Hi Neil. Its a pretty good scope for the money, I love the Agilent but other than speed etc it has been limited/disabled and you have to keep spending to buy licences to open up more capabilities that are actually built in but locked. I keep looking around to see if any hackers have managed to unlock it. at least with the owon everything is running straight out of the box.
Thanks for the brief review. I brought an Owon 7102V and like the large screen. In a way I also like the overall simplicity. I then brought a Rigol DS1074Z with 4 channels and loads of functionality. Seeing as it is not much more money than the Owon I guess it is better value but there are so many options/functions the learning curve is a bit steep. I will keep the Owon as a backup. You cannot have too much test gear.
Hi Mark, tx for the review. I really appreciated it. Other reviewers state that, contrary to what the user manual says, the trigger out is not optically isolated from the inputs and it's not a synchronous trigger out. What's your opinion about that; I mean.. is it a reason not to by the Owon?
Hi Thomas, I think that is quite true that the trigger out is NOT optically isolated, I saw that in one of Dave's video's eevblog where he figured that out on a 300Mhz version. still I think its a good scope for the low price.
+markusfuller hold on I think that may have been me moving it around and it was slightly disconnecting from the signal source with its probe as I turned it. no theres no problem there. Thanks anyway.
The two probes (those come with 7102) are of 10:1 /1:1 type or just 1:1 type ? And their model/cat. number ? I understand this DSO price is low & affordable to many like me but after watching YT videos, I think the inside story is really inferior & toy like finish with chip plastic granules & low grade components - specially the rotary encoders. On the other hand Rigol has far better inside stories. Initially I thought that I would go for Rigol DS 1054Z but recently heard that it has many software bugs. I do not have reqd money for Rohde & Schwarz or Keysight or Tektronix. I am confused - do not know what I will do now. Any friendly advice will be very helpful for me.
Hello yes the probes were 1:1/10:1 type. I got rid of this a while back now as it was ok as a starter scope but was a little slow sometimes. I think there are some much nicer second hand scopes on ebay like Agilent (which is keysight now) Rohde & Schwarz etc. you may find a better spec scope on ebay at a better price than a lower spec new scope. but I could only recommend this 7102v scope as a starter low price scope, after all it did its job in the short time I owned it. but you will want to move up to a better one eventually.
+Markusfuller : Here in India, I am getting Owon make DSO 7102V at very reasonable prices. Tell me how I will know its a 7102V & not a 6062 ? Please help.
Hello Gautam, The scope should have the model number on it but just incase the "V" in the 7102v stands for Video output. so there is a video output socket on the back of the 7102v.
Hi Mark, Im looking to purchase my first oscilloscope very soon. I have little exterience with them but plenty electrical experience. It will be mainly a hobby scope so I want to keep it at about $500 or less. This Owon 7102v is priced at $490. Can you help me please? Just by looking at videos and studying the specs I am favoring the Owon units. Can you tell me any other brands and models that you favor in this price range or less. Which one do you favor the most? If there are any that you recommend to stay away from please inform me of that too. Also please tell me what effect is caused by " the trigger out is NOT optically isolated". How does this aulter the use of the scope. I truly will appreciate any help that you give me. I have been studying these scopes for over a month trying to decide. 1 more thing; what is the max voltage rating on this Owon 7102V. Thanks.
Hi gojounnygo6869. I do think the Owon scopes are quite good for the price though not the best scopes on the market but then you get what you pay for and these are very reasonable for the price. However I would be inclined to have a look for a good used scope because theres more change you will get a higher spec used scope and save some Dollars for other items you may need in your setup. Before I bought the Agilent scope to replace the Owon I always had Tektronix and Agilent ebay finds and some of them were brilliant scopes around £200 ($290) but I wanted a new scope for the USB image capturing. other than that I would still be using my old tektronix. Have a look around the usual ebay etc first and check to see what is available, you could save some money. Good Luck
markusfuller Thanks, I have already spent a little time on ebay looking at the scopes but all I could find was scopes that reminded me of my school days. I am hoping for something just a few years old at most. I will go back and look again but will probably buy new with a warrenty. I heard that Owon has made some improvments on this series since they 1st came out. I spoke with a tech at a major oscilloscope retailer and repair store who seem to favor this unit over any other in this price range. After watching your video it seem that you like it as well. Im imagine you are use to the high dollar scopes so do not feel comfortable using something like this, but my only profit from my scope will be entertainment. Thanks again, not just for your reply but I feel that your video was very helpful for me too.
Hi Yes I see Owon has made some newer scopes and some major improvements. I like the Owon very much and the price is amazing for what you get. I only bought the Agilent because I needed 4 channels and a few extra features but pound for pound the Owon is A Bargain.
Thank you. It seems you have a very nice setup, perhaps you could do a walkthrough video oneday, explaining what makes your workshop tick :) - but maybe thats not of so many interest to know that.
it would be better if you compared small signal characteristics like sub-millivolt signals or high impedance voltage source measurements and so on... but thanks :)
very nicely presented and a fair comparison based on cost rather than performance in my view
Nice video, its amazing how cheaply the Chinese can bring out a decent scope for the masses of skint hobby users like me.

Noticed glitches on Agilent's scope @5:30? Deeper memory than on Owon?:)

Destruction manual... did that cost extra? Thanks for the video, looks like the Owon is a good starter oscilloscope!
+MrBarlien the Owon is a great starter oscilloscope and they have just made a new one with logic analyser in it.
Nice review. What is the signal generator you are using in this demo?
Hello it is the ATTEN ATF20B
Thank you. It seems you have a very nice setup, perhaps you could do a walkthrough video oneday, explaining what makes your workshop tick :) - but maybe thats not of so many interest to know that.
yeah, but the Enterprise screensaver.... worth 1200 quids more, of course! ;-))
it would be better if you compared small signal characteristics like sub-millivolt signals or high impedance voltage source measurements and so on...
but thanks :)
Thanks for review
+Markusfuller : Thanks. I will try to find one in ebay.
good review, very useful information. thanks for the effort.
any similar low cost arbitrary signal generator to recommend for beginners?
Fisher Price?
Awesome
This guy needs 2 wristwatches?
Destruction manual hahaha
I heard that too. LOL
