7:55 - The live action Mulan has definitely failed. It cost $200m to make, made around $60-70m, flopped in North America, flopped in Europe, and flopped in China - the market it was specifically made to appeal to. It was criticised for fucking around with the original story and characters and giving the main character magical superpowers for some reason, kinda crushing the point of the story and leading me to believe that they've forgotten that Mulan was based on an actual historical person. On top of all that, it's landed Disney in controvery for buddying up with an organisation that runs concentration camps.
Mulan was actual fictional folk hero and in the beginning of the movie they already ruined part of the original ballad she was from. Where she sees two rabbits running side by side and then tells her family they were probably male and female. Even though in the ballad she could only tell by seeing their facial features and could not tell the difference when they were running.
It’s not just Robin Williams at the apex of his career, it’s Robin Williams at the apex of his career playing a role that was literally written just for him
As for live-action Disney remakes that are good... I've only seen one because it's the only one I was interested in seeing because they did at least something original with the concept instead of a "same story but with some differences" and that was Christopher Robin. And I really enjoyed it. It had a lot of the classic Pooh-humour, was a bit melancholic but in the end sweet as hunny.
I think "the Jungle Book" is actually better than the original as well. the original was fairly nonsensical and aside from a few songs and moments, it was pretty bland. the remake was genuinely enjoyable for me.
Yes, the Christopher Robin film is a rare exception to the remake/sequel curse. Kids and their parents can watch it together, and it goes for your feelings so well.
Cinderella did not change anything and to be honest that was the problem. The exact opposite problem of Mulan which changed everything. The only recent remakes that were a legitimately good experience was Jungle book, Lady and the Tramp, and Chrostopher Robin. I am honestly so thankful they did not ruin Lady and the Tramp
Anjelica Huston was definitely at her most gorgeous in the Addams Family films. The cast were all fantastic too, much like with other great films, there's still things I pick up that I never noticed.
Fun fact that I learned about those live action Disney movies : Not great as movies, but great way to renew the copyrights on franchises that are about to expire and fall in the public domain.
Didn't many of those films still have plenty of time left on their copyright anyway? If that's the case, then these live-action remakes were completely unnecessary. If it's a creative way of renewing trademark, then that's another matter, since people could be getting sick of yet another DVD or Blu-Ray release of the film.
Pretty sure the whole point of the live action films is to extend the copyright, they used to do the same thing when they had the movies "coming out of the vault" and being re-released with like an additional six seconds of film. It's always when something is about to slip into the public domain where it belongs.
Nah, that's not it. The copyright laws are 70 years after the death of the creator for any works made after 1978. Before that it lasted 95 years between 1923 and 1978 (basically anything written or made before 1925 is public domain) So if that were the case they would have to remake the oldest cartoons first like Snow White, Fox and the Hound, Bambi etc instead of Beauty and the Beat and Lion King which was originally released in 90's and still has a minimum of 40 years left on the copyright.
All of their works are from public domain anyways, every single one of their classics is based on a much older story. So it wouldn't matter that they're remaking beauty and the beast, the original French is still free for grabs
@@krampusklaws2238 I imagine that it's probably that "Beauty and the Beast," "Cinderella," and "Maleficent" were made to extend the *popular* series' copyrights, just like how they're working on a live-action "Little Mermaid." Not a lot of Disney fans care about "Snow White," or "The Fox and the Hound," and I think Bambi was actually not Disney's property in the first place (based on a book that at the time was not public domain, I believe), so I imagine they can't actually extend that copyright. Particularly, I imagine that they specifically made "Maleficent" instead of "Sleeping Beauty" so that they won't have to worry about the character for a long while, as Maleficent's clearly more popular than the titular heroine ever was. The "Lion King" live-action...I can only assume it's some weirdness to do with the whole "we actually stole the plot of a Kimba the White Lion movie, so we have to keep this up so that the whole thing stays ours/we can't be fought on this" line of thought.
@@whitemoonwolf13 I agree. This is why things like "Snow White and the Huntsman" can still get made, even with Disney having their version of Snow White out there. However, it's likely that these remakes are more so that Disney has a leg to stand on in order to try to sue folks for anything that even remotely gets close to their product. I've heard rumors they've already started trying to go after people in regard to Star Wars fandom (mostly, that they've been starting to go after fanfic/fan-film creators), so I wouldn't be shocked to see them try to target anyone who even remotely makes a version of these faerie-tales they think gets too close to the look or way they told their story. Disney has been known for being *incredibly* litigious about "their" property.
@@Mokiefraggle they're remaking their classics as easy money. the star wars is different, that IP is still covered under copyright for AT LEAST another 20 years so yeah, they are within their legal right to pursue their copyright claims against ppl who use their IP.
They absolutely could have made an over the top poofy princess dress for Beauty and the Beast (you know like every single background character had on) it would have been more historically accurate as well as more accurate to the original movie but they chose to make an early 2000s prom dress instead because... feminism? or something... I mean they based the design for the original dress on actual historic dresses that people actually wore, plus the live action Cinderella had a giant poofy princess dress with about half the budget, so they really have no excuse. Tl/dr: I'm a historic costuming nerd who is super salty about that uninspiring limp early 2000s prom dress they stuck Emma Watson in. Edit: And by feminism I mean Disney pandering to what they think feminists want and failing horribly, just look at the live action Mulan.
Poor Anjelica 😂 between this and having to endure 6 hours (I believe?) every day to get into her witch prosthetics for “The Witches” every day... that’s dedication!
For sure. That is one reason why I will always appreciate and prefer practical effects over CGI. Not to say that CGI is lazy, as those animators put in a lot of time and effort, but it inevitably becomes dated. Practical effects and makeup, when done well enough, never lose their charm and will stand the test of time.

See, most artists wouldn't be at all interested in remaking a movie, as they'd want to create something original. Thing is, the artists rarely get to make those decisions, and the people who do, only care about making money. They don't care how good the movie is, if it makes them money. @@Rocket1377 At the very least the prequels aren't overt remakes of the of the original trilogy. I once described the Force Awakens to a friend only by using key words and not being very specific in certain parts. For example: The masked Sith is looking for very important information that was entrusted into an astromech that flees across a desert planet before finding our plucky young hero about to embark a journey, finds a wise old mentor from the previous war, etc. History repeating itself in ways in the prequels isn't exactly directly ripping off like The Force Awakens. If you happen to be a fan of TFA, that's cool. I just don't like the sequels.

Also a black gown that was supposed to have been worn in both movies along with Gomez's pinstripe suit was sold at auction in 2018 for over $14,000

Fun Fact: the guy who played Pugsly Adams is known for another piece of clothing these days: he's the hat tip fedora neckbeard from the meme. Jerry Messing
I'm pretty sure you already knew this, but the underlying motivation for the remakes (aside from money), is to renew their copywriters on the IP's because they're required to create new material with the IP in order to retain the rights
Did they not already make a re-imagining of the first Star Wars movie? I mean, that's not what the Force Awakens is, I don't know what else to call it.
Why did the dress look terrible in the live action Beautty and the Beast? Because Emma Watson insisted that the original dress design be changed to her own without a corset for "feminist" reasons, even though the original.dress design was period accurate and significantly better design. So basically because Emma Watson wanted to waste a ridiculous amount of time and effort put in by the designer because she had a big ego.
Land Before Time ruined all sequels/remakes for me when I was young. To this day I automatically despise when they try to milk more money out of a divine bovine of a movie.
The BEST moment in the Addams Family movies is in Values when they’re confronting Debbie and Morticia steps into the eye lighting and for like a brief second you can see her trying to find her mark and regretting taking the role. Iconic

I was just listening to your spiel about all of her make up and corsetry and thought....Drag queens go through just as much as Angelica did every night to perform for dollar bills, and they do it for years if not decades without burning anything.... but the stage. She is an actress who accepted millions of dollars for a role. Do these people not know what they are getting into. Some people complain about the most bizarre things.
Hearing about how Angelica Houston had to wear a tight corset, tight outfit, hours of makeup etc Me, a drag queen; sounds like a standard day of work post lockdown 😂
She didn’t burn all of them! Anjelica wore multiple dresses for role. They probably let her burn one of the more simpler dresses, since some of them have really intricate beadwork. Plus I saw one on auction a few years back.
Re: the Disney remakes - especially the Lion King! All of the ability of the animal characters to properly emote was lost because they insisted on a photorealistic depiction, and then they cut out songs!
A note about the Disney live remakes like Aladdin, the problem with that one wasn't that they chose someone who wasn't as good as Robin Williams. The problem is they tried to make him relive Robin Williams' performance instead of playing to Will Smith's strengths.
The only part of the movie I liked in the remake was Will. The acting for everyone else felt forced and was fast-paced and they didn't even show them meeting properly.
the main reason the dress looked like crap on Emma Watson is she refused to wear a Corset that was designed to go with the outfit. therefor making the dress look dumpy.
The costume designer was given an absurdly short amount of time to design the dress. It really wasn’t all Emma Watsons fault. Most of it comes from the director disrespecting the material he was working with, and rushed the most important garment in the movie. I feel so sorry for the costume designer.
Disney only remade the classic films to extend/strengthen their claim to ownership over the IP: sleeping beauty and Cinderella were only remade after Snow White and The Huntsman came out.

She's the only perfect Morticia.
HANDS DOWN the best Gomez moment is in the Addams Cemetery where Morticia reminisces abt how she met Gomez at his Cousins funeral in which HE was the primary suspect in said cousins MURDER and how he couldn't stop laughing during the entire eulogy!! XD XD XD XD And there he sits next to her, laughing yet again!!
Leave Treasure Planet alone dude, how the hell would that be better in live action
I think it could be decent if they had the right casting and the budget it needed, but knowing disney it would probably turn into another Artemis Fowl quality movie.
Yeah, concur, with the right casting (and director) Treasure Planet could make for a great live action movie. Although if they do make a good Treasure Planet remake, I bet a lot of folks are gonna go with the "Pirates of the Caribbean but in space" rage route

@@meegingernoodles91 Yup, the age ghetto screwed us all.
I loved Treasure planet and Atlantis, unfortunately no one at the time wonted to watch anything different from standard Disney musicals.
The passion between Gomez and Morticia makes every other aspect of the film secondary.
It’s not just Robin Williams at the apex of his career, it’s Robin Williams at the apex of his career playing a role that was literally written just for him
Honestly, most people couldn't hope to out perform Robin Williams at his worst.
101 Dalmatians was good
Cinderella did not change anything and to be honest that was the problem. The exact opposite problem of Mulan which changed everything. The only recent remakes that were a legitimately good experience was Jungle book, Lady and the Tramp, and Chrostopher Robin. I am honestly so thankful they did not ruin Lady and the Tramp
Christopher Robin was wonderful. The only other live action adaptation I enjoyed was Cinderella.
The only Disney remake I like is "The Jungle Book," and I will freely admit that the main reason is that Christopher Walken plays King Louis.
Fair enough. That's the only reason to like that remake.
He was the only good thing about the movie
Anjelica Huston was definitely at her most gorgeous in the Addams Family films.
The cast were all fantastic too, much like with other great films, there's still things I pick up that I never noticed.
Witches
Fun fact that I learned about those live action Disney movies : Not great as movies, but great way to renew the copyrights on franchises that are about to expire and fall in the public domain.
EXACTLY! its all about copyrights which Disney has had a sleeper hold on for YEARS. the live action remakes are a tactic to hold on to those rights.

Oh god Mulan....they did both my girls dirty in those movies....
I love the original two Addams family movies,so many modern remakes are soulless. Gomez going off on one about Debbie the seductress of Waikiki is hilarious! Also yeah, the undercurrent of sensuality that Gomez and Morticia have between them is impressive

See, most artists wouldn't be at all interested in remaking a movie, as they'd want to create something original. Thing is, the artists rarely get to make those decisions, and the people who do, only care about making money. They don't care how good the movie is, if it makes them money. A passable remake, if it makes them millions of dollars, is perfectly acceptable. Heck, a dogshit movie that makes them millions of dollars is perfectly acceptable, lol

I'll stick with Muppet Treasure Island and call it a day.
when i was in college, I suggested to a psych teacher that that would be a great essay topic: Were the Addams' a functional or dysfunctional family? Discuss
Treasure Planet was pretty good. Disney just screwed the animators with a virtually non-existent ad campaign is all. from what I understand, It was the passion project of two of their top animators, and Disney didn't want them to succeed and possibly branch away.
Treasure planet is one of those hidden gems, and also i just saw they are remaking lion king 2.....
You know. At this point I just.... don’t really care.
Pretty sure they didn’t give Ms. Anjelica Huston the character’s costume. That makes it likely stuck in some studio archive room.
I actually googled this fun fact to try and see if I could find an article where she says this or some proof and the only source I'm finding is this video, their website and the subreddit for this channel so I agree I think they're full of it.
I doubt there was just the one copy of the Morricia dress, so she could easily have burned one--the one she'd worn most--and still had another for the studio to store away.
She could of stolen the costume, like Ryan Reynolds did with the deadpool suit.
They did a live action 101 dalmations way back in like 1999. I found that on disney+ and watched it back to back with the animated one. That was a trip
Angelica Houston's father John was a legendary film director and actor...in fact he was the voice of Gandalf in the 77 animated version of The Hobbit. Her brother Danny is also an actor who has been in numerous films: 30 Days of Night, Robin Hood (the Russell Crowe version), Wolverine Origins....just to name a few.

I was so sad when I found out that Treasure Planet didn't do well. It was one of my favourites and it still is.
An interesting video would be time movie studios wanted movies to die. The reason being is that you mentioned treasure planet which was well received by critics but it was pushed to the release weekend that Harry Potter came out for no apparent reason
I don't think this story is true because several of her gowns from the movies were on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2012. The pictures I've seen of the gowns on display was a red and black brocade with black lace sleeves, another was black with a dark red dragon like motif, and a third was black with black beading on the sleeves, hips, and train.
Also a black gown that was supposed to have been worn in both movies along with Gomez's pinstripe suit was sold at auction in 2018 for over $14,000
"Morticia very iconic and still. She’s not fractious at all. She’s very settled in her body language. I had a bonfire of the vanities at the end of the movie where I took all the fake stuff, made a pile and set it on fire."
I found this online. She might have burnt the last dress she wore, which isn't to say there aren't multiples of one dress as well for back up.

Oh really! Thats hilarious
I own Treasure Planet and when he brought it up I had PTSD flashbacks
Treasure Planet is my favorite Disney move it would make an amazing live action remake. Same with Atlantis
In the remake of star wars, instead of Luke kissing his sister, princess Leia gets stuck in a washing machine.

Fun little bit of info: I had a teacher in high-school who portrayed Cousin It in those 90s movies. He said he almost had a heat stroke in those fur suits
They did remake Star Wars IV: A New Hope.
They called it Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.
I seem to recall that Ms. Huston burned every "witchy" costume she ever wore. It may date back to school productions of "The Scottish Play" by Shakespeare and the related superstitions.
The dress in the live action Cinderella was kinda good.
That would be a great idea to remake all the “flops” of Disney past, but probably best to leave the live action to dust.
Treasure planet was one of the first movies I saw in theaters. Then bought the DVD and watched it several more times.
I'm going to cringe the day I see them remake aristocrats live
I've never understood the hate for Treasure Planet, my whole family loved the movie.
I never saw much if any hate for it. Just a vast majority of people that didn't even know it existed.
Hearing about how Angelica Houston had to wear a tight corset, tight outfit, hours of makeup etc
Me, a drag queen; sounds like a standard day of work post lockdown 😂
She didn’t burn all of them! Anjelica wore multiple dresses for role. They probably let her burn one of the more simpler dresses, since some of them have really intricate beadwork. Plus I saw one on auction a few years back.
That’s exactly my mentality. Don’t even try to do a remake unless you can do it better. Start with a crappy movie, you can only go up from there.
Re: the Disney remakes - especially the Lion King! All of the ability of the animal characters to properly emote was lost because they insisted on a photorealistic depiction, and then they cut out songs!
3:50 Imagine Morticia in Heelies!
Zoooom
A note about the Disney live remakes like Aladdin, the problem with that one wasn't that they chose someone who wasn't as good as Robin Williams. The problem is they tried to make him relive Robin Williams' performance instead of playing to Will Smith's strengths.
The only part of the movie I liked in the remake was Will. The acting for everyone else felt forced and was fast-paced and they didn't even show them meeting properly.
the main reason the dress looked like crap on Emma Watson is she refused to wear a Corset that was designed to go with the outfit. therefor making the dress look dumpy.
Plus it literally looks like a prom dress, the cut isn't even the same as the original
The costume designer was given an absurdly short amount of time to design the dress. It really wasn’t all Emma Watsons fault. Most of it comes from the director disrespecting the material he was working with, and rushed the most important garment in the movie. I feel so sorry for the costume designer.
It doesn’t look anything special
At least when she had to say her lines as Morticia being "miserable" or "in absolute agony" it was the truth lmao

Disney only remade the classic films to extend/strengthen their claim to ownership over the IP: sleeping beauty and Cinderella were only remade after Snow White and The Huntsman came out.
Then why remake Beauty and the Beast (91), Aladdin(92), The Lion King (94), Mulan (98) when those movies still have well over 40 years before their copyright is close to being up? why not do the older stuff first?
