@@elliottlarson2221 The Danners are "OK" if you work at a desk, I find they are comfy for about 6 months but the leather and nylon/canvas (if that's what it even is) can't hold up if you're in the field, dessert and forget about the of Afghanistan, that place will shred most any sole of a boot in less than six months if you're actively out patroling. But you don't need to be Infantry to have the cemented soles fail on those boots, even those that actively work in a motorpool or warehouse (SSA) or put 5-6 miles (or more) on a day around a base will have those boots failing within a year. Sadly, the old black leather boots from almost 20 years ago (I'm thinking Cohcoran "jump boot" variant (basically a cap toe) were ok in the sense that they had traction (Vibram soles), were comfortable after break-in, stitching wouldn't fall apart and could be re-soled! But they were too hot in the dessert and weren't warm enough in Europe during the winters. If they weren't warm enough in Europe I'm sure they weren't warm enough in Korea although the Bellville's Gortex "Mattahorn" was good but heavy.

A year late, but I’ll put in my 2 cents. I’ve worked in a shopping/receiving environment for years. If there’s one thing that will destroy leather boots, it’s working around pallets.
For those that aren’t in the know, it’s the dropping of pallets and squeezing the boots in between pallets that does the trick, along with box cutters that slip at the right angle.
I’ve gone through half a dozen work boots, even ones with polyurethane on the outer toe for protection, and pallets just eat through then. Scraping, cutting, and tearing through leather like nothing.
There is one exception: Roughout leather boots. They can handle all the abuse without any kind of visible damage. Only problem is they discolor and darken to an embarrassingly degree if tanned on the lighter side.
But work boots aren’t there to look pretty. Hope this helps.

You can get a boot like that from White's for around $700. I have a pair from White's with double midsoles and leather half slip. I am not a firefighter but I like the style of White's boots so I opted for dress leather but I could have ordered their work leather for no extra charge.

Spokane has 2 boot makers.....Nicks and another company called Whites boots. Back in the 80's I tried to get Nicks to build me a pair of boots for my work on the Railroad. I walked in ballast all day and got tired of feeling every rock. I asked nicks to build a boot with double the leather in the sole, double stich, and double screw the Vibram sole onto the boot. The counter guy said I was crazy and a boot built that was would be to stiff and unwearable. So I went to Whites boots where they traced my foot and then built it to my specifications .....almost. 6 weeks after I ordered my custom boots I went to try them on. The guy pulled them from the back and sat down at my feet and slipped them on. I looked down and said boy the Steel Toe sure does not show. I bent over and pushed my finger into my toe. The guy gets a funny look and said "you did not order steel toe boots did you?" He went and looked at the order and low and behold they were to be steel toe boots. He comes back and said he was sorry and he would expedite a new pair and did I want a pair of custom made boots at half price? I told him no as I had to have steel toes for work. (I wish I had bought them for hunting) and in 2 weeks they had my correctly made to order boots ready. My experience is that with Whites is that once broke in they feel like slippers and that makes it worth the price. Just for reference a pair of Whites hi top with steel toe (Smokejumper)was $200 my special order boots were $325. Nicks and Whites are well build and most important Rebuildable!

Cool vid. A little late to suggest but if you do another fire test maybe get a block of silicone. Put a meat probe in it and try and register internal temp changes while burning the boot.

  • @MADTUBE-58

From a construction workers perspective: when it comes to buying steel toed boots they’re they suck unless you put tough toe on them because once something does fall onto them yea your feet are protected but now your brand new waterproof 300 dollar boots aren’t waterproof anymore because the steel toe and falling object make a hole in the leather. These boots however are so over built on the cap that you may not even need tough toe that’s value. If you spend your money on work boots you want them to at least outlast the sole they come with. If nicks makes a 9” boot to those specs I’ll buy them.

They are custom fit to your feet and fit like a glove. They take about 40-60 hours to break in. After the break in period you will not want to wear any other boots in the woods because nothing will wear as well as custom made boots.

This video is very interesting to me because, (without knowing about this video), I called Nick's a few months ago asking about an over the calf, leather, lace-up boot. They wouldn't make it for me. SO, I hope you are successful in convincing them to make a line of these boots!! I want an over the calf, leather, lace-up, work boot that I can tuck my pant legs into for working on the ranch. A boot like I just described was being made in the 1800's and early 1900's, but not any longer......

I personally have gone through 2 Redwings ($375 per pair) 4 Danners ($250 per pair) 2 Georgia's ($200 per pair) and a few Justin's ($150+ per pair) while welding and none of them have held up for more than 18months all from leather failure. Not the sole getting worn down.. either the stitches blowout and the leather can't be saved or the insole rips or I even have a pair where on my heel the leather got a small cut and just ripped horizontally. I'm very hard on boots. Not sure if Whites are the way to go but these look like legit contenders for toughest boots. I would pay $1,000 once if these lasted 5+ years.
