- Amtrak has always been known as a passenger railroad, but did you know there was a time when they hauled mail and freight? Back in the 1980s, the age of the Railway Post Office had all but passed, leaving trucks and planes as the primary carrier of mail. Trains still carried lower priority mail on passenger and freight trains, but it was a far cry from the golden age. However, the 1980s were putting a strain on the US Postal Service as highway and air congestion created delays. The only other option was the railroad, and Amtrak was contracted for the job. They’d place a new focus on mail and express freight in the 1990s, and their trains could have over 20 freight cars of high priority goods in tow. So where did Amtrak's "freight trains" go, and how did the freight railroads react to this new competition?
