Excellent, thorough video. I had been reluctant to attempt this on my own (paid my pool service guys to do it last time) for fear of the filter leaking all over the place when I put everything back together. But after watching your video, I decided to risk a DIY attempt. I particularly appreciated your advice about knocking each side of the eight clamps when you're putting the lid back on -- definitely gives you a tighter seal. Absolutely zero leaks. I started using just a very modest-pressure harden hose (fearful of damaging the filter material using a pressure washer). But ultimately I used both -- first low pressure to get probably 90% of the buildup, and then the pressure washer (a couple feet away) for spot-cleaning the tough spots. Whole job probably took 90 minutes, mostly because my filters were VERY dirty. Once I started everything back up, I checked the suction pressure at the vacuum head in the skimmer basket. WOW -- what a difference! Probably 2 or 3 times the volume throughput!
@@SPL Just cleaned out my filter again this afternoon, and rewatched your video for a quick reminder of "the little things" like knocking each side of the 8 clamps with your fist back and forth a few times to ensure a good seal. Dispensed with the garden hose this time and went straight to the pressure washer -- that saved some time. Thanks for the reminder to add silicone lubricant to the giant "O" ring. Mine's still looking good after 20 years.
Great video right to the point and no small talk. Just so happy someone out there like to just get right to it instead of all the long talk about the item ,where it came from, what is is for and who invented it. Thank you.
Very helpful video. A couple of tips. When you take out the inner filter, cover the hole at the bottom of the tank. That will prevent debris entering the pipes that lead to the pool. Or you can take the outer filter out of the holder when you wash it, so when you rinse it, debris doesn't get into the pipes. My other piece of advice is use a rubber ballot to tap the locks as you screw them tight. Much more effective than using your hand. And less painful.
I do about 200 filter cleanings and breakdowns each year so it is like second nature to me now. But I have made all the rookie mistakes; like adding DE while the filter is in backwash mode still (very messy as the grids fill with DE and then when you put it in filter mode all the DE shoots out into pool). Leaving the timer on and seeing water running all over the place and realizing that the pool is draining out of the filter, fast! And a few others... oops.
Great video. I have been cleaning my filter myself for years but decided to check in as far as ideas. I will take your advice on cleaning the big filter in place as it definitely is heavy when wet and dirty plus an awkward lift.
I realize this is an old listing but it is very helpful. One tip, go ahead and fully remove both cartridges. While rinsing both inside and outside, tilt the cartridge towards the outlet at the bottom. This will get rid of that little bit of silt that blows out upon restarting the pump.
Excellent video, bought a new house, this is there... had no idea what I was looking at lol. This helps alot, coming from a 21ft above ground with a simple sand filter you can backwash.
These particular filter cartridges seem to last a long time. I have several accounts where they are over 10 years old or older. The only time you need to change them in my opinion (manufacturer will disagree) is when the pleats are spread out and the cartridge is not hosing off clean anymore. If you notice a drop in water clarity or filtration suction then it is time also, but I find these to be very durable. Like everything they are cheaper online - $317.00 free shipping for both - Google it ;)
If the filter is off I will turn it on and then open the air relief on top to let the air out. Also when you remove the drain plug in this filter it depressurizes. This is actually one of the safest filters I know of.
Love the channel!!! You always have the answers I need. Quick question about this filter. The pentair owners manual says to use 2”pvc. My plumbing is 1 1/2. And from what I see online you cannot swap the filter fittings to 1 1/2. Do you see an issue using 2” pvc from the filter and then using reducing bushings to 1 1/2 for the rest of the plumbing. Or should I just go with a Clean and Clear cartridge filter. I’ve read good things about the System 3 and I leave my pool uncovered in the winter and not having to clean these filters at all in the winter would be huge.
My pool tech told me the first thing I have to do is bleed the air out of the PSI Gauge line before I open up the bottom drain valve. This bleed was at the end of the video as the last step instead... Thoughts?
Thanks for your helpful review. I just purchased a new house and they have this system. Now my 8 clips are locked on, the guy who opened our pool said they had to be put on very tight. What size wrench should I get to remove these? Sta-Rite Industries has a bunch of different Omnifilter wrenches, but I am not sure which one would work. OmniFilter OW1 Filter Wrench???
The pool tech gave me a helpful tip. My Sta-Rite System/3 gave out because a bad pool brush had been used at the bottom of the pool (cheap plastic needles that fell off and clogged the system). He recommends a stainless steel pool brush to avoid this.
Hey, thanks for video. Just sent it to one of my newer guys .. question, ive been in the business for 19 years and have never seen the silicone spray used on O rings.... love the idea, but never had any issues? We always use magic lube, but no mess on fingers sounds amazing.
Thanks so much of your videos -- I have learned so much! I have had this sta-rite filter system for many years, but now have a problem -- I am replacing the filter cartridges -- the smaller old filter pulls out fine, but the bigger old filter is stuck at the bottom where it connects. I have tried wiggling, yanking, prying, but can't get it out. I'm afraid if I really force it, that doing so might break that little plastic piece on the side that disperses the inflow of water from hitting the filter directly. Do you have any advice for how to pry this thing out? I could cut try cutting down the filter into pieces with a saw, but that sounds quite hard too. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!
In the bottom there is an o-ring. I bet that has expanded in there. If you leave the lid off for a day and let the Sun completely dry everything out you should be able to pull it off when dry. See if that does it.
Funny, I have a System 3 but my DE filter is totally different. Its a one piece but the center is much smaller. Its about $500 if you need to replace it so I usually repair it. I found the o-ring for $30 at Amazon.
Robert, I have the same DE filter - the one piece one. I'm on my 7th year with it now, and getting a DE on the bottom of the pool. I hope the filter isn't shot. Going to tear the whole thing down again for a cleaning and re-assembly even though I just opened the pool for the season two weeks ago. Question - how many years have you been using the same filter now? They are $455 on Amazon currently. I was hoping to get a few more years than just 7 out of it.
How much water is stored in the filter and how long does it take to drain out? When i removed the plug, the water flowed out for over a minute. I got worried i didn't turn off all the valves, so i put the plug back on. But, the water had to be turned off, because I then removed the pump cover/basket and no water flowed out.
great DIY instructions! do you think the blowback can be avoided by switching the waste valve on during initial start-up after cleaning the filters? thx!
How long should my filter cartridges last? Is there a length of time I should expect? I have this same system as shown in the video. We bought a house 5 years ago and the previous owner told me they were expensive and he replaced them recently. I'm wondering if it is time to replace. If so, where is the best, most economical, place to shop for them. I am in northern California. Thanks.
My personal opinion, change the whole filter system out to a sand filter if you can. You will save yourself so much hassle. I worked with this exact system about ten years ago and it was a nightmare. Water constantly cloudy despite constantly cleaning them, it would always lose suction, and the replacement cartridges were very expensive.
Those air bleeders are pretty weak. It takes awhile for that tank to fill up with water and sometimes it doesn't fill all the way to the top depending on your pump size. I wouldn't worry about it. The air will just go into the return lines and eventually clear up on it's own.
just bought a house with a pool with this filtering in your video. it's fairly new and has a rock waterfall. I want the vacuum on in the pool, how do I turn it on? their is some dirt and little leaves and I just want to run the vacuum.
+Jennifer Abapo What kind of cleaner does the pool have attached to it? Usually when you turn on the system the pool cleaner will start up unless it has a problem.
David knows that checking that pump basket is an important first step; otherwise, you might wonder why nothing's happening when you turn on the pump and add the filter powder to the skimmer. If you've got a pump trap basket full of leaves, etc. you're going to have a lot of fun cleaning out the 'mud' in it when the filter powder gets there.
Remove it and depending on brand use a threaded on stand or bucket. Usually in the manual it lets you know the muriatic acid to water mixture. You can pull them up online ,- the salt cell manual.
I did what you did in your video and the it all worked fine for about 3 days...then I found the pump running but not pumping its full of water and I can see water moving slow....then I let some air in and turn it on and it works fine. Then I checked it out the next night and back doing the same thing. What do I do.
I have a starite system 3 and noticed you mentioned a retrofit kit that was easier to work with. I can barely lift the original filters out and was wondering if you thought the retrofit would be better for me to lift; and where can I get it?
Great videos. Question for you - I have this same filter and currently it's leaking where the elbow and bulkhead assembly passes through the wall of the filter. The small o ring there looks ok and I put silicone on it, but still leaking. Any ideas? Is there some way this piece can fault and create a leak? Thanks.
I would say order a new o-ring. There is a lot of water pressure in the filter so the o-ring even a little worn will leak - even with silicone. A new o-ring should do the trick.
Great video, thanks! Question though.... I just cleaned mine for the first time (just moved) and there was a lot of white "clay" kinda of substance built up on the filter.... Like 2-3mm and followed by dirt layer. Any idea what that is? Thanks!
I see that a lot with these filters. I think the way they are designed allows the dirt to stick on there and turn to a clay like substance. I wouldn't worry about it - just dirt.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thanks! I was thinking it's some chemical additives in the water that were filtered out. I'll find out 100% next time I wash it as I'm not planning to add much chemicals
Silly question, but how the hell do you get the o-ring back on? I was just cleaning the filters and the large o-ring came off. I cleaned it etc. but every time I get it about 1/24 of the way back on, the opposite side flies off. It is maddening. Any suggestions? I don't remember it being this difficult in the past.
you wouldn't happen to have a video on the DE filter grid version of this model would you? went to clean a filter today and did not understand the mechanics of this particular filter lol
I don't - just the cartridge version. But I have cleaned that version before. The trick is to just hose it off in the tank if possible and only take the grids apart if there is a tear.
What about opening the smaller Sta-Rite D.E. filters that have a ring around the casing? I always have difficulty opening these and everyone says popping the top by turning the motor on is effective but seems like an accident waiting to happen. Any advice? Can't seem to find videos with smaller Sta-Rite's.
Question, I have about 6 of these filters on my route, 4 cartridge and 2 DE. None of them go more than 1 month before needing to be cleaned, the rest of the filters on my route (FNS, 4000, Pro Grid, etc) easily go 6 months until they need a clean. Have you had this similar experience with this Sta Rite system?
It's possible the filter elements are bad. Most customers and pool pros try not to change these out because they cost a fortune. So maybe they are all due for new elements.
The pressure on my System 3 filter was running only 3 lbs. My pool service cleaned the filters yesterday and now the pressure gauge is at 0 lbs. when the pump is running. The pool service man said that he thought it might be the pump, but that doesn't make since to me. It seems to me that there should be some indication of pressure when the pump is running. Any suggestions?? Thank you.
@@SPL thanks! Just did mine today and was filthy! Very heavy cartridges so had friend help and got the job done. My o-ring is ok but will need to be replaced this year so have to do that as well.
I have the same pool filtration system but mine is very old and it has high pressure its at 21 and i cant move the little circle thing with a screw driver because its so old what do i do?
I have a similar filter. I want to vacuum the bottom of a dirty pool and waste our the water. Can I run it with the drain plug out? Is that the way to vacuum and waste out?
Cool! Are you familiar witht he System2? I'm looking to get a PLM150, which I think is a cartridge filter tank, but I want to switch out the inside filter to a System 2 PLDE(DE). Is this possible? Thank you for your insight!
UnknownHandle UnknownHandle Not sure if it is possible. I would call the manufacturer - I think the inside is the same although DE and cartridge filters usually reverse the intake line into the filter so not 100% sure.
YES, you can change a PLM150 to a PLDE. I have a PLM200 which I changed over to a PLDE 75. Make sure to get the rubber flapper that sits over the intake, this prevents the water flowing into the filter housing from dislodging the DE Powder. Also I would advise getting the internal spring loaded check valve for the return line hole in the base of the filter, this prevents the DE powder from entering the pool when you open the filter.
@@SPL I'm not an expert but if you have a skimmer basket at the pool...once you get below that you'd be sucking air through the basket? But no problem if you just have excess water due to big rain....correct me if I'm wrong.
Great video; I was able to follow step by step and clean a pool filter that hadn't been opened and cleaned for more than 11 years!! Worked just fine -- Ha! never saw the crawly move so fast! Now, my problem is a complete lack of vortex and no suction--any ideas anyone??
If your cleaner is moving for a few seconds and then stops because the pump loses it's prime (no suction) then their is air getting into the pump from somewhere. If you unhook the cleaner and the pump fires right up then it is a suction leak for sure. Look for any water leaks around the pump. A primary suspect is the pump lid o-ring. I have a playlist on isolating the exact problem. ruclips.net/p/PL784D975AEA898B07 Hope that helps. 11 years... wow
Hi, the air release valve on my System 3 is leaking water (dripping when fully tighten). How do I replace the air release valve? Do I have it drain the filter system first?
Just make sure it is off and you can just change out the top air relief valve. Pretty simple. Maybe add some teflon tape to the existing one but it probably is stripped out.
warning...I wouldn't slam the filters around...the bottom can crack near the riser connector ring...and then you get to buy another one. you won't know it is cracked until you get no filtering from your pool.
Has anyone ever used a low-pressure pressure washer to clean their cartridge? I'd like to because it would be a more thorough clean, but I'm afraid I could blast a hole through the filters lol.
+Dcc357 I use this one attached to a garden hose and it works great. Been using this model for years: www.walmart.com/ip/Orbit-Zinc-Sweeper-Nozzle-with-Shut-Off/16777991
+Dcc357 Not advised by manufacturer - typical max PSI for a garden hose is 80 PSI. 1600 PSI will likely rip right through the filter media. Like lighting a cigarette with a flame thrower ;).
Do you have a video of how to get sand and debris off the bottom of an inground pool? I have this filter and this video really helped me. Found this but don't how to get the sand out. ruclips.net/video/wj4LCbmC9rM/видео.html
Literally the most awful filter design I’ve seen. Regular cartridge and de filters are so much better. Well ok not quad de filters those suck. Awesome video though!
Good video, but if you do this, pay better attention to details than this guy did. Take both filters all the way out & wash them thoroughly, Power washer is helpful. Before you put filters back in, wash out the filter basin to get the dirt, algae & grime off the bottom. Also, pull the filter sealer ring all the way off. Wipe it down, along with the rim of the filter basin. Then spray the ring with silicone prior to putting the ring back on the rim. Wipe excess silicone off. When I turn the filter back on, I rarely get a shot of dirt spraying out of the line. Again, this is an informative video, but this guy is cutting some corners. If your pool guy cleans your pool/filters at this quality, find a better pool guy.
There really is no set normal pressure. It all depends on the pump size, the age of the cartridges and how your pools return lines are plumbed in. When it gets above 10 psi clean it. After 6 months if the gauge hasn't moved much still take it apart and clean it. Sometimes the PSI doesn't rise in these filters like the typical cartridge filter will do.
Heeey... 8 years old this video and still workin for people on 2021, I really appreciate your help!

I don't - just the cartridge version. But I have cleaned that version before. The trick is to just hose it off in the tank if possible and only take the grids apart if there is a tear.
Can you hook a Garden hose to the discharge and direct the flow of that water to a drain so as not to flood the immediate area
You could easily do that.
You make this look easy.
Don't you also have to bleed the top pressure gauge of the filter before cleaning? How does that work?
You can but that air bleeder is a total joke really.
@@SPL agree and wish they made smaller easier to clean filters! These are massive and heavy things!
Thank you.
Is there any suction in the skimmer? And is the pool return acting normal - basically is water flowing?
What brand of silicone spray are you using in the video? I need to pick some up!
Boss Silicone Spray. Any RV grade silicone spray will work.
@@SPL thanks! Just did mine today and was filthy! Very heavy cartridges so had friend help and got the job done. My o-ring is ok but will need to be replaced this year so have to do that as well.
I know it's heavy but you can avoid that blowback if you pull that bigger filter out and clean it also.
I have the same pool filtration system but mine is very old and it has high pressure its at 21 and i cant move the little circle thing with a screw driver because its so old what do i do?
Great Video but I have a S7D75 Filter that looks like this exactly but it say is has the Diatomaceous Earth With It ?? How Do I Do This Cleaning ?
You can remove the drain plug and hose it off in the tank if you like. Then recharge it with DE when done.
I have a similar filter. I want to vacuum the bottom of a dirty pool and waste our the water. Can I run it with the drain plug out? Is that the way to vacuum and waste out?
allteeth No, that won't work. You will have to vacuum and the clean the filter out.
+allteeth Just open the drain plug and spray it with the hose.
Very curious to know the brand of the silicone spray that you use?
Boss 615 Silicone spray. Very, very effective.
@@SPL Thank you very much I will find it. Greatly appreciate it once again.
What pressure should these be running at?
Typically 15- 20 PSI
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!
I'm not sure what you mean by cleaner? I wish I could attach some pictures so you could see what I'm talking about.
+Jennifer Abapo You can email photos to me thru my website: www.swimmingpoollearning.com/
I want to drain water from my pool with this filter. Can I just open the drain valve and turn the pump on? I have a hose attached to the valve
Yes. You can use the hose spigot on the equipment.
@@SPL I'm not an expert but if you have a skimmer basket at the pool...once you get below that you'd be sucking air through the basket? But no problem if you just have excess water due to big rain....correct me if I'm wrong.
Does this type need the powder?
No, but they do make a DE version. It will have square grids inside.
@@SPL thank you sir

Hope that helps. 11 years... wow
Thanks man. You saved me.
Thank you so much for this!!!
How often should you clean it?
Every 6 months is standard.
Hello. My pressure is at 0 after I replaced the filters. There is water leaking from the top. Any suggestions what to do? Thanks in advance
Sounds like the pressure gauge air relief is broken. Replace that part and you should be good.
Yep, what david said
Pentair 24850-0105 Valve and Gauge Assembly Replacement for Select Sta-Rite Pool and Spa Filters
by Pentair

warning...I wouldn't slam the filters around...the bottom can crack near the riser connector ring...and then you get to buy another one. you won't know it is cracked until you get no filtering from your pool.
Good tip.
After cleaning do you need to add DE?
No. This is not a. DE system.
I have this filter system. This is great.
Living in California. With no leaves and very little debris other than dust / dirt. How often would you recommend cleaning the filter?
Every 6 months is standard practice
@@SPL thanks
I can’t get water to come out from the pressure valve. Left there for hours
Those can get clogged. I bet that is what it is. I suggest getting this one and swapping it out. Pentair Air Relief Valve 98209800
@@SPL thx. Seem like I didn’t open the valve up all the way. Stupid of me. Really appreciate the quick response
What are the life spans of these types of filters?
The Cartridges inside are very long lasting. 6-8 years. The tank will survive thru a Nuclear Winter ;). Never had to replace one yet.
Thanks. That is what I was hoping to hear!
Great tip. Thanks.
Very helpful. Thank you!
my lid just blew for my filter housing new ones are 800$
The Sta-Rite parts are terribly expensive. I mean the o-ring is like $85.00
@@SPL found one on craiglist for 380$ got lucky this they even through in new clean filters
Why didn’t you recharge the filter with diatomaceous earth?
This is a cartridge filter so no DE needed
Awesome video..Much appreciated!
After cleaning my filter the top of the lid started leaking and I don't know why
You mean by the pressure gauge?
I read that the filters should be changed out after 2000 hrs. Service. Is that right?
only when needed. The cartridges last a very long time. If you notice flow o water quality issues then change them. They are expensive.
Thank you for the good tutorial video!)
Fabulous, Thank you!
Has anyone ever used a low-pressure pressure washer to clean their cartridge? I'd like to because it would be a more thorough clean, but I'm afraid I could blast a hole through the filters lol.
+Dcc357 I use this one attached to a garden hose and it works great. Been using this model for years:
www.walmart.com/ip/Orbit-Zinc-Sweeper-Nozzle-with-Shut-Off/16777991
I meant like a 1600 PSI electric or gas pressure washers lol. 1600 PSI is the lowest pressure one I found at lowe's
+Dcc357 Not advised by manufacturer - typical max PSI for a garden hose is 80 PSI. 1600 PSI will likely rip right through the filter media. Like lighting a cigarette with a flame thrower ;).
I use one all the time 1700 psi. Our filters are over 10 years old.
Thank you!!!
Thank you my ninja
Thank you for this video. :)
Clean the filters better and it won’t squirt dirt into the pool
I posted to your facebook.
Wow, in a white shirt no less.
Next up a filter clean in a tuxedo. 😜👊
you saved my life xoxoxoxox
Do you have a video of how to get sand and debris off the bottom of an inground pool? I have this filter and this video really helped me.
Found this but don't how to get the sand out.
ruclips.net/video/wj4LCbmC9rM/видео.html
Yes - you will need to manually vacuum your pool with a hose and a vacuum head attached to your pool pole
@@SPL Do I need to open the white drain hole? That sand won't clog the filter? That's what I'm confused about. Thanks. : )
Literally the most awful filter design I’ve seen. Regular cartridge and de filters are so much better. Well ok not quad de filters those suck. Awesome video though!
Yeah, the engineer went wild here. 😜
What?!? Did you just fire me ;).

What is the normal pressure the run this filter at and at what pressure should I clean the filter?
There really is no set normal pressure. It all depends on the pump size, the age of the cartridges and how your pools return lines are plumbed in. When it gets above 10 psi clean it. After 6 months if the gauge hasn't moved much still take it apart and clean it. Sometimes the PSI doesn't rise in these filters like the typical cartridge filter will do.
@@SPL On a variable speed pump this will very right?
Super helpful thanks!
