  • After 60 years the octopus appear to have made a bit of a comeback in the waters around Guernsey and because they super efficient at reproduction and hunting they are causing issues with some people livelihoods. Octopus are very intelligent and you can almost see in their eyes that they are analysing every moment when we get a little interaction with them. Very cool creatures but also very adaptable and breeds so quickly they appear to be plague like. Hope you enjoy these dives and please take time to give a thumbs up as RUclips tells me I need more of them 👍🏻😁👍🏻. stay safe

    Wow, JP those are some big scallops. We get some in this country that are almost like a tea saucer size and I love those because I’ll turn around and cop those into animal shapes because they’re big enough to make a necklace out of the big flat shell on it I can carve with my Dremel and my files. I made a beautiful eagle to put on my Native American regalia, and I love the adventure today there are quite a few octopus around lately. I noticed that smashes cooked a few.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

      Hi Grace, thats a really goof idea for the shells. we have a lady which paints on them which is quite nice. I watched Smash cook one and looked good. Stay safe 😁👍🏻❤️

    Enjoyable dive JP and plenty to see. Think i read that a flashing light or illumination in a crab pot will attract Scallops perhaps you can try it out to see if it works. Stay safe.

      Hi Rob, We had a bloke trying the lights in a pot in Guernsey a couple of years ago and dont think it worked very well and that's before he lost his crab pot to the tide. Lee thats dives with us on a Sunday found it and returned it. Thanks for watching 👍🏻😁👍🏻

      😂 until we realised they made shell gardens with their waste we struggled to find them but now they are in all sorts of locations. On the sand, in the wrecks on the reefs. 👍🏻😁👍🏻

    I think the only good thing about starfish are especially that big of a dry them out and put them on the shelf. Those are just monstrous and size.😯😯😯😯

      I have never been on the North west coast of Spain but would love to dive down that way. Your English is pretty good, probably better then mine and English is my first language 😂 plenty more videos to upload yet and as the summer approaches will be getting off to new location’s and to other Channel Islands too. Thanks for watching 👍🏻😁👍🏻

      Thanks Colin 👍🏻. I didn’t do the Christmas Day dive as my kids are still young and I want to stay at home with them. I think there others bailed as the weather wasn’t too nice either 👍🏻😁👍🏻

    Thankyou JP, another great instalment. I was wondering if once you have dived an area for scallops, do you leave that area for a certain amount of time before scalloping there again? 👌👍

    • @scubadive
      @scubadive  6 дней назад +1

      Hi John. We like to flit all over the place and try diffrent spots. It will get to a stage where we leave the area then other divers will then dive in that same location. Resting areas is a very good practice but is rarely done in Guernsey from what I can see as no one knows where everyone else is diving. What will happen with us is the weather becomes fine and we go off diving shipwrecks which will give a good break for the numbers to come back up.👍🏻😁👍🏻.

    I heard that there was a rise of octopus and it was wiping out the shellfish, affecting fishermen. Is that true where you’re from?

    • @scubadive
      @scubadive  10 дней назад +1

      They are being a pain as they are so intelligent and getting the pots and getting caught red handed. 😂 they were first seen SW coast of Guernsey in 2018 and have increased in numbers. The last 12 months have been bad for the fisherman. They probably came up from the bay of Biscay with the sea temps being more mild and warmer for longer. Other factors may be the reduced number of larger pray such as Congers, bull Huss etc. it’s all a guess as I don’t think anyone really knows fully. It’s the same as most things in nature, it just happens. 👍🏻😁👍🏻

    Hi JP, what's that word you keep using for that seabed material, it's like merle, mirl or something. Can't work it out what you're saying in order to google it etc.

    You can say that again JP the price of everything has gone way up eggs are getting to be expensive here in this country all because of the bird flu thank God my girls are healthy but almost 5 dollars a dozen for Eggs. I don’t know what they are over there But yeah, it’s expensive.

    • @scubadive
      @scubadive  10 дней назад

      Hi Grace, our eggs are quite expensive too and they have blamed the war in the ukraine and the fact the bird food is grown there so it expensive to feed them.
