See I always took it to be that Mari was his biggest supporter of his dreams to be a cook and she gave him the courage to do so. Whereas after her death he gave in to his parents expectations of him to become a doctor and without Mari he didn’t have enough fight in him to go against them. I imagine he also lost some off his passion during the grieving process.
