Taking JJ 10th in the draft doesn’t guarantee success and need I remind people that the success rate or a QB drafted in the 1st round is 30%-46% depending on the source and how success is defined. Except for two games Darnold has played like a top #10 QB and given that JJ hasn’t played one down of meaningful football in the NFL people need to stop anointing JJ the starting QB for next season. What is wrong with a QB sitting, growing, and continuing to learn for years, after all that plan has worked for the Packers for decades!
I know. Everyone think he is just going to step in and be awesome. He is obviously injury prone. Came from an offense that ran the ball 50 % of the time. Now we also hope he doesn’t get gun shy after watching Darnold step in and do what he has done. Can he mentally handle having high expectations laid on him? Time will tell.
I measured the 1st round QBs using these parameters (2000-2020) - at least 60 starts, more than 1 TD per game, at least 2 TDs to 1 INT, win loss record over .500 and came out with 50% of 1st rounders succeeding - Trubisky, Bridgewater, Jameis, Cutler falling under. Only 5% of QBs taken after the 1st round met this criteria, so my biggest conclusion was if you aren't taking a guy in the 1st, don't take one, unless you are specifically looking for a cheap back up.
100% agree, and folks are completely overlooking the option to run last year's plan again - with Sam now as the high performing bridge, but also Sam's trade value growing significantly with each game. Kwesi is a Wall St dealer and will be thinking about Darnold and Jones as assets that he has bought low, and how he can take a profit from the new value. I'd bet there is zero chance that Kwesi lets Sam walk in FA for nothing. Zero. At worst he tags him for $41m and trades him some time next season. Draft picks can be very valuable. Jefferson's first 5 seasons cost $21m, his next 4 seasons will cost $150m... Extending Sam for $35m is chump change compared to the 2 or 3 picks he could get in a trade from some QB needy team. The other team would probably pick up half of the $35m anyway if the trade was before the deadline. Some folks just can't think past the play on the field.
Yeah? And who plays in the secondary next year? Not one starter has a contract past this season. Sam is playing somewhere else next season. The only question is do they tag and trade him or satisfy themselves with a 2026 comp pick.
I never like being beholden to a QB who gets you far in the playoffs one year if he was not "the guy" for your team initially. That said, if Sammy D gets you to the NFC A Champion game or the SB, I think you have to keep him at least one more year. I'd franchise him and give him big money for only that next year. If he performs again, then we can talk about a multi year contract worth some coin. We have seen it too many times a "backup" has one great year that gets paid way too much on a long contract to turn out to be what he always was, a backup.
A starting QB that gives Minnesota a solid backup for practically nothing. Giants are paying him, Minnesota is paying league minimum, Vikings punter makes more. I doubt he’ll even play since Darnold has been solid.
Back ups are for injury. The Vikes got caught last season. Everything past that is a bargain. Kwesi bought Sam for $10m now he's worth $30m+. He bought Jones for $300k and and he's already worth $10m plus. It will be interesting to see how Kwesi takes his profit. He's a Wall St wheeler and dealer.

It doesn't make any sense from a financially to give away an asset that you've grown from $10m to $35m for nothing in FA??? The Panthers gave up a 4th, 2nd, 6th to the Jets for Sam. Russ got two 1sts, two 2nds and 3 players, Watson was three 1sts and three day 3 picks. Sam is likely worth multiple top 50 picks at least already. The same argument applies to Jones. He is worth at least $10m on the back up market next season, and Kwesi just got him for $300k. I think Kwesi will definitely extend Darnold, and maybe Jones as well. It gives them so many options. Even if they gave Sam $70m for 2 years and Jones $10m as a backup - they'll still be spending less on their QB than half the league - and they'll have 3 QBs that might ALL be better than the starters at 6 or 8 teams. They could trade Sam to a team that misses out on a QB on draft night, and roll with Jones as a bridge and back up. They could roll with Sam as a bridge again and trade him before the deadline to a contender whose QB goes down. The Vikes lost Kirk in week 8 last season. The Cowboys, Raiders and Browns lost their starters this season. They could trade Jones before the 2025 trade deadline.
