@TheJJ6 I'm 40 and I've been playing trumpet for 28 years. You cannot "play" without a mouthpiece. You can, however, make noise.

As an Alto I can confirm you can do this with a mouthpiece as well, but, it only works in the high register, such as altissimo.

Recently went to a convention, and yes, there was a screaming trumpet player every 3 minutes.
As a trombone player and a band kid i can confirm the trumpets do play without mouthpieces and spam the valves but us trombones we will play with no mouthpiece and go sonic on that slide
