- I'm a big fan of non-traditional pickups, with some of my favorite sounds coming from Wide Range Humbuckers, Filtertons, and Minis. Well, Lollar just released their Firebird style pickups in humbucker form and I'm loving the sparkle and tight bottom end of these pickups. What turns me off about most humbucker sets is that the neck position tends to be too muddy or overly "warm" for my tastes. These Birds offer such nice clarity even in the neck position and help retain that sparkle, snap and chime I love so much.
I had my tech drop this set in my Squier Paranormal Toronado. With its 24.75" scale it plays like an offset rocker, and the Bird set matches the vibe well, bringing the guitar to life.
Here I'm exploring the clean sounds across each pickup position. Check the notes below for all the details and specs of this setup.
Thanks to Lollar for sending these pickups over to demo!

Your melodic concept is beautiful. Your playing is perfect for those wanting to actually hear what the gear sounds like.
And this is a perfect demo of these particular pickups. They are far more focussed and coherent than any regular bucker.
thanks for the kind words! Totally, they're really special pickups. Focused and coherent are great adjectives. Enjoying the 'Birds!
Love your sound Andrew, and the tasty notes.
aw thanks, appreciate it!
Great video! I love Lollar!!
Lollar makes everything better.
Agreed !
Just beautiful, friend.
Thank you!
Great clean sound
agreed!
They have such a distinct, beautiful tone, truly excellent demo. Thank you very much they almost sound like a lower output P 90 of some kind as I have played Firebirds several vintage ones. Certainly the tone is there, but there’s something a little more special about these pick ups interestingly enough thank you again I’ll be doing more research on these great demo. 4:14
thanks for watching! Yeah I could see the P90 comparison, they have a cool compression to them, and are sparkly but not harsh. I've really been pleasantly surprised with them :)
This is AWESOME.
hey thanks!
Oh man I need these
loving them so far. I love a good pickup that retains the top end clarity, has a touch of chewiness when you dig in, and doesn't give up the bottom end tightness. checks a lot of boxes here!
Beautiful playing brotha 🙌🏻
Bruh, I've been sitting on a ton of Lollar pickups and I've been thinking of getting a Toronado. I think you may have just sold me.
Dude, yes! What sets are you getting into!? I loved the Toronado because it adds another short scale to my lineup and kinda scratches that Gibson vibe a bit with Fender comforts. It's a fun little guitar, and the Firebirds pair well with it.
@@AmbientEndeavors Nice!!!! I've been eyeing one for awhile and I've just been debating on pulling the trigger. But, I've got a set of Imperials and a set of Novel CC's. So, I'm not entirely sure whats going in there.
Im stoked on your toro. Best half Gibson half fender available.
It’s really fun. Loving it so far!
I'm wondering how these compare to the McNelly Stagger Swaggers? I've been going back and forth between those and Firebird-style pickups.
I have a G&L Fallout Tribute I'm dying to throw one of these humbucker sized Firebird pickups into the bridge position, probably get their proper Firebird sized pickup plus a mounting ring to replace the P90 in the neck too.
Oo that’d be cool!
Did you have to change the pots or you are using stock pls? Great playing and beautiful tone!
everything stayed stock on this one!
These sound so good. Curious how you're feeling about these now, a few months after the pickup swap?
For me, I feel like it takes at least a few months before my opinion on new pickups or a new guitar is fully settled.
Still really loving them, more as I play them more. I've used this guitar in a few videos since, check my uploads, specifically the Origin DCX BOOST vid here where I really thought the pickups shined. ruclips.net/video/aWKxQDKE_oA/видео.html
I love the way they sparkle and zing, but also have that slightly chewy compression. And for me they provide a unique tone and feel from a lot of the other guitars I play. Would still highly recommend them.
@@AmbientEndeavors super helpful, thank you! I decided to pull the trigger on a Fano PX6 loaded with the classic Firebird-size version of these pickups after watching your review, among others. Should arrive next week!
Did the stock pickups have extra wires so they could be coil split or tapped? Nice job, like your Twins hat
I believe the stock Toronado humbuckers were 4 wire. You can order The Bird with either 2 or 4 wire I believe.
How do they sound with overdrive?
That video is forthcoming. ;) you can hear some dirtier sounds on my Sonicake Matribox video with this guitar
