When I was 17 years old I won tickets from a local radio station to see ZZ Top and a backstage pass. The three of them were fantastic to spend time with and I even got a steak dinner with them. One of the highlights of my teenage years.
I'll never forget them singing 'our boy's way down in waterbury, ct., we can not let him stay out all night. And my papa told my mama, you got to let that boy boogie woogie.'
the one that immediately comes to mind is: "Just Got Paid". Just looove that track. Oh, man. ZZ-Top. Where to begin? (so many fond memories and emotions are flooding my brain right now) Here in Europe, one of the most underrated greats of classic heavy (blues) rock. They've got so many great songs. Rough and rowdy in the seventies, and when the eighties took a turn for the worse, musically-wise, they adapted and gave us "Eliminator", turning their rough sound into beautiful smooth and commercial songs (Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin'), but with the same master-craftsmanship they've always had. When the eighties passed, they went back to their roots. You GOTTA check out the live album "Chrome, Smoke 'n' BBQ". For me, one of the best live rock albums ever. With ZZ-Top, it's not about their technical wizardry - which they have in abundance - but about that no-fucks-given, laid-back tell-it-like-it-is attitude. I dare to say, they represent the soul of rock better than most other rock bands. When one of their songs comes up on my playlist, I immediately think of what I imagine is a Texan BBQ in the midst of summer: lots of sun, lots of beer and lots of red meat! :D Plus, they've been at it for almost half a century. Can you imagine that?? Dude, they are the balls, the stomach AND the heart of rock'n'roll!
I third the "Just Got Paid" suggestion. I was gonna comment to suggest it myself when I was pleasantly surprised to see that you had already. I think it gets overshadowed by some of their other songs (their top-40 hits, but also things like "La Grange" which gets more classic rock station rotation). But to me it's got the nastiest groove of just about any of their songs.

Pearl Necklace and Arrested for Driving While Blind are two of the best ZZ Top songs. I don't believe they got a lot of air play, and that's unfortunate.

Thanks for listening to this. ZZ Top is a trio, Billy Gibbons on guitar and vocals, Dusty Hill on bass and vocals on some songs, and Frank Beard on drums. And LaGrange is about a brothel in LaGrange Texas, the basis for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. I recommend Tush as another song in this vein. Their more commercial songs, were really big on MTV, Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, and many others.
It's great to see young guys react well to 50 year old Texas blues. I've always loved this about "La Grange": the lyrics last for about 58 seconds and then the rest of the song is a vehicle for Billy Gibbons' blazing guitar skills.
The opening vocals were actually a trick played on the band by Robin Hood Studios, they recorded the singer singing into the mic while he was tuning his amp and guitar and was talking low. Normally the opening was much higher. When they played the song back in the studio the producer said hey listen to the opening using this vocal. They were like that doesn’t sound right but they trusted the producer. Robin Hood Studios made this song the number hit it became. Hats off
20+ years ago my buddy & I had to drive from Galveston back to UT at Austin. We would stop for gas in La Grange at dark thirty morning. One time we saw three guys sitting around a table inside the gas station staring at a glass of motor oil. They said they were so bored they were betting, and daring each other to be the 1st to drink it! We explained "Boy. Boys, don't do that. LOL" On the return journey one of them was doing curls with car batteries, complete with acid burns on his arms. I guess working at an all night gas station wasn't too exciting. Yes sir! I have plenty of great friends who are from Oklahoma and we engage in quite a bit of banter and trash talking during football season. I saw ZZ TOP in El Paso in November of 72 with Uriah Heep and Savoy Brown. ZZT opened and weren’t even listed on the bill but our campus radio station dj had gotten wind that they were set to open and I’d been wearing out Rio Grande Mud, so at that point in my life, it was a dream concert come true! Gibbons was wearing a pearl snap button down, jeans and boots, and a cowboy hat, clean shaven and looking like a 3 piece country band! By the time they finished their much too short set, we didn’t give a shit if the two British acts played or not!🤣 Of course that changed when they each came came on!! Even in the altered state I was experiencing, I remember it like it was yesterday. I have a tee shirt that says I May Be Old But I Got To See All The Cool Bands! Just one of many musical memories from my short stay at NMSU in Las Cruses, NM.

I loved Brownsville Station and they use that phrase in one of their songs (phrase, boogie chillin'). 🌷 as a matter of fact the first concert I ever saw was in Tampa and it was ZZ Top and Brownsville Station opened up for them. 👍😎👍

"Old guy from Texas." LOL, Billy (at the time) was your age or younger. This was from the band's early years (1970's). They had a strong following but nowhere near what was to come. That "Little Ol' Band from Texas" didn't hit their commercial stride until the '80's (with the advent of videos) with hit after hit but many ZZ Top purists consider their earlier work to be the best (albeit, less commercial) They're still rockin' hard after 51 years and over 50 million albums sold.
ZZ Top is heavily motivated by a love of the blues and revel in blues licks influenced by some of the traditional masters. Here, Billy Gibbons is deliberately imitating the vocal style of John Lee Hooker. I would add that some of the older ZZ Top songs are some of the naughtiest rock and roll ever - songs like Pearl Necklace and Tube Snake Boogie.
Dudes zz was the 2nd concert I ever went to in the late 70's. I was blown away. I was amazed at how tight they performed live. Btw the tapping is called rim shots, playing on the rim of the drums. Alright, potential play list some of my personal favs. are Velcro Fly, Slip inside my sleeping bag, Legs, and Tubesnake boogie.

A little Texas Boogie-Woogie never hurt anyone! With that said Billy Gibbons has to be one of if not the most underrated guitarist ever. He was Jimmy Hendrix favorite guitarist and once when Billy was done practicing with his original band The Moving Sidewalks Eric Clapton went up to Billy and shook his hand because he was impressed with his guitar playing. So if those two knew he was a phenomenal guitar player, it still boggles my mind why you never hear Billy's name when it comes to who are considered the best.
and when this album came out Tres Hombres, Mick Jagger loved it and hand picked ZZ Top to open a string of gigs in Hawaii for them. The band was stoked because they loved the Stones and never been to Hawaii, They said Mick would stand at the side of the stage in some disguise, fake beard and hat and watched them each show.
The Moving Sidewalk! When I was a teen they played a dance at the K.C. Hall in my podunk town North of New Orleans. They had a song 99th Floor. Years later I learned about Billy Gibbons. Another great reaction to a great song. Thanks, guys!

Grew up listening to ZZ Top, they put on one of the longest and best concerts I've seen. They are one of the biggest bands with many hit songs. They still tour. Anyone who hasen't seen them in concert live you should go you won't regret it. An early one not many people have heard is Burger man, Rough boy is good an kinda shows a little bit different style.
Yeah, I recall seeming them in Seattle opening for Leon Russell in ‘72. I don’t think they had beards and we’re dressed kinda western, they blew the roof off the coliseum.
Great reaction to ZZ Top! Living in Austin, La Grange is about an hour and 15 minutes east of here. This is definitely their most famous song, but their biggest commercial success came with the advent of MTV. ZZ Top's videos were among the most popular on MTV with heavy rotation. I recommend reacting to "Tush".

Great song, and probably their best! While you're on a southern rock/boogie rock kick, you have to do Molly Hatchet 'Flirtin With Disaster', or The Outlaws 'Green Grass & High Tides' (studio versions). Those 2 songs are Southern Rock classics and total 'guitarfest' bangers! Cheers!
This is classic ZZ Top, Im am personally a fan of the earlier stuff like El Loco, Tes Hombres, Fandango, Deguello. Then Eliminator came out and they went full MTV, and made a ton of money in the process. But I much prefer the earlier stuff. So Party on the Patio, Hear It On the X, Jesus Done Left Chicago, Tush... Aside from ZZ, for a mind-blowing quintessential classic rock experience that Ive been recommending since forever, check out Do You Feel Like We Do, Peter Frampton, Frampton Comes Alive. You will not be disappointed. For a "grab you buy the skull and pound your brain high intensity Tool experience check out Hooker With A Penis. See also Ticks & Leeches. For one of the greatest bands of the grunge era check out Alice In Chains - Would, Them Bones, Love Hate Love, Rain When I Die, I Stay Away. Other great bands you should put on your list: The Black Crows - Remedy, Sting Me, either good place to start. The whole Southern Harmony album is pretty fantastic. Back in 2007 I lived in Austin and had to go to Houston for projects meetings and site visits often. One morning on the drive this song came on Sirius as I passed the turn to La Grange. Some friends found the remnants of The Chicken Ranch which is what the song was about. Met them a couple of times, great guys.
On second thought, the video of them playing “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” live from Germany, 1980 is an almost perfect demonstration of them at their lil old band from Texas peak. It was just a couple of years before Eliminator and you can truly appreciate their musicianship, not just the girls and cars.... BFG can play that goddamn guitar!

Two great facts about ZZ Top, 1) You've got two guys with really longs beards. The drummer, who doesn't have a beard, is named Frank Beard. 2) Jimi Hendrix once said that Billy Gibbons was the best guitar player he ever saw.
Those songs are great, but you'll notice they got a little more formulaic/radio-friendly in the early eighties. Their seventies material is definitely more on the "WTF? that is so unique, funky, groovy..." side. Try "Just Got Paid" or "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" There is great live footage of them in 1980 at Rockpalast in Germany.

Oh, man. ZZ-Top. Where to begin? (so many fond memories and emotions are flooding my brain right now)
Here in Europe, one of the most underrated greats of classic heavy (blues) rock. They've got so many great songs.
Rough and rowdy in the seventies, and when the eighties took a turn for the worse, musically-wise, they adapted and gave us "Eliminator", turning their rough sound into beautiful smooth and commercial songs (Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin'), but with the same master-craftsmanship they've always had.
When the eighties passed, they went back to their roots. You GOTTA check out the live album "Chrome, Smoke 'n' BBQ". For me, one of the best live rock albums ever.
With ZZ-Top, it's not about their technical wizardry - which they have in abundance - but about that no-fucks-given, laid-back tell-it-like-it-is attitude. I dare to say, they represent the soul of rock better than most other rock bands.
When one of their songs comes up on my playlist, I immediately think of what I imagine is a Texan BBQ in the midst of summer: lots of sun, lots of beer and lots of red meat! :D
Plus, they've been at it for almost half a century. Can you imagine that?? Dude, they are the balls, the stomach AND the heart of rock'n'roll!
Actually, I believe the three of them finally all got together in 1969, so you could say they've been at it for over half a century now.

I third the "Just Got Paid" suggestion. I was gonna comment to suggest it myself when I was pleasantly surprised to see that you had already. I think it gets overshadowed by some of their other songs (their top-40 hits, but also things like "La Grange" which gets more classic rock station rotation). But to me it's got the nastiest groove of just about any of their songs.
Have you seen the ZZ Top documentary on Netflix? It’s pretty good. I grew up in Houston, so these are hometown boys.

Thanks for listening to this. ZZ Top is a trio, Billy Gibbons on guitar and vocals, Dusty Hill on bass and vocals on some songs, and Frank Beard on drums. And LaGrange is about a brothel in LaGrange Texas, the basis for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. I recommend Tush as another song in this vein. Their more commercial songs, were really big on MTV, Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, and many others.

It's great to see young guys react well to 50 year old Texas blues. I've always loved this about "La Grange": the lyrics last for about 58 seconds and then the rest of the song is a vehicle for Billy Gibbons' blazing guitar skills.

The opening vocals were actually a trick played on the band by Robin Hood Studios, they recorded the singer singing into the mic while he was tuning his amp and guitar and was talking low. Normally the opening was much higher. When they played the song back in the studio the producer said hey listen to the opening using this vocal. They were like that doesn’t sound right but they trusted the producer. Robin Hood Studios made this song the number hit it became. Hats off

20+ years ago my buddy & I had to drive from Galveston back to UT at Austin. We would stop for gas in La Grange at dark thirty morning. One time we saw three guys sitting around a table inside the gas station staring at a glass of motor oil. They said they were so bored they were betting, and daring each other to be the 1st to drink it! We explained "Boy. Boys, don't do that. LOL" On the return journey one of them was doing curls with car batteries, complete with acid burns on his arms. I guess working at an all night gas station wasn't too exciting. I saw ZZ TOP in El Paso in November of 72 with Uriah Heep and Savoy Brown. ZZT opened and weren’t even listed on the bill but our campus radio station dj had gotten wind that they were set to open and I’d been wearing out Rio Grande Mud, so at that point in my life, it was a dream concert come true!
Gibbons was wearing a pearl snap button down, jeans and boots, and a cowboy hat, clean shaven and looking like a 3 piece country band!
By the time they finished their much too short set, we didn’t give a shit if the two British acts played or not!🤣
Of course that changed when they each came came on!!
Even in the altered state I was experiencing, I remember it like it was yesterday.

"Old guy from Texas." LOL, Billy (at the time) was your age or younger. This was from the band's early years (1970's). They had a strong following but nowhere near what was to come. That "Little Ol' Band from Texas" didn't hit their commercial stride until the '80's (with the advent of videos) with hit after hit but many ZZ Top purists consider their earlier work to be the best (albeit, less commercial) They're still rockin' hard after 51 years and over 50 million albums sold.

Try ZZ Top's "Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago." It is better if you listen to both at once.
ZZ Top is heavily motivated by a love of the blues and revel in blues licks influenced by some of the traditional masters. Here, Billy Gibbons is deliberately imitating the vocal style of John Lee Hooker. I would add that some of the older ZZ Top songs are some of the naughtiest rock and roll ever - songs like Pearl Necklace and Tube Snake Boogie.
I always thought the opening riff on La Grange was very similar to Shake Your Hips by Slim Harpo or the Stones

Dudes zz was the 2nd concert I ever went to in the late 70's. I was blown away. I was amazed at how tight they performed live. Btw the tapping is called rim shots, playing on the rim of the drums. A little Texas Boogie-Woogie never hurt anyone! With that said Billy Gibbons has to be one of if not the most underrated guitarist ever. He was Jimmy Hendrix favorite guitarist and once when Billy was done practicing with his original band The Moving Sidewalks Eric Clapton went up to Billy and shook his hand because he was impressed with his guitar playing. So if those two knew he was a phenomenal guitar player, it still boggles my mind why you never hear Billy's name when it comes to who are considered the best.

and when this album came out Tres Hombres, Mick Jagger loved it and hand picked ZZ Top to open a string of gigs in Hawaii for them. The band was stoked because they loved the Stones and never been to Hawaii, They said Mick would stand at the side of the stage in some disguise, fake beard and hat and watched them each show.
The Moving Sidewalk! When I was a teen they played a dance at the K.C. Hall in my podunk town North of New Orleans. They had a song 99th Floor. Years later I learned about Billy Gibbons. Another great reaction to a great song. Thanks, guys!

Grew up listening to ZZ Top, they put on one of the longest and best concerts I've seen. They are one of the biggest bands with many hit songs. They still tour. Anyone who hasen't seen them in concert live you should go you won't regret it. An early one not many people have heard is Burger man, Rough boy is good an kinda shows a little bit different style.

Great reaction to ZZ Top! Living in Austin, La Grange is about an hour and 15 minutes east of here. This is definitely their most famous song, but their biggest commercial success came with the advent of MTV. ZZ Top's videos were among the most popular on MTV with heavy rotation. I recommend reacting to "Tush".

Great song, and probably their best! While you're on a southern rock/boogie rock kick, you have to do Molly Hatchet 'Flirtin With Disaster', or The Outlaws 'Green Grass & High Tides' (studio versions). Those 2 songs are Southern Rock classics and total 'guitarfest' bangers! Cheers!

Then Eliminator came out and they went full MTV, and made a ton of money in the process. But I much prefer the earlier stuff. So Party on the Patio, Hear It On the X, Jesus Done Left Chicago, Tush...

Back in 2007 I lived in Austin and had to go to Houston for projects meetings and site visits often. One morning on the drive this song came on Sirius as I passed the turn to La Grange. Some friends found the remnants of The Chicken Ranch which is what the song was about. Met them a couple of times, great guys.
Early ZZ TOP is some of the best Texas/Country Blues you'll ever hear. Fifty years and going strong. Love'em.

It was just a couple of years before Eliminator and you can truly appreciate their musicianship, not just the girls and cars.... BFG can play that goddamn guitar!

Bluesman John Lee Hooker made the guttural "how how how" vocals famous. ZZ Top pays tribute to him on this tune. The guitar solos win it for me though. That tone is bliss.

Imagine 3 teens (who just had a "mushroom" pizza) in the front row of a 1970s ZZ Top concert. The show starts and on each side of the stage rises cages with buzzards, snakes and live buffalo..and they start this song, we lost our minds! We asked each other in the car on the way home.. did you see those buffalo or was it the "pizza" :-)

A lot of people are going to recommend their big hits from the 80's, but I'd stick to their early stuff like this one. More blues and less pop.

Those songs are great, but you'll notice they got a little more formulaic/radio-friendly in the early eighties. Their seventies material is definitely more on the "WTF? that is so unique, funky, groovy..." side. Try "Just Got Paid" or "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" There is great live footage of them in 1980 at Rockpalast in Germany.
