I read once someone asked Paul McCartney what it was like play with the worlds greatest rock & roll band, he replied I don’t recall ever playing with ZZ Top.
A little too much John Lee Hooker for at least one person. The publisher and copyright holder of the John Lee Hooker song "Boogie Chillen'" sued but lost. This case led to some changes in American copyright law, and ZZ Top settled out of court. The details are on the Wikipedia page for "Boogie Chillen'."
I have been fortunate to have seen “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” Live 4 times. I recorded the last show (Full HD) before Dusty passed away. Always an awesome show. You must see many other tunes from them including “Rough Boy” (official video)…. “Same three guys, same three cords, for five decades” - Billy Gibbons at last show.
Me too. I remember seeing them on stage singing while spinning their guitars in synch and then a big puff of smoke and they disappeared from stage in the middle of the song. About 10 seconds later the auditorium doors 50 yards from the stage behind us swung open and they walked through the doors playing their guitars walking down the isle back toward the stage. It was frickin amazing. Never forgot that epic mind trick and I attended that concert many years ago during the 80’s in Hollywood, Florida. ✌️
I was fortunate enough to spend time in Central Texas at Fort Hood after my time in Vietnam. I had a buddy who invited me down to Houston to meet his family and enjoy the music scene. It was 1971. Wow! ZZTop! Wow!! That was a show in a very small venue. Great music. Great people. Texas! Houston! So real and so much fun! Great time for great music!! Thanks for the ride back in time!
Jimmy Hendrix said during an interview on the "Dick Cavett Show" answering to the question of how it felt like to be the greatest guitar player in the world, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Billy Gibbons!" He and Billy were good friends after the pre-ZZ Top band of the same members opened for him at a gig. The Band, "The Warlocks'", did not have enough material to fill their time. So, they filled their close with two of Hendrix's songs. He told them they had "Ball's" and the rest is history.

I've always been a huge fan of their pre-80's albums: ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Tejas, Deguello. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert in Tampa, FL 3 or 4 years ago. RIP Dusty Hill
A fresh channel you have here guys, I love how you break things down. You hit the nail on the head when you commented on ZZ Top's comedic lyrics. It seems they do like to have a li'l fun with their music. I read some years ago Gillette offered Billy and Dusty a million $ to shave their beards off. They turned it down and said something like, 'you folks wouldn't like what's underneath'. Albums, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Deguello and Tejas is where the band are at their best.
ZZ Top are Texas Icons no questions asked! Rest Easy Dusty Hill! Over 50 years and was always in tune with the streets of HTown! Undoubtedly some of the greatest to ever do it! 💪🏾💯

Speaking of 3 man bands, I'm hoping you guys get to the classic Jimi Hendrix Experience LPs like Are You Experienced and Axis Bold As Love. Electric Ladyland, Cry of Love, Band of Gypsys and the various live albums and comps are amazing too but start at the beginning as they sound like no other band from that time. After 55 years they're still exciting and sound incredibly fresh.

I was at the 1974 Labor Day Weekend concert at the University of Texas’, Memorial Stadium. Billed as “The Rompin' Stompin' Texas Size Barn Dance and Barbecue” was hosted by Texas trio ZZ Top, with a lineup that included Santana, Bad Company, Joe Cocker and Jimmy Page - and 80,000 sweaty fans. Was the last concert held in that stadium, it got trashed. What a show, the beards were still short, rhinestones on their attire, longhorn, rattlesnakes… Texas baby and we’re loud and proud.

The thing I like about their songs is that they leave a lot of room to just jam. This song is about 3 minutes, but when I saw them live they played this song for 8 minutes.
One of my favorite stories about this song was a guy strolling down the street. All he heard was the first minute or so coming through an upstairs window. He actually found the song by Googling "a how how how how."

In the 50s and 60s they could drop in and hear all these unfashionable blues players. Then the 13th Floor Elevators from Austin invented Psychedelic Rock and they started a band called The Moving Sidewalks then they totally embraced Texas Blues as ZZ TOP.
Greatest Three Man Bands…. Jimi Hendrix Experience,,,, Cream… Rush… ZZ TOP…Crosby Stills Nash…Stevie Ray Vaughn - Double Trouble…Triumph…Emerson Lake and Palmer… Grand Funk Railroad… The Police… America.
This song highlights the guitar genius that is Billy Gibbons or the Reverend Willie G as he’s sometimes called. Dude can just flat out play some of the tastiest riffs and licks ever. Those pick harmonics in the 2nd solo section are just out of this world .
Yeah, as a kid growing up teaching myself to play guitar those pick harmonics were a revelation, I didn't need anyone to show me how, I just practised till I got it down. Another good song for those harmonics was Steely Dan's My Old School where Jeff Skunk Baxter plays a couple of great solos featuring the same technique.
ZZ had trouble getting gigs out of Texas in the beginning..They finally got a gig in a blues revue at the Overtones Park Shell in Memphis..They weren't scheduled to hit the stage till 1100 at night ....They walked out to a standing room only crowd....They were finally out. Memphis Ardent Studios did I think their first 3_albums..Billy Gibbons liked Memphis a lot.You could catch him sometimes at Molly Gonzales LA casita having a meal or drinks .He was easy to talk to
I read once someone asked Paul McCartney what it was like play with the worlds greatest rock & roll band, he replied I don’t recall ever playing with ZZ Top.
Someone once asked Clapton how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world and he said, I don't know, go ask Prince.
