cliff, gap, or hole safely albeit sometimes slowly. There really isn't a situation where I can say driller struggles besides maybe the caretaker fight and dreadnoughts. Even then, you still have options like sludge pump to massively slow down the dreadnoughts to a crawl so its easy to get behind them or freeze them with cyro and the caretaker vent's can be taken care of with c4 pretty effectively and I've noticed that sludge pump does surprisingly amount of damage against the caretaker. A lot more than I expected at least.
    Gunner is my second most played class but you realized how annoying it can be to transverse the terrain at times and while your ability to mow down huge swarms and tanky targets effectively is good, You'll see that its not necessary after you start getting better with the movement of the game and using the transversal tools mid-combat or prep time. Gunner is fun to just point and click and watch something die but I do have to admit that he's probably the least essential class if you were to sacrifice one.
    I enjoyed this video though you probably want to start off with saying what you said at 11:18 at the beginning to clear up some miscommunication right off the bat. The title could rub some people the wrong way because I know it did with me. I didn't really comparing classes and seeing who was better myself.

    You undermined the shield so much, it's got 1 very good use aside from saving runs and giving some breathing room when the whole room is crawling with shit. It's the only thing in the game capable of redirecting both bulks and dreadnoughts via fear, even if they are fear immune. This is especially useful for bulks in smaller tunnels

    Rethinking the versatiliy comparison, I would also factor in combat versatility, while traversal is important, you just kinda focused only on that. So let me say... Gunner is the class who is usually prepared for the most situations: he has fast firerate or AoE with his primaries letting him deal with groups decently, a lot of possible damage output if he is allowed to keep shooting a weakpoint, options to deal with armor, accurate secondaries and okay range with primaries, and should he ever be caughted off guard, his shield provides more than enough time and space. He's the jack of all trades, and master of heavy continuous fire. So while an unexpected korlok sprout/dreadnough wave or a prospector may beat a dwarf who just stumbled upon it. Gunner can always put up a fight. Then you have driller, he's okay but his close range limits his versatility. His secondaries don't easily take care of a distant spitter or a menace. Unless he has the specific impact axes or sludge pump build for direct DPS, he struggles against large heavy enemies, and can have so much different loadouts that have chnage his pros and cons, that he really can't handle Everything, and while gunner Can be build to specialize more into something and be bad at other things, most of his weapons/build options are the good-at-it-all type

    Driller is a safe class with his biggest weakness being single target damage. It's not that you can't do it only that it's hard. He's also good in solo play since you can bypass terrain hazards.
    Gunner is NOT solo friendly. You can't get around a cave quickly, terrain is just as much your enemy as the bug's at time and oil refinary will be your bane of existence. His is hard to meet on other classes in both AOE or single target. He's also the only class that can kill bulk detonator on hazard 5 four player difficulty in 5 seconds of spawning just by throwing 2or3 grenades.
    The classes fill different roles but I will say Gunner will make you the better player because you simply have no easy way to solve your problems. You HAVE to learn how to move around cave's that you have no knowledge of on the fly in creative ways. The other classes just make you better at that class and most have some way to just ignore the same problems

    I think comparing classes is just… wrong. The game is designed in a way that all the classes have an equally important role in the team balance, and also just made so people can choose any class they want and still be effective.
    Still a great video, I just think the concept is wrong.

    For me it's not a close call at all. Imagine u got the other 2 and can only bring either of these. Gunner brings a bit dmg, that the other 2 can do well. Driller has no real single target dmg, but all that utility freezing. Must have on refine and sabotage missions while gunner is not mandatory on any. Also bout the weapons I only felt good with the gunner with neuro payload with the big magazine mod. After the oc change all weapons don't fell that great to me, while freezing is just the best with microwaves. On sabotage fire to one shot towers and boss arms while you're standing on top of him throwing c4. There the gunner can do good at the eye phase, but skipping the spiny phase with driller is way more important. I mostly play scout for all but for this missions I always play driller cause he's so important and I don't want a random messing that up. This comparison is a bit nonsense anyways, but if I'd do this straight up the driller is lightyears ahead

    As someone who has prestiged at least twice on every class, my thoughts are as follows:
    Scout:
    Movement is selfish, with decent support utility with the ceiling flares. Weapons are extremely raw in terms of sheer practicality.
    Engineer:
    Generous movement ability, usually helpful for those that come after he's been through. Turrets are great for support during waves or point defense, and guns are just a bit more raw in terms of being able to still solo.
    Gunner:
    Movement, even his selfless, is slow. But it is important as infrastructure for more complex caves. His shield is great for clutching fights, or at least quickly getting people back into pitched fights. Guns are fantastic, and make up for his lack of mobility, especially if you're clever during certain niche fights. (i.e.; Shooting down at enemies from ziplines during boss fights, or using the missile pods to destroy the crystals during drilldoser missions)
    Driller:
    While Scout's movement is objectively faster, the Driller's movement is selfless, and makes paths that are objectively faster for the party. His C4 is awesome, cause of it's versatility. (I use it more for movement or resource gathering than fights, usually) But equally, unloading them all on a boss's weak spot is sure to do damage. Just a matter of keeping your allies out of the splash zone. His guns are great for initial and horde clearing, allowing a couple second burst to send resouces flying through the map from loot bugs. And while I'm not the proudest of his pistols, they're still great for ranged accuracy, like for dealing with the gunk seeds in the distance, or taking out fester fleas.
    All in all, my list of favorites is as follows:
    Solo-play:
    1. Scout 2. Driller 3. Engineer 4. Gunner
    Team-play:
    1. Driller 2. Gunner 3. Engineer 4. Scout

    My humble take at the gunner is that it's really fun to use but besides the shield that can save you or your teammates, there is no real reason to run a gunner since all the other classes can do what the gunner does and even better.

    If we compare either class in the hands of a good player, then the Driller wins hands down. Even here, half of the benefits of the Gunner is how simple and easy it is, but once a player is good enough and experienced in the game, that simplicity to pickup isn't a factor anymore.
    The other way I look at it is if we have a party of 3 dwarves, each with different classes, which would I be most fine with not having, and that's the Gunner. And I say this as someone that doesn't like playing Driller.
    None of this is to say that the Gunner is bad ofc. But it provides the least benefit to the squad, imo.

    As someone who plays both and have never played hazard 5. I don't see how gunner could be better. Unless I don't find nitra I haven't had any problem killing bugs and traversing the map is a breeze. I enjoy both and maybe gunner is exponentially better at hazard 5 but my vote goes to driller.

      If you have the right setup, gunner is by far the most ammo efficient class in the game. Neurotoxin autocannon and extended duration electric trail coil gun is very much the "I can do this all day!" build. Won't do the most DPS, so not necessarily the best for dealing with heavy targets. But it absolutely manhandles swarms on its own. If you feel up for bunker shenanigans, the coil gun can damn near solo and entire wave.
