I'd love to see a Pool Heater Cheat Sheet, outlining pool size, target temperature, heater size (BTU), and then fields like "time to reach target temp." & "cost (SSS) to reach target temp." between electric heat pump and gas heaters. It could include a pre-requisites section indicating costs related to installing gas supply or electric lines (new heat pumps need 240V, 50A).
I have a cheat sheet but don’t know how to get it to you
"only run the gas heater when you want to swim" I have found this to be inefficient unless the dormant time is more than a week. My heater consumes much more propane doing an all-day burn to go from 72-82 than it does just running an hour or so every morning to maintain 80 and then an extra hour or so on the day we want it warmer for whatever reason.
Perhaps above-ground pools might burn less on the one single burn, but my 50,000gal in-ground prefers steady temperature.
I have an indoor pool which I only turn up the heater on the weekends when I swim. It's 20 degrees outside but my pool room is 90 degrees. Having a gas heater is awsome.

We are lucky to have relatively inexpensive electricity.
We have used an electric heater for 30 years. It does take a while to heat up in the Spring.
Our pool is in the sun from 10 am to 7 during the summer.
We also use a solar cover.
We live 20 miles south of the Canadian border and have a shorter season then most, but we swim incomfort !

I have my in ground pool for twenty years. I am on my third propane gas heater. Had two Haywood’s .they broke a lot. Every year I had a serviceman at the house. Water pressure switches , heat exchanger leaks it was a nightmare. I purchased a Ray pack in 21 it didn’t even last a month and the heat exchanger was leaking. They warranted it and fixed it. That was in august. They gave it back to me repaired and it lasted all of 22 without breaking . Here it is Oct of 23 and I have had a repair man here three times this summer. Total garbage. Stay away . Thousands spent and always broken .
Is a gas heater capable of keeping a pleasant temperature even through the winter during very cold days? We can hit single digits and even subzero temperatures around where I live.
Can we covert a broken gas heater into something solar for heating?
Assume i have a pool with 100,000 liters capacity . And temperature reach below 5 c in winter. How much time will a gass heater take to warm up. According to this video. It will take a 100 hrs😱 to reach 37c 🤔
So how does the heat pump/heater comparison work when you have a spa? Do heat pumps take a long time to heat up spas? What about in the colder temperatures? If you have a spa, is a heat pump not going to heat up the spa either?
In my 6 years of pool work having been to well over 1000 pools/spas for three different companies combined, I have never seen a heat pump on a spa. As far as your questions go I can't answer them because of that. Get a gas heater.
Just purchased a home where the previous owner added chlorine tablets right into the skimmer and now there is a ton of copper in the water from the heater. Basically, how screwed am I?
We got one and I regret it a little. Pool installer never mentioned the limitations on gas lines. Had to get larger gas meter installed, permits, inspections, plumbers, red tape. Almost $6k after all said and done. And if the utility company has to dig up your yard to install larger supply lines, watch out! $$$

Oh no I just got a gas heater installed with my plumber running a new gas line. How did you know that that your meter wasn’t big enough? I hope what he installed works for us. We haven’t tested it yet. (We plan to soon) We have a 250,000 BTU Hayward heater and a 16,400 gallon in ground pool. I would appreciate any help you can offer us Matthew.
@@tracy3066 The only way you would know is to go out there, fire the heater and see how long it runs. If it fires then shuts off within a few seconds, try it again. Typical sign of gas related problems BUT also, If it keeps happening there could be other issues with the heater itself but for you to 100% know it's gas related, you need to have somebody test the gas line at the heater with a manometer and see if the pressure drops down way below specification.
@@xLPDz Thanks for your help!Ok he did fire up the heater once it was hooked up and he said I was good to go. However at that time we didn't need to heat the pool so I shut off the heater. It was running fine for the 10 minutes and raised the temp up 2 degrees. So it should be ok? Or I was thinking I should test it tomorrow morning. Just turn it on and heat the pool and then use the pool. That way I will know all is good for our pool party next Friday. So as long as I turn it on tomorrow and it runs and heats up the pool without shutting down I should be good to go?
@@tracy3066 Yes, go out there tomorrow and set it at whatever desired temperature, if it stays on until it's reached whatever you have it set for there is no issue. Like I had said, if there was a gas problem it wouldn't even run 10 minutes, or 30 seconds for that matter.
Can you convert a gas heat to propane?
I bet a tankless water heater would work well too. They can even be mounted outside. Just need to get a pump to move the water.

I don’t understand what you’re saying about not running the heater all the time and only when you want to use it doesn’t that defeat the purpose don’t you want the water warm before you get in it? So if you only swim on the weekends you might want to run that thing a couple days before the weekend maybe Thursday Friday so by Saturday it’s in the mid 80s where you want it.
That's what we meant. Sorry if that was unclear. But just no need to run it 24/7 like a heat pump.
Prepare to spend a ton of money. They break often and repairs are expensive.
Cheaper than electric by a lot - to operate.
Not electric heat pump. Also electric can be tied to home solar.
It depends on where you live.
I line dry my clothes during spring and summer so don't notice any increase in my electric bill using my electric pool heater

My Raypak died in under a year. They are junk!
