    I drove a 52 1/2 ton straight 6 3 on the tree pulling a 2 horse trailer with a quarter horse and a welch pony when I was 16 I'm now 63 my sister and I took it within a 50 mile radius of the house wasn't fast but it pulled it.

  • @Radiowild
    @Radiowild 9 месяцев назад +3

    The first vehicle I drove was a 53 Chevy 3100 1/2 ton truck with the 216. Like your truck, the starter was on the floor next to the gas pedal. Yours has a modern switch on the dash. My father duct tape pieces of 2x4's so my nine year old body could reach the pedals. Drove it behind my house with strict rules that I could only use reverse and first. After a month, I was doing donuts in third gear on wet grass.

    • @carlv8168
      @carlv8168 9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, because a V8 replaced that truck's original inline six, so the floor starter was no longer an option.

    • @What.its.like.
      @What.its.like.  9 месяцев назад

      The previous owner got rid of the starter on the floor because he was tired of hitting it with his foot while driving I didn’t know what he meant until I drove one that had a starter on the floor and I could I totally got why he did it..
      Thank you so much for sharing those memories I’m glad that this drive could bring those back to you =) I hope you had a merry Christmas and a happy new year

      @@What.its.like. Wait, that doesn't sound logical. I owned 3 of these trucks with the six cyl engine and floor starter. At no time did they get in the way of my foot while driving. By design, the starter on the sixes is on the right-hand side of the engine, and the starter pedal is connected mechanically to a yoke above the bell housing that pushes the starter bendix to engage it. When you install a V8, you can no longer use the floor starter configuration because of the position and location of the V8 starter doesn't even come close to aligning with any of the linkage anymore.

  • @josephgaviota

    So similar, and yet so different from my '55 Chevy pickup.
    Mine only had the stock inline-6, and 3-on-the-tree. I added overdrive because it was wound out at like 55 mph.

    • @What.its.like.
      @What.its.like.  9 месяцев назад

      That’s the problem with all the trucks before 1975 that are 1 ton classification they don’t go over 55 doesn’t matter how many gears they have my truck has a 373 rear end highway speed it can run that all day long I get pretty good gas mileage to.. I would love to put a two speed rear ended it put a 290 with 373I think I could get even better gas mileage if I did that but I don’t see that happening anytime soon

    • @ernielaw
      @ernielaw 9 месяцев назад +1

    Thanks for the ride Jay 😁Folks who've never driven an old car or truck with a long high hood don't understand that you can't see any part of the right front fender, which is a bit disconcerting till you get used to it. You know it's there but you're not sure of exactly where till you hit something 😝If you open the cowl vent at speed with a dirty floor you create your own dust storm inside 🤣And if the door latches are worn the door can fly open when cornering unless you lock it, which becomes a habit after awhile. Many of these old trucks also have the gas tank behind the seat inside the cab which gives you pause for thought about the consequences of crashing 🤨 You sit high in the seat, sort of like a kitchen chair, and you bounce around over bumps. Almost as much fun as an amusement park ride!
    I had a 52 Ford F1. Somebody butchered in a 302 2V with a C4 automatic and a floor shifter before I got it. The motor mounts were extended with flat plates and bolts which had to be tightened weekly or the engine would twist and draw the throttle wide open all by itself which led to me gaining quick reflexes in turning the key off and some interesting moments in motoring. I ordered the chassis parts from JC Whitney who were the only source I could find for shock absorbers, weatherstripping, and a lot of other things. It started with a turn and a half play in the steering box; luckily a small-town Ford dealer nearby had all the parts to rebuild it in stock from ages before; the steering shaft was about 5 feet long and had to go in from underneath which meant raising the front end about four feet high. The original cloth-covered wiring under the dash caught fire when I was driving it home from the car lot. A buddy and me rewired the entire truck in about an hour. After a couple years looking I couldn't find a fixable RF fender which was crumpled badly (and the LF wasn't much better) so I sold it. Oh the memories, and they weren't all good but it was fun to drive anyway 😎

      I prefer to see the hood of anything that I’m driving and then I just remembered that the bumper is at least another 6 inches give or take beyond the furthest point that I can see.. But I’ve owned a couple land yachts so maybe that’s why I prefer that the new cars you can’t see the hood because it slopes down and can’t really see what’s in front of you

Going 75 mph in one of these classic beasts still sounds a bit like a hair raising adventure! 🐗 😊. Over hills and over dales we go!! I'll check out the comparison, though I have to say, $100,000 trucks must be on the Rolls Royce end of things. Yes when I bought the truck he had a 327 in at the 216 or 235 was long gone the 327 was out of a school bus I couldn’t get any parts for it so I ended up just selling the block and all the other components for scrap essentially I bought a 350 v8 that came out of a dump truck that the body just rotted off of I think I paid $400 for the engine I bought a transmission that came off of a 1959 Apache SM 420 unit I only paid $250 for that so $650 I had a engine and transmission..,That’s the greatest thing about General Motors is any engine any transmission will work as long as it’s within the family
      The 350 was out of a 1986 dump truck it had like three smog pump on it it’s not a very powerful V8 it’s only 150 hp but it’s it’s enough I didn’t want to update everything else the truck has a 373 rear end it will go 80 miles an hour and I get 20 miles to the gallon I got 19.5 radial tires on it as well
