It's an old fashioned Hollywood production told in a classical way. It's one of those movies that might not be masterful in one thing but it does a lot of things very very very well

This is well said. It sort of puts the Best Picture win in perspective too.

Movies I Love (and so can you) I think the screenplay IS the weakest aspect but I still thought that was at least solid. The other elements really elevated the material

But the music, acting, art director are masterful.

It may have been done before, but it’s done so brilliantly here I can look past that. I love this movie so much, I hope it wins good at the Oscars tonight.

Really good review. I had a problem being invested in the central romance as well BUT loved all things surrounding it. A few disturbing tonal shifts here and there but other than that, agree with everything you say here

Agree that the relationship was going deep too fast. Kinda put me off because if you dont sell this part some later scenes dont feel right.
That said i enjoyed it. Love Michael Shannon, hes so good. And del torros attention to visual Detail is always a pleasure to watch

I thought it was first and foremost a beautiful movie. I loved the color palette and I thought the creature was masterfully created (if anybody knows what techniques they used, let me know, I'd be interested). The acting was also great from the whole cast. The main plot weakness to me was not the love between the creature and Eliza, but rather the healing powers the creature possessed. The fact that it can heal it's own wounds makes the whole rescue effort quite futile. Thoughts?

The outcast group vs the core group thing here feels like sour grapes on GDT's part.

I hate this movie. I liked but after the overhype and the statement that is wade better than any other this year, is crazy. Ill be mad if the choose this over 3 billboards.

So sad it won, I thought overall it was an incredibly average movie with some very weird plot choices and decisions. The movie lacked in any consistency, with brutal gory scenes to romantic/sex scenes. I'm still trying to figure out who the movie is trying to target. Also, so many parts of this movie were just cliched, as if taken from every other Beauty/beast tale. Really disappointed it won, but who cares Oscars don't matter, because the best movie (Blade Runner 2049) wasn't even nominated.

I dunno. I unfortunately inhabit multiple minority labels, existing very firmly in the "other" catagory, and this movie came across like a person with absolutely no labels or experience as an "other" telling me what my and others' like me experiences are. The result of which being a shallow cartoon fairy tale. I didn't care for it.

    Spoiler warning!
I am kinda disturbed by that movie. I watched and read a lot about it after watching, but I just cannot see the masterpiece everybody else sees in it. The most interesting thing is maybe the background of Eliza. Was she really just a mute human being, or is there more? Could she really control the rain drops on the bus window? Is she also a monster? We will never know.
    Nevertheless, great review!

Enjoyed it, but because it had to be so formulaic in the rest of it, it felt a bit bored throughout. It was like watching a familiar trope that had been modernized with some finger banging and casual bestiality. A solid movie just not something I'm likely to remember down the line.
