Kikuchi 100 times over. It is the proper feeling for the series based off of the old 60's and 70's Kung Fu movies.

The problem with the Kikuchi score in Kai isn't how it sounds, as I always loved his score the most. The problem is that Yamamoto's score was designed for Kai while Kikuchi's score in the show always felted slapped in at the last second, which as far as I can tell, might actually be the case. Sometimes it can work, such as the first piece of music for Bardock's scene, but not so much for the second piece of music. Similar feelings for Goku vs Vegeta, which also uses the same track funnily enough. It also doesn't help that Kikuchi's score tend to have music that's on the shorter side, so they have to get two tracks in the scene or extend a track (which to be fair, the latter was done in the original show multiple times) in order to fill out the scene while Yamamoto's tracks don't have that issue.
If anything, it just made me wish that if they had to replace Yamamoto's tracks with Kikuchi's, they took a little bit more of their time and tried to find more fitting pieces (and maybe use some that weren't often used in Z, like M1218 as an example.)

@@CSwizzleDizzle oh 100 percent man. They also didn't balance the SFX with the music very well, when it came to kikuchi's score.
Personally I like Yamamoto's more, since I grew up with it and it makes fights more epic, whereas kikuchi's does more justice to the build up. However, they rlly did an injustice to his music, by rushing it.

I grew up watching it on Toonami like a lot of us millennials, so I have nostalgia for Faulconer's score, but I've come to like Kikuchi's more overall. I love that you actually get silence; sounds of the wind, beams charging, there is literally not 1 second with Faulconer's score that it's quiet. I've come to appreciate Kikuchi's but wish they used more tracks from Dragon Ball which had some of my favorite songs by him.
They occasionally did, but mostly at the beginning of Z, and any times after that either the song was spliced and ended early (like when Gohan, Bulma and Trunks find Cell's egg, one of my favorite songs that they spliced to end early). The Red Ribbon Army "mystery" theme playing while Namek is about to blow up is sort of odd, I don't hate it, but I think silence would've been better most of the time that one played, and it only plays during that point where Namek is going to blow.
When No. 16 is being repaired you hear a song from Dragon Ball, it being the only time the song is played. That would've been better than the song you hear throughout Muscle Tower and such played on Namek. Overall, Kikuchi has the best score, but not utilizing more songs from Dragon Ball was a mistake by whoever was in charge of putting the music to the scenes. Either way, we still get all those awesome Future Trunks themes and the SSJ2 Gohan theme, arguably the greatest moment in anime.
FUNimation really screwed the pooch by adding some pointless Gohan thinking in his head and not keeping this theme just as it originally was. Various other countries used the Kikuchi score, so they got to experience that. Like I get it, the target age were kids, but what did FUNi think, we're stupid? We didn't need that inner dialogue in any way shape or form. Gohan snapping is all we needed to see. It's like they really had to explain to us why he was about to snap.

Kikuchi is more memorable, but my first full watch through of DBZ was Kai, with Yamamoto's score, so it's nostalgic for me. (I did later watch everything from DB-GT using the Dragon Boxes)
As much as it was plagiarism, Yamamoto's score for the Budokai games was so awesome. When the HD collection released, I was pretty disappointed, it didn't have the same vibe to it.

Kenji Yamamoto's music for DBZ Kai fits better because of the modern day. Despite of Yamamoto's troubles of music being similar or people call it plagiarizing. Yamamoto's music deserves a comeback as well as the music being reinstated.

Both Kikuchi and Yamamoto are timeless.
I remember hearing that Kikuchi had a limited number of band members, so he made up for that by being creative with instrumentation.
Its easier to identify Kikuchi's tracks as being distinctly DragonBall than it is for Yamamoto.

Kikuchi does a very good job to build suspense or put you in a position where the scene is tense

@@BlackPrince24 I completely agree, you have a very good musical ear.
I think that Yamamoto's score does a better job during the sad scenes. Like bardocks premonition & Goku sacrificing himself against Raditz. Due to the main chorus being string instruments.

      @jamsyt5731  6 дней назад

One thing I noticed is that kikuchi's score, is very quiet in a lot of the fighting scenes with loud ki blasts and punches.
I know they were in a hurry to replace Yamamoto's score, but could've done a better job with balancing it. Just seems like the SFX overpowers the music completely.

There are two versions. Yamamoto's is the original, kikuchi's is the replacement one. Kikuchi's was used from the android saga, but also replaced Yamamoto's throughout the whole series eventually. That's probably why you recognise the music as being from the android/cell saga.
