    Kodak Ektar H35 vs Olympus Pen-F
    In this head to head battle, I put the new Kodak Ektar H35 up against the Olympus Pen-F for a half frame show down. I wanted to know if the Kodak H35 could hang with the famous Pen-F, so I went out with my friend Scott and made photos using both film cameras.
    All images have been post processed the same, and each photographer took roughly 36 photos with each camera.

    I got the Ektar H35 back in November (so it's been half a year of using it!) and I still love it! I agree it's super cheap build and plasticky, but somehow that encourages you to have fun with it because it doesn't feel too serious. It thrives in daylight (when using 200 or lower film) but useless after sundown unless you use the flash; even then with flash, it's not that great. Because of its limited settings it's super prone to blur, too. I traveled Japan with quite a few cameras and for some reason kept forgetting to hold my breath and be EXTRA still when shooting w it! Still got some fun shots!
    Alas, it's 6 months later and I caved in and purchased the Pen FT!!!!!! Still love the half-frame function but love that the Pen FT allows me to shoot more versatile scenes rather than just be stuck with outdoor/sun for the Ektar H35. It is a GORGEOUS camera. But I love both and will keep both for their own unique functions; H35 when I need something pocketable, casual, and not afraid of it being stolen or broken or something lol, and Pen FT when I know I want better quality images, more control, need versatility, when I'm in more of an artistic mood
    Love your videos!!

    Talya, glad to see you both having a fun and productive day. The Kodak is basically a reworked "single use" camera, in a shell whose design is based on the European market Instamatic cameras, designed by Kenneth Grange.

    Great video! I have both these cameras as well and love both of them for different reasons. The Pen F is a real marvel of design (considering how compact it is) and as it's one of the only half frame cameras with interchangeable lenses the kind of stories it can tell using the popular diptych style dual photo trend is remarkable. Even as just a half frame camera the total manual control and choice optics can really elevate things (one con I'll mention is they do have a common issue where the spring to activate the lens' auto aperture lever can get tired and the camera will "stick" with the mirror up. It can be fixed but it's not for the faint of heart). The Ektar H35, meanwhile is very unique in its class. There's lots of "reloadable disposables" but RETO (who actually made the H35) really knocked it out by making a plastic fantastic that has really unique character that separates it from the field. They did this before with the phenomenal Ultrawide & Slim (a love letter to the cult favorite Vivtar Ultrawide & Slim) and both these cameras are not only the best reloadables on the market but also cameras I recommend to those just looking to try out analog film with not much investment. They're not the most amazing quality but the H35's endurance and the Ultrawide & Slim's unique focal length really make for some dramatic shots.
    Also I agree with comments below that 100-200 ISO film is the sweet spot for the H35 on sunny outdoor shots. 400 is salvageable since film does well with overexposure but really it works best a stop or two lower and you can really only do that with your film choice in this camera

    for a third of the price that little Kodak held up quite nice going against an interchangable lens. Use the Kodak with it's fun intentions in mind and this is great cheap pick up for a half frame. Can't wait to get one. and oh yeah I Want This Camera :)

      Sorry, you're late to the party. I've already given this camera away. And I had a lot of fun shooting this day with Scott. I think the video more than reflects that. Even though the Kodak is NOT a good pickup for $50. Put that money elsewhere, and have an outing with a better shooting experience. ✌️

    I bought the H35. First roll was B&W 400 ISO, most were overexposed quite a bit. Shot with 200 ISO and realty liked the results. I also like the old-school flash look in photos when turning on the flash. My crappiest camera, but I always seem to take it with me because of the weight.

    • @Seele2015au
      @Seele2015au Год назад +1

      Ed Mann I wonder if the first roll was Ilford XP2 Super, because this camera is basically a box camera in the traditional sense, offering one EV only, then rely on the latitude of the film to produce a printable negative, no matter how thick or thin it is. XP2 Special, along with colour negative films, are chromogenic films where the images are formed by dye "clouds" in the negative, so they can deal with tremendous exposure variance while coming up with printable negatives.

      @@Seele2015au No. it was HP5+, and I figured there would be issues. I tried to shoot in overcast situations. I was able to adjust the levels after scanning to get some good photos though. I shot Arista 200 and was much more happy with the result, especially the flash photos which really looked old school. It is basically a toy camera.

    • @Seele2015au
      @Seele2015au Год назад

      @@edmann2843 Glad to know you have got results. Arista EDU Ultra has more latitude and can take more abuse, so it might be a good choice. That said, with a 1/100s shutter speed and f/9.5 aperture, in the sun at EI 400, the camera would over-expose by around 3 1/2 stops, but it's sensible for Kodak to specify that for the camera as it's likely that it would be used in more casual and dimmer situations.

    The pictures of the H35 seem to be perfectly exposed. What film ( ISO ? ) did you use ? Most people use 400, but it’s pretty overexposed in strong sunlight then. So, you used an ISO 100 film, I guess ? Or maybe 200 ?

    In my Ektar H35 400 iso is pretty overexposed in sunny conditions and underexposed when used indoor with a flash. I would recommend 160 of 200 speed outdoor and 800 speed indoors if you plan to use it in low light with a flash. The camera is cheap enough but two of them and load one for indoor and one for sunny days
